Modulation Instability and Phase-Shifted Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Recurrence

Instabilities are common phenomena frequently observed in nature, sometimes leading to unexpected catastrophes and disasters in seemingly normal conditions. The simplest form of instability in a distributed system is its response to a harmonic modulation. Such instability has special names in various branches of physics and is generally known as modulation instability (MI). The MI is tightly related to Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) recurrence since breather solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) are known to accurately describe growth and decay of modulationally unstable waves in conservative systems. Here, we report theoretical, numerical and experimental evidence of the effect of dissipation on FPU cycles in a super wave tank, namely their shift in a determined order. In showing that ideal NLSE breather solutions can describe such dissipative nonlinear dynamics, our results may impact the interpretation of a wide range of new physics scenarios.

Experiments on wind-perturbed rogue wave hydrodynamics using the Peregrine breather model

Being considered as a prototype for description of oceanic rogue waves (RWs), the Peregrine breather solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) has been recently observed and intensely investigated experimentally in particular within the context of water waves. Here, we report the experimental results showing the evolution of the Peregrine solution in the presence of wind forcing in the direction of wave propagation. The results show the persistence of the breather evolution dynamics even in the presence of strong wind and chaotic wave field generated by it. Furthermore, we have shown that characteristic spectrum of the Peregrine breather persists even at the highest values of the generated wind velocities thus making it a viable characteristic for prediction of rogue waves.

Hydrodynamic Supercontinuum

We demonstrate experimentally multi-bound-soliton solutions of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in the context of surface gravity waves. In particular, the Satsuma-Yajima N-soliton solution with N=2,3,4 is investigated in detail. Such solutions, also known as breathers on zero background, lead to periodic self-focussing in the wave group dynamics, and the consequent generation of a steep localized carrier wave underneath the group envelope. Our experimental results are compared with predictions from the NLS for low steepness initial conditions where wave-breaking does not occur, with very good agreement. We also show the first detailed experimental study of irreversible massive spectral broadening of the water wave spectrum, which we refer to by analogy with optics as the first controlled observation of hydrodynamic supercontinuum a process which is shown to be associated with the fission of the initial multi-soliton bound state into individual fundamental solitons similar to what has been observe in optics.

Three-dimensional rogue waves in non-stationary parabolic potentials

Using symmetry analysis we systematically present a higher-dimensional similarity transformation reducing the (3+1)-dimensional inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation with variable coefficients and parabolic potential to the (1+1)-dimensional NLS equation with constant coefficients. This transformation allows us to relate certain class of localized exact solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional case to the variety of solutions of integrable NLS equation of (1+1)-dimensional case. As an example, we illustrated our technique using two lowest order rational solutions of the NLS equation as seeding functions to obtain rogue wave-like solutions localized in three dimensions that have complicated evolution in time including interactions between two time-dependent rogue wave solutions. The obtained three-dimensional rogue wave-like solutions may raise the possibility of relative experiments and potential applications in nonlinear optics and BECs.

Modulation instability, Akhmediev Breathers and continuous wave supercontinuum generation

Numerical simulations of the onset phase of continuous wave supercontinuum generation from modulation instability show that the structure of the field as it develops can be interpreted in terms of the properties of Akhmediev Breathers. Numerical and analytical results are compared with experimental measurements of spectral broadening in photonic crystal fiber using nanosecond pulses
