Influence of disorder on a Bragg microcavity

Using the resonant-state expansion for leaky optical modes of a planar Bragg microcavity, we investigate the influence of disorder on its fundamental cavity mode. We model the disorder by randomly varying the thickness of the Bragg-pair slabs (composing the mirrors) and the cavity, and calculate the resonant energy and linewidth of each disordered microcavity exactly, comparing the results with the resonant-state expansion for a large basis set and within its first and second orders of perturbation theory. We show that random shifts of interfaces cause a growth of the inhomogeneous broadening of the fundamental mode that is proportional to the magnitude of disorder. Simultaneously, the quality factor of the microcavity decreases inversely proportional to the square of the magnitude of disorder. We also find that first-order perturbation theory works very accurately up to a reasonably large disorder magnitude, especially for calculating the resonance energy, which allows us to derive qualitatively the scaling of the microcavity properties with disorder strength.

Nanoparticle lattices with bases: Fourier modal method and dipole approximation

The utilization of periodic structures such as photonic crystals and metasurfaces is common for light manipulation at nanoscales. One of the most widely used computational approaches to consider them and design effective optical devices is the Fourier modal method (FMM) based on Fourier decomposition of electromagnetic fields. Nevertheless, calculating of periodic structures with small inclusions is often a difficult task, since they induce lots of high-$k_\parallel$ harmonics that should be taken into account. In this paper, we consider small particle lattices with bases and construct their scattering matrices via discrete dipole approximation (DDA). Afterwards, these matrices are implemented in FMM for consideration of complicated layered structures. We show the performance of the proposed hybrid approach by its application to a lattice, which routes left and right circularly polarized incident light to guided modes propagating in opposite directions. We also demonstrate its precision by spectra comparison with finite element method (FEM) calculations. The high speed and precision of this approach enable the calculation of angle-dependent spectra with very high resolution in a reasonable time, which allows resolving narrow lines unobservable by other methods.

Vertical routing of spinning dipoles radiation from a chiral metamembrane

We propose a perfect photonic router based on a specially designed chiral bi-metasurface membrane for spin-polarized point light sources. Due to the mirror symmetry breaking in the chiral metamembrane, the radiation power flux of the clockwise and counterclockwise spinning dipoles to the opposite sides of the slab becomes different. We show that spinning dipoles in the specially designed chiral D$_4$-symmetrical bi-metasurface membrane can emit light either upwards or downwards depending on their rotation direction. We attribute this phenomenon to the Fano-resonance effect which is a result of the guided modes coupling with the far field. We show the advantage of D$_4$-symmetrical structures for the achievement of 100\% routing efficiency. This phenomenon can find applications in spintronics for spin-selective inter-chip coupling or as a measurement tool of spin polarization in memory cells.

Theory of condensation of indirect excitons in a trap

We present theoretical studies of condensation of indirect excitons in a trap. Our model quantifies the effect of screening of the trap potential by indirect excitons on exciton condensation. The theoretical studies are applied to a system of indirect excitons in a GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum well structure in a diamond-shaped electrostatic trap where exciton condensation was studied in earlier experiments. The estimated condensation temperature of the indirect excitons in the trap reaches hundreds of milliKelvin.

Controlling circular polarization of light emitted by quantum dots using chiral photonic crystal slab

We study the polarization properties of light emitted by quantum dots that are embedded in chiral photonic crystal structures made of achiral planar GaAs waveguides. A modification of the electromagnetic mode structure due to the chiral grating fabricated by partial etching of the wave\-guide layer has been shown to result in a high circular polarization degree $ρ_c$ of the quantum dot emission in the absence of external magnetic field. The physical nature of the phenomenon can be understood in terms of the reciprocity principle taking into account the structural symmetry. At the resonance wavelength, the magnitude of $|ρ_c|$ is predicted to exceed 98%. The experimentally achieved value of $|ρ_c|=81$% is smaller, which is due to the contribution of unpolarized light scattered by grating defects, thus breaking its periodicity. The achieved polarization degree estimated removing the unpolarized nonresonant background from the emission spectra can be estimated to be as high as 96%, close to the theoretical prediction.

Nonlinear optical spectroscopy of indirect excitons in biased coupled quantum wells

Indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells are long-living quasi-particles, explored in the studies of collective quantum states. We demonstrate, that despite the extremely low oscillator strength, their spin and population dynamics can by addressed by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. Our experiments make it possible to unravel and compare spin dynamics of direct excitons, indirect excitons and residual free electrons in coupled quantum wells. Measured spin relaxation time of indirect excitons exceeds not only one of direct excitons, but also one of free electrons by two orders of magnitude.

