Fast and Optimal Adaptive Tracking Control: A Novel Meta-Reinforcement Learning via Conditional Generative Adversarial Net

The control of nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics has been a significant field of research for many years. This paper presents a novel data-driven optimal adaptive control structure with less control effort and faster adaptation than standard adaptive control counterparts. The proposed control structure utilizes the system's recorded data to increase the speed of adaptation and performance dramatically. In this study, we employ a conditional generative adversarial net (CGAN) as a novel central pattern generator to reproduce the steady-state harmonic pattern of the control signals matching the system's uncertainties over a wide range. We can also use the CGAN architecture as a fault detector. The CGAN provides a low-dimensional latent space of uncertainties. It enables rapid and convenient adaptation when there are many parametric uncertainties, especially for large-scale systems. Then, we introduce a novel meta-reinforcement learning framework to adapt the latent space of CGAN to the system's uncertainties as an optimal direct adaptive controller without any system identifier. Another part of the control structure is a regulator that achieves semi-global asymptotic tracking using the Lyapunov stability analysis. Finally, via some simulations, we evaluate the capabilities of the proposed designs on two dynamical systems, a robot manipulator and a large-scale musculoskeletal structure, in the presence of disturbance and perturbation.

Azimuthal modulation of electromagnetically-induced transparency by using asymmetrical Laguerre-Gaussian beams

Recently, the generation and detection of structured light field have drawn a great deal of attention, due to their importance in high-capacity optical data storage and quantum technology. In this letter, we explore the azimuthal modulation of optical transparency in a four-level double-V type quantum system near a plasmonic nanostructure. A Laguerre-Gaussian beam and the interaction of the system with free-space vacuum modes have been employed to create the phase-dependent absorption of a non-vortex probe field. First, we demonstrate how to identify the azimuthal index associated with the conventional LG beam via measuring the probe absorption so that the phase information of such a beam gets encoded on the spatially-dependent absorption profile with angularly-distributed lobes. Also, a spatially-varying optical transparency can be formed, due to the periodic variation of the absorption spectrum. Then, asymmetrical Laguerre-Gaussian beams are used to extend the selective spatial transparency mechanism to asymmetric spatially-structured windows, allowing for optical manipulation of spatial modes at arbitrary positions. Moreover, we investigate the influence of the asymmetric parameter on the features of the spatial inhomogeneities and show how the beams enable us to imprint the phase information of the orbital angular momentum at a desired position.

Manipulation and exchange of Light with Orbital Angular Momentum in Quantum Dot Molecules

We study the interaction of laser pulses carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with structural asymmetry quantum dot molecules characterized by four energy levels. We demonstrate how the inter-dot tunneling endows exchange of optical vortices between different frequencies. We consider a case where a weak probe beam has an optical vortex and thus has a zero intensity at the center. The presence of tunneling coupling generates an additional weak laser beam with the same vorticity as that of the incident vortex beam. We analyze conditions for the vortex of the initial beam to be transferred efficiently to the generated beam. The propagation of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams possessing OAM states characterized by both azimuthal and radial indices is then investigated for the case where the strong control beam is also an OAM mode. It is shown that the conservation of OAM states is always satisfied over the OAM exchange process. Yet, an abnormal case is observed in which the radial index induces some intensity patterns of the generated beam which differs from a pure LG beam of incident beams. Analytical solutions are provided to elucidate such effects induced by radial indices on propagation characteristics of OAM beams. When superimposing two initially present weak OAM modes, it is observed that the resulting optical vortices move about the beam axis as the light propagates, forming a sort of "constellation" around the center. The shift in axis of such a composite pulses is due to the effect of inter-dot tunneling which is controlled by an external electric voltage. The optical angular momenta may add a new degree of freedom in the study of solid systems suitable for quantum technologies.

Superluminal light propagation in a normal dispersive medium

We study the propagation of a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam through a dispersive atomic medium. We restrict ourselves to applying a weak probe field and three strong coupling fields to the medium, which leads to developing a four-level double $V$-type atomic system. We first regard all the three strong coupling fields as the plane-waves and calculate an analytical expression for the group velocity of the probe LG field on the optical axis at the waist of the field. It appears that the resulting formula in a dispersive medium is in good agreement with that of the free space. We also find a more general analytical expression for the group velocity of the probe LG field out of the optical axis and compare with its projection onto the propagation axis. It is turned out that these two quantities are equal on the optical axis, at the waist of the beam and the Rayleigh range. Finally, we assume one of the strong coupling fields to be an LG field and explore how its orbital angular momentum (OAM) affects the group velocity of the probe LG field. Our analysis predicts a strange behavior for the group velocity of the probe LG field inside a normal dispersive medium so that it can exceed the speed of light in free space. Such an unusual propagation of the LG light beam results from the distortion of its helical phase front via the classical interference of the planar and LG fields.

