Quantum metamaterials with magnetic response at optical frequencies

We propose novel quantum antennas and metamaterials with strong magnetic response at optical frequencies. Our design is based on the arrangement of natural atoms with only electric dipole transition moments at distances smaller than a wavelength of light but much larger than their physical size. In particular, we show that an atomic dimer can serve as a magnetic antenna at its antisymmetric mode to enhance the decay rate of a magnetic transition in its vicinity by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, we study metasurfaces composed of atomic bilayers with and without cavities and show that they can fully reflect the electric and magnetic fields of light, thus, forming nearly perfect electric/magnetic mirrors. The proposed quantum metamaterials can be fabricated with available state-of-the-art technologies and promise several applications both in classical optics and quantum engineering.

Simultaneous Perfect Bending and Polarization Rotation of Electromagnetic Wavefront using Chiral Gradient Metasurfaces

We introduce chiral gradient metasurfaces that allow perfect transmission of all the incident wave into a desired direction and simultaneous perfect rotation of the polarization of the refracted wave with respect to the incident one. Besides using gradient polarization densities which provide bending of the refracted wave with respect to the incident one, using metasurface inclusions that are chiral allows the polarization of the refracted wave to be rotated. We suggest a possible realization of the proposed device by discretizing the required equivalent surface polarization densities realized by proper helical inclusions at each discretization point. By only using a single optically thin layer of chiral inclusions, we are able to unprecedentedly deflect a normal incident plane wave to a refracted plane wave at $45^{\circ}$ with $72\%$ power efficiency which is accompanied by a $90^{\circ}$ polarization rotation. The proposed concepts and design method may find practical applications in polarization rotation devices at microwaves as well as in optics, especially when the incident power is required to be deflected.

All-dielectric reciprocal bianisotropic nanoparticles

The study of high-index dielectric nanoparticles currently attracts a lot of attention. They do not suffer from absorption but promise to provide control on the properties of light comparable to plasmonic nanoparticles. To further advance the field, it is important to identify versatile dielectric nanoparticles with unconventional properties. Here, we show that breaking the symmetry of an all-dielectric nanoparticle leads to a geometrically tunable magneto-electric coupling, i.e. an omega-type bianisotropy. The suggested nanoparticle exhibits different backscatterings and, as an interesting consequence, different optical scattering forces for opposite illumination directions. An array of such nanoparticles provides different reflection phases when illuminated from opposite directions. With a proper geometrical tuning, this bianisotropic nanoparticle is capable of providing a $2π$ phase change in the reflection spectrum while possessing a rather large and constant amplitude. This allows creating reflectarrays with near-perfect transmission out of the resonance band due to the absence of an usually employed metallic screen.

Polarizability Tensor Calculation: Induced Local Charge and Current Distributions

We develop a semi-analytical approach to calculate the polarizability tensors of an arbitrary individual scatterer. The approach is based on the calculation of induced electric and/or magnetic dipole moments on the scatterer. By taking the advantages of the present approach, we calculate the individual polarizability tensors of an isolated scatterer in a homogeneous isotropic medium. Moreover, we obtain the polarizability tensors of scatterers located between two different isotropic media. Furthermore, due to the nature of the proposed method, we may determine the effective polarizability of a scatterer in a periodic array. To this end and for comparison reasons, we investigate two other methods for calculating effective polarizability tensors of scatterers in a two-dimensional periodic array. The proposed approach, in comparison to other reported approaches, is simpler, easily implemented, and does not require spherical harmonic expansion or complicated far-field calculations. We examine the validity of the proposed approach using several examples and compare the results with other approaches.
