A fractional Hadamard formula and applications

We consider the domain dependence of the best constant in the subcritical fractional Sobolev constant, $$ λ_{s,p}(Ω):=\inf \left\{ [u]_{H^s(\mathbb{R}^N)}^2,\,\, u\in C^\infty_c(Ω),\,\, \|u\|_{L^p(Ω)}=1 \right\}, $$ where $s\in (0,1)$, $Ω$ is bounded of class $C^{1,1}$ and $p\in [1, \frac{2N}{N-2s})$ if $2s<N$, $p\in [1, \infty)$ if $2s\geq N=1$. Explicitly, we derive formula for the one-sided shape derivative of the mapping $Ω\mapsto λ_{s,p}(Ω)$ under domain perturbations. In the case where $ λ_{s,p}(Ω)$ admits a unique positive minimizer (e.g. $p=1$ or $p=2$), our result implies a nonlocal version of the classical variational Hadamard formula for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on $Ω$. Thanks to the formula for our one-sided shape derivative, we characterize smooth local minimizers of $λ_{s,p}(Ω)$ under volume-preserving deformations, and we find that they are balls if $p\in \{1\}\cup [2,\infty)$. Finally, we consider the maximization problem for $λ_{s,p}(Ω)$ among annular-shaped domains of fixed volume of the type $B\setminus \overline B'$, where $B$ is a fixed ball and $B'$ is ball whose position is varied within $B$. We prove that, for $p\in \{1,2\}$, the value $λ_{s,p}(B\setminus \overline B')$ is maximal when the two balls are concentric.

A Hopf lemma for the regional fractional Laplacian

We provide a Hopf boundary lemma for the regional fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s_Ω$, with $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ a bounded open set. More precisely, given $u$ a pointwise or weak super-solution of the equation $(-Δ)^s_Ω u = c(x)u$ in $Ω$, we show that the ratio $u(x)/(\mathrm{dist}(x,\partialΩ))^{2s-1}$ is strictly positive as $x$ approaches the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$. We also prove a strong maximum principle for distributional super-solutions.

Regional fractional Laplacians: Boundary regularity

We study boundary regularity for solutions to a class of equations involving the so called regional fractional Lapacians $(-Δ)^s_Ω$, with $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. Recall that the regional fractional Laplacians are generated by symmetric stable processes which are not allowed to jump outside $Ω$. We consider weak solutions to the equation $(-Δ)^s_Ωw(x)=p.v.\int_Ω\frac{w(x)-w(y)}{|x-y|^{N+2s}}\, dy=f(x)$, for $s\in (0,1)$, subject to zero Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. The boundary conditions are defined by considering $w$ as well as the test functions in the fractional Sobolev spaces $H^s(Ω)$ or $H^s_0(Ω)$ respectively. While the interior regularity is well understood for these problems, little is known in the boundary regularity, mainly for the Neumann problem. Under optimal regularity assumptions on $Ω$ and provided $f\in L^p(Ω)$, we show that $w\in C^{2s-N/p}(\overline Ω)$ in the case of zero Neumann boundary conditions. As a consequence for $2s-N/p>1$, $w\in C^{1,2s-\frac{N}{p}-1}(\overlineΩ)$. As what concerned the Dirichlet problem, we obtain ${w}/{δ^{2s-1}}\in C^{1-N/p}(\overlineΩ)$, provided $p>N$ and $s\in (1/2,1)$, where $δ(x)=\textrm{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. To prove these results, we first classify all solutions having a certain growth at infinity when $Ω$ is a half-space and the right hand side is zero. We then carry over a fine blow up and some compactness arguments to get the results.

Nonlocal diffusion of smooth sets

We consider normal velocity of smooth sets evolving by the $s-$fractional diffusion. We prove that for small time, the normal velocity of such sets is nearly proportional to the mean curvature of the boundary of the initial set for $s\in [\frac{1}{2}, 1)$ while, for $s\in (0, \frac{1}{2})$, it is nearly proportional to the fractional mean curvature of the initial set. Our results show that the motion by (fractional) mean curvature flow can be approximated by fractional heat diffusion and by a diffusion by means of harmonic extension of smooth sets.

