One Loop to Rule Them All: Eight and Nine Dimensional String Vacua from Junctions

String and 5-brane junctions are shown to succinctly classify all known 8d ${\cal N}$=1 string vacua. This requires an extension of the description for ordinary $[p,q]$-7-branes to consistently include O7$^+$-planes, which then naturally encodes the dynamics of $\mathfrak{sp}_n$ gauge algebras, including their higher-form center symmetries. Central to this analysis are loop junctions, i.e., strings/5-branes which encircle stacks of 7-branes and O7$^+$'s. Loop junctions further signal the appearance of affine symmetries of emergent 9d descriptions at the 8d moduli space's boundaries. Such limits reproduce all 9d string vacua, including the two disconnected rank (1,1) moduli components.

Snowmass White Paper: String Theory and Particle Physics

We review recent developments and outstanding questions regarding connecting the top-down UV complete physical framework of string theory with the observed physics of the Standard Model and beyond the Standard Model physics, emphasizing the global nonperturbative framework of F-theory and general lessons from UV physics. This paper, prepared for the TF01 conveners of the Snowmass 2022 process, provides a brief synopsis of this important area, focusing on ongoing developments and opportunities.

Flavor Symmetries and Automatic Enhancement in the 6d Supergravity Swampland

We argue for the quantum-gravitational inconsistency of certain 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theories, whose anomaly-free gauge algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and hypermultiplet spectrum $M$ were observed in arxiv:2012.01437 to be realizable only as part of a larger gauge sector $(\mathfrak{g}' \supset \mathfrak{g}, M' \supset M)$ in F-theory. To detach any reference to a string theoretic method of construction, we utilize flavor symmetries to provide compelling reasons why the vast majority of such $(\mathfrak{g},M)$ theories are not compatible with quantum gravity constraints, and how the "automatic enhancement" to $(\mathfrak{g}', M')$ remedies this. In the first class of models, with $\mathfrak{g}' = \mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{h}$, we show that there exists an unbroken flavor symmetry $\mathfrak{h}$ acting on the matter $M$, which, if ungauged, would violate the No-Global-Symmetries Hypothesis. This argument also applies to 1-form center symmetries, which govern the gauge group topology and massive states in representations different than those of massless states. In a second class, we find that $\mathfrak{g}$ is incompatible with the flavor symmetry of certain BPS strings that must exist by the Completeness Hypothesis.

Higher-Form Symmetries and Their Anomalies in M-/F-Theory Duality

We explore higher-form symmetries of M- and F-theory compactified on elliptic fibrations, determined by the topology of their asymptotic boundaries. The underlying geometric structures are shown to be equivalent to known characterizations of the gauge group topology in F-theory via Mordell--Weil torsion and string junctions. We further study dimensional reductions of the 11d Chern--Simons term in the presence of torsional boundary $G_4$-fluxes, which encode background gauge fields of center 1-form symmetries in the lower-dimensional effective gauge theory. We find contributions that can be interpreted as 't Hooft anomalies involving the 1-form symmetry which originate from a fractionalization of the instanton number of non-Abelian gauge theories in F-/M-theory compactifications to 8d/7d and 6d/5d.

Constraints on Standard Model Constructions in F-theory

We argue that the following three statements cannot all be true: (i) our vacuum is a type IIB / F-theory vacuum at moderate-to-large $h^{1,1}$, (ii) the $α'$-expansion is controlled via the supergravity approximation, à la the KKLT and LVS scenarios, and (iii) there are no additional gauged sectors from seven-branes. Since nearly all known globally consistent F-theory models with the exact chiral spectrum of the Standard Model and gauge coupling unification occur at moderate $h^{1,1}$, this finding calls for new moduli stabilization scenarios or/and a rich seven-brane dark sector.

Yukawa Hierarchies in Global F-theory Models

We argue that global F-theory compactifications to four dimensions generally exhibit higher rank Yukawa matrices from multiple geometric contributions known as Yukawa points. The holomorphic couplings furthermore have large hierarchies for generic complex structure moduli. Unlike local considerations, the compact setup realizes these features all through geometry, and requires no instanton corrections. As an example, we consider a concrete toy model with $SU(5) \times U(1)$ gauge symmetry. From the geometry, we find two Yukawa points for the ${\bf 10}_{-2} \, \bar{\bf 5}_6 \, \bar{\bf 5}_{-4}$ coupling, producing a rank two Yukawa matrix. Our methods allow us to track all complex structure dependencies of the holomorphic couplings and study the ratio numerically. This reveals hierarchies of ${\cal O}(10^5)$ and larger on a full-dimensional subspace of the moduli space.

