Metric dimension of lexicographic product of some known graphs

For an ordered set W = {w1,w2,...,wk} of vertices and a vertex v in a connected graph G, the ordered k-vector r(v|W) := (d(v,w1),d(v,w2),...,d(v,wk)) is called the (metric) representation of v with respect to W, where d(x,y) is the distance between the vertices x and y. The set W is called a resolving set for G if distinct vertices of G have distinct representations with respect to W. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for G is its metric dimension. In this paper, we investigate the metric dimension of the lexicographic product of graphs G and H, G[H] for some known graphs.

Graphs with constant adjacency dimension

For a set W of vertices and a vertex v in a graph G, the k-vector r2(v|W) = (aG(v,w1),...,aG(v,wk)) is the adjacency representation of v with respect to W, where W = {w1,...,wk} and aG(x,y) is the minimum of 2 and the distance between the vertices x and y. The set W is an adjacency resolving set for G if distinct vertices of G have distinct adjacency representations with respect to W. The minimum cardinality of an adjacency resolving set for G is its adjacency dimension. It is clear that the adjacency dimension of an n-vertex graph G is between 1 and n-1. The graphs with adjacency dimension 1 and n-1 are known. All graphs with adjacency dimension 2, and all n-vertex graphs with adjacency dimension n-2 are studied in this paper. In terms of the diameter and order of G, a sharp upper bound is found for adjacency dimension of G. Also, a sharp lower bound for adjacency dimension of G is obtained in terms of order of G. Using these two bounds, all graphs with adjacency dimension 2, and all n-vertex graphs with adjacency dimension n-2 are characterized.

A characterization of some graphs with metric dimension two

A set W \subseteq V (G) is called a resolving set, if for each pair of distinct vertices u,v \in V (G) there exists t \in W such that d(u,t) \neq d(v,t), where d(x,y) is the distance between vertices x and y. The cardinality of a minimum resolving set for G is called the metric dimension of G and is denoted by dim_M(G). A k-tree is a chordal graph all of whose maximal cliques are the same size k + 1 and all of whose minimal clique separators are also all the same size k. A k-path is a k-tree with maximum degree 2k, where for each integer j, k \leq j < 2k, there exists a unique pair of vertices, u and v, such that deg(u) = deg(v) = j. In this paper, we prove that if G is a k-path, then dim_M(G) = k. Moreover, we provide a characterization of all 2-trees with metric dimension two.

Extremal Graph Theory for Metric Dimension and Girth

A set W⊆V(G)W\subseteq V(G) is called a resolving set for GG, if for each two distinct vertices u,v∈V(G)u,v\in V(G) there exists w∈Ww\in W such that d(u,w)≠d(v,w)d(u,w)\neq d(v,w), where d(x,y)d(x,y) is the distance between the vertices xx and yy. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for GG is called the metric dimension of GG, and denoted by β(G)β(G). In this paper, it is proved that in a connected graph GG of order nn which has a cycle, β(G)≤n−g(G)+2β(G)\leq n-g(G)+2, where g(G)g(G) is the length of a shortest cycle in GG, and the equality holds if and only if GG is a cycle, a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph Ks,tK_{s,t}, s,t≥2 s,t\geq 2.

Uniquely dimensional graphs

A set W⊆V(G)W\subseteq V(G) is called a resolving set, if for each two distinct vertices u,v∈V(G)u,v\in V(G) there exists w∈Ww\in W such that d(u,w)≠d(v,w)d(u,w)\neq d(v,w), where d(x,y)d(x,y) is the distance between the vertices xx and yy. A resolving set for GG with minimum cardinality is called a metric basis. A graph with a unique metric basis is called a uniquely dimensional graph. In this paper, we study some properties of uniquely dimensional graphs.

Characterization of n-Vertex Graphs with Metric Dimension n-3

For an ordered set W={w1,w2,...,wk}W=\{w_1,w_2,...,w_k\} of vertices and a vertex vv in a connected graph GG, the ordered kk-vector r(v∣W):=(d(v,w1),d(v,w2),...,d(v,wk))r(v|W):=(d(v,w_1),d(v,w_2),...,d(v,w_k)) is called the (metric) representation of vv with respect to WW, where d(x,y)d(x,y) is the distance between the vertices xx and yy. The set WW is called a resolving set for GG if distinct vertices of GG have distinct representations with respect to WW. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for GG is its metric dimension. In this paper, we characterize all graphs of order nn with metric dimension n−3n-3.

Characterization of Randomly k-Dimensional Graphs

For an ordered set W={w1,w2,...,wk}W=\{w_1,w_2,...,w_k\} of vertices and a vertex vv in a connected graph GG, the ordered kk-vector r(v∣W):=(d(v,w1),d(v,w2),.,d(v,wk))r(v|W):=(d(v,w_1),d(v,w_2),.,d(v,w_k)) is called the (metric) representation of vv with respect to WW, where d(x,y)d(x,y) is the distance between the vertices xx and yy. The set WW is called a resolving set for GG if distinct vertices of GG have distinct representations with respect to WW. A minimum resolving set for GG is a basis of GG and its cardinality is the metric dimension of GG. The resolving number of a connected graph GG is the minimum kk, such that every kk-set of vertices of GG is a resolving set. A connected graph GG is called randomly kk-dimensional if each kk-set of vertices of GG is a basis. In this paper, along with some properties of randomly kk-dimensional graphs, we prove that a connected graph GG with at least two vertices is randomly kk-dimensional if and only if GG is complete graph Kk+1K_{k+1} or an odd cycle.

The set WW is called a resolving set for GG if distinct vertices of GG have distinct representations with respect to WW. A resolving set for GG with minimum cardinality is called a basis of GG and its cardinality is the metric dimension of GG. A connected graph GG is called randomly kk-dimensional graph if each kk-set of vertices of GG is a basis of GG. In this paper, we study randomly kk-dimensional graphs and provide some properties of these graphs.

Relations between Metric Dimension and Domination Number of Graphs

A set W⊆V(G)W\subseteq V(G) is called a resolving set, if for each two distinct vertices u,v∈V(G)u,v\in V(G) there exists w∈Ww\in W such that d(u,w)≠d(v,w)d(u,w)\neq d(v,w), where d(x,y)d(x,y) is the distance between the vertices xx and yy. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for GG is called the metric dimension of GG, and denoted by β(G)β(G). In this paper, we prove that in a connected graph GG of order nn, β(G)≤n−γ(G)β(G)\leq n-γ(G), where γ(G)γ(G) is the domination number of GG, and the equality holds if and only if GG is a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph Ks,tK_{s,t}, s,t≥2 s,t\geq 2. Then, we obtain new bounds for β(G)β(G) in terms of minimum and maximum degree of GG.

The Metric Dimension of Lexicographic Product of Graphs

In this paper, we study the metric dimension of the lexicographic product of graphs GG and HH, G[H]G[H]. First, we introduce a new parameter which is called adjacency metric dimension of a graph. Then, we obtain the metric dimension of G[H]G[H] in terms of the order of GG and the adjacency metric dimension of HH.
