Circulator function in a Josephson junction circuit and braiding of Majorana zero modes

We propose a scheme for the circulator function in a superconducting circuit consisting of a three-Josephson junction loop and a trijunction. In this study we obtain the exact Lagrangian of the system by deriving the effective potential from the fundamental boundary conditions. We subsequently show that we can selectively choose the direction of current flowing through the branches connected at the trijunction, which performs a circulator function. Further, we use this circulator function for a non-Abelian braiding of Majorana zero modes (MZMs). In the branches of the system we introduce pairs of MZMs which interact with each other through the phases of trijunction. The circulator function determines the phases of the trijunction and thus the coupling between the MZMs to gives rise to the braiding operation. We modify the system so that MZMs might be coupled to the external ones to perform qubit operations in a scalable design.

Current biased gradiometric flux qubit in a circuit-QED architecture

We propose a scheme for controlling the gradiometric flux qubit (GFQ) by applying an ac bias current in a circuit-QED architecture. The GFQ is insensitive to the magnetic flux fluctuations, which at the same time makes it challenging to manipulate the qubit states by an external magnetic field. In this study, we demonstrate that an ac bias current applied to the $α$-junction of the GFQ can control the qubit states. Further, the present scheme is robust against the charge fluctuation as well as the magnetic flux fluctuations, promising a long coherence time for quantum gate operations. We introduce a circuit-QED architecture to perform the single and two-qubit operations with a sufficiently strong coupling strength.

Coupling qubits in circuit-QED cavities connected by a bridge qubit

We analyze a coupling scheme for qubits in different cavities of circuit-QED architecture. In contrast to the usual scheme where the cavities are coupled by an interface capacitance we employ a bridge qubit connecting cavities to mediate two-qubit coupling. This active coupling scheme makes it possible to switch on/off and adjust the strength of qubit-qubit coupling, which is essential for scalability of quantum circuit. By transforming the Hamiltonian we obtain an exact expression of two-qubit coupling in the rotating-wave approximation. For the general case of $n$ qubits the Hamiltonian can produce the W state as an eigenstate of the system. We calculate the decay rate of the coupled qubit-resonator system to find that it is viable in real experiments.

Ultrastrong coupling in a scalable design for circuit QED with superconducting flux qubits

We theoretically study a circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) architecture with superconducting flux qubits. The qubit is coupled to the transmission line resonator by an ac current originating from the current mode of the resonator. Ultrastrong coupling can be obtained by varying the capacitance between the qubit and the resonator. We propose a scalable design where the two-qubit coupling can be achieved.

Implementation of three-qubit Toffoli gate in a single step

Single-step implementations of multi-qubit gates are generally believed to provide a simpler design, a faster operation, and a lower decoherence. For coupled three qubits interacting with a photon field, a realizable scheme for a single-step Toffoli gate is investigated. We find that the three qubit system can be described by four effective modified Jaynes-Cummings models in the states of two control qubits. Within the rotating wave approximation, the modified Jaynes-Cummings models are shown to be reduced to the conventional Jaynes-Cummings models with renormalized couplings between qubits and photon fields. A single-step Toffoli gate is shown to be realizable with tuning the four characteristic oscillation periods that satisfy a commensurate condition. Possible values of system parameters are estimated for single-step Toffli gate. From numerical calculation, further, our single-step Toffoli gate operation errors are discussed due to imperfections in system parameters, which shows that a Toffoli gate with high fidelity can be obtained by adjusting pairs of the photon-qubit and the qubit-qubit coupling strengthes. In addition, a decoherence effect on the Toffoli gate operation is discussed due to a thermal reservoir.

Readout of superconducting flux qubit state with a Cooper pair box

We study a readout scheme of superconducting flux qubit state with a Cooper pair box as a transmon. The qubit states consist of the superpositions of two degenerate states where the charge and phase degrees of freedom are entangled. Owing to the robustness of transmon against external fluctuations, our readout scheme enables the quantum non-demolition and single-shot measurement of flux qubit states. The qubit state readout can be performed by using the non-linear Josephson amplifiers after a $π/2$-rotation driven by an ac-electric field.