Regularity results for nonlocal equations and applications

We introduce the concept of $C^{m,α}$-nonlocal operators, extending the notion of second order elliptic operator in divergence form with $C^{m,α}$-coefficients. We then derive the nonlocal analogue of the key existing results for elliptic equations in divergence form, notably the Hölder continuity of the gradient of the solutions in the case of $C^{0,α}$-coefficients and the classical Shauder estimates for $C^{m+1,α}$-coefficients. We further apply the regularity results for $C^{m,α}$-nonlocal operators to derive optimal higher order regularity estimates of Lipschitz graphs with prescribed Nonlocal Mean Curvature. Applications to nonlocal equation on manifolds are also provided.

Unbounded periodic solutions to Serrin's overdetermined boundary value problem

We study the existence of nontrivial unbounded domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ such that the overdetermined problem $$ -Δu = 1 \quad \text{in $Ω$}, \qquad u=0, \quad \partial_νu=\textrm{const} \qquad \text{on $\partial Ω$} $$ admits a solution $u$. By this, we complement Serrin's classification result from 1971 which yields that every bounded domain admitting a solution of the above problem is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$. The domains we construct are periodic in some variables and radial in the other variables, and they bifurcate from a straight (generalized) cylinder or slab. We also show that these domains are uniquely self Cheeger relative to a period cell for the problem.

Curves and surfaces with constant nonlocal mean curvature: meeting Alexandrov and Delaunay

We are concerned with hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter under a volume constraint. Our results are twofold. First we prove the nonlocal analogue of the Alexandrov result characterizing spheres as the only closed embedded hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant mean curvature. Here we use the moving planes method. Our second result establishes the existence of periodic bands or "cylinders" in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with constant nonlocal mean curvature and bifurcating from a straight band. These are Delaunay type bands in the nonlocal setting. Here we use a Lyapunov-Schmidt procedure for a quasilinear type fractional elliptic equation.

Ground states and concentration phenomena for the fractional Schrödinger equation

We consider here solutions of the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation $$ε^{2s}(-Δ)^s u+V(x)u=u^p.$$ We show that concentration points must be critical points for $V$. We also prove that, if the potential $V$ is coercive and has a unique global minimum, then ground states concentrate suitably at such minimal point as $ε$ tends to zero. In addition, if the potential $V$ is radial, then the minimizer is unique provided $ε$ is small.

Profile expansion for the first nontrivial Steklov eigenvalue in Riemannian manifolds

We study the problem of maximizing the first nontrivial Steklov eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami Operator among subdomains of fixed volume of a Riemannian manifold. More precisely, we study the expansion of the corresponding profile of this isoperimetric (or isochoric) problem as the volume tends to zero. The main difficulty encountered in our study is the lack of existence results for maximizing domains and the possible degeneracy of the first nontrivial Steklov eigenvalue, which makes it difficult to tackle the problem with domain variation techniques. As a corollary of our results, we deduce local comparison principles for the profile in terms of the scalar curvature on $\mathcal{M}$. In the case where the underlying manifold is a closed surface, we obtain a global expansion and thus a global comparison principle.

The role of the mean curvature in a Hardy-Sobolev trace inequality

The Hardy-Sobolev trace inequality can be obtained via Harmonic extensions on the half-space of the Stein and Weiss weighted Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. In this paper we consider a bounded domain and study the influence of the boundary mean curvature in the Hardy-Sobolev trace inequality on the underlying domain. We prove existence of minimizers when the mean curvature is negative at the singular point of the Hardy potential.

Positive solutions to some nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations via a min-max procedure

The existence of a positive solution to the following fractional semilinear equation is proven, in a situation where a ground state solution may not exist. More precisely, we consider for $0<s<1$ the equation $$ (-Δ)^s u + V(x)u=Q(x)|u|^{p-2}u \quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\ N\geq 1,$$ where the exponent $p$ is superlinear but subcritical, and $V>0$, $Q\geq 0$ are bounded functions converging to $1$ as $|x|\to\infty$. Using a min-max procedure introduced by Bahri and Li we prove the existence of a positive solution under one-sided asymptotic bounds for $V$ and $Q$.

