Evidence of structural phase transition in superconducting SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_x from 19^F NMR

We report the resistivity, magnetization and 19^F NMR results in polycrystalline sample of SmFeAsO_(0.86)F_(0.14). The resistivity and the magnetization data show a sharp drop at 48 K indicating the superconducting transition. The nuclear spin-lattice rate (1/T_1) and spin-spin relaxation rate (1/T_2) clearly show the existence of a structural phase transition near 163 K in the sample which also undergo superconducting transition. This finding creates interest to explore whether this is unique for only Sm based systems or it is also present in other rare-earth based 1111 superconductors.

First 17O NMR study of a 17O enriched LaMnO3 stoichiometric crystal

We present the synthesis and the NMR characterization of a 17O enriched LaMnO3 crystalline sample. We checked that it is single phase and, more important, stochiometric in oxygen. Its 17O enrichment estimated by NMR is about 5.5%. These first 17O NMR results obtained at T=415K in a undoped parent LaMnO3 manganite demonstrate that the two oxygen sites of the structure probe very different Mn spin correlations in the paramagnetic orbital ordered phase. This work opens the way to study experimentally the interactions responsible for the orbital order.

Strong 3p -T1u Hybridization in Ar@C60

Multilayers of fullerenes with and without endohedral Ar units, C60 and Ar@C60, were investigated by photoemission and density functional theory. The stoichiometry and the endohedral nature of Ar is checked by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron diffraction. Valence band ultraviolet photoemission spectra show a strong hybridisation of the Ar 3p valence shell with the 6T1u molecular orbital of C60. A hybridisation gap of 1.6 +/- 0.2 eV is found. This is in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) that predicts 1.47 eV, and indicates Ar@C60 to be a noble gas compound with a strong coupling between Ar and the C60 cage. No giant Ar photoemission cross section as predicted for the gas phase in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 243003 (2007)] was found.