String Consistency, Heavy Exotics, and the 750 GeV Diphoton Excess at the LHC: Addendum

We study models with heavy exotics that account for the LHC $750$ GeV diphoton excess in light of current vector-like quark bounds. Utilizing only exotics that may appear in three-stack and four-stack D-brane models, we show that a narrow width diphoton excess can be accounted for while evading existing bounds if multiple exotics are added, with vector-like leptons of mass $M_L\lesssim 375$ GeV and vector-like quarks with masses up to $\simeq 3$ TeV. However, a large width $(Γ/M \sim 0.06)$, as suggested by the ATLAS data, cannot be easily accommodated in this framework. Renormalization group equations with GUT-scale boundary conditions show that these supersymmetric models are perturbative and stable. Type IIA compactifications on toroidal orbifolds allow for $O(10)$ Yukawa couplings in the ultraviolet.

General U(1)xU(1) F-theory Compactifications and Beyond: Geometry of unHiggsings and novel Matter Structure

We construct the general form of an F-theory compactification with two U(1) factors based on a general elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifold with Mordell-Weil group of rank two. This construction produces broad classes of models with diverse matter spectra, including many that are not realized in earlier F-theory constructions with U(1)xU(1) gauge symmetry. Generic U(1)xU(1) models can be related to a Higgsed non-Abelian model with gauge group SU(2)xSU(2)xSU(3), SU(2)^3xSU(3), or a subgroup thereof. The nonlocal horizontal divisors of the Mordell-Weil group are replaced with local vertical divisors associated with the Cartan generators of non-Abelian gauge groups from Kodaira singularities. We give a global resolution of codimension two singularities of the Abelian model; we identify the full anomaly free matter content, and match it to the unHiggsed non-Abelian model. The non-Abelian Weierstrass model exhibits a new algebraic description of the singularities in the fibration that results in the first explicit construction of matter in the symmetric representation of SU(3). This matter is realized on double point singularities of the discriminant locus. The construction suggests a generalization to U(1)^k factors with k>2, which can be studied by Higgsing theories with larger non-Abelian gauge groups.

Origin of Abelian Gauge Symmetries in Heterotic/F-theory Duality

We study aspects of heterotic/F-theory duality for compactifications with Abelian gauge symmetries. We consider F-theory on general Calabi-Yau manifolds with a rank one Mordell-Weil group of rational sections. By rigorously performing the stable degeneration limit in a class of toric models, we derive both the Calabi-Yau geometry as well as the spectral cover describing the vector bundle in the heterotic dual theory. We carefully investigate the spectral cover employing the group law on the elliptic curve in the heterotic theory. We find in explicit examples that there are three different classes of heterotic duals that have U(1) factors in their low energy effective theories: split spectral covers describing bundles with S(U(m) x U(1)) structure group, spectral covers containing torsional sections that seem to give rise to bundles with SU(m) x Z_k structure group and bundles with purely non-Abelian structure groups having a centralizer in E_8 containing a U(1) factor. In the former two cases, it is required that the elliptic fibration on the heterotic side has a non-trivial Mordell-Weil group. While the number of geometrically massless U(1)'s is determined entirely by geometry on the F-theory side, on the heterotic side the correct number of U(1)'s is found by taking into account a Stuckelberg mechanism in the lower-dimensional effective theory. In geometry, this corresponds to the condition that sections in the two half K3 surfaces that arise in the stable degeneration limit of F-theory can be glued together globally.

Thermodynamics of Asymptotically Conical Geometries

We study the thermodynamical properties of a class of asymptotically conical (AC) geometries known as "subtracted geometries". We derive the mass and angular momentum from the regulated Komar Integral and the Hawking-Horowitz prescription and show that they are equivalent. By deriving the asymptotic charges we show that the Smarr formula and the first law of thermodynamics hold. We also propose an analog of Christodulou-Ruffini inequality. The analysis can be generalized to other AC geometries.

Three-Family Particle Physics Models from Global F-theory Compactifications

We construct four-dimensional, globally consistent F-theory models with three chiral generations, whose gauge group and matter representations coincide with those of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, the Pati-Salam Model and the Trinification Model. These models result from compactification on toric hypersurface fibrations $X$ with the choice of base $\mathbb{P}^3$. We observe that the F-theory conditions on the $G_4$-flux restrict the number of families to be at least three. We comment on the phenomenology of the models, and for Pati-Salam and Trinification models discuss the Higgsing to the Standard Model. A central point of this work is the construction of globally consistent $G_4$-flux. For this purpose we compute the vertical cohomology $H_V^{(2,2)}(X)$ in each case and solve the conditions imposed by matching the M- and F-theoretical 3D Chern-Simons terms. We explicitly check that the expressions found for the $G_4$-flux allow for a cancelation of D3-brane tadpoles. We also use the integrality of 3D Chern-Simons terms to ensure that our $G_4$-flux solutions are adequately quantized.

