Free products from spinning and rotating families

The far-reaching work of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin and recent work of Clay-Mangahas-Margalit provide geometric approaches to the study of the normal closure of a subgroup (or a collection of subgroups)in an ambient group $G$. Their work gives conditions under which the normal closure in $G$ is a free product. In this paper we unify their results and simplify and significantly shorten the proof of the Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin theorem.

Groups acting on hyperbolic spaces -- a survey

This is a (very subjective) survey paper for nonspecialists covering group actions on Gromov hyperbolic spaces. The first section is about hyperbolic groups themselves, while the rest of the paper focuses on mapping class groups and $Out(F_n)$, and the way to understand their large scale geometry using their actions on various hyperbolic spaces constructed using projection complexes. This understanding for $Out(F_n)$ significantly lags behind that of mapping class groups and the paper ends with a few open questions.

Bounded cohomology with coefficients in uniformly convex Banach spaces

We show that for acylindrically hyperbolic groups $Γ$ (with no nontrivial finite normal subgroups) and arbitrary unitary representation $ρ$ of $Γ$ in a (nonzero) uniformly convex Banach space the vector space $H^2_b(Γ;ρ)$ is infinite dimensional. The result was known for the regular representations on $\ell^p(Γ)$ with $1<p<\infty$ by a different argument. But our result is new even for a non-abelian free group in this great generality for representations, and also the case for acylindrically hyperbolic groups follows as an application.

Constructing group actions on quasi-trees and applications to mapping class groups

A quasi-tree is a geodesic metric space quasi-isometric to a tree. We give a general construction of many actions of groups on quasi-trees. The groups we can handle include non-elementary (relatively) hyperbolic groups, rank 1 CAT(0) groups, mapping class groups and Out(Fn). As an application, we show that mapping class groups act on finite products of δ-hyperbolic spaces so that orbit maps are quasi-isometric embeddings. We prove that mapping class groups have finite asymptotic dimension.

Stable commutator length on mapping class groups

Let $Γ$ be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ)$ of a closed orientable surface $Σ$, possibly with punctures. We give a precise condition (in terms of the Nielsen-Thurston decomposition) when an element $g\inΓ$ has positive stable commutator length. In addition, we show that in these situations the stable commutator length, if nonzero, is uniformly bounded away from 0. The method works for certain subgroups of infinite index as well and we show $scl$ is uniformly positive on the nontrivial elements of the Torelli group. The proofs use our earlier construction in the paper "Constructing group actions on quasi-trees and applications to mapping class groups" of group actions on quasi-trees.

Some groups of mapping classes not realized by diffeomorphisms

Let S be a closed surface of genus g >= 2 and z in S a marked point. We prove that the subgroup of the mapping class group Map(S,z) corresponding to the fundamental group pi_1(S,z) of the closed surface does not lift to the group of diffeomorphisms of S fixing z. As a corollary, we show that the Atiyah-Kodaira surface bundles admit no invariant flat connection, and obtain another proof of Morita's non-lifting theorem.

Asymmetry of Outer Space

We study the asymmetry of the Lipschitz metric d on Outer space. We introduce an (asymmetric) Finsler norm that induces d. There is an Out(F_n)-invariant potential Ψon Outer space such that when the Lipschitz norm is corrected by the derivative of Ψ, the resulting norm is quasisymmetric. As an application, we give new proofs of two theorems of Handel-Mosher, that the Lipschitz metric is quasi-symmetric when restricted to a thick part of Outer space, and that there is a uniform bound, depending only on the rank, on the ratio of logs of growth rates of any irreducible outer automorphism f in Out(F_n) and its inverse.

Filling boundaries of coarse manifolds in semisimple and solvable arithmetic groups

We provide partial results towards a conjectural generalization of a theorem of Lubotzky-Mozes-Raghunathan for arithmetic groups (over number fields or function fields) that implies, in low dimensions, both polynomial isoperimetric inequalities and finiteness properties. As a tool in our proof, we establish polynomial isoperimetric inequalities and finiteness properties for certain solvable groups that appear as subgroups of parabolic groups in semisimple groups, thus generalizing a theorem of Bux. We also develop a precise version of reduction theory for arithmetic groups whose proof is, for the most part, independent of whether the underlying global field is a number field or a function field.

Geometry of Integral Binary Hermitian Forms

We generalize Conway's approach to integral binary quadratic forms on Q to study integral binary hermitian forms on quadratic imaginary extensions of Q. In Conway's case, an indefinite form that doesn't represent 0 determines a line ("river") in the spine T associated with SL(2,Z) in the hyperbolic plane. In our generalization, such a form determines a plane ("ocean") in Mendoza's spine associated with the corresponding Bianchi group SL(2,A) in hyperbolic 3-space.

Non-positively curved aspects of Artin groups of finite type

Artin groups of finite type are not as well understood as braid groups. This is due to the additional geometric properties of braid groups coming from their close connection to mapping class groups. For each Artin group of finite type, we construct a space (simplicial complex) analogous to Teichmueller space that satisfies a weak nonpositive curvature condition and also a space "at infinity" analogous to the space of projective measured laminations. Using these constructs, we deduce several group-theoretic properties of Artin groups of finite type that are well-known in the case of braid groups.
