Equilibria of vortex type Hamiltonians on closed surfaces

We prove the existence of critical points of vortex type Hamiltonians \[ H(p_1,\ldots, p_N) = \sum_{{i,j=1},{i\ne j}}^N Γ_iΓ_jG(p_i,p_j)+ψ(p_1,\dots,p_N) \] on a closed Riemannian surface $(Σ,g)$ which is not homeomorphic to the sphere or the projective plane. Here $G$ denotes the Green function of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in $Σ$, $ψ:Σ^N\to\mathbb{R}$ may be any function of class $C^1$, and $Γ_1,\dots,Γ_N\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}$ are the vorticities. The Kirchhoff-Routh Hamiltonian from fluid dynamics corresponds to $ψ= -\sum_{i=1}^N Γ_i^2h(p_i,p_i)$ where $h:Σ\timesΣ\to\mathbb{R}$ is the regular part of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We obtain critical points $p=(p_1,\dots,p_N)$ for arbitrary $N$ and vorticities $(Γ_1,\dots,Γ_N)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus V$ where $V$ is an explicitly given algebraic variety of codimension 1.

Classification and a priori estimates for the singular prescribing $Q$-curvature equation on 4-manifold

On $(M,g)$ a compact riemannian $4-$manifold we consider the prescribed $Q-$curvature equation defined on $M$ with finite singular sources. We first prove a classification theorem for singular Liouville equations defined on $\mathbb R^4$ and perform a concentration compactness analysis. Then we derive a quantization result for bubbling solutions and establish a priori estimate under the assumption that certain conformal invariant does not take some quantized values. Furthermore we prove a spherical Harnack inequality around singular sources provided their strength is not an integer. Such an inequality implies that in this case singular sources are \emph{isolated simple blow up points}.

Non simple blow ups for the Nirenberg problem on half spheres

In this paper we study a Nirenberg type problem on standard half spheres $(\mathbb{S}^n_+,g_0)$ consisting of finding conformal metrics of prescribed scalar curvature and zero boundary mean curvature on the boundary $\partial \mathbb{S}^n_+$. This problem amounts to solve the following boundary value problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent: \begin{equation*} (\mathcal{P}) \quad \begin{cases} -\D_{g_0} u \, + \, \frac{n(n-2)}{4} u \, = K \, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\, u > 0 & \mbox{in } \mathbb{S}^n_+, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}\, =\, 0 & \mbox{on } \partial \mathbb{S}^n_+. \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $K \in C^2(\mathbb{S}^n_+)$ is a positive function. We construct, under generic conditions on the function $K$, finite energy solutions of a subcritical approximation of $(\mathcal{P})$ on half spheres of dimension $n \geq 5$, which exhibit multiple blow up of \emph{cluster-type} at the same boundary point. These solutions may have zero or non zero weak limit and may develop clusters at different boundary points. Such blow up phenomena on half spheres drastically contrast with the case of the Nirenberg problem on spheres, where non simple blow up for finite energy subsolutions cannot occur and unveils an unexpected connection with vortex type problems arising in Euler equations in fluid dynamic and mean fields type equations in mathematical physics. We construct also, under suitable conditions on the restriction of $K$ on $\partial \mathbb{S}^n_+$, approximate solutions of arbitrarily large energy and Morse index

The Nirenberg problem on half spheres: A bubbling off analysis

In this paper we perform a refined blow up analysis of finite energy approximated solutions to a Nirenberg type problem on half spheres. The later consists of prescribing, under minimal boundary conditions, the scalar curvature to be a given function. In particular we give a precise location of blow up points and blow up rates. Such an analysis shows that the blow up picture of the Nirenberg problem on half spheres is far more complicated that in the case of closed spheres. Indeed besides the combination of interior and boundary blow ups, there are non simple blow up points for subcritical solutions having zero or nonzero weak limit. The formation of such non simple blow ups is governed by a vortex problem, unveiling an unexpected connection with Euler equations in fluid dynamic and mean fields type equations in mathematical physics.

The resonant boundary $Q$-curvature problem and boundary-weighted barycenters

Given a compact four-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary, we study the problem of existence of Riemannian metrics on $M$ conformal to $g$ with prescribed $Q$-curvature in the interior $\mathring{M}$ of $M$, and zero $T$-curvature and mean curvature on the boundary $\partial M$ of $M$. This geometric problem is equivalent to solving a fourth-order elliptic boundary value problem (BVP) involving the Paneitz operator with boundary conditions of Chang-Qing and Neumann operators. The corresponding BVP has a variational formulation but the corresponding variational problem, in the case under study, is not compact. To overcome such a difficulty we perform a systematic study, à la Bahri, of the so called {\it critical points at infinity}, compute their Morse indices, determine their contribution to the difference of topology between the sublevel sets of associated Euler-Lagrange functional and hence extend the full Morse Theory to this noncompact variational problem. To establish Morse inequalities we were led to investigate from the topological viewpoint the space of boundary-weighted barycenters of the underlying manifold, which arise in the description of the topology of very negative sublevel sets of the related functional. As an application of our approach we derive various existence results and provide a Poincaré-Hopf type criterium for the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem on compact four dimensional Riemannian manifolds with boundary.
