On elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine quadruples

In this paper, we consider elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine quadruples, i.e. sets of four nonzero rationals such that the product of any two of them plus 1 is a perfect square. We show that for each of the groups $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ for $k = 2, 4, 6, 8$, there are infinitely many rational Diophantine quadruples with the property that the induced elliptic curve has this torsion group. We also construct curves with moderately large rank in each of these four cases.

Rational Diophantine sextuples containing two regular quadruples and one regular quintuple

A set of $m$ distinct nonzero rationals $\{a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j+1$ is a perfect square for all $1\leq i<j\leq m$, is called a rational Diophantine $m$-tuple. It is proved recently that there are infinitely many rational Diophantine sextuples. In this paper, we construct infinite families of rational Diophantine sextuples with special structure, namely the sextuples containing quadruples and quintuples of certain type.

Diophantine m-tuples in finite fields and modular forms

For a prime p, a Diophantine m-tuple in $\mathbb{F}_p$ is a set of m nonzero elements of $\mathbb{F}_p$ with the property that the product of any two of its distinct elements is one less than a square. In this paper, we present formulas for the number $N^{(m)}(p)$ of Diophantine m-tuples in $\mathbb{F}_p$ for m=2,3 and 4. Fourier coefficients of certain modular forms appear in the formula for the number of Diophantine quadruples. We prove that asymptotically $N^{(m)}(p)=\frac{1}{2^{m \choose 2 }}\frac{p^m}{m!} + o(p^m)$, and also show that if $p>2^{2m-2}m^2$, then there is at least one Diophantine m-tuple in $\mathbb{F}_p$.

Elliptic curves induced by Diophantine triples

Given a Diophantine triple $\{c_1(t),c_2(t),c_3(t)\}$, the elliptic curve over Q(t) induced by this triple, i.e. $y^2=(c_1(t) x+1) (c_2(t) x+1) (c_3(t) x+1)$, can have as torsion group one of the non-cyclic groups in Mazur's theorem, i.e. Z/2Z x Z/2Z, Z/2Z x Z/4Z, Z/2Z x Z/6Z or Z/2Z x Z/8Z. In this paper we present results concerning the rank over Q(t) of these curves improving in some of the cases the previously known results.

A Pellian equation with primes and applications to D(-1)-quadruples

In this paper, we prove that the equation $x^2-(p^{2k+2}+1)y^2=-p^{2l+1}$, $l \in \{0,1,\dots,k\}, k \geq 0$, where $p$ is an odd prime number, is not solvable in positive integers $x$ and $y$. By combining that result with other known results on the existence of Diophantine quadruples, we are able to prove results on the extensibility of some $D(-1)$-pairs to quadruples in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-t}], t>0$.

On the high rank $π/3$ and $2π/3$-congruent number elliptic curves

Consider the elliptic curves given by $ E_{n,θ}:\quad y^2=x^3+2s n x^2-(r^2-s^2) n^2 x $ where $0 < θ< π$, $\cos(θ)=s/r$ is rational with $0\leq |s| <r$ and $\gcd (r,s)=1$. These elliptic curves are related to the $θ$-congruent number problem as a generalization of the congruent number problem. For fixed $θ$ this family corresponds to the quadratic twist by $n$ of the curve $E_θ: \,\, y^2=x^3+2s x^2-(r^2-s^2) x.$ We study two special cases $θ=π/3$ and $θ=2π/3$. We have found a subfamily of $n=n(w)$ having rank at least $3$ over ${\mathbb Q}(w)$ and a subfamily with rank $4$ parametrized by points of an elliptic curve with positive rank. We also found examples of $n$ such that $E_{n, θ}$ has rank up to $7$ over $\mathbb Q$ in both cases.

Elliptic curves with torsion group Z/8Z or Z/2Z x Z/6Z

We show the existence of families of elliptic curves over Q whose generic rank is at least 2 for the torsion groups Z/8Z and Z/2Z x Z/6Z. Also in both cases we prove the existence of infinitely many elliptic curves, which are parameterized by the points of an elliptic curve with positive rank, with such torsion group and rank at least 3. These results represent an improvement of previous results by Campbell, Kulesz, Lecacheux, Dujella and Rabarison where families with rank at least 1 were constructed in both cases.

High rank elliptic curves with prescribed torsion group over quadratic fields

There are 26 possibilities for the torsion group of elliptic curves defined over quadratic number fields. We present examples of high rank elliptic curves with given torsion group which give the current records for most of the torsion groups. In particular, we show that for each possible torsion group, except maybe for Z/15Z, there exist an elliptic curve over some quadratic field with this torsion group and with rank >= 2.

Ranks of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion over number fields

We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields of degree 2, 3, and 4. We show that if $T$ is a group, then either the class of all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with torsion subgroup $T$ is empty, or it contains curves of rank~0 as well as curves of positive rank. We prove a similar but slightly weaker result for cubic and quartic fields. On the other hand, we find a group $T$ and a quartic field $K$ such that among the elliptic curves over $K$ with torsion subgroup $T$, there are curves of positive rank, but none of rank~0. We find examples of elliptic curves with positive rank and given torsion in many previously unknown cases. We also prove that all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a point of order 13 or 18 and all elliptic curves over quartic fields with a point of order 22 are isogenous to one of their Galois conjugates and, by a phenomenon that we call \emph{false complex multiplication}, have even rank. Finally, we discuss connections with elliptic curves over finite fields and applications to integer factorization.
