First candidates for γ vibrational bands built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital in odd-A Dy isotopes

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd(α,2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ= 2+ γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a Kπ=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed.

Observation of γγ-vibrations and alignments built on non-ground-state configurations in 156Dy

The exact nature of the lowest Kπ=2γ+K^π=2_γ^+ rotational bands in all deformed nuclei remains obscure. Traditionally they are assumed to be collective vibrations of the nuclear shape in the γγ degree of freedom perpendicular to the nuclear symmetry axis. Very few such γγ-bands have been traced past the usual back-bending rotational alignments of high-j nucleons. We have investigated the structure of positive-parity bands in the N=90 nucleus 156Dy, using the 148Nd(12C,4n)156Dy reaction at 65 MeV, observing the resulting γγ-ray transitions with the Gammasphere array. The even- and odd-spin members of the Kπ=2γ+K^π=2_γ^+ γγ-band are observed to 32+ and 31+ respectively. This rotational band faithfully tracks the ground-state configuration to the highest spins. The members of a possible γγ-vibration built on the aligned yrast S-band are observed to spins 28+ and 27+. An even-spin positive-parity band, observed to spin 24+, is a candidate for an aligned S-band built on the seniority-zero configuration of the 02+0_2^+ state at 676 keV. The crossing of this band with the 02+0_2^+ band is at ℏω\hbarω= 0.28(1) MeV and is consistent with the configuration of the 02+0_2^+ band not producing any blocking of the monopole pairing.

Beta-delayed gamma decay of 26P: Possible evidence of a proton halo

Background: Measurements of ββ decay provide important nuclear structure information that can be used to probe isospin asymmetries and inform nuclear astrophysics studies. Purpose: To measure the ββ-delayed γγ decay of 26^{26}P and compare the results with previous experimental results and shell-model calculations. Method: A 26^{26}P fast beam produced using nuclear fragmentation was implanted into a planar germanium detector. Its ββ-delayed γγ-ray emission was measured with an array of 16 high-purity germanium detectors. Positrons emitted in the decay were detected in coincidence to reduce the background. Results: The absolute intensities of 26^{26}P ββ-delayed γγ-rays were determined. A total of six new ββ-decay branches and 15 new γγ-ray lines have been observed for the first time in 26^{26}P ββ-decay. A complete ββ-decay scheme was built for the allowed transitions to bound excited states of 26^{26}Si. ftft values and Gamow-Teller strengths were also determined for these transitions and compared with shell model calculations and the mirror ββ-decay of 26^{26}Na, revealing significant mirror asymmetries. Conclusions: A very good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the USDB shell model is observed. The significant mirror asymmetry observed for the transition to the first excited state (δ=51(10)%δ=51(10)\%) may be evidence for a proton halo in 26^{26}P.

Mixed-symmetry octupole and hexadecapole excitations in the N=52 isotones

Background: Excitations with mixed proton-neutron symmetry have been previously observed in the N=52N=52 isotones. Besides the well established quadrupole mixed-symmetry states (MSS), octupole and hexadecapole MSS have been recently proposed for the nuclei 92^{92}Zr and 94^{94}Mo. Purpose: The heaviest stable N=52N=52 isotone 96^{96}Ru was investigated to study the evolution of octupole and hexadecapole MSS with increasing proton number. Methods: Two inelastic proton-scattering experiments on 96^{96}Ru were performed to extract branching ratios, multipole mixing ratios, and level lifetimes. From the combined data, absolute transition strengths were calculated. Results: Strong M1M1 transitions between the lowest-lying 3−3^- and 4+4^+ states were observed, providing evidence for a one-phonon mixed-symmetry character of the 32(−)3^{(-)}_2 and 42+4^+_2 states. Conclusions: sdgsdg-IBM-2 calculations were performed for 96^{96}Ru. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, pointing out a one-phonon hexadecapole mixed-symmetry character of the 42+4^+_2 state. The <31−∣∣M1∣∣32(−)>\big< 3^-_1||M1||3^{(-)}_2\big> matrix element is found to scale with the <2s+∣∣M1∣∣2ms+><2^+_{\mathrm{s}}||M1||2^+_{\mathrm{ms}}> matrix element.

