Background independence of effective actions at critical dimension

Recently, by explicit calculations at orders $α',α'^2,α'^3$, it has been observed that the effective action of string theory at the critical dimension is independent of the background for the closed spacetime manifolds. In this paper we speculate that for the open spacetime manifolds, the effective action is even independent of the character of the boundary, \ie the boundary couplings for timelike and spacelike boundaries are the same. We support this proposal by calculating the boundary couplings in the bosonic string theory at order $α'$ for the spacelike boundary and show that they are the same as the couplings for the timelike boundary that have been recently found.

Higher-derivative field redefinitions in the presence of boundary

Recently it has been proposed that the consistency with T-duality requires the effective action of string theory at order $α'^n$ satisfies the least action principle provided that the values of the massless fields and their derivatives up to order $n$ are known on the boundary. In this paper we speculate that this boundary condition constrains the field redefinitions and the corrections to the T-duality transformations in the presence of boundary, \eg at order $α'$, the metric does not change, and all other massless fields should change to include only the first derivative of the massless fields. Using the above field redefinitions, we write all gauge invariant bulk and boundary couplings in the bosonic string theory at order $α'$ in a minimal scheme. Then using the assumption that the classical effective action of the string theory at the critical dimension is background independent, we fix the coefficients of the independent gauge invariant couplings by imposing $O(1,1)$ symmetry when the background has a circle and by imposing $O(d,d)$ symmetry when the background has $T^d$. These constraints fix the bulk action up to an overall factor, and the boundary action up to two parameters. By requiring the gravity couplings in the boundary action to be consistent with those in the Chern-Simons gravity, the two boundary parameters are also fixed. Up to the above restricted field redefinitions, the bulk and boundary couplings are exactly those in the K.A. Meissner action and its corresponding boundary action.

Minimal gauge invariant couplings at order $\ell_p^6$ in M-theory

Removing the field redefinitions, the Bianchi identities and the total derivative freedoms from the general form of the gauge invariant couplings at order $\ell_p^6$ for the bosonic fields of M-theory, we have found that the minimum number of independent couplings in the structures with even number of the three-form, is 1062. We find that there are schemes in which there is no coupling involving $R,\,R_{μν},\,\nabla_μF^{μαβγ}$. In these schemes, there are sub-schemes in which, except one coupling which has the second derivative of $F^{(4)}$, the couplings can have no term with more than two derivatives. We find some of the parameters by dimensionally reducing the couplings on a circle and comparing them with the known couplings of the one-loop effective action of type IIA superstring theory. In particular, we find the coupling which has term with more than two derivatives is zero.

Effective action of string theory at order $α'$ in the presence of boundary

Recently, using the assumption that the string theory effective action at the critical dimension is background independent, the classical on-shell effective action of the bosonic string theory at order $α'$ in a spacetime manifold without boundary has been reproduced, up to an overall parameter, by imposing the $O(1,1)$ symmetry when the background has a circle. In the presence of the boundary, we consider a background which has boundary and a circle such that the unit normal vector of the boundary is independent of the circle. Then the $O(1,1)$ symmetry can fix the bulk action without using the lowest order equation of motion. Moreover, the above constraints and the constraint from the principle of the least action in the presence of boundary can fix the boundary action, up to five boundary parameters. In the least action principle, we assume that not only the values of the massless fields but also the values of their first derivatives are arbitrary on the boundary. We have also observed that the cosmological/one-dimensional reduction of the leading order action in the presence of the Hawking-Gibbons boundary term, produces zero boundary action. Imposing this as another constraint on the boundary couplings at order $α'$, we find the boundary action up to two parameters. For a specific value for these two parameters, the gravity couplings in the boundary become the Chern-Simons gravity plus another term which has the Laplacian of the extrinsic curvature.

Effective action of bosonic string theory at order $ α'^2 $

Recently, it has been shown that the gauge invariance requires the minimum number of independent couplings for $B$-field, metric and dilaton at order $α'^2$ to be 60. In this paper we fix the corresponding 60 parameters in string theory by requiring the couplings to be invariant under the global T-duality transformations. The Riemann cubed terms are exactly the same as the couplings that have been found by the S-matrix calculations.

