Indirect Effect of Supersymmetric Triplets in Stop Decays

We study an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with a zero hypercharge triplet, and the effect that such a particle has on stop decays. This model has the capability of predicting a 125.5 GeV Higgs even in the presence of light stops and it can modify the diphoton rate by means of the extra charged fermion triplet coupled to the Higgs. Working in the limit where the scalar triplet decouples, and with small values of mA, we find that the fermion triplet can greatly affect the branching ratios of the stops, even in the absence of a direct stop-triplet coupling. We compare the triplet extension with the MSSM and discuss how the additional fields affect the search for stop pair production.

Higgs Searches and Extra Dimensions

We present a short review of theories based on warped extra dimensions (motivated by the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model) which can accomodate a Higgs boson in the range suggested by the recent LHC results at 7 TeV. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence the Higgs is composite and can be described in the dual theory by a bound state of the 4D CFT. We have classified the theories in those with a scalar Higgs (5D SM) and those where the Higgs is the fifth component (gauge-Higgs unification) of a bulk gauge field.

Some Cosmological Implications of Hidden Sectors

We discuss some cosmological implications of extensions of the Standard Model with hidden sector scalars coupled to the Higgs boson. We put special emphasis on the conformal case, in which the electroweak symmetry is broken radiatively with a Higgs mass above the experimental limit. Our refined analysis of the electroweak phase transition in this kind of models strengthens the prediction of a strongly first-order phase transition as required by electroweak baryogenesis. We further study gravitational wave production and the possibility of low-scale inflation as well as a viable dark matter candidate.

Electroweak Baryogenesis, Large Yukawas and Dark Matter

It has been recently shown that the electroweak baryogenesis mechanism is feasible in Standard Model extensions containing extra fermions with large Yukawa couplings. We show here that the lightest of these fermionic fields can naturally be a good candidate for cold dark matter. We find regions in the parameter space where the thermal relic abundance of this particle is compatible with the dark matter density of the Universe as determined by the WMAP experiment. We study direct and indirect dark matter detection for this model and compare with current experimental limits and prospects for upcoming experiments. We find, contrary to the standard lore, that indirect detection searches are more promising than direct detection ones, and they already exclude a portion of the parameter space.

Supersymmetry from Boundary Conditions

We study breaking and restoration of supersymmetry in five-dimensional theories by determining the mass spectrum of fermions from their equations of motion. Boundary conditions can be obtained from either the action principle by extremizing an appropriate boundary action (interval approach) or by assigning parities to the fields (orbifold approach). In the former, fields extend continuously from the bulk to the boundaries, while in the latter the presence of brane mass-terms cause fields to jump when one moves across the branes. We compare the two approaches and in particular we carefully compute the non-trivial jump profiles of the wavefunctions in the orbifold picture for very general brane mass terms. We also include the effect of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism in either approach and point out that for a suitable tuning of the boundary actions supersymmetry is present for arbitrary values of the Scherk-Schwarz parameter. As an application of the interval formalism we construct bulk and boundary actions for super Yang-Mills theory. Finally we extend our results to the warped Randall-Sundrum background.

Tadpoles and Symmetries in Higgs-Gauge Unification Theories

In theories with extra dimensions the Standard Model Higgs fields can be identified with internal components of bulk gauge fields (Higgs-gauge unification). The bulk gauge symmetry protects the Higgs mass from quadratic divergences, but at the fixed points localized tadpoles can be radiatively generated if U(1) subgroups are conserved, making the Higgs mass UV sensitive. We show that a global symmetry, remnant of the internal rotation group after orbifold projection, can prevent the generation of such tadpoles. In particular we consider the classes of orbifold compactifications T^d/Z_N (d even, N>2) and T^d/Z_2 (arbitrary d) and show that in the first case tadpoles are always allowed, while in the second they can appear only for d=2 (six dimensions).

