Scherk-Schwarz Breaking and Intersecting Branes

We study the effect of Scherk-Schwarz deformations on intersecting branes. Non-chiral fermions in any representation of the Chan-Paton gauge group generically acquire a tree-level mass dependent on the compactification radius and the brane wrapping numbers. This offers an elegant solution to one of the long-standing problems in intersecting-brane-world models where the ubiquitous presence of massless non-chiral fermions is a clear embarrassment for any attempt to describe the Standard Model of Particle Physics.

Bulk and brane radiative effects in gauge theories on orbifolds

We have computed one-loop bulk and brane mass renormalization effects in a five-dimensional gauge theory compactified on the M_4 \times S^1/Z_2 orbifold, where an arbitrary gauge group G is broken by the orbifold action to its subgroup H. The space-time components of the gauge boson zero modes along the H generators span the gauge theory on the orbifold fixed point branes while the zero modes of the higher-dimensional components of the gauge bosons along the G/H generators play the role of Higgs fields with respect to the gauge group H. No quadratic divergences in the mass renormalization of the gauge and Higgs fields are found either in the bulk or on the branes. All brane effects for the Higgs field masses vanish (only wave function renormalization effects survive) while bulk effects are finite and can trigger, depending on the fermionic content of the theory, spontaneous Hosotani breaking of the brane gauge group H. For the gauge fields we do find logarithmic divergences corresponding to mass renormalization of their heavy Kaluza-Klein modes. Two-loop brane effects for Higgs field masses are expected from wave function renormalization brane effects inserted into finite bulk mass corrections.

Radiative brane-mass terms in D>5 orbifold gauge theories

A gauge theory with gauge group G defined in D>4 space-time dimensions can be broken to a subgroup H on four dimensional fixed point branes, when compactified on an orbifold. Mass terms for extra dimensional components of gauge fields A_i (brane scalars) might acquire (when allowed by the brane symmetries) quadratically divergent radiative masses and thus jeopardize the stability of the four-dimensional theory. We have analyzed Z_2 compactifications and identified the brane symmetries remnants of the higher dimensional gauge invariance. No mass term is allowed for D=5 while for D>5 a tadpole ε^{ij}F_{ij}^αcan appear when there are U_α(1) factors in H. A detailed calculation is done for the D=6 case and it is established that the tadpole is related, although does not coincide, with the U_α(1) anomaly induced on the brane by the bulk fermions. In particular, no tadpole is generated from gauge bosons or fermions in real representations

TeV-Scale Z' Bosons from D-branes

Generic D-brane string models of particle physics predict the existence of extra U(1) gauge symmetries beyond hypercharge. These symmetries are not of the E_6 class but rather include the gauging of Baryon and Lepton numbers as well as certain Peccei-Quinn-like symmetries. Some of the U(1)'s have triangle anomalies, but they are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. The corresponding gauge bosons typically acquire a mass of order the string scale M_S by combining with two-index antisymmetric fields coming from the closed string sector of the theory. We argue that in string models with a low string scale M_S proportional to 1-10 TeV, the presence of these generic U(1)'s may be amenable to experimental test. Present constraints from electroweak precision data already set important bounds on the mass of these extra gauge bosons. In particular, for large classes of models, rho-parameter constraints imply M_S >= 1.5 TeV. In the present scheme some fraction of the experimentally measured Z^0 mass would be due not to the Higgs mechanism, but rather to the mixing with these closed string fields. We give explicit formulae for recently constructed classes of intersecting D6- and D5-brane models yielding the Standard Model (SM) fermion spectrum.

Gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking and supergravity

We analyze simple models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in the context of supergravity. We distinguish two cases. One is when the messenger of the supersymmetry breaking is a non Abelian gauge force and the other is when the messenger is a pseudoanomalous U(1). We assume that these models originate from string theory and we impose the constraint of the vanishing of the cosmological constant requiring also the stabilization of the dilaton. In the first case, we do not find vacua that are consistent with the constraints of gauge mediation and have a zero tree level cosmological constant. In the second case, no such conflict arises. In addition, by looking at the one loop cosmological constant, we show that the dilaton F-term can not be neglected in either case. For the gauge mediated case our considerations suggest that the dilaton must be frozen out of the low energy field theory by non-perturbative string dynamics.

Anomalous U(1) and low-energy physics: the power of D-flatness and holomorphy

In models with an anomalous abelian symmetry broken at a very large scale, we study which requirements to impose on the anomalous charges in order to prevent standard model fields from acquiring large vacuum expectation values. The use of holomorphic invariants to study D-flat directions for the anomalous symmetry, proves to be a very powerful tool. We find that in order to forbid unphysical vacuum configurations at that scale, the superpotential must contain many interaction terms, including the usual Yukawa terms. Our analysis suggests that the anomalous charge of the μ-term is zero. It is remarkable that, together with the seesaw mechanism, and mass hierarchies, this implies a natural conservation of R-parity.