O-plane couplings at order $α'^2$: one R-R field strength

It is known that the anomalous Chern-Simons (CS) coupling of O$_p$-plane is not consistent with the T-duality transformations. Compatibility of this coupling with the T-duality requires the inclusion of couplings involving one R-R field strength. In this paper we find such couplings at order $α'^2$. By requiring the R-R and NS-NS gauge invariances, we first find all independent couplings at order $α'^2$. There are $1,\, 6,\,28,\,20,\, 19,\, 2$ couplings corresponding to the R-R field strengths $F^{(p-4)}$, $\,F^{(p-2)}$, $\,F^{(p)}$, $\,F^{(p+2)}$, $\,F^{(p+4)}$ and $F^{(p+6)}$, respectively. We then impose the T-duality constraint on these couplings and on the CS coupling $C^{(p-3)}\wedge R\wedge R$ at order $α'^2$ to fix their corresponding coefficients. The T-duality constraint fixes all coefficients in terms of the CS coefficient. They are fully consistent with the partial couplings that have been already found in the literature by the S-matrix method.

Surface terms in the effective actions via duality constraints

The effective action of string theory on a spacetime manifold with boundary has both bulk and boundary terms. We propose that both bulk and boundary actions, may be found by imposing the effective action to be invariant under the gauge transformations and under the string dualities. Using this proposal at the leading order of $α'$, the standard Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term is reproduced.

Higher derivative corrections to WZ action: One RR, one NSNS and one NS couplings

In the first part of this paper, we calculate the disk-level S-matrix elements of one RR, one NSNS and one NS vertex operators, and show that they are consistent with the amplitudes that have been recently found by applying various Ward identities. We show that the massless poles of the amplitude at low energy are fully consistent with the known D-brane couplings at order $α'^2$ which involve one RR or NSNS and two NS fields. Subtracting the massless poles, we then find the contact terms of one RR, one NSNS and one NS fields at order $α'^2$. Some of these terms are reproduced by the Taylor expansion and the pull-back of two closed string couplings, some other couplings are reproduced by linear graviton in the second fundamental form and by the B-field in the gauge field extension $F\rightarrow F+B$, in one closed and two open string couplings. In the second part, we write all independent covariant contractions of one RR, one NSNS and one NS fields with unknown coefficients. We then constrain the couplings to be consistent with the linear T-duality and with the above contact terms. Interestingly, we have found that up to total derivative terms and Bianchi identities, these constraints uniquely fix all the unknown coefficients.

On T-duality of $R^2$-corrections to DBI action at all orders of gauge field

Recently, it has been observed that in a T-duality invariant world-volume theory in flat spacetime, all orders of gauge field strength and all orders of the D-brane velocity appear in two specific matrices. Using these two matrices, we construct the world-volume couplings of two massless NSNS states at order $α'^2$ and all orders of the velocity and the gauge field strength, by requiring them to be invariant under the linear T-duality. The standard extension $F\rightarrow F+P[B]$, then produces all orders of the pull-back of B-field into the action. We compare the resulting couplings for zero velocity and gauge field strength, with the $α'^2$ terms of the disk-level S-matrix element of two massless NSNS vertex operators in the presence of a constant background B-field. We have found an exact agreement.

T-duality of $α'$-correction to DBI action at all orders of gauge field

By explicit calculations of four-field couplings, we observe that the higher derivative corrections to the DBI action in flat space-time, can be either in a covariant form or in a T-duality invariant form. The two forms are related by a non-covariant field redefinition. Using this observation, we then propose a non-covariant but T-duality invariant action which includes all orders of massless fields and has two extra derivatives with respect to the DBI action.

Higher-derivative corrections to type II supergravity:Four Ramond-Ramond terms

It is known that the sphere-level S-matrix element of four type II superstrings has one kinematic factor. At the low energy limit, this factor produces the kinematic factor of the corresponding Feynman amplitudes in the supergravity. It also produces higher-derivative couplings of four strings. In this paper, we explicitly calculate the kinematic factor of four RR states in the supergravity. Using this factor, we then find the eight-derivative P-even and P-odd couplings of four RR fields, including the self-dual RR five-form field strength. We show that the P-even couplings are mapped to the standard $\bar{R}^4$ couplings by linear T-duality and S-duality transformations. We also confirm the P-even couplings with direct calculations in type II superstring theories.

On D-brane action at order $ α'^2$

We use compatibility of D-brane action with linear T-duality, S-duality and with S-matrix elements as guiding principles to find all world volume couplings of one massless closed and two open strings at order $α'^2$ in type II superstring theories. In particular, we find that the squares of second fundamental form appear only in world volume curvatures, and confirm the observation that dilaton appears in string frame action via the transformation $\hat{R}_{μν}\rightarrow \hat{R}_{μν}+\nabla_μ\nabla_νΦ$.

