Characterizing certain semidualizing complexes via their Betti and Bass numbers

It is known that the numerical invariants Betti numbers and Bass numbers are worthwhile tools for decoding a large amount of information about modules over commutative rings. We highlight this fact, further, by establishing some criteria for certain semidualizing complexes via their Betti and Bass numbers. Two distinguished types of semidualizing complexes are the shifts of the underlying rings and dualizing complexes. Let $C$ be a semidualizing complex for an analytically irreducible local ring $R$ and set $n:=\sup C$ and $d:=\dim_RC$. We show that $C$ is quasi-isomorphic to a shift of $R$ if and only if the $n$th Betti number of $C$ is one. Also, we show that $C$ is a dualizing complex for $R$ if and only if the $d$th Bass number of $C$ is one.

The balance of relative Ext groups defined by semi dualizing modules

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity and $C$ a semidualizing module for $R$. Let $\mathscr{P}_C(R)$ and $\mathscr{I}_C (R)$ denote, respectively, the classes of $C$-projective and $C$-injective $R$-modules. We show that their induced Ext bifunctors $\text{Ext}^i_{\mathscr{P}_C}(-,\sim)$ and $\text{Ext}^i_{\mathscr{I}_C}(-,\sim)$ coincide for all $i\geq 0$ if and only if $C$ is projective. Also, we provide some other criteria for $C$ to be projective by using some special cotorsion theories.

Filter-regular sequences, almost complete intersections and Stanley's conjecture

Let $K$ be a field and $I$ a monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,..., x_n]$ generated by monomials $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$. We show that $S/I$ is pretty clean if either: 1) $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$ is a filter-regular sequence, 2) $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$ is a $d$-sequence; or 3) $I$ is almost complete intersection. In particular, in each of these cases, $S/I$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and both Stanley's and $h$-regularity conjectures, on Stanley decompositions, hold for $S/I$. Also, we prove that if $I$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a locally complete intersection simplicial complex on $[n]$, then Stanley's conjecture holds for $S/I$.

The Existence of Relative pure Injective Envelopes

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a class of finitely presented $R$-modules such that $R\in \mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{S}$ has a subset $\mathcal{S}^*,$ with the property that for any $U\in \mathcal{S}$ there is a $U^*\in \mathcal{S}^*$ with $U^*\cong U.$ We show that the class of $\mathcal{S}$-pure injective $R$-modules is preenveloping. As an application, we deduce that the left global $\mathcal{S}$-pure projective dimension of $R$ is equal to its left global $\mathcal{S}$-pure injective dimension. As our main result, we prove that, in fact, the class of $\mathcal{S}$-pure injective $R$-modules is enveloping.

Foxby equivalence, local duality and Gorenstein homological dimensions

Let $(R,\fm)$ be a local ring and $(-)^{\vee}$ denote the Matlis duality functor. We investigate the relationship between Foxby equivalence and local duality through generalized local cohomology modules. Assume that $R$ possesses a normalized dualizing complex $D$ and $X$ and $Y$ are two homologically bounded complexes of $R$-modules with finitely generated homology modules. We present several duality results for $\fm$-section complex ${\bf R}Γ_{\fm}({\bf R}\Hom_R(X,Y))$. In particular, if G-dimension of $X$ and injective dimension of $Y$ are finite, then we show that $${\bf R}Γ_{\fm}({\bf R}\Hom_R(X,Y))\simeq ({\bf R}\Hom_R(Y,D\otimes_ R^{\bf L}X))^{\vee}.$$ We deduce several applications of these duality results. In particular, we establish Grothendieck's non-vanishing Theorem in the context of generalized local cohomology modules.

Local homology and Gorenstein flat modules

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ and $\mathcal{D}(R)$ denote the derived category of $R$-modules. We investigate the theory of local homology in conjunction with Gorenstein flat modules. Let $X$ be a homologically bounded to the right complex and $Q$ a bounded to the right complex of Gorenstein flat $R$-modules such that $Q$ and $X$ are isomorphic in $\mathcal{D}(R)$. We establish a natural isomorphism ${\bf L}Λ^{\fa}(X)\simeq Λ^{\fa}(Q)$ in $\mathcal{D}(R)$ which immediately asserts that $\sup {\bf L}Λ^{\fa}(X)\leq \Gfd_RX$. This isomorphism yields several consequences. For instance, in the case $R$ possesses a dualizing complex, we show that $\Gfd_R {\bf L}Λ^{\fa}(X)\leq \Gfd_RX$. Also, we establish a criterion for regularity of Gorenstein local rings.

