Sheared stably stratified turbulence and large-scale waves in a lid driven cavity

We investigated experimentally stably stratified turbulent flows in a lid driven cavity with a non-zero vertical mean temperature gradient in order to identify the parameters governing the mean and turbulent flows and to understand their effects on the momentum and heat transfer. We found that the mean velocity patterns (e.g., the form and the sizes of the large-scale circulations) depend strongly on the degree of the temperature stratification. In the case of strong stable stratification, the strong turbulence region is located in the vicinity of the main large-scale circulation. We detected the large-scale nonlinear oscillations in the case of strong stable stratification which can be interpreted as nonlinear internal gravity waves. The ratio of the main energy-containing frequencies of these waves in velocity and temperature fields in the nonlinear stage is about 2. The amplitude of the waves increases in the region of weak turbulence (near the bottom wall of the cavity), whereby the vertical mean temperature gradient increases.

Compound decision in the presence of proxies with an application to spatio-temporal data

We study the problem of incorporating covariates in a compound decision setup. It is desired to estimate the means of $n$ response variables, which are independent and normally distributed, and each is accompanied by a vector of covariates. We suggest a method that involves non-parametric empirical Bayes techniques and may be viewed as a generalization of the celebrated Fay-Herriot (1979) method. Some optimality properties of our method are proved. We also compare it numerically with Fay-Herriot and other methods, using a `semi-real' data set that involves spatio-temporal covariates, where the goal is to estimate certain proportions in many small areas (Statistical-Areas)

The Visualization of the Road Coloring Algorithm in the package TESTAS

A synchronizing word of a deterministic automaton is a word in the alphabet of colors of its edges that maps the automaton to a single state. A coloring of edges of a directed graph is synchronizing if the coloring turns the graph into a deterministic finite automaton possessing a synchronizing word. The road coloring problem is the problem of synchronizing coloring of a directed finite strongly connected graph with constant outdegree of all its vertices if the greatest common divisor of the lengths of all its cycles is one. A polynomial time algorithm of the road coloring has been based on recent positive solution of this old famous problem. One can use our new visualization program for demonstration of the algorithm as well as for visualization of the transition graph of any finite automaton. The visual image presents some structure properties of the transition graph. This help tool is linear in the size of the automaton.