S-duality constraint on higher-derivative couplings

The Riemann curvature correction to the type II supergravity at eight-derivative level in string frame is given as e^{-2ϕ}(t_8t_8R^4+\frac{1}{4}\eps_{8}\eps_{8}R^4). For constant dilaton, it has been extended in the literature to the S-duality invariant form by extending the dilaton factor in the Einstein frame to the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. For non-constant dilaton, however, there are various couplings in the Einstein frame which are not consistent with the S-duality. By constructing the tensors $t_{2n}$ from Born-Infeld action, we include the appropriate Ricci and scalar curvatures as well as the dilaton couplings to make the above action to be consistent with the S-duality.

Sphere-level Ramond-Ramond couplings in Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz formalism

We calculate in details the sphere-level scattering amplitude of two Ramond-Ramond (RR) and two Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NSNS) vertex operators in type II superstring theories in Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) formalism. We then compare the expansion of this amplitude at order $α'^3$ with the eight-derivative couplings of the gravity and B-field that have been recently found based on S-dual and T-dual Ward identities. We find exact agreement. Moreover, using the above S-matrix element, we have found various couplings involving the dilaton field, and shown that they are also fully consistent with these Ward identities.

Generalized Riemann curvature corrections to type II supergravity

We observe that the replacement of the Riemann curvature with the generalized Riemann curvature into the corrections to the type II supergravity at order $α'^3$ which are in terms of the contractions of four Riemann curvatures $R^4$, is not fully consistent with the S-matrix elements in the superstring theory. In particular, they produce non-zero S-matrix elements for odd number of B-field strengths which are not consistent with the string theory results. Using the consistency of the couplings with the linear T-duality as a guiding principle, we consider all T-duality invariant couplings and fix their coefficients by requiring them to be consistent with the S-matrix elements. The new Lagrangian density is then equivalent to the replacement of the generalized Riemann curvature into the expression $t_8t_8R^4$.

Ramond-Ramond S-matrix elements from T-dual Ward identity

Recently it has been speculated that the Ward identities associated with the string dualities and the gauge symmetries can be used as guiding principles to find all components of the scattering amplitude of $n$ supergravitons from a given component of the S-matrix. In this paper, we apply the Ward identities associated with the T-duality and the gauge symmetries on the disk-level S-matrix element of one RR $(p-3)$-form, one NSNS and one NS states, to find the corresponding S-matrix elements of the RR $(p-1)$-form, $(p+1)$-form or the RR$(p+3)$-form on the world volume of a D$_p$-brane. Moreover, we apply these Ward identities on the S-matrix element of one RR $(p-3)$-form and two NSNS states to find the corresponding S-matrix elements of the RR $(p-1)$-form, $(p+1)$-form, $(p+3)$-form or the RR $(p+5)$-form.

S-duality invariant dilaton couplings at order $α'^3$

The Riemann curvature correction to the type II supergravity at eight-derivative level is given schematically as $(t_8t_8+{1}{8}\eps_{10}\eps_{10})R^4$ at tree-level. The replacement of the generalized Riemann curvature in $t_8t_8R^4$, proposed by Gross and Sloan, produces various NS-NS couplings which are invariant under T-duality. Recently, using the combination of S-duality and T-duality transformations on these couplings, we have found groups of couplings which are invariant under the S-duality transformation. In this paper, we have examined the couplings involving the dilaton with direct scattering amplitude calculations of four NS-NS vertex operators in the superstring theory and found exact agreement. The coupling $\eps_{10}\eps_{10}R^4$ is a total derivative term at four-field level. The $σ$-model beta function approach implies the presence of this term at the tree-level. By examining the sphere-level scattering amplitude of five gravitons, we have also confirmed the presence of this term in the tree-level effective action.

S-duality of D-brane action at order $O(α'^2)$

Using the compatibility of the DBI and the Chern-Simons actions with the T-duality transformations, the curvature corrections to these actions have been recently extended to include the quadratic B-field couplings at order $O(α'^2)$. In this paper, we use the compatibility of the couplings on D$_3$-brane with the S-duality to find the nonlinear RR couplings at order $O(α'^2)$. We confirm the quadratic RR couplings in the DBI part with the disk-level scattering amplitude. Using the regularized non-holomorphic Eisenstein series $E_1$, we then write the results in $SL(2,Z)$ invariant form.

