A Codebook Design for FD-MIMO Systems with Multi-Panel Array

In this work, we study codebook designs for full-dimension multiple-input multiple-output (FD-MIMO) systems with a multi-panel array (MPA). We propose novel codebooks which allow precise beam structures for MPA FD-MIMO systems by investigating the physical properties and alignments of the panels. We specifically exploit the characteristic that a group of antennas in a vertical direction exhibit more correlation than those in a horizontal direction. This enables an economical use of feedback bits while constructing finer beams compared to conventional codebooks. The codebook is further improved by dynamically allocating the feedback bits on multiple parts such as beam amplitude and co-phasing coefficients using reinforcement learning. The numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of both performance and computational complexity.

Decentralized Computation Offloading With Cooperative UAVs: Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Perspective

Limited computing resources of internet-of-things (IoT) nodes incur prohibitive latency in processing input data. This triggers new research opportunities toward task offloading systems where edge servers handle intensive computations of IoT devices. Deploying the computing servers at existing base stations may not be sufficient to support IoT nodes operating in a harsh environment. This requests mobile edge servers to be mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that provide on-demand mobile edge computing (MEC) services. Time-varying offloading demands and mobility of UAVs need a joint design of the optimization variables for all time instances. Therefore, an online decision mechanism is essential for UAV-aided MEC networks. This article presents an overview of recent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approaches where decisions about UAVs and IoT nodes are taken in an online manner. Specifically, joint optimization over task offloading, resource allocation, and UAV mobility is addressed from the DRL perspective. For the decentralized implementation, a multi-agent DRL method is proposed where multiple intelligent UAVs cooperatively determine their computations and communication policies without central coordination. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed decentralized learning strategy is superior to existing DRL solutions. The proposed framework sheds light on the viability of the decentralized DRL techniques in designing self-organizing IoT networks.

Characterization of Effective Capacity in Antenna Selection MIMO Systems

In this Paper, the effective capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in two different cases with receive antenna selection (RAS) and transmit antenna selection (TAS) schemes is investigated. A closed-form solution for the maximum constant arrival rate of this network with statistical delay quality of service (QoS) constraint is extracted in the quasi-static fading channel. This study is conducted in two different cases. When channel state information (CSI) is not available at the MIMO transmitter, implementation of TAS is difficult. Therefore, RAS scheme is employed and one antenna with the maximum instantaneous signal to noise ratio (SNR) is chosen at the receiver. On the other hand, when CSI is available at the transmitter, TAS scheme is executed. In this case one antenna is selected at the transmitter. Moreover, an optimal power-control policy is applied to the selected antenna and the effective capacity of the MIMO system is derived. Finally, this optimal power adaptation and the effective capacity are investigated in two asymptotic cases with the loose and strict QoS requirements. In particular, we show that in the TAS scheme with the loose QoS restriction, the effective capacity converges to the ergodic capacity. Then, an exact closed-form solution is obtained for the ergodic capacity of the channel here.

A New Energy Efficient Beamforming Strategy for MISO Interfering Broadcast Channels based on Large Systems Analysis

In this paper, we propose a new beamforming design to maximize energy efficiency (EE) for multiple input single output interfering broadcast channels (IFBC). Under this model, the EE problem is non-convex in general due to the coupled interference and its fractional form, and thus it is difficult to solve the problem. Conventional algorithms which address this problem have adopted an iterative method for each channel realization, which requires high computational complexity. In order to reduce the computational complexity, we parameterize the beamforming vector by scalar parameters related to beam direction and power. Then, by employing asymptotic results of random matrix theory with this parametrization, we identify the optimal parameters to maximize the EE in the large system limit assuming that the number of transmit antennas and users are large with a fixed ratio. In the asymptotic regime, our solutions depend only on the second order channel statistics, which yields significantly reduced computational complexity and system overhead compared to the conventional approaches. Hence, the beamforming vector to maximize the EE performance can be determined with local channel state information and the optimized parameters. Based on the asymptotic results, the proposed scheme can provide insights on the average EE performance, and a simple yet efficient beamforming strategy is introduced for the finite system case. Numerical results confirm that the proposed scheme shows a negligible performance loss compared to the best result achieved by the conventional approaches even with small system dimensions, with much reduced system complexity.