Scherk-Schwarz Supersymmetry Breaking with Radion Stabilization

We study the issue of radion stabilization within five-dimensional supersymmetric theories compactified on the orbifold S^1/Z_2. We break supersymmetry by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism and explain its implementation in the off-shell formulation of five dimensional supergravity in terms of the tensor and linear compensator multiplets. We show that radion stabilization may be achieved by radiative corrections in the presence of five-dimensional fields which are quasi-localized on the boundaries through the presence of Z_2 odd mass terms. For the mechanism to work the number of quasi-localized fields should be greater than 2+N_V-N_h where N_V and N_h are the number of massless gauge- and hypermultiplets in the bulk. The radion is stabilized in a metastable Minkowski vacuum with a lifetime much larger than cosmological time-scales. The radion mass is in the meV range making it interesting for present and future measurements of deviations from the gravitational inverse-square law in the submillimeter range.

Supersymmetry breaking with quasi-localized fields in orbifold field theories

We study the Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking in five-dimensional orbifold theories with five-dimensional fields which are not strictly localized on the boundaries (quasi-localized fields). We show that the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) mechanism, besides the SS parameter ω, depends upon new parameters, e.g. supersymmetric five-dimensional odd mass terms, governing the level of localization on the boundaries of the five-dimensional fields and study in detail such a dependence. Taking into account radiative corrections, the value of ωis dynamically allowed to acquire any value in the range 0< ω< 1/2.

Brane-assisted Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking in orbifolds

We have analyzed the interplay between Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking and general fermion (gaugino or gravitino) mass terms localized on the fixed point branes of the S^1/Z_2 orbifold. Analytic solutions for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are found in all cases. All results are checked by numerical calculations that make use of regularized δ-functions. Odd and generically also even fermions are discontinuous at the brane fixed points, but in all cases the combination that couples to the brane is continuous. For CP-even brane mass terms supersymmetry restoration can take place when their effects are cancelled by those of Scherk-Schwarz compactification. However such a cancellation can not occur for CP-odd brane mass terms.

Bulk and brane radiative effects in gauge theories on orbifolds

We have computed one-loop bulk and brane mass renormalization effects in a five-dimensional gauge theory compactified on the M_4 \times S^1/Z_2 orbifold, where an arbitrary gauge group G is broken by the orbifold action to its subgroup H. The space-time components of the gauge boson zero modes along the H generators span the gauge theory on the orbifold fixed point branes while the zero modes of the higher-dimensional components of the gauge bosons along the G/H generators play the role of Higgs fields with respect to the gauge group H. No quadratic divergences in the mass renormalization of the gauge and Higgs fields are found either in the bulk or on the branes. All brane effects for the Higgs field masses vanish (only wave function renormalization effects survive) while bulk effects are finite and can trigger, depending on the fermionic content of the theory, spontaneous Hosotani breaking of the brane gauge group H. For the gauge fields we do find logarithmic divergences corresponding to mass renormalization of their heavy Kaluza-Klein modes. Two-loop brane effects for Higgs field masses are expected from wave function renormalization brane effects inserted into finite bulk mass corrections.

Radiative brane-mass terms in D>5 orbifold gauge theories

A gauge theory with gauge group G defined in D>4 space-time dimensions can be broken to a subgroup H on four dimensional fixed point branes, when compactified on an orbifold. Mass terms for extra dimensional components of gauge fields A_i (brane scalars) might acquire (when allowed by the brane symmetries) quadratically divergent radiative masses and thus jeopardize the stability of the four-dimensional theory. We have analyzed Z_2 compactifications and identified the brane symmetries remnants of the higher dimensional gauge invariance. No mass term is allowed for D=5 while for D>5 a tadpole ε^{ij}F_{ij}^αcan appear when there are U_α(1) factors in H. A detailed calculation is done for the D=6 case and it is established that the tadpole is related, although does not coincide, with the U_α(1) anomaly induced on the brane by the bulk fermions. In particular, no tadpole is generated from gauge bosons or fermions in real representations