S-duality of tree-level S-matrix elements in D$_3$-brane effective action

Recently it has been speculated that the S-matrix elements on the world volume of D$_3$-branes should satisfy the ward identity corresponding to the S-duality transformations. For a single brane and in the low energy limit, this indicates that in the abelian Dirac-Born-Indeld-Chern-Simons theory the combination of contact terms and tree-level massless poles in an $n$-point function should satisfy the S-duality. In this paper we examine in details the S-matrix element of three gauge bosons and one two-form and the S-matrix element of six gauge bosons in favor of the above proposal.

S-matrix elements from T-duality

Recently it has been speculated that the S-matrix elements satisfy the Ward identity associated with the T-duality. This indicates that a group of S-matrix elements is invariant under the linear T-duality transformations on the external states. If one evaluates one component of such T-dual multiplet, then all other components may be found by the simple use of the linear T-duality. The assumption that fields must be independent of the Killing coordinate, however, may cause, in some cases, the T-dual multiplet not to be gauge invariant. In those cases, the S-matrix elements contain more than one T-dual multiplet which are intertwined by the gauge symmetry. In this paper, we apply the T-dual Ward identity on the S-matrix element of one RR $(p-3)$-form and two NSNS states on the world volume of a D$_p$-brane to find its corresponding T-dual multiplet. In the case that the RR potential has two transverse indices, the T-dual multiplet is gauge invariant, however, in the case that it has one transverse index the multiplet is not gauge invariant. We find a new T-dual multiplet in this case by imposing the gauge symmetry. We show that the multiplets are reproduced by explicit calculation, and their low energy contact terms at order $α'^2$ are consistent with the existing couplings in the literature.

T-duality of curvature terms in D-brane actions

We examine the known curvature terms in the DBI part of the D-brane action under the T-duality transformation. Using the compatibility of the action with the standard rules of T-duality at the linear order as a guiding principle, we include the appropriate NS-NS $B$-field terms in the action and show that they reproduce the O(α'^2) terms of the corresponding disk-level scattering amplitude.

T-duality of D-brane action at order $α'$ in bosonic string theory

In bosonic string theory, it is known that the Buscher rules for the T-duality transformations receive quantum corrections at order $α'$. In this paper, we use the consistency of the gravity couplings on the D-brane effective action at order $α'$, with the above T-duality transformations to find the B-field and the dilaton couplings. We show that these couplings are fully consistent with the corresponding disk-level S-matrix elements in string theory.

Ricci curvature corrections to type II supergravity

We examine the NS-NS corrections to the type II supergravity given by Gross and Sloan, under the linear T-duality transformations. We show that the gravity and the B-field couplings are invariant under off-shell T-duality, whereas the dilaton couplings are invariant under on-shell T-duality. Requiring the compatibility of the dilaton couplings with off-shell T-duality as a guiding principle, we extend them to include the appropriate Ricci curvature and the divergence of the B-field strength.

S-duality of color-ordered amplitudes

Recently, it has been proposed that the S-matrix elements on the world volume of an abelian D$_3$-brane are consistent with the Ward identity associated with the S-duality. In this paper we extend this study to the case of multiple D$_3$-branes. We speculate that the S-matrix elements are consistent with the S-dual Ward identity irrespective of the ordering of the external states. Imposing this symmetry on the particular case of the S-matrix element of one Kalb-Ramond, one transverse scalar and two nonabelian gauge bosons, we will find the linear S-duality transformation of the commutator of two nonabelian gauge field strengths. Using this transformation and the standard S-duality transformations of the supergravity fields, all other nonabelian S-matrix elements of one closed and three open string states can be found by the S-duality proposal. We will show that the predicted S-matrix elements are reproduced exactly by explicit calculations.

T-duality of the Riemann curvature corrections to supergravity

We examine the known Riemann curvature corrections to the supergravity action at order $α'^3$ under the T-duality transformations. Using the compatibility of the action with the linear T-duality and with the S-matrix calculations as guiding principles, we have found the couplings of four $B$-field strengths and the couplings of two Riemann curvatures and two $B$-field strengths at order $α'^3$. Using the S-matrix calculations we have also found new dilaton couplings in the string frame at this order.