Atom- Photon Entanglement in Double- Lambda Quantum System by using femtosecond Gaussian pulses

The dynamical behavior of entanglement between the atomic ensemble and the spontaneous emission is investigated by applying the femtosecond Gaussian pulses in double- lambda quantum system. In fact by solving the density matrix equations of motion in such a system and by using the von Neumann entropy, the degree of entanglement (DEM) could be measured in semi classical regime and in the multi-photon resonance condition. We interested in investigating the maximum value for DEM and controlled the DEM via relative phase. At first we consider three laser fields as CW optical laser fields and one femtosecond Gaussian field. In this case DEM has interesting behavior. When the system is applied by the other laser fields and Gaussian pulse is still there DEM can be controlled via phase but after finishing the time duration of the femtosecond Gaussian pulse DEM will be phase independent. Then we consider all the laser fields as femtosecond Gaussian pulses which interact with atomic system and we achieve to this point that the steady state entanglement can be occurred by using such ultra-short laser pulses; in this situation DEM will be phase independent. The system would be disentangled in special parameters of Rabi frequencies and all the atoms are coherently populated in a dark state in dressed state picture. Moreover when the system is entangled, there is a population distribution of the atoms in dressed states.

Atom-photon, two-mode entanglement and two-mode squeezing in the presence of cross-Kerr nonlinearity

The interaction of two quantized fields and three-level quantum system in a lambda-type configuration is investigated in the presence of cross-Kerr nonlinearity. We consider three models of coupling for the atom-photon interaction. First, we study the dynamical behavior of the atom-photon entanglement and show that increasing the cross-Kerr nonlinearity results in different behaviors in three considered models. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the two quantized modes can be entangled, on the other hand, by applying a classical driving field to the lower levels. Increasing the classical driving field destroys the long time atom-photon entanglement. Our results show that an oscillatory two-mode squeezing can be generated in the absence of a driving classical field and the cross-Kerr nonlinearity.

Magneto optical rotation in a GaAs Quantum Well Waveguide

The interaction of two orthogonally polarized beams and a four-level GaAs quantum well (QW) waveguide is investigated. It is shown that, by applying a static magnetic field normal to the propagation direction of the driving beams, the birefringence can be induced in the QW waveguide. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the dephasing rate between two ground states of the QW waveguide makes it a dichromatic medium and can also diminish the induced birefringence. Our results show how a large and complete magneto-optical rotation in the QW waveguide can be obtained via adjusting the intensity of the magnetic field and also the length of the QW waveguide.

Multi-photon Resonance Phenomena Using Laguerre-Gaussian Beams

We study the influence of laser profile on the linewidth of the optical spectrum of multi-photon resonance phenomena. First, we investigate the dependence of the absorption spectrum on the laser profile in a two-level system. Thanks to the Laguerre-Gaussian field, the linewidth of the one-photon optical pumping and two-photon absorption peaks are explicitly narrower than that obtained with a Gaussian field. In next section, it is shown that, comparing with the the Gaussian fields, the Laguerre-Gaussian ones reduce the linewidth of the optical spectrum in the coherent population trapping. Interestingly, it turns out that its use of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam makes the linewidth of the spectrum narrower as compared with a Gaussian one in a Doppler-broadened electromagnetically induced transparency. Moreover, we study the effect of the laser profile on the Autler-Townes doublet structure in the absorption spectrum for a laser-driven four-level atomic system. We also consider the different values of the Laguerre-Gaussian mode beam waist, and, perhaps more remarkable, we find that for the small values of waist, the Autler-Townes doublet can be removed and a prominent narrow central peak appears in the absorption spectrum. Finally, we investigate the effect of the laser profile on the linewidth of the sub-natural three-photon absorption peak of double dark resonance. The differences in the linewidth are quite large, offering potential applications in metrology and isotope separation methods. Our results can be used for super ultra high resolution laser spectroscopy and to improve the resolution of the technology of isotope/isomer separation and photo-biology even at essential overlap of the spectra of the different particles.

Atom- photon entanglement beyond the multi-photon resonance condition

The density matrix equations of motion in near-degenerate three-level V-type closed-loop atomic system are calculated numerically in Floquet frame. The dynamical behavior of atom- photon entanglement between the dressed atom and its spontaneous emission is studied in semi classical approach beyond the two-photon resonance condition in such a system. The quantum entropy of these two subsystems is investigated by using the von Neumann entropy. It is shown that, the degree of entanglement measure (DEM) can be controlled via the intensity and the detuning of coupling optical field and quantum interference induced by spontaneous emission. Moreover in the absence of quantum interference the steady state behavior of DEM can be achieved even in beyond the two- photon resonance condition. Furthermore in the absence of quantum interference for special parameters of Rabi frequency and detuning of driving laser field disentanglement can be occurred. Also the electromagnetically induced transparency condition can be obtained when the system is disentangled.