Sondheimer Oscillation as a Fingerprint of Surface Dirac Fermions

Topological states of matter challenge the paradigm of symmetry breaking, characterized by gapless boundary modes and protected by the topological property of the ground state. Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed that semiconductors of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ belong to such a class of materials. Here, we present undisputable evidence for the existence of gapless surface Dirac fermions from transport in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$. We observe Sondheimer oscillation in magnetoresistance (MR). This oscillation originates from the quantization of motion due to the confinement of electrons within the surface layer. Based on Sondheimer's transport theory, we determine the thickness of the surface state from the oscillation data. In addition, we uncover the topological nature of the surface state, fitting consistently both the non-oscillatory part of MR and the Hall resistance. The side-jump contribution turns out to dominate around 1 T in Hall resistance while the Berry-curvature effect dominates in 3 T $\sim$ 4 T.

Strong Coupling of a Cavity QED Architecture for a Current-biased Flux Qubit

We propose a scheme for a cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) architecture for a current-biased superconducting flux qubit with three Josephson junctions. The qubit operation is performed by using a bias current coming from the current mode of the circuit resonator. If the phase differences of junctions are to be coupled with the bias current, the Josephson junctions should be arranged in an asymmetric way in the qubit loop. Our QED scheme provides a strong coupling between the flux qubit and the transmission line resonator of the circuit.

Commensurate Quantum Oscillations in Coupled Qubits

We study the coupled-qubit oscillation driven by an oscillating field. When the period of the non-resonant mode is commensurate with that of the resonant mode of the Rabi oscillation, we show that the controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate operation can be demonstrated. For a weak coupling the CNOT gate operation is achievable by the commensurate oscillations, while for a sufficiently strong coupling it can be done for arbitrary parameter values. By finely tuning the amplitude of oscillating field it is shown that the high fidelity of the CNOT gate can be obtained for any fixed coupling strength and qubit energy gap in experiments.

Superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling approach : Application of the SU(2) slave-rotor theory to the Hubbard model

We propose a mechanism of superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling regime, where the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mechanism such as the spin-fluctuation approach is difficult to apply. Based on the SU(2) slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, we find that the single energy scale for the amplitude formation of Cooper pairs and their phase coherence is separated into two energy scales, allowing the so called pseudogap state where such Cooper pairs are coherent locally but not globally, interpreted as realization of the density-phase uncertainty principle. This superconducting state shows the temperature-linear decreasing ratio of superfluid weight, resulting from strong phase fluctuations.

Superconductor-ferromagnet junction phase qubit

We propose a scheme for a phase qubit in an SIFIS junction, consisting of bulk superconductors (S), a proximity-induced ferromagnet (F), and insulating barriers (I). The qubit state is constituted by 0 and $π$ phase states of the junction, in which the charging energy of the junction leads to the superposition of the two states. The qubit is operated by the gate voltage applied to the ferromagnet, and insensitive to the decoherence sources existing in other superconducting qubits. We discuss a scalable scheme for qubit measurement and tunable two-qubit coupling.

Macroscopic Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W States in Flux Qubits

We investigate two types of genuine three-qubit entanglement, known as the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ) and W states, in a macroscopic quantum system. Superconducting flux qubits are considered theoretically in order to generate such states. A phase coupling is proposed to offer enough strength of interactions between qubits. While an excited state can be the W state, the GHZ state is formed at the ground state of the three flux qubits. The GHZ and W states are shown to be robust against external flux fluctuations for feasible experimental realizations.

Macroscopic Many-Qubit Interactions in Superconducting Flux Qubits

Superconducting flux qubits are considered to investigate macroscopic many-qubit interactions. Many-qubit states based on current states can be manipulated through the current-phase relation in each superconducting loop. For flux qubit systems comprised of $N$ qubit loops, a general expression of low energy Hamiltonian is presented in terms of low energy levels of qubits and macroscopic quantum tunnelings between the many-qubit states. Many-qubit interactions classified by {\em Ising type- or tunnel-}exchange interactions can be observable experimentally. Flux qubit systems can provide various artificial-spin systems to study many-body systems that cannot be found naturally.