Voltage control of the spin-dependent interaction constants of Dipolaritons and its application to Optical Parametric Oscillator

Dipolariton is a voltage controlled mixture of direct and indirect excitons in asymmetric double quantum wells coupled by resonant carrier tunneling, and a microcavity photon. We calculate the voltage dependence of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet interaction parameters $α_{1}$ and $α_{2}$. Both parameters can reach values one order of magnitude larger than that of exciton-polaritons thanks to the strong interaction between indirect excitons. We show that the variation of the indirect exciton fraction of the dipolaritons induces a changes of sign of $α_{2}$ increasing voltage: the interaction passes from attractive to repulsive. For large enough voltage $α_{2}$ becomes larger than $α_{1}$ which in principle can lead to the formation of a circularly polarised dipolariton condensate. We propose an application of the $α_{2}$ dependence to a voltage-controlled dipolaritonic optical parametric oscillator. The change of sign of $α_{2}$ allows an on-site control of the linear polarization degree of the optical signal and its on-demand inversion.

Nonlinear Optical Probe of Indirect Excitons

We propose the application of nonlinear optics for studies of spatially indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. We demonstrate, that despite their vanishing oscillator strength, indirect excitons can strongly contribute to the photoinduced reflectivity and Kerr rotation. This phenomenon is governed by the interaction between direct and indirect excitons. Both dark and bright states of indirect excitons can be probed by these nonlinear optical techniques.

Spin multistability of cavity polaritons in a magnetic field

Spin transitions are studied theoretically and experimentally in a resonantly excited system of cavity polaritons in a magnetic field. Weak pair interactions in this boson system make possible fast and massive spin flips occurring at critical amplitudes due to the interplay between amplitude dependent shifts of eigenstates and the Zeeman splitting. Dominant spin of a condensate can be toggled forth and back by tuning of the pump intensity only, which opens the way for ultra-fast spin switchings of polariton condensates on a picosecond timescale.

Tight-binding calculations of image charge effects in colloidal nanoscale platelets of CdSe

CdSe nanoplatelets show perfectly quantized thicknesses of few monolayers. They present a situation of extreme, yet well defined quantum confinement. Due to large dielectric contrast between the semiconductor and its ligand environment, interaction between carriers and their dielectric images strongly renormalize bare single particle states. We discuss the electronic properties of this original system in an advanced tight-binding model, and show that Coulomb interactions, including self-energy corrections and enhanced electron-hole interaction, lead to exciton binding energies up to several hundred meVs.

Skyrmion Formation and Optical Spin-Hall Effect in an Expanding Coherent Cloud of Indirect Excitons

We provide a theoretical description of the polarization pattern and phase singularities experimentally evidenced recently in a condensate of indirect excitons [H. High et al., Nature 483, 584-588 (2012)]. We show that the averaging of the electron and hole orbital motion leads to a comparable spin-orbit interaction for both type of carriers. We demonstrate that the interplay between a radial coherent flux of bright indirect excitons and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction results in the formation of spin domains and of topological defects similar to Skyrmions. We reproduce qualitatively all the features of the experimental data and obtain polarization pattern as in the optical spin Hall effect despite the different symmetry of the spin-orbit interactions.

Bistability and nonequilibrium transitions in the optically polarized system of cavity polaritons under nanosecond-long resonant excitation

The polarization dependence of nonequilibrium transitions in a multistable cavity-polariton system is studied under a nanosecond long resonant optical excitation at the normal and magic angle incidences with various polarizations of the pump beam. The temporal correlations between the frequency, intensity, and optical polarization of the intra-cavity field, which all undergo sharp threshold-like changes due to the spin dependent interaction of cavity polaritons, are visualized. The observed dynamics cannot be reproduced within the conventional semi-classical model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. To explain the observed phenomena, it is necessary to take into account the unpolarized exciton reservoir which brings on additional blueshift of bright excitons, equal in the $σ^+$ and $σ^-$ polarization components. This model explains the effect of polarization instability under both pulsed and continuous wave resonant excitation conditions, consistently with the spin ring pattern formation that has recently been observed under Gaussian shaped excitation.

