Rational torsion on hyperelliptic jacobian varieties

It was conjectured by Flynn that there exists a constant $κ$ such that, for any integer $g \ge 2$, any $m \le κg$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over $\mathbb Q$ with a rational $m$-torsion point on its Jacobian. Leprévost proved this conjecture with $κ=3$. In this work we prove that given an integer $N$ in the interval $[3g,4g+1]$, $g\ge 3$, satisfying certain partition conditions, there exist parametric families of hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties with a rational torsion point of order $N$. In particular, we establish the existence of such varieties for $N=4g+1$ when $g$ is odd and for $N=4g-1$ when $g$ is even. A few explicit applications of this result produce the first known infinite examples of torsion $13$ when $g=3$, torsion $15$ when $g=4$, and torsion $17,18,21$ when $g=5$. In fact, we show that infinitely many of the latter abelian varieties are absolutely simple.

Divisibility by 2 on quartic models of elliptic curves and rational Diophantine $D(q)$-quintuples

Let $C$ be a smooth genus one curve described by a quartic polynomial equation over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ with $P\in C(\mathbb Q)$. We give an explicit criterion for the divisibility-by-$2$ of a rational point on the elliptic curve $(C,P)$. This provides an analogue to the classical criterion of the divisibility-by-$2$ on elliptic curves described by Weierstrass equations. We employ this criterion to investigate the question of extending a rational $D(q)$-quadruple to a quintuple. We give concrete examples to which we can give an affirmative answer. One of these results implies that although the rational $ D(16t+9) $-quadruple $\{t, 16t+8,2 25t+14, 36t+20 \}$ can not be extended to a polynomial $ D(16t+9) $-quintuple using a linear polynomial, there are infinitely many rational values of $t$ for which the aforementioned rational $ D(16t+9) $-quadruple can be extended to a rational $ D(16t+9) $-quintuple. Moreover, these infinitely many values of $t$ are parametrized by the rational points on a certain elliptic curve of positive Mordell-Weil rank.

Moments of Gaussian hypergeometric functions over finite fields

We prove explicit formulas for certain first and second moment sums of families of Gaussian hypergeometric functions $_{n+1}F_n$, $n\ge1$, over finite fields with $q$ elements where $q$ is an odd prime. This enables us to find an estimate for the value $_6F_5(1)$. In addition, we evaluate certain second moments of traces of the family of Clausen elliptic curves in terms of the value $_3F_2(-1)$. These formulas also allow us to express the product of certain $_2F_1$ and $_{n+1}F_n$ functions in terms of finite field Appell series which generalizes current formulas for products of $_2F_1$ functions. We finally give closed form expressions for sums of Gaussian hypergeometric functions defined using different multiplicative characters.

Rational points on quadratic elliptic surfaces

We consider elliptic surfaces whose coefficients are degree $2$ polynomials in a variable $T$. It was recently shown that for infinitely many rational values of $T$ the resulting elliptic curves have rank at least $1$. In this article, we prove that the Mordell-Weil rank of each such elliptic surface is at most $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. In fact, we show that the Mordell-Weil rank of these elliptic surfaces is controlled by the number of zeros of a certain polynomial over $\mathbb Q$.

Simultaneous Rational Periodic Points of Degree-2 Rational Maps

Let $S$ be the collection of quadratic polynomial maps, and degree $2$-rational maps whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to $C_2$ defined over the rational field. Assuming standard conjectures of Poonen and Manes on the period length of a periodic point under the action of a map in $S$, we give a complete description of triples $(f_1,f_2,p)$ such that $p$ is a rational periodic point for both $f_i\in S$, $i=1,2$. We also show that no more than three quadratic polynomial maps can possess a common periodic point over the rational field. In addition, under these hypotheses we show that two nonzero rational numbers $a, b $ are periodic points of the map $ϕ_{t_1,t_2}(z)=t_1 z + t_2/z$ for infinitely many nonzero rational pairs $(t_1, t_2)$ if and only if $a^2 = b^2$.