Radiative Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking

We analyze the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) supersymmetry breaking in brane-world five dimensional theories compactified on the orbifold $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. The SS breaking parameter is undetermined at the tree-level (no-scale supergravity) and can be interpreted as the Hosotani vacuum expectation value corresponding to the $U(1)_R$ group in five dimensional N=2 (ungauged) supergravity. We show that the SS breaking parameter is fixed at the loop level to either 0 or 1/2 depending on the matter content propagating in the bulk but in a rather model-independent way. Supersymmetry breaking is therefore fixed through a radiative Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. We also show that the two discrete values of the SS parameter, as well as the supersymmetry breaking shift in the spectrum of the bulk fields, are altered in the presence of a brane-localized supersymmetry breaking arising from some hidden sector dynamics. The interplay between the SS and the brane localized breaking is studied in detail.

Finite Higgs mass without Supersymmetry

We identify a class of chiral models where the one-loop effective potential for Higgs scalar fields is finite without any requirement of supersymmetry. It corresponds to the case where the Higgs fields are identified with the components of a gauge field along compactified extra dimensions. We present a six dimensional model with gauge group U(3)xU(3) and quarks and leptons accomodated in fundamental and bi-fundamental representations. The model can be embedded in a D-brane configuration of type I string theory and, upon compactification on a T^2/Z_2 orbifold, it gives rise to the standard model with two Higgs doublets.

Constraints on the Higgs boson properties from the effective potential

We review the constraints on Higgs boson properties from effective potential methods. In the Standard Model, the requirement of stability (or metastability) of the standard electroweak minimum puts an upper bound on the scale of new physics as a function of the Higgs mass. This upper bound is below the Planck scale if the Higgs weights $\simlt$ 130 GeV. In supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model the former methods are useful to compute the Higgs mass spectrum, and couplings, after resumming higher loop effects. In particular, if the Higgs mass weights $\simgt$ 130 GeV, the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model will be ruled out, while its non-minimal supersymmetric extension containing singlets is only marginally allowed.

Electroweak baryogenesis and low energy supersymmetry

Electroweak baryogenesis is an interesting theoretical scenario, which demands physics beyond the Standard Model at energy scales of the order of the weak boson masses. It has been recently emphasized that, in the presence of light stops, the electroweak phase transition can be strongly first order, opening the window for electroweak baryogenesis in the MSSM. For the realization of this scenario, the Higgs boson must be light, at the reach of the LEP2 collider. In this article, we compute the baryon asymmetry assuming the presence of non-trivial CP violating phases in the parameters associated with the left-right stop mixing term and the Higgsino mass $μ$. We conclude that a phase $|\sin ϕ_μ| > 0.01$ and Higgsino and gaugino mass parameters $|μ| \simeq M_2$, and of the order of the electroweak scale, are necessary in order to generate the observed baryon asymmetry.

Higgs bosons in the Standard Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

In these lectures we present a brief review of the Higgs boson sector in the ``Standard Model'', and its Minimal Supersymmetric Extension, with particular emphasis on the main mechanisms for Higgs production and decay at LEP2 and LHC, and theoretical bounds on the Higgs boson masses. In the ``Standard Model'' the effective potential can develop a non-standard minimum for values of the field much larger than the weak scale. Comparison of the decay rate to the non-standard minimum at finite (and zero) temperature with the corresponding expansion rate of the Universe allows to identify the region, in the ($M_H$, $M_t$)-plane which can be accomodated by the theory. In the ``Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model'', approximate analytical expressions for the Higgs mass spectrum and couplings are worked out. An appropriate treatment of squark decoupling allows to consider large values of the stop mixing parameters and thus fix a reliable upper bound on the mass of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass. The discovery of the Higgs boson at LEP2 might put an upper bound (below the Planck scale) on the scale of new physics $Λ$ and eventually disentangle between the Standard Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Standard Model stability bounds for new physics within LHC reach