Black Holes with Intrinsic Spin

We analyze the general black hole solutions to the four dimensional STU model recently constructed by Chow and Compere. We define a dilute gas limit where the black holes can be interpreted as excited states of an extremal ground state. In this limit we express the black hole entropy and the excitation energy in terms of physical quantities with no need for parametric charges. We discuss a dual microscopic CFT description that incorporates all electric and magnetic charges. This description is recovered geometrically by identification of a near horizon BTZ region. We construct the subtracted geometry with no restrictions on charges by analyzing the scalar wave equation in the full geometry. We determine the matter sources that support the subtracted geometry by studying a scaling limit and show that the general geometry permits a dilute gas description with parameters that we specify.

Entanglement entropy of subtracted geometry black holes

We compute the entanglement entropy of minimally coupled scalar fields on subtracted geometry black hole backgrounds, focusing on the logarithmic corrections. We notice that matching between the entanglement entropy of original black holes and their subtracted counterparts is only at the order of the area term. The logarithmic correction term is not only different but also, in general, changes sign in the subtracted case. We apply Harrison transformations to the original black holes and find out the choice of the Harrison parameters for which the logarithmic corrections vanish.

Vacuum Polarization of STU Black Holes and their Subtracted Geometry Limit

We study the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of four-charge STU black holes. We compare the results for the standard asymptotically flat black holes and for the black holes obtained in the "subtracted limit", both in the general static case and at the horizon pole for the general rotating case. The original and the subtracted results are identical only in the BPS limit, and have opposite sign in the extremal Kerr limit. We also compute the vacuum polarization on the static solutions that interpolate between both the original and the subtracted case through a solution-generating transformation and show that the vacuum polarization stays positive throughout the interpolating solution. In the Appendix we provide a closed-form solution for the Green's function on general (static or rotating) subtracted black hole geometries.

Elliptic Fibrations with Rank Three Mordell-Weil Group: F-theory with U(1) x U(1) x U(1) Gauge Symmetry

We analyze general F-theory compactifications with U(1) x U(1) x U(1) Abelian gauge symmetry by constructing the general elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with a rank three Mordell-Weil group of rational sections. The general elliptic fiber is shown to be a complete intersection of two non-generic quadrics in P^3 and resolved elliptic fibrations are obtained by embedding the fiber as the generic Calabi-Yau complete intersection into Bl_3 P^3, the blow-up of P^3 at three points. For a fixed base B, there are finitely many Calabi-Yau elliptic fibrations. Thus, F-theory compactifications on these Calabi-Yau manifolds are shown to be labeled by integral points in reflexive polytopes constructed from the nef-partition of Bl_3 P^3. We determine all 14 massless matter representations to six and four dimensions by an explicit study of the codimension two singularities of the elliptic fibration. We obtain three matter representations charged under all three U(1)-factors, most notably a tri-fundamental representation. The existence of these representations, which are not present in generic perturbative Type II compactifications, signifies an intriguing universal structure of codimension two singularities of the elliptic fibrations with higher rank Mordell-Weil groups. We also compute explicitly the corresponding 14 multiplicities of massless hypermultiplets of a six-dimensional F-theory compactification for a general base B.

F-Theory Compactifications with Multiple U(1)-Factors: Addendum

The purpose of this note is to extend the results obtained in [arXiv:1303.6970] in two ways. First, the six-dimensional F-theory compactifications with U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetry on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds, constructed as a hypersurface in $dP_2$ fibered over the base $B=\mathbb{P}^2$ [arXiv:1303.6970], are generalized to Calabi-Yau threefolds elliptically fibered over an arbitrary two-dimensional base B. While the representations of the matter hypermultiplets remain unchanged, their multiplicities are calculated for an arbitrary B. Second, for a specific non-generic subset of such Calabi-Yau threefolds we engineer SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetry. We summarize the hypermultiplet matter representations, which remain the same as for the choice of the base $B=\mathbb{P}^2$ [arXiv:1306.3987], and determine their multiplicities for an arbitrary B. We also verify that the obtained spectra cancel anomalies both for U(1) x U(1) and SU(5) x U(1) x U(1).

Conformal Symmetry for Black Holes in Four Dimensions

We show that the asymptotic boundary conditions of general asymptotically flat black holes in four dimensions can be modified such that a conformal symmetry emerges. The black holes with the asymptotic geometry removed in this manner satisfy the equations of motion of minimal supergravity in five dimensions. We develop evidence that a two dimensional CFT dual of general black holes in four dimensions account for their black hole entropy.

String Constraints on Discrete Symmetries in MSSM Type II Quivers

We study the presence of discrete gauge symmetries in D-brane semi-realistic compactifications. After establishing the constraints on the transformation behaviour of the chiral matter for the presence of a discrete gauge symmetry we perform a systematic search for discrete gauge symmetries within local semi-realistic D-brane realizations, based on four D-brane stacks, of the MSSM and the MSSM with three right-handed neutrinos. The systematic search reveals that Proton hexality, a discrete symmetry which ensures the absence of R-parity violating terms as well as the absence of dangerous dimension 5 proton decay operators, is only rarely realized. Moreover, none of the semi-realistic local D-brane configurations exhibit any family dependent discrete gauge symmetry.