Observation of Doppler broadening in ββ-delayed proton-γγ decay

Background: The Doppler broadening of γγ-ray peaks due to nuclear recoil from ββ-delayed nucleon emission can be used to measure the energies of the nucleons. This method has never been tested using ββ-delayed proton emission or applied to a recoil heavier than A=10A=10. Purpose: To test and apply this Doppler broadening method using γγ-ray peaks from the 26^{26}P(βpγβpγ)25^{25}Al decay sequence. Methods: A fast beam of 26^{26}P was implanted into a planar Ge detector, which was used as a 26^{26}P ββ-decay trigger. The SeGA array of high-purity Ge detectors was used to detect γγ rays from the 26^{26}P(βpγβpγ)25^{25}Al decay sequence. Results: Radiative Doppler broadening in ββ-delayed proton-γγ decay was observed for the first time. The Doppler broadening analysis method was verified using the 1613 keV γγ-ray line for which the proton energies were previously known. The 1776 keV γγ ray de-exciting the 2720 keV 25^{25}Al level was observed in 26^{26}P(βpγβpγ)25^{25}Al decay for the first time and used to determine that the center-of-mass energy of the proton emission feeding the 2720-keV level is 5.1 ±\pm 1.0 (stat.) ±\pm 0.6 (syst.) MeV, corresponding to a 26^{26}Si excitation energy of 13.3 ±\pm 1.0 (stat.) ±\pm 0.6 (syst.) MeV for the proton-emitting level. Conclusions: The Doppler broadening method has been demonstrated to provide practical measurements of the energies for ββ-delayed nucleon emissions populating excited states of nuclear recoils at least as heavy as A=25A=25.

Classical-Nova Contribution to the Milky Way's 26^{26}Al Abundance: Exit Channel of the Key 25^{25}Al(p,γp,γ)26^{26}Si Resonance

Classical novae are expected to contribute to the 1809-keV Galactic γγ-ray emission by producing its precursor 26^{26}Al, but the yield depends on the thermonuclear rate of the unmeasured 25^{25}Al(p,γp,γ)26^{26}Si reaction. Using the ββ decay of 26^{26}P to populate the key Jπ=3+J^π=3^+ resonance in this reaction, we report the first evidence for the observation of its exit channel via a 1741.6±0.6(stat)±0.3(syst)1741.6 \pm 0.6 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.3 (\textrm{syst}) keV primary γγ ray, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. By combining the measured γγ-ray energy and intensity with other experimental data on 26^{26}Si, we find the center-of-mass energy and strength of the resonance to be Er=414.9±0.6(stat)±0.3(syst)±0.6(lit.)E_r = 414.9 \pm 0.6(\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.3 (\textrm{syst}) \pm 0.6(\textrm{lit.}) keV and ωγ=23±6(stat)−10+11(lit.)ωγ= 23 \pm 6 (\textrm{stat})^{+11}_{-10}(\textrm{lit.}) meV, respectively, where the last uncertainties are from adopted literature data. We use hydrodynamic nova simulations to model 26^{26}Al production showing that these measurements effectively eliminate the dominant experimental nuclear-physics uncertainty and we estimate that novae may contribute up to 30% of the Galactic 26^{26}Al.

Evidence for shape coexistence in 98^{98}Mo

A γγγγ angular correlation experiment has been performed to investigate the low-energy states of the nucleus 98^{98}Mo. The new data, including spin assignments, multipole mixing ratios and lifetimes reveal evidence for shape coexistence and mixing in 98^{98}Mo, arising from a proton intruder configuration. This result is reproduced by a theoretical calculation within the proton-neutron interacting boson model with configuration mixing, based on microscopic energy density functional theory. The microscopic calculation indicates the importance of the proton particle-hole excitation across the Z=40 sub-shell closure and the subsequent mixing between spherical vibrational and the γγ-soft equilibrium shapes in 98^{98}Mo.

The electric dipole response of 76^{76}Se above 4 MeV

The dipole response of 3476^{76}_{34}Se in the energy range 4 to 9 MeV has been analyzed using a (γ⃗,γ′)(\vecγ,γ') polarized photon scattering technique, performed at the High Intensity γγ-Ray Source facility, to complement previous work performed using unpolarized photons. The results of this work offer both an enhanced sensitivity scan of the dipole response and an unambiguous determination of the parities of the observed J=1 states. The dipole response is found to be dominated by E1E1 excitations, and can reasonably be attributed to a pygmy dipole resonance. Evidence is presented to suggest that a significant amount of directly unobserved excitation strength is present in the region, due to unobserved branching transitions in the decays of resonantly excited states. The dipole response of the region is underestimated when considering only ground state decay branches. We investigate the electric dipole response theoretically, performing calculations in a 3D cartesian-basis time-dependent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock framework.

Investigation of octupole vibrational states in 150Nd via inelastic proton scattering (p,p'g)

Octupole vibrational states were studied in the nucleus 150Nd^{150}\mathrm{Nd} via inelastic proton scattering with $\unit[10.9]{MeV}$ protons which are an excellent probe to excite natural parity states. For the first time in 150Nd^{150}\mathrm{Nd}, both the scattered protons and the γγ rays were detected in coincidence giving the possibility to measure branching ratios in detail. Using the coincidence technique, the B(E1)B(E1) ratios of the decaying transitions for 10 octupole vibrational states and other negative-parity states to the yrast band were determined and compared to the Alaga rule. The positive and negative-parity states revealed by this experiment are compared with Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) calculations performed in the (spdf) boson space. The calculations are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, both for positive and negative-parity states.