We analyse the stability lower bounds on the Standard Model Higgs mass by carefully controlling the scale independence of the effective potential. We include resummed leading and next-to-leading-log corrections, and physical pole masses for the Higgs boson, M_H, and the top-quark, M_t. Particular attention is devoted to the cases where the scale of new physics Λis within LHC reach, i.e. Λ\leq 10 TeV, which have been the object of recent controversial results. We clarify the origin of discrepancies and confirm our earlier results within the error of our previous estimate. In particular for Λ=1 TeV we find that M_H[GeV]>52+0.64(M_t[GeV]-175)-0.50\frac{α_s(M_Z)-0.118}{0.006}. For fixed values of M_t and α_s(M_Z), the error from higher effects, as the lack of exact scale invariance of the effective potential and higher-order radiative corrections, is conservatively estimated to be \simlt 5 GeV.

GAUGINO CONDENSATES AND CHIRAL-LINEAR DUALITY: AN EFFECTIVE LAGRANGIAN ANALYSIS

We show how to formulate the phenomenon of gaugino condensation in a super-Yang-Mills theory with a field-dependent gauge coupling described with a linear multiplet. We prove the duality equivalence of this approach with the more familiar formulation using a chiral superfield. In so doing, we resolve a longstanding puzzle as to how a linear-multiplet formulation can be consistent with the dynamical breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry which is thought to occur once the gauginos condense. In our approach, the composite gauge degrees of freedom are described by a real vector superfield, $V$, rather than the chiral superfield that is obtained in the traditional dual formulation. Our dualization, when applied to the case of several condensing gauge groups, provides strong evidence that this duality survives strong-coupling effects in string theory.

IMPROVED METASTABILITY BOUNDS ON THE STANDARD MODEL HIGGS MASS

Depending on the Higgs-boson and top-quark masses, $M_H$ and $M_t$, the effective potential of the Standard Model at finite (and zero) temperature can have a deep and unphysical stable minimum $\langle ϕ(T)\rangle$ at values of the field much larger than $G_F^{-1/2}$. We have computed absolute lower bounds on $M_H$, as a function of $M_t$, imposing the condition of no decay by thermal fluctuations, or quantum tunnelling, to the stable minimum. Our effective potential at zero temperature includes all next-to-leading logarithmic corrections (making it extremely scale-independent), and we have used pole masses for the Higgs-boson and top-quark. Thermal corrections to the effective potential include plasma effects by one-loop ring resummation of Debye masses. All calculations, including the effective potential and the bubble nucleation rate, are performed numerically, and so the results do not rely on any kind of analytical approximation. Easy-to-use fits are provided for the benefit of the reader. Conclusions on the possible Higgs detection at LEP-200 are drawn.

On the nature of the electroweak phase transition

We discuss the finite-temperature effective potential of the Standard Model, $\veff$, with emphasis on the resummation of the most important infrared contributions. We compute the one-loop scalar and vector boson self-energies in the zero-momentum limit. By solving the corresponding set of gap equations, with the inclusion of subleading contributions, we find a non-vanishing magnetic mass for the $SU(2)$ gauge bosons. We comment on its possible implications for the nature of the electroweak phase transition. We also discuss the range of validity of our approximations and compare this with other approaches.

Scalar--Tensor Theories of Gravity with \PHI Dependent Masses

We study new physical phenomena and constraints in generalized scalar--tensor theories of gravity with $Φ$--dependent masses. We investigate a scenario (which can arise in string theories) with two types of $Φ$--dependent masses which could correspond to visible and dark matter sectors. The parameters of this theory are constrained from post--Newtonian bounds, primordial nucleosynthesis and the age of the Universe. We present a perfect fluid formalism for the dark matter sector with variable masses and find an entropy increase effect during the matter era and, in principle, a measurable effect on the motion of the halo of spiral galaxies. For the case of string effective theories, the constancy of gauge couplings provide new bounds which are orders of magnitude stronger than the previous ones.
