New estimates for exponential sums over multiplicative subgroups and intervals in prime fields

Let H{\mathcal H} be a multiplicative subgroup of Fp∗\mathbb{F}_p^* of order H>p1/4H>p^{1/4}. We show that max⁡(a,p)=1∣∑x∈H ep(ax)∣≤H1−31/2880+o(1), \max_{(a,p)=1}\left|\sum_{x\in {\mathcal H}} {\mathbf{\,e}}_p(ax)\right| \le H^{1-31/2880+o(1)}, where  ep(z)=exp⁡(2πiz/p){\mathbf{\,e}}_p(z) = \exp(2 πi z/p), which improves a result of Bourgain and Garaev (2009). We also obtain new estimates for double exponential sums with product nxnx with x∈Hx \in {\mathcal H} and n∈Nn \in {\mathcal N} for a short interval N{\mathcal N} of consecutive integers.

On the congruence xx≡λ(modp)x^x\equiv λ\pmod p

In the present paper we obtain several new results related to the problem of upper bound estimates for the number of solutions of the congruence xx≡λ(modp);x∈N,x≤p−1, x^{x}\equiv λ\pmod p;\quad x\in \mathbb{N},\quad x\le p-1, where pp is a large prime number, λλ is an integer corpime to pp. Our arguments are based on recent estimates of trigonometric sums over subgroups due to Shkredov and Shteinikov.

Multiplicative Congruences with Variables from Short Intervals

Recently, several bounds have been obtained on the number of solutions to congruences of the type (x1+s)...(xν+s)≡(y1+s)...(yν+s)≢0(modp) (x_1+s)...(x_ν+s)\equiv (y_1+s)...(y_ν+s)\not\equiv0 \pmod p modulo a prime pp with variables from some short intervals. Here, for almost all pp and all ss and also for a fixed pp and almost all ss, we derive stronger bounds. We also use similar ideas to show that for almost all primes, one can always find an element of a large order in any rather short interval.

Points on curves in small boxes en applications

We introduce several new methods to obtain upper bounds on the number of solutions of the congruences f(x)≡y(modp)f(x) \equiv y \pmod p and f(x)≡y2(modp),f(x) \equiv y^2 \pmod p, with a prime pp and a polynomial ff, where (x,y)(x,y) belongs to an arbitrary square with side length MM. We use these results and methods to derive non-trivial upper bounds for the number of hyperelliptic curves Y2=X2g+1+a2g−1X2g−1+...+a1X+a0Y^2=X^{2g+1} + a_{2g-1}X^{2g-1} +...+ a_1X+a_0 over the finite field $\F_p$ of pp elements, with coefficients in a 2g2g-dimensional cube (a0,...,a2g−1)∈[R0+1,R0+M]×...×[R2g−1+1,R2g−1+M] (a_0,..., a_{2g-1})\in [R_0+1,R_0+M]\times...\times [R_{2g-1}+1,R_{2g-1}+M] that are isomorphic to a given curve and give an almost sharp lower bound on the number of non-isomorphic hyperelliptic curves with coefficients in that cube. Furthermore, we study the size of the smallest box that contain a partial trajectory of a polynomial dynamical system over $\F_p$.

On the Hidden Shifted Power Problem

We consider the problem of recovering a hidden element ss of a finite field $\F_q$ of qq elements from queries to an oracle that for a given $x\in \F_q$ returns (x+s)e(x+s)^e for a given divisor e∣q−1e\mid q-1. We use some techniques from additive combinatorics and analytic number theory that lead to more efficient algorithms than the naive interpolation algorithm, for example, they use substantially fewer queries to the oracle.