Tree-level S-matrix elements from S-duality

It has been speculated that the S-matrix elements of type IIB superstring theory satisfy the Ward identity associated with the S-duality. This indicates that a group of S-matrix elements at each loop level are invariant under the linear $SL(2,R)$ transformations. If one evaluates one element of such S-dual multiplet, then all other components can be found by the simple use of the linear $SL(2,R)$ transformations. In this paper, we calculate the disk-level S-matrix element of one graviton(dilaton), one B-field and one gauge boson on the word volume of D$_3$-brane. The S-dual multiplet corresponding to the graviton(dilaton) amplitude has three(six) components. In particular, the graviton multiplet has the S-matrix element of one graviton, one R-R two-form and one gauge boson, and the dilaton multiplet has the S-matrix element of one R-R scalar, one B-field and one gauge boson vertex operators. We calculate explicitly these particular components and show that they are precisely the ones predicted by the S-duality. We have also found the low energy contact terms of the dilaton multiplet at order $α'^2$.

On S-duality of D$_3$-brane S-matrix

There is a conjecture in the literature that indicates the tree-level S-matrix elements of graviton become symmetric under the $SL(2,Z)$ transformation after including the loops and the nonperturbative effects. Using the Ward identity corresponding to the global S-duality transformations, this conjecture can be extended to other S-matrix elements as well. While the $SL(2,Z)$ transformation on the background dilaton is nonlinear, the Ward identity dictates the S-duality transformations on external states should be the linearized $SL(2,R)$ transformations. We examine in details various S-matrix elements involving massless closed string and/or open string vertex operators on the world volume of D$_3$-brane in favor of this conjecture.

S-duality of S-matrix

Recently, it has been observed that the kinematic factor of the disk-level S-matrix element of two RR two-forms and the disk-level S-matrix element of two B-fields on the world volume of D$_3$-brane are compatible with the standard rules of S-duality. Inspired by this observation, we speculate that the S-matrix elements on the world volume of D$_3$-brane are invariant under the $SL(2,Z)$ transformation. Compatibility with S-duality requires the S-matrix elements on the world volume of D$_1$-brane and D$_5$-brane to be extended to the $SL(2,Z)$-covariant form. In particular, this implies the S-matrix elements on the world volume of F$_1$-string and NS$_5$-brane at strong coupling to be related by S-duality to the disk-level S-matrix elements of D$_1$-string and D$_5$-brane, respectively. %The S-matrix elements then dictate that both F$_1$-string and NS$_5$-brane have D$_1$-string excitations. The contact terms of these S-matrix elements at order $O(α'^0)$ produce a Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons type effective action for both F$_1$-string and NS$_5$-brane. They are consistent with the $SL(2,R)$-covariant action appears in the literature.

T-duality of anomalous Chern-Simons couplings

It is known that the anomalous D$_p$-brane Chern-Simons couplings are not consistent with the standard rules of T-duality. Using compatibility of these couplings with the linear T-duality transformations, the B-field gauge transformations and with the general coordinate transformations as guiding principles we find new couplings at order $O(α'^2)$ for ${\cal C}^{(p-3)}$, ${\cal C}^{(p-1)}$, ${\cal C}^{(p+1)}$ and ${\cal C}^{(p+3)}$.

Towards extending the Chern-Simons couplings at order $O(α'^2)$

Using the compatibility of the anomalous Chern-Simons couplings on D$_p$-branes with the linear T-duality and with the antisymmetric B-field gauge transformations, some couplings have been recently found for $C^{(p-3)}$ at order $O(α'^2)$. We examine these couplings with the S-matrix element of one RR and two antisymmetric B-field vertex operators. We find that the S-matrix element reproduces these couplings as well as some other couplings. Each of them is invariant under the linear T-duality and the B-field gauge transformations.

Ramond-Ramond field strength couplings on D-branes

By examining in details the disk level S-matrix element of one massless RR and one NSNS states at order O(α'^2), we find the coupling of one RR and one NSNS fields on the world volume of a D$_p$-brane. The non-zero couplings involve the first derivative of the RR field strengths F^{(p)}, F^{(p+2)} and F^{(p+4)}. We then fix the on-shell ambiguity of the couplings by requiring consistency with the linear T-duality transformations. Moreover, consistency with the non-linear T-duality requires that the RR field strength in the above couplings to be {\cal F}=d{\cal C} where {\cal C}=e^{B}C.