Counting elliptic curves with bad reduction over a prescribed set of primes

Let $p\ge5$ be a prime and $T$ a Kodaira type of the special fiber of an elliptic curve. We estimate the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ up to height $X$ with Kodaira type $T$ at $p$. This enables us find the proportion of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$, when ordered by height, with Kodaira type $T$ at a prime $p\ge5$ inside the set of all elliptic curves. This proportion is a rational function in $p$. For instance, we show that $\displaystyle\frac{p^8(p-1)}{p^9-1}$ of all elliptic curves with bad reduction at $p$ are of multiplicative reduction. Furthermore, we prove that the prime-to-$6$ part of the conductors of a majority ($=ζ(10)/ζ(2)\approx 0.6$) of elliptic curves are squarefree, where $ζ$ is the Riemann-zeta function.

Rational sequences on different models of elliptic curves

Given a set $S$ of elements in a number field $k$, we discuss the existence of planar algebraic curves over $k$ which possess rational points whose $x$-coordinates are exactly the elements of $S$. If the size $|S|$ of $S$ is either $4,5$, or $6$, we exhibit infinite families of (twisted) Edwards curves and (general) Huff curves for which the elements of $S$ are realized as the $x$-coordinates of rational points on these curves. This generalizes earlier work on progressions of certain types on some algebraic curves.

Evaluation of Gaussian hypergeometric series using Huff's models of elliptic curves

A Huff curve over a field $K$ is an elliptic curve defined by the equation $ax(y^2-1)=by(x^2-1)$ where $a,b\in K$ are such that $a^2\ne b^2$. In a similar fashion, a general Huff curve over $K$ is described by the equation $x(ay^2-1)=y(bx^2-1)$ where $a,b\in K$ are such that $ab(a-b)\ne 0$. In this note we express the number of rational points on these curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series $\displaystyle {_2F_1}(λ):={_2F_1}\left(\begin{matrix} ϕ&ϕ& ε\end{matrix}\Big| λ\right)$ where $ϕ$ and $ε$ are the quadratic and trivial characters over $\mathbb{F}_q$, respectively. Consequently, we exhibit the number of rational points on the elliptic curves $y^2=x(x+a)(x+b)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of ${_2F_1}(λ)$. This generalizes earlier known formulas for Legendre, Clausen and Edwards curves. Furthermore, using these expressions we display several transformations of ${_2F_1}$. Finally, we present the exact value of $_2F_1(λ)$ for different $λ$'s over a prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$ extending previous results of Greene and Ono.

On dependence of rational points on elliptic curves

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$. Let $Γ$ be a subgroup of $E(\mathbb Q)$ and $P\in E(\mathbb Q)$. In [1], it was proved that if $E$ has no nontrivial rational torsion points, then $P\inΓ$ if and only if $P\in Γ$ mod $p$ for finitely many primes $p$. In this note, assuming the General Riemann Hypothesis, we provide an explicit upper bound on these primes when $E$ does not have complex multiplication and either $E$ is a semistable curve or $E$ has no exceptional prime.

On geometric progressions on hyperelliptic curves

Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve over $\mathbb Q$ described by $y^2=a_0x^n+a_1x^{n-1}+\ldots+a_n$, $a_i\in\mathbb Q$. The points $P_{i}=(x_{i},y_{i})\in C(\mathbb{Q})$, $i=1,2,...,k,$ are said to be in a geometric progression of length $k$ if the rational numbers $x_{i}$, $i=1,2,...,k,$ form a geometric progression sequence in $\mathbb Q$, i.e., $x_i=pt^{i}$ for some $p,t\in\mathbb Q$. In this paper we prove the existence of an infinite family of hyperelliptic curves on which there is a sequence of rational points in a geometric progression of length at least eight.

Character Sums, Gaussian Hypergeometric Series, and a Family of Hyperelliptic Curves

We study the character sums \[ϕ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left(x(x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right),\textrm{ and, } ψ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left((x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right)\] where $ϕ$ is the quadratic character defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. These sums are expressed in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Then we use these expressions to exhibit the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on families of hyperelliptic curves and their Jacobian varieties.