Serrin's over-determined Problem on Riemannian Manifolds

Let $(\mathcal{M},g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N$, $N\geq 2$. In this paper, we prove that there exists a family of domains $(Ω_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon\in(0,\varepsilon_0)}$ and functions $u_\varepsilon$ such that $ -Δ_{g} u_\varepsilon=1 \quad \textrm{ in } Ω_\varepsilon, \quad u_\varepsilon=0 \quad\textrm{ on }\partialΩ_\varepsilon, \quad {g}(\nabla_{ {g}} {u_\varepsilon}, ν_\varepsilon)=-\frac{\varepsilon}{N} \quad \textrm{ on }\partialΩ_\varepsilon, $ where $ν_\varepsilon$ is the unit outer normal of $\partialΩ_\varepsilon$. The domains $Ω_\varepsilon$ are smooth perturbations of geodesic balls of radius $\varepsilon$ centered at some point $p_0$. If, in addition, $p_0$ is a non-degenerate critical point of the scalar curvature of $g$ then, the family $(\partialΩ_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon\in(0,\varepsilon_0)}$ constitutes a smooth foliation of a neighborhood of $p_0$. By considering a family of domains $Ω_\varepsilon$ in which the above overdetermined system is satisfied, we also prove that if this family converges to some point $p_0$ in a suitable sense as $\varepsilon\to 0$, then $p_0$ is a critical point of the scalar curvature. A Taylor expansion of he energy rigidity for the torsion problem is also given.

Monotonicity and nonexistence results for some fractional elliptic problems in the half space

We study a class of fractional elliptic problems of the form $\Ds u= f(u)$ in the half space $\R^N_+:=\{x \in \R^N\::\: x_1>0\}$ with the complementary Dirichlet condition $u \equiv 0$ in $\R^N \setminus \R^N_+$. Under mild assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we show that bounded positive solutions are increasing in $x_1$. For the special case $f(u)=u^q$, we deduce nonexistence of positive bounded solutions in the case where $q \ge 1$ and $q<\frac{N-1+2s}{N-1-2s}$ if $N \ge 1+2s$. We do not require integrability assumptions on the solutions we study.

Sharp local estimates for the Szegö-Weinberger profile in Riemannian manifolds

We study the local Szegö-Weinberger profile in a geodesic ball $B_g(y_0,r_0)$ centered at a point $y_0$ in a Riemannian manifold $(\M,g)$. This profile is obtained by maximizing the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue $μ_2$ of the Laplace-Beltrami Operator $Δ_g$ on $\M$ among subdomains of $B_g(y_0,r_0)$ with fixed volume. We derive a sharp asymptotic bounds of this profile in terms of the scalar curvature of $\M$ at $y_0$. As a corollary, we deduce a local comparison principle depending only on the scalar curvature. Our study is related to previous results on the profile corresponding to the minimization of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of $Δ_g$, but additional difficulties arise due to the fact that $μ_2$ is degenerate in the unit ball in $\R^N$ and geodesic balls do not yield the optimal lower bound in the asymptotics we obtain.

Unique continuation property and local asymptotics of solutions to fractional elliptic equations

Asymptotics of solutions to fractional elliptic equations with Hardy type potentials is studied in this paper. By using an Almgren type monotonicity formula, separation of variables, and blow-up arguments, we describe the exact behavior near the singularity of solutions to linear and semilinear fractional elliptic equations with a homogeneous singular potential related to the fractional Hardy inequality. As a consequence we obtain unique continuation properties for fractional elliptic equations.

An extension theorem for some pseudo-differential operators

In this paper we provide an extension theorem for fractional powers of some pseudo-differential operators $P(D)$. These extensions yields realization of the fractional powers of some pseudo-differential operators in the spirit of Caffarelli and Silvestre \cite{CSilv}. In particular every fractional power of a local pseudo-differential operator can be realized locally. We also give some properties of the relativistic Schrödinger operator $\Dsm$.

Nonexistence results for a class of fractional elliptic boundary value problems

In this paper we study a class of fractional elliptic problems of the form $$ \Ds u= f(x,u) \quad \textrm{in} Øu=0\quad \textrm{in} \R^N \setminus Ø,$$ where $s\in(0,1)$. We prove nonexistence of positive solutions when $Ø$ is star-shaped and $f$ is supercritical. We also derive a nonexistence result for subcritical $f$ in some unbounded domains. The argument relies on the method of moving spheres applied to a reformulated problem using the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension \cite{CSilv} of a solution of the above problem. The standard approach in the case $s=1$ using Pohozaev type identities does not carry over to the case $0<s<1$ due to the lack of boundary regularity of solutions.