The RN/CFT Correspondence

Recently it has been shown in 0901.0931 [hep-th] that the approach to extremality for the non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is not continuous. The non-extremal RN black hole splits into two spacetimes at the extremality: an extremal black hole and a disconnected $AdS_2\times S^2$ space which has been called the "compactification solution". As a possible resolution for understanding the entropy of extremal RN black hole, it has been speculated that the entropy of the non-extremal black hole may be carried by the latter solution. By uplifting the four dimensional "compactification solution" with electric charge $Q_e$ to a five dimensional solution, we show that this solution is dual to a CFT with central charge $c=6Q_e^3$. The Cardy formula then shows that the microscopic entropy of the CFT is the same as the macroscopic entropy of the "compactification solution".

On thermodynamics of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theories at strong coupling

Recently it has been conjectured that N=6, U(N)_{k} \times U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons theory is dual to M-theory on AdS_4\times S^7/Z_{k}. By studying one-loop correction to the M-theory effective action, we calculate the correction to the entropy of thermal field theory at strong coupling. For large k level, we have also found the alpha' correction to the entropy from the string correction of the type IIA effective action. The structure of these two corrections at strong t'Hooft coupling are different.

Tachyon Tunnelling in D-brane-anti-D-brane

Using the tachyon DBI action proposal for the effective theory of non-coincident D$_p$-brane-anti-D$_p$-brane system, we study the decay of this system in the tachyon channel. We assume that the branes separation is held fixed, i.e. no throat formation, and then find the bounce solution which describe the decay of the system from false to the true vacuum of the tachyon potential. We shall show that due to the non-standard form of the kinetic term in the effective action, the thin wall approximation for calculating the bubble nucleation rate gives a result which is independent of the branes separation. This unusual result might indicate that the true decay of this metastable system should be via a solution that represents a throat formation as well as the tachyon tunneling.

Constraints on Dirac-Born-Infeld type dark energy models from varying alpha

We study the variation of the effective fine structure constant alpha for Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type dark energy models. The DBI action based on string theory naturally gives rise to a coupling between gauge fields and a scalar field responsible for accelerated expansion of the universe. This leads to the change of alpha due to a dynamical evolution of the scalar field, which can be compatible with the recently observed cosmological data around the redshift $\tilde{z} \lesssim 3$. We place constraints on several different DBI models including exponential, inverse power-law and rolling massive scalar potentials. We find that these models can satisfy the varying alpha constraint provided that mass scales of the potentials are fine-tuned. When we adopt the mass scales which are motivated by string theory, both exponential and inverse power-law potentials give unacceptably large change of alpha, thus ruled out from observations. On the other hand the rolling massive scalar potential is compatible with the observationally allowed variation of alpha. Therefore the information of varying alpha provides a powerful way to distinguish between a number of string-inspired DBI dark energy models.

Cosmology from Rolling Massive Scalar Field on the anti-D3 Brane of de Sitter Vacua

We investigate a string-inspired scenario associated with a rolling massive scalar field on D-branes and discuss its cosmological implications. In particular, we discuss cosmological evolution of the massive scalar field on the ant-D3 brane of KKLT vacua. Unlike the case of tachyon field, because of the warp factor of the anti-D3 brane, it is possible to obtain the required level of amplitude of density perturbations. We study the spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations generated during the rolling scalar inflation and show that our scenario satisfies the observational constraint coming from the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies and other observational data. We also implement the negative cosmological constant arising from the stabilization of the modulus fields in the KKLT vacua and find that this leads to a successful reheating in which the energy density of the scalar field effectively scales as a pressureless dust. The present dark energy can be also explained in our scenario provided that the potential energy of the massive rolling scalar does not exactly cancel with the amplitude of the negative cosmological constant at the potential minimum.

S-matrix elements and covariant tachyon action in type 0 theory

We then find an expansion for theses amplitudes that their leading order terms correspond to a covariant tachyon action. To the order considered, there are no $T^4$, $T^2(\prt T)^2$, $T^2H^2$, nor $T^2R$ tachyon couplings, whereas, the tachyon couplings $F\bF T$ and $T^2F^2$ are non-zero.

Slowly varying tachyon and tachyon potential

We show that the scattering amplitude of four open string scalars or tachyons on the world-volume of a D$_p$-brane in the bosonic string theory can be written in a universal form. The difference between this amplitude and the corresponding amplitude in the superstring theory is in an extra tachyonic pole. We show that in an $α'$ expansion and for slowly varying fields, the amplitude is consistent with the tachyonic DBI action in which the even part of the tachyon potential is $V(T)=e^{-(\sqrtπ T/α)^2}$ with $α=1$ for bosonic theory and $α=\sqrt{2}$ for superstring theory.