Coherent interactions between phonons and exciton or exciton-polariton condensates

We analyse the interaction of exciton and exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavity with a coherent acoustic wave. An analytical solution for the dispersion of excitations of coupled condensate-phonon system is found in the approximation of k-independent interactions. Accounting for k-dependence results in a stronger modification of the dispersion, and even in the appearance of the "roton instability" region.

Delay and distortion of slow light pulses by excitons in ZnO

Light pulses propagating through ZnO undergo distortions caused by both bound and free excitons. Numerous lines of bound excitons dissect the pulse and induce slowing of light around them, to the extend dependent on their nature. Exciton-polariton resonances determine the overall pulse delay and attenuation. The delay time of the higher-energy edge of a strongly curved light stripe approaches 1.6 ns at 3.374 eV with a 0.3 mm propagation length. Modelling the data of cw and time-of-flight spectroscopies has enabled us to determine the excitonic parameters, inherent for bulk ZnO. We reveal the restrictions on these parameters induced by the light attenuation, as well as a discrepancy between the parameters characterizing the surface and internal regions of the crystal.

Emission properties of an oscillating point dipole from a gold Yagi-Uda nanoantenna array

We investigate numerically the interaction of an oscillating point dipole with a periodic array of optical Yagi-Uda nanoantennas in the weak coupling limit. A very strong near-field enhancement of the dipole emission by the resonant plasmon mode in the feed element is predicted in this structure. It is shown that the enhancement strength depends strongly on the dipole position, the direction of the dipole moment, and the oscillation frequency. The radiative intensity of the point dipole from appropriate places next to one feed element may exceed the radiative intensity of an equivalent dipole in free-space by a factor of hundred. In spite of only one director used in each nanoantenna of the array, the far-field emission pattern is highly directed. The radiative efficiency (the ratio of the radiative to the full emission) appears to be around 20%.

Excitonic parameters of GaN studied by time-of-flight spectroscopy

We refine excitonic parameters of bulk GaN by means of time-of-flight spectroscopy of light pulses propagating through crystals. The influence of elastic photon scattering is excluded by using the multiple reflections of the pulses from crystal boundaries. The shapes of these reflexes in the time-energy plane depict the variation of the group velocity induced by excitonic resonances. Modeling of the shapes, as well as other spectra, shows that a homogeneous width of the order of 10 μeV characterizes the exciton-polariton resonances within the crystal. The oscillator strength of A and B exciton-polaritons is determined as 0.0022 and 0.0016, respectively.

Multistability of cavity exciton-polaritons affected by the thermally generated exciton reservoir

Until now, the generation of an excitonic reservoir in a cavity polariton system under quasi-resonant pumping has always been neglected. We show that in microcavities having a small Rabi splitting (typically GaAs cavities with a single quantum well), this reservoir can be efficiently populated by polariton-phonon scattering. We consider the influence of the exciton reservoir on the energy shifts of the resonantly pumped polariton modes. We show that the presence of this reservoir effectively reduces the spin anisotropy of the polariton-polariton interaction, in agreement with recent experimental measurements, where the multistability of cavity polaritons has been analyzed

Dispersion and polarization conversion of whispering gallery modes in arbitrary cross-section nanowires

We investigate theoretically the optical properties of Nano-Wires (NWs) with cross sections having either discrete or cylindrical symmetry. The material forming the wire is birefringent, showing a different dielectric response in the plane and along the axis of the wire, which is typically the case for wires made of wurtzite materials, such as ZnO or GaN. We look for solutions of Maxwell`s equations having the proper symmetry. The dispersions and the linewidths versus angle of incident light for the modes having high momentum in the cross-section plane, so called whispering gallery modes, are calculated. We put a special emphasis on the case of hexagonal cross sections. The energy positions of the modes for a set of azimuthal quantum numbers are shown. We demonstrate the dependence of the energy splitting between TE and TM modes versus birefringence. The polarization conversion from TE to TM with increase of the axial wave vectoris discussed for both cylindrical and discrete symmetry.

Terahertz radiation due to random grating coupled surface plasmon polaritons

We report on terahertz (THz) radiation under electrical pumping from a degenerate semiconductor possessing an electron accumulation layer. In InN, the random grating formed by topographical defects provides high-efficiency coupling of surface plasmon polaritons supported by the accumulation layer to the THz emission. The principal emission band occupies the 2-6 THz spectral range. We establish a link between the shape of emission spectra and the structural factor of the random grating and show that the change of slope of power dependencies is characteristic for temperature-dependent plasmonic mechanisms. The super-linear rise of a THz emission intensity on applied electric power provides advantage of such materials in emission yield.