Gain-assisted superluminal light propagation through a Bose-Einstein condensate cavity system

The propagation of a probe laser field in a cavity optomechanical system with a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. The transmission properties of the system are investigated and it is shown that the group velocity of the probe pulse field can be controlled by Rabi frequency of the pump laser field. The effect of the decay rate of the cavity photons on the group velocity is studied and it is demonstrated that for small values of the decay rates, the slope of phase dispersion switches from positive to negative just by changing the Rabi frequency of the pump field. Then, the gain-assisted superluminal light propagation due to the cross-Kerr nonlinearity is established in cavity optomechanical system with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Such behavior can not appear in the pump-probe two-level atomic systems in the normal phase. We also find that the amplification is achieved without inversion in the population of the quantum energy levels.

Maximal Atom-Photon Entanglement in a Double-Lambda Quantum System

The atom-photon entanglement of dressed atom and its spontaneous emission in a Double-Lambda closed-loop atomic system is studied in multi-photon resonance condition. It is shown that, even in the absence of quantum interference due to the spontaneous emission, the von Neumann entropy is phase-sensitive and it can be controlled by either intensity or relative phase of the applied fields. It is demonstrated that, for the special case of Rabi frequency of the applied fields the system is maximally entangled. Moreover, the open-loop configuration is considered and it is shown that the degree of entanglement measure (DEM) can be controlled by intensity of the applied fields. Furthermore, in electromagnetically induced transparency condition, the system is disentangled. Such a system can be used for quantum information processing via entanglement using optical switching.

Amplification without inversion, fast light and optical bistability in a duplicated two-level system

The optical properties of a weak probe field in a duplicated two-level system are investigated in multiphoton resonance (MPR) condition and beyond it. It is shown that, by changing the relative phase of applied fields, the absorption switches to the amplification without inversion in MPR condition. By applying the Floquet decomposition to the equation of motion beyond MPR condition, it is shown that the phase-dependent behavior is valid only in MPR condition. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by the intensity of applied fields and the gain-assisted superluminal light propagation (fast light) is obtained in this system. In addition, the optical bistability (OB) behavior of the system is studied beyond MPR condition. We apply an indirect incoherent pumping field to the system and it is found that the group velocity and OB behavior of the system can be controlled by incoherent pumping rate.

The atom-photon entanglement is studied in a three-level lambda-type closed-loop atomic system in multi-photon resonance condition and beyond it. It is shown that the von Neumann entropy in such a system is phase dependent, and it can be controlled by either intensity or relative phase of applied fields. It is demonstrated that for the special case of Rabi frequency of applied fields, the system is disentangled.

Phase-controlled transparent superluminal light propagation in a Doppler-broadened four-level N-type system

The propagation of a weak probe field in a four-level N-type quantum system in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is theoretically investigated. The optical properties of the system are studied and it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by relative phase of applied fields. By changing the relative phase of applied fields, the group velocity of light pulse changes from transparent subluminal to the transparent superluminal light propagation. Thus, the phase-controlled absorption-free superluminal light propagation is obtained without applying an incoherent laser fields to the system. The propagation of a weak probe light pulse is studied by solving the Maxwell's wave equation on numerical grid in space and time. Moreover, we study the third order self- and cross-Kerr susceptibility of probe field and calculate the nonlinear cross-phase shift for different values of intensity of applied fields. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the light pulse propagation and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation directions allows us to preserve our results even in the presence of Doppler effect. It is demonstrated that by increasing the Doppler width of distribution to the room temperature, the dispersion changes from transparent subluminal to transparent superluminal light propagation which is our major motivation for this work.

Phase-controlled atom-photon entanglement in a three-level V-type atomic system via spontaneously generated coherence

We investigate the dynamical behavior of the atom-photon entanglement in a V-type three-level quantum system using the atomic reduced entropy. It is shown that an atom and photons are entangled at the steady-state; however disentanglement can also be achieved in an especial condition. It is demonstrated that in the presence of quantum interference induced by spontaneous emission, the reduced entropy and the atom-photon entanglement are phase-dependent. Non-stationary solution is also obtained when the quantum interference due to the spontaneous emission is completely included.

The effect of a coupling field on the entanglement dynamics of a three-level atom

The effect of a coupling laser field on the entanglement of a three-level quantum system and its spontaneous emission is investigated via reduced quantum entropy. We consider two schemes, the upper- and lower-level couplings. By calculating the degree of entanglement (DEM) for both systems, it is shown that the entanglement between atom and its spontaneous emission can be controlled by the coupling laser field. This field, however, affects the entanglement differently in the two schemes; it is only the lower-level coupling scheme that shows a nonzero steady state DEM which can be controlled by the intensity and detuning of the coupling laser field.

Absorption-free superluminal light propagation in a V-type system

Dispersion and absorption properties of a weak probe field in a three-level V-type atomic system is studied. By application of indirect incoherent pump fields the effect of populating upper levels on optical properties of the atomic medium in presence of a strong coherent pump field is investigated. It is shown that the slope of dispersion changes from positive to negative just by changing the intensity of the coherent or indirect incoherent pump fields. It is demonstrated that the absorption-free subluminal and superluminal light propagation appears in this system.