Joint Subcarrier and Power Allocation Methods in Wireless Powered Communication Network for OFDM systems

In this paper, we investigate wireless powered communication network for OFDM systems, where a hybrid access point (H-AP) broadcasts energy signals to users in the downlink, and the users transmit information signals to the H-AP in the uplink based on an orthogonal frequency division multiple access scheme. We consider a fullduplex H-AP which simultaneously transmits energy signals and receives information signals. In this scenario, we address a joint subcarrier scheduling and power allocation problem to maximize the sum-rate under two cases: perfect self-interference cancelation (SIC) where the H-AP fully eliminates its self interference (SI) and imperfect SIC where the residual SI exist. In general, the problems for both cases are non-convex due to the subcarrier scheduling, and thus it requires an exhaustive search method, which is prohibitively complicated to obtain the globally optimal solution. In order to reduce the complexity, for the perfect SIC scenario, we jointly optimize subcarrier scheduling and power allocation by applying the Lagrange duality method. Next, for the imperfect SIC case, the problem is more complicated due to the SI at the H-AP. To solve the problem, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the projected gradient method. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm for the case of perfect SIC exhibits only negligible sum-rate performance loss compared to the optimal algorithm, and the proposed iterative algorithm for the imperfect SIC case offers a significant performance gain over conventional schemes.

Saturation Power based Simple Energy Efficiency Maximization Schemes for MU-MISO Systems

In this paper, we investigate an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem in multi-user multiple input single output downlink channels. The optimization problem in this system model is difficult to solve in general, since it is in non-convex fractional form. Hence, conventional algorithms have addressed the problem in an iterative manner for each channel realization, which leads to high computational complexity. To tackle this complexity issue, we propose a new simple method by utilizing the fact that the EE maximization is identical to the spectral efficiency (SE) maximization for the region of the power below a certain transmit power referred to as saturation power. In order to calculate the saturation power, we first introduce upper and lower bounds of the EE performance by adopting a maximal ratio transmission beamforming strategy. Then, we propose an efficient way to compute the saturation power for the EE maximization problem. Once we determine the saturation power corresponding to the maximum EE in advance, we can solve the EE maximization problem with SE maximization schemes with low complexity. The derived saturation power is parameterized by employing random matrix theory, which relies only on the second order channel statistics. Hence, this approach requires much lower computational complexity compared to a conventional scheme which exploits instantaneous channel state information, and provides insight on the saturation power. Numerical results validate that the proposed algorithm achieves near optimal EE performance with significantly reduced complexity.

Transmission Schemes based on Sum Rate Analysis in Distributed Antenna Systems

In this paper, we study single cell multi-user downlink distributed antenna systems (DAS) where antenna ports are geographically separated in a cell. First, we derive an expression of the ergodic sum rate for the DAS in the presence of pathloss. Then, we propose a transmission selection scheme based on the derived expressions which does not require channel state information at the transmitter. Utilizing the knowledge of distance information from a user to each distributed antenna (DA) port, we consider the optimization of pairings of DA ports and users to maximize the system performance. Based on the ergodic sum rate expressions, the proposed scheme chooses the best mode maximizing the ergodic sum rate among mode candidates. In our proposed scheme, the number of mode candidates are greatly reduced compared to that of ideal mode selection. In addition, we analyze the signal to noise ratio cross-over point for different modes using the sum rate expressions. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we show the accuracy of our derivations for the ergodic sum rate. Moreover, simulation results with the pathloss modeling confirm that the proposed scheme produces the average sum rate identical to the ideal mode selection with significantly reduced candidates.

Transmission Selection Schemes using Sum Rate Analysis in Distributed Antenna Systems

In this paper, we study single cell multi-user downlink distributed antenna systems (DAS) where the antenna ports are geographically separated in a cell. First, we derive an expression of the ergodic sum rate for DAS in the presence of pathloss. Then, we propose a transmission selection scheme based on the derived expressions to maximize the overall ergodic sum rate. Utilizing the knowledge of distance information from a user to each distributed antenna (DA) port, we consider the pairings of each DA port and its supporting user to optimize the system performance. Then, we compute the ergodic sum rate for various transmission mode candidates and adopt a transmission selection scheme which chooses the best mode maximizing the ergodic sum rate among the mode candidates. In our proposed scheme, the number of mode candidates are greatly reduced compared to that of the ideal mode selection. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we will show the accuracy of our derivation for the ergodic sum rate expression. Moreover, simulation results with the pathloss modeling confirm that the proposed transmission selection scheme produces the average sum rate identical to the ideal mode selection with significantly reduced selection candidates.

Multi-Cell MIMO Downlink with Cell Cooperation and Fair Scheduling: a Large-System Limit Analysis

We consider the downlink of a cellular network with multiple cells and multi-antenna base stations, including a realistic distance-dependent pathloss model, clusters of cooperating cells, and general "fairness" requirements. Beyond Monte Carlo simulation, no efficient computation method to evaluate the ergodic throughput of such systems has been presented so far. We propose an analytic solution based on the combination of large random matrix results and convex optimization. The proposed method is computationally much more efficient than Monte Carlo simulation and provides surprisingly accurate approximations for the actual finite-dimensional systems, even for a small number of users and base station antennas. Numerical examples include 2-cell linear and three-sectored 7-cell planar layouts, with no inter-cell cooperation, sector cooperation, or full inter-cell cooperation.
