Effective capacity maximization of two-way full-duplex and half-duplex relays with finite block length packets transmission

In order to satisfy the delay requirements of telecommunication systems, in this paper, we present a cooperative network with the short packet transmission in the Rayleigh fading channel. The desired relay can be implemented as a two-way half-duplex (HD) or a two-way full-duplex (FD). Also, for more accurate satisfaction and reduction of communication delays, sending and receiving with short packets is considered. Effective capacity appropriately measures the transmission rate under the delay constraint. Therefore, it is considered as a performance evaluation criterion here. With a two-way relay, two nodes exchange data with each other using a relay simultaneously. The priorities and requirements of the two nodes are not necessarily the same. Therefore, to increase performance, the system is modeled and solved as a multi-objective problem. In this way, the available power in the network is divided between the relay and two nodes, and the effective capacity of the two nodes is maximized. Depending on the different conditions, the optimal amount of allocated power to relay and nodes is calculated. However, due to the complexity and time consuming calculations, an approximate method which speeds up the calculation is presented. The approximated solution has a very close performance to the optimal allocated power. Finally, various comparisons have been made in different conditions between the performance of two-way HD and two-way FD relays. The improvement of multi-objective power allocation has been shown, especially when the relay is not located in the middle of two nodes.

Characterization of Effective Capacity in Antenna Selection MIMO Systems

In this Paper, the effective capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in two different cases with receive antenna selection (RAS) and transmit antenna selection (TAS) schemes is investigated. A closed-form solution for the maximum constant arrival rate of this network with statistical delay quality of service (QoS) constraint is extracted in the quasi-static fading channel. This study is conducted in two different cases. When channel state information (CSI) is not available at the MIMO transmitter, implementation of TAS is difficult. Therefore, RAS scheme is employed and one antenna with the maximum instantaneous signal to noise ratio (SNR) is chosen at the receiver. On the other hand, when CSI is available at the transmitter, TAS scheme is executed. In this case one antenna is selected at the transmitter. Moreover, an optimal power-control policy is applied to the selected antenna and the effective capacity of the MIMO system is derived. Finally, this optimal power adaptation and the effective capacity are investigated in two asymptotic cases with the loose and strict QoS requirements. In particular, we show that in the TAS scheme with the loose QoS restriction, the effective capacity converges to the ergodic capacity. Then, an exact closed-form solution is obtained for the ergodic capacity of the channel here.

Effective Capacity of Receive Antenna Selection MIMO-OSTBC Systems in Co-Channel Interference

In this paper, delay constrained performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in a dense environment with co-channel interference is investigated. We apply orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter, and for alleviating the high complexity and cost of the MIMO system, receive antenna selection (RAS) scheme is employed in the downlink. Here, for simple and cheap mobile handsets, one antenna is chosen at the receiver in each utilization of the channel. Under these assumptions, a maximum constant arrival rate with the delay quality-of-service (QoS) guarantee in a wireless channel is extracted. We obtain a closed-form solution for the effective capacity of the MIMO-OSTBC channel with the RAS scheme in a quasi-static Rayleigh fading conditions and co-channel interference. After all, the numerical simulations are provided and verified the theoretical results.

Power Allocation and Effective Capacity of AF Successive Relays

In the relay based telecommunications with $K$ relays between the source and destination, $K+1$ time or frequency slots are required for a single frame transmission. However, without the relays, only one time or frequency slot is used for a single frame transmission. Therefore, despite the benefits of relaying systems, this type of communications is not efficient from the spectral efficiency viewpoint. One solution to reduce this issue might be the full-duplex (FD) relays. An old technique which is reconsidered recently to improve the spectral efficiency of telecommunication systems. However, FD relays have a certain complexity, so, some similar techniques such as successive relays with nearly the same performance but less complexity is taken into account now. In successive relaying systems, two relays between the source and destination are employed which receive the transmitted frames from the source and relay it to the destination successively. This structure generally acts like an FD relays. In this paper, the effective capacity performance of an amplify and forward (AF) successive relaying systems with power allocation strategy at the relays are studied perfectly. However, while the inter-rely interference (IRI) between two successive relays has to be managed well, the power allocation and the effective capacity is derived under different assumptions about the IRI. In this way, we assume weak or strong, short or long-term constraints on the IRI. Then we extract the optimal transmitted power at the relay to maximize the effective capacity under these constraints.
