Conformal capacity and polycircular domains

We study numerical conformal mapping of multiply connected planar domains with boundaries consisting of unions of finitely many circular arcs, so called polycircular domains. We compute the conformal capacities of condensers defined by polycircular domains. Experimental error estimates are provided for the computed capacity and, when possible, the rate of convergence under refinement of discretisation is analysed. The main ingredients of the computation are two computational methods, on one hand the boundary integral equation method combined with the fast multipole method and on the other hand the $hp$-FEM method. The results obtained with these two methods agree with high accuracy.

Level sets of potential functions bisecting unbounded quadrilaterals

We study the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem for the Laplace equation in the complement of a bounded convex polygonal quadrilateral in the extended complex plane. The Dirichlet\,/\,Neumann conditions at opposite pairs of sides are $\{0,1\}$ and $\{0,0\},$ resp. The solution to this problem is a harmonic function in the unbounded complement of the polygon known as the \emph{potential function} of the quadrilateral. We compute the values of the potential function including its value at infinity.

Isoperimetric properties of condenser capacity

For compact subsets $E$ of the unit disk $ \mathbb{D}$ we study the capacity of the condenser ${\rm cap}( \mathbb{D},E)$ by means of set functionals defined in terms of hyperbolic geometry. In particular, we study experimentally the case of a hyperbolic triangle and arrive at the conjecture that of all triangles with the same hyperbolic area, the equilateral triangle has the least capacity.

PlgCirMap: A MATLAB toolbox for computing conformal mappings from polygonal multiply connected domains onto circular domains

This paper presents a MATLAB toolbox for computing the conformal mapping from a given polygonal multiply connected domain onto a circular multiply connected domain and its inverse. The toolbox can be used for multiply connected domains with high connectivity and complex geometry. It can be employed also for simply connected domains.

A fast numerical method for ideal fluid flow in domains with multiple stirrers

A collection of arbitrarily-shaped solid objects, each moving at a constant speed, can be used to mix or stir ideal fluid, and can give rise to interesting flow patterns. Assuming these systems of fluid stirrers are two-dimensional, the mathematical problem of resolving the flow field - given a particular distribution of any finite number of stirrers of specified shape and speed - can be formulated as a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We show that this Riemann-Hilbert problem can be solved numerically using a fast and accurate algorithm for any finite number of stirrers based around a boundary integral equation with the generalized Neumann kernel. Various systems of fluid stirrers are considered, and our numerical scheme is shown to handle highly multiply connected domains (i.e. systems of many fluid stirrers) with minimal computational expense.

Fast computation of the circular map

This paper presents a new numerical implementation of Koebe's iterative method for computing the circular map of bounded and unbounded multiply connected regions of connectivity $m$. The computational cost of the method is $O(mn\ln n)$ where $n$ is the number of nodes in the discretization of each boundary component. The accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are demonstrated by several numerical examples. These examples include regions with high connectivity, regions whose boundaries are closer together, and regions with piecewise smooth boundaries.

Fast solution of boundary integral equations with the generalized Neumann kernel

A fast method for solving boundary integral equations with the generalized Neumann kernel and the adjoint generalized Neumann kernel is presented. The method is based on discretizing the integral equations by the Nyström method with the trapezoidal rule to obtain $(m+1)n\times(m+1)n$ linear systems where $m+1$ is the multiplicity of the multiply connected domain and $n$ is the number of nodes in the discretization of each boundary component. The obtained linear systems are solved by the generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method. Each iteration of the GMRES method requires a matrix-vector product which can be computed using the Fast Multipole Method (FMM). The complexity of the presented method is $O((m+1)n\ln n)$ for the integral equation with the generalized Neumann kernel and $O((m+1)n)$ for the integral equation with the adjoint generalized Neumann kernel. The presented numerical results illustrate that the presented method gives accurate results even for domains with high connectivity, domains with piecewise smooth boundaries, and domains with close boundaries.

External Potential Flow Around Multiple Aerofoils

This chapter present a fats boundary integral equation method for numerical computing of uniform potential flow past multiple aerofoils. The presented fast multipole-based iterative solution procedure requires only $O(nm\ln n)$ operations where $m$ is the number of aerofoils and $n$ is the number of nodes in the discretization of each aerofoil's boundary. We demonstrate the performance of our methods on several numerical examples.

Numerical conformal mapping via a boundary integral equation with the adjoint generalized Neumann kernel

This paper presents a new uniquely solvable boundary integral equation for computing the conformal mapping, its derivative and its inverse from bounded multiply connected regions onto the five classical canonical slit regions. The integral equation is derived by reformulating the conformal mapping as an adjoint Riemann-Hilbert problem. From the adjoint Riemann-Hilbert problem, we derive a boundary integral equation with the adjoint generalized Neumann kernel for the derivative of the boundary correspondence function $θ'$. Only the right-hand side of the integral equation is different from a canonical region to another. The function $θ'$ is integrated to obtain the boundary correspondence function $θ$. The integration constants as well as the parameters of the canonical region are computed using the same uniquely solvable integral equation. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method.