Supersymmetric Standard Models, Flux Compactification and Moduli Stabilization

Based on the T-dual constructions of supersymmetric intersecting D6-models on Z_2 x Z_2 orientifolds, whose electroweak sector is parallel with the orientifold planes with Sp(2f)_L x Sp(2f)_R gauge symmetry (hep-th/0407178), we derive and classify Standard Model-like vacua with RR and NSNS fluxes, which stabilize toroidal complex structure moduli and the dilaton. We find consistent four-family (f=4) and two-family (f=2) models with one- and two-units of the quantized flux, respectively. Such models typically possess additional gauge group factors with negative beta functions and may lead, via gaugino condensation, to stabilization of toroidal Kahler moduli. These models have chiral exotics.

Conformal Field Theory Couplings for Intersecting D-branes on Orientifolds

We present a conformal field theory calculation of four-point and three-point correlation functions for the bosonic twist fields arising at the intersections of D-branes wrapping (supersymmetric) homology cycles of Type II orientifold compactifications. Both the quantum contribution from local excitations at the intersections and the world-sheet disk instanton corrections are computed. As a consequence we obtain the complete expression for the Yukawa couplings of chiral fermions with the Higgs fields. The four-point correlation functions in turn lead to the determination of the four-point couplings in the effective theory, and may be of phenomenological interest.

Microscopics of Rotating Black Holes: Entropy and Greybody Factors

We review the status of microscopic counting of rotating black hole degrees of freedom. We present two complementary approaches which both utilize the near-horizon geometry and precisely reproduce the Bekenstein Hawking entropy for near-extreme rotating black holes in D=4 and D=5. The first one, proposed by Strominger, is applicable for the Ramond-Ramond sector and relies on the correspondence between the near-horizon geometry and the conformal field theory on its boundary. The second one (somewhat more heuristic), employs the conformal sigma-model in the Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz sector and accounts for the black hole microstates by counting the small scale oscillations of the dyonic string there. We also present the wave equation for the minimally coupled scalars for such rotating black hole background, and discuss its implication for the greybody factors. The results are illustrated for the prototype D=5 rotating black hole.

Solitonic Strings and BPS Saturated Dyonic Black Holes

We consider a six-dimensional solitonic string solution described by a conformal chiral null model with non-trivial $N=4$ superconformal transverse part. It can be interpreted as a five-dimensional dyonic solitonic string wound around a compact fifth dimension. The conformal model is regular with the short-distance (`throat') region equivalent to a WZW theory. At distances larger than the compactification scale the solitonic string reduces to a dyonic static spherically-symmetric black hole of toroidally compactified heterotic string. The new four-dimensional solution is parameterised by five charges, saturates the Bogomol'nyi bound and has nontrivial dilaton-axion field and moduli fields of two-torus. When acted by combined T- and S-duality transformations it serves as a generating solution for all the static spherically-symmetric BPS-saturated configurations of the low-energy heterotic string theory compactified on six-torus. Solutions with regular horizons have the global space-time structure of extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black holes with the non-zero thermodynamic entropy which depends only on conserved (quantised) charge vectors. The independence of the thermodynamic entropy on moduli and axion-dilaton couplings strongly suggests that it should have a microscopic interpretation as counting degeneracy of underlying string configurations. This interpretation is supported by arguments based on the corresponding six-dimensional conformal field theory. The expression for the level of the WZW theory describing the throat region implies a renormalisation of the string tension by a product of magnetic charges, thus relating the entropy and the number of oscillations of the solitonic string in compact directions.

STATIC FOUR-DIMENSIONAL ABELIAN BLACK HOLES IN KALUZA-KLEIN THEORY

Static, four-dimensional (4-d) black holes (BH's) in ($4+n$)-d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory with Abelian isometry and diagonal internal metric have at most one electric ($Q$) and one magnetic ($P$) charges, which can either come from the same $U(1)$-gauge field (corresponding to BH's in effective 5-d KK theory) or from different ones (corresponding to BH's with $U(1)_M\times U(1)_E$ isometry of an effective 6-d KK theory). In the latter case, explicit non-extreme solutions have the global space-time of Schwarzschild BH's, finite temperature, and non-zero entropy. In the extreme (supersymmetric) limit the singularity becomes null, the temperature saturates the upper bound $T_H=1/4π\sqrt{|QP|}$, and entropy is zero. A class of KK BH's with constrained charge configurations, exhibiting a continuous electric-magnetic duality, are generated by global $SO(n)$ transformations on the above classes of the solutions.