Edwards Curves and Gaussian Hypergeometric Series

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve described by either an Edwards model or a twisted Edwards model over $\mathbb{F}_p$, namely, $E$ is defined by one of the following equations $x^2+y^2=a^2(1+x^2y^2),\, a^5-a\not\equiv 0$ mod $p$, or, $ax^2+y^2=1+dx^2y^2,\,ad(a-d)\not\equiv0$ mod $p$, respectively. We express the number of rational points of $E$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ using the Gaussian hypergeometric series $\displaystyle {_2F_1}\left(\begin{matrix} ϕ&ϕ {} & ε \end{matrix}\Big| x\right)$ where $ε$ and $ϕ$ are the trivial and quadratic characters over $\mathbb{F}_p$ respectively. This enables us to evaluate $|E(\mathbb{F}_p)|$ for some elliptic curves $E$, and prove the existence of isogenies between $E$ and Legendre elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$.

Periodic continued fractions and elliptic curves over quadratic fields

Let $f(x)$ be a square free quartic polynomial defined over a quadratic field $K$ such that its leading coefficient is a square. If the continued fraction expansion of $\displaystyle \sqrt{f(x)}$ is periodic, then its period $n$ lies in the set \[\{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,17,18,22,26,30,34\}.\] We write explicitly all such polynomials for which the period $n$ occurs over $K$ but not over $\Q$ and $\displaystyle n\not\in\{ 13,15,17\}$. Moreover we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such continued fraction expansions with period $13, 15$ or $17$ over $K$.

Partitions with equal products and elliptic curves

Let $a,b,c$ be distinct positive integers. Set $M=a+b+c$ and $N=abc$. We give an explicit description of the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic curve $\displaystyle E_{(M,N)}:y^2-Mxy-Ny=x^3$ over $\Q$. In particular we determine the torsion subgroup of $E_{(M,N)}(\Q)$ and show that its rank is positive. Furthermore there are infinitely many positive integers $M$ that can be written in $n$ different ways, $n\in\{2,3\}$, as the sum of three distinct positive integers with the same product $N$ and $E_{(M,N)}(\Q)$ has rank at least $n$.

On Quadratic Twists of Hyperelliptic Curves

Let C be a hyperelliptic curve of good reduction defined over a discrete valuation field K with algebraically closed residue field k. Assume moreover that char k \ne 2. Given d \in K^*\K^*2, we introduce an explicit description of the minimal regular model of the quadratic twist of C by d. As an application, we show that if C/Q is a nonsingular hyperelliptic curve given by y^2 = f(x) with f an irreducible polynomial, there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C which are not everywhere locally soluble.

Visualizing elements of order four in the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve

Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K. Let h be an element of order 4 in the Shafarevich-Tate group of E. We prove that h is visible in infinitely many abelian surfaces up to isomorphism. This is to say that there are infinitely many abelian surfaces J such that E\hookrightarrow J and h lies in the kernel of the natural map H^1(K,E)\rightarrow H^1(K,J).

Counting Models of Genus One Curves

Let C be a soluble smooth genus one curve over a Henselian discrete valuation field. There is a unique minimal Weierstrass equation defining C up to isomorphism. In this paper we consider genus one equations of degree n defining C, namely a (generalised) binary quartic when n = 2, a ternary cubic when n = 3, and a pair of quaternary quadrics when n = 4. In general, minimal genus one equations of degree n are not unique up to isomorphism. We explain how the number of minimal genus one equations of degree n varies according to the Kodaira symbol of the Jacobian of C. Then we count these equations up to isomorphism over a number field of class number 1.

Minimal Genus One Curves

In this paper we consider genus one equations of degree n, namely a (generalised) binary quartic when n = 2, a ternary cubic when n = 3, and a pair of quaternary quadrics when n = 4. A new definition for the minimality of genus one equations of degree n is introduced. The advantage of this definition is that it does not depend on invariant theory of genus one curves. We prove that this definition coincides with the classical definition of minimality when n <= 4. As an application, we give a new proof for the existence of global minimal genus one equations over number fields of class number 1.