A unified approach to formal local cohomology and local Tate cohomology

Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce a theory of formal local cohomology for complexes of R-modules. As an application, we establish some relations between formal local cohomology, local homology, local cohomology and local Tate cohomology through some natural isomorphisms. We investigate vanishing of formal local cohomology modules. Also, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.

Finiteness properties of formal local cohomology modules and Cohen-Macaulayness

Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R,\fm)$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. We investigate the structure of the formal local cohomology modules ${\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)$, $i\geq 0$. We prove several results concerning finiteness properties of formal local cohomology modules which indicate that these modules behave very similar to local cohomology modules. Among other things, we prove that if $\dim R\leq 2$ or either $\fa$ is principal or $\dim R/\fa\leq 1$, then $\Tor_j^R(R/\fa,{\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M))$ is Artinian for all $i$ and $j$. Also, we examine the notion $\fgrade(\fa,M)$, the formal grade of $M$ with respect to $\fa$ (i.e. the least integer $i$ such that ${\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M) \neq 0$). As applications, we establish a criterion for Cohen-Macaulayness of $M$, and also we provide an upper bound for cohomological dimension of $M$ with respect to $\fa$.

Generalized local cohomology modules and homological Gorenstein dimensions

Let \fa be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R and M and N two finitely generated R-modules. Let \cd_{\fa}(M,N) denote the supremum of the i's such that H^i_{\fa}(M,N)\neq 0. First, by using the theory of Gorenstein homological dimensions, we obtain several upper bounds for \cd_{\fa}(M,N). Next, over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring (R,\fm), we show that \cd_{\fm}(M,N)=\dim R-\grade(\Ann_RN,M), provided that either projective dimension of M or injective dimension of N is finite. Finally, over such rings, we establish an analogue of the Hartshorne-Lichtenbaum Vanishing Theorem in the context of generalized local cohomology modules.

On the formal grade of finitely generated modules over local rings

Let \fa be an ideal of a local ring (R,\fm) and M a finitely generated R-module. This paper concerns the notion \fgrade(\fa,M), the formal grade of M with respect to \fa (i.e. the least integer i such that {\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)\neq 0). We show that \fgrade(\fa,M)\geq \depth M-\cd_{\fa}(M), and as a result, we establish a new characterization of Cohen-Macaulay modules. As an application of this characterization, we show that if M is Cohen-Macaulay and L a pure submodule of M with the same support as M, then \fgrade(\fa,L)=\fgrade(\fa,M). Also, we give a generalization of the Hochster-Eagon result on Cohen-Macaulayness of invariant rings.

Associated primes of local cohomology modules of weakly Laskerian modules

The notion of weakly Laskerian modules was introduced recently by the authors. Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $M$ a weakly Laskerian module. It is shown that if $\fa$ is principal, then the set of associated primes of the local cohomology module $H_{\fa}^i(M)$ is finite for all $i\geq 0$. We also prove that when $R$ is local, then $\Ass_R(H_{\fa}^i(M))$ is finite for all $i\geq 0$ in the following cases: (1) $\dim R\leq 3$, (2) $\dim R/\fa\leq 1$, (3) $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay and for any ideal $\fb$, with $l=\grade(\fb,M)$, $\Hom_R(R/\fb,H_{\fb}^{l+1}(M))$ is weakly Laskerian.

Associated primes of local cohomology module

Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Let $t$ be a natural integer. It is shown that there is a finite subset $X$ of $\Spec R$, such that $\Ass_R(H_{\fa}^t(M))$ is contained in $X$ union with the union of the sets $\Ass_R(\Ext_R^j(R/\fa,H_{\fa}^i(M)))$, where $0\leq i<t$ and $0\leq j\leq t^2+1$. As an immediate consequence, we deduce that the first non $\fa$-cofinite local cohomology module of $M$ with respect to $\fa$ has only finitely many associated prime ideals.
