Graphs represented by Ext

This paper opens and discusses the question originally due to Daniel Herden, who asked for which graph $(μ,R)$ we can find a family $\{\mathbb G_α: α< μ\}$ of abelian groups such that for each $α,β\inμ$: $$Ext(\mathbb G_α, \mathbb G_β) = 0 \Longleftrightarrow(α,β) \in R.$$ In this regard, we present four results. First, we give a connection to Quillen's small object argument which helps $Ext$ vanishes and uses to present useful criteria to the question. Suppose $λ= λ^{\aleph_0}$ and $μ= 2^λ$. We apply Jensen's diamond principle along with the criteria to present $λ$-free abelian groups representing bipartite graphs. Third, we use a version of the black box to construct in ZFC, a family of $\aleph_1$-free abelian groups representing bipartite graphs. Finally, applying forcing techniques, we present a consistent positive answer for general graphs.

A note on Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity

In this note we first give a new bound on $e_{HK}(\sim)$ the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of invariant rings, by the help of the Noether's bound. Then, we simplify, extend and present applications of the reciprocity formulae due to L. Smith. He proved the formula over polynomial rings and his result is tight in the following sense: Over complete intersection rings with isolated singularity we show that the reciprocity formulae "$e_{HK}(R/I)+ e_{HK}(R/J) = e_{HK}(R/\underline{f})$" is equivalent with $\pd(I)<\infty$ when $I$ is an $\fm$-primary unmixed ideal linked to $J$ along with a regular sequence $\underline{f}$.

On the (LC) conjecture

We prove the (LC) conjecture of Hochster and Huneke in some non-trivial cases. This has several applications. Recently, Brenner and Caminata answered a numerical evidence due to Dao and Smirnov on the shape of generalized Hilbert-Kunz functions of smooth curves. As applications, we first reprove this by a short argument. Then we give a proof of second numerical evidence predicted by Dao and Smirnov on the shape of generalized Hilbert-Kunz functions of nodal curves. Thirdly, we answer a question posted by Vraciu on the (LC) property of a proposed ring. Inspiring with the (LC) property, we present a connection to the stability theory. This leads us to investigate the stability and the strong semistability of the sheaf of relations on $\{x^2,y^2,z^2\}$ over the Klein's quartic curve. This answers questions of Brenner. After presenting a connection from (LC) to the $F$-threshold, we answer a question posted by Huneke et al. Additional applications and examples are given.

Direct summands of infinite-dimensional polynomial rings

Let k be a field and R a pure subring of the infinite-dimensional polynomial ring k[X1;...]. If R is generated by monomials, then we show that the equality of height and grade holds for all ideals of R. Also, we show R satisfies the weak Bourbaki unmixed property. As an application, we give the Cohen-Macaulay property of the invariant ring of the action of a linearly reductive group acting by k-automorphism on k[X1;...]. This provides several examples of non-Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay rings (e.g. Veronese, determinantal and Grassmanian rings).

Cohen-Macaulayness of non-affine normal semigroups

In this paper, we study the Cohen-Macaulayness of non-affine normal semigroups in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. We do this by establishing the following four statements each of independent interest: 1) a Lazard type result on $I$-supported elements of $\prod_{\mathbb{N}}\mathbb{Q}_{\geq0}$ for an index set $I\subset\mathbb{N}$; 2) a criterion of regularity of sequences of elements of the ring via projective dimension; 3) a direct limit of polynomial rings with toric maps; 4) any direct summand of rings of the third item is Cohen-Macaulay. To illustrate the idea, we give many examples.

Almost Cohen-Macaulay and almost regular algebras via almost flat extensions

The present paper deals with various aspects of the notion of almost Cohen-Macaulay property, which was introduced and studied by Roberts, Singh and Srinivas. We employ the definition of almost zero modules as defined by a value map, which is different from the version of Gabber-Ramero. We prove that, if the local cohomology modules of an algebra $T$ of certain type over a local Noetherian ring are almost zero, $T$ maps to a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Then we study how the almost Cohen-Macaulay property behaves under almost faithfully flat extension. As a consequence, we study the structure of $F$-coherent rings of positive characteristic in terms of almost regularity.

Homological properties of the perfect and absolute integral closures of Noetherian domains

For a Noetherian local domain $R$ let $R^+$ be the absolute integral closure of $R$ and let $R_{\infty}$ be the perfect closure of $R$, when $R$ has prime characteristic. In this paper we investigate the projective dimension of residue rings of certain ideals of $R^+$ and $R_{\infty}$. In particular, we show that any prime ideal of $R_{\infty}$ has a bounded free resolution of countably generated free $R_{\infty}$-modules. Also, we show that the analogue of this result is true for the maximal ideals of $R^+$, when $R$ has residue prime characteristic. We compute global dimensions of $R^+$ and $R_{\infty}$ in some cases. Some applications of these results are given.

A unified approach to formal local cohomology and local Tate cohomology

Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce a theory of formal local cohomology for complexes of R-modules. As an application, we establish some relations between formal local cohomology, local homology, local cohomology and local Tate cohomology through some natural isomorphisms. We investigate vanishing of formal local cohomology modules. Also, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.

Finiteness properties of formal local cohomology modules and Cohen-Macaulayness

Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R,\fm)$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. We investigate the structure of the formal local cohomology modules ${\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)$, $i\geq 0$. We prove several results concerning finiteness properties of formal local cohomology modules which indicate that these modules behave very similar to local cohomology modules. Among other things, we prove that if $\dim R\leq 2$ or either $\fa$ is principal or $\dim R/\fa\leq 1$, then $\Tor_j^R(R/\fa,{\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M))$ is Artinian for all $i$ and $j$. Also, we examine the notion $\fgrade(\fa,M)$, the formal grade of $M$ with respect to $\fa$ (i.e. the least integer $i$ such that ${\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M) \neq 0$). As applications, we establish a criterion for Cohen-Macaulayness of $M$, and also we provide an upper bound for cohomological dimension of $M$ with respect to $\fa$.

On the formal grade of finitely generated modules over local rings

Let \fa be an ideal of a local ring (R,\fm) and M a finitely generated R-module. This paper concerns the notion \fgrade(\fa,M), the formal grade of M with respect to \fa (i.e. the least integer i such that {\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)\neq 0). We show that \fgrade(\fa,M)\geq \depth M-\cd_{\fa}(M), and as a result, we establish a new characterization of Cohen-Macaulay modules. As an application of this characterization, we show that if M is Cohen-Macaulay and L a pure submodule of M with the same support as M, then \fgrade(\fa,L)=\fgrade(\fa,M). Also, we give a generalization of the Hochster-Eagon result on Cohen-Macaulayness of invariant rings.
