Adaptive Internal Models: Explaining the Oculomotor System and the Cerebellum

We propose a new model of the oculomotor system, particularly the vestibulo-ocular reflex, gaze fixation, and smooth pursuit. Our key insight is to exploit recent developments on adaptive internal models. The outcome is a simple model that includes the interactions between the brainstem and the cerebellum and that recovers behaviors from more than 15 oculomotor experiments. In addition, we put forward a thesis that the cerebellum embodies internal models of all persistent, exogenous reference and disturbance signals acting on the body and observable through the error signals it receives.

Safe and Robust Robot Maneuvers Based on Reach Control

In this paper, we investigate the synthesis of piecewise affine feedback controllers to address the problem of safe and robust controller design in robotics based on high-level controls specifications. The methodology is based on formulating the problem as a collection of reach control problems on a polytopic state space. Reach control has so far only been developed in theory and has not been tested experimentally on a real system before. Using a quadrocopter as our experimental platform, we show that these theoretical tools can achieve fast, albeit safe and robust maneuvers. In contrast to most traditional control techniques, the reach control approach does not require a predefined open-loop reference trajectory or spacial path. Experimental results on a quadrocopter show the effectiveness and robustness of this control approach. In a proof-of-concept demonstration, the reach controller is implemented in one translational direction while the other degrees of freedom are stabilized by separate controllers.

Some Results on an Affine Obstruction to Reach Control

This ArXiv paper is a supplement to [7] and contains proofs of preliminary claims omitted in [7] for lack of space. The paper deals with exploring a necessary condition for solvability of the Reach Control Problem (RCP) using affine feedback. The goal of the RCP is to drive the states of an affine control system to a given facet of a simplex without first exiting the simplex through other facets. In analogy to the problem of a topological obstruction to the RCP for continuous state feedback studied in [7], this paper formulates the problem of an affine obstruction and solves it in the case of two- and three-dimensional systems. An appealing geometric cone condition is identified as the new necessary condition.

Reach Control on Simplices by Piecewise Affine Feedback

We study the reach control problem for affine systems on simplices, and the focus is on cases when it is known that the problem is not solvable by continuous state feedback. We examine from a geometric viewpoint the structural properties of the system which make continuous state feedbacks fail. This structure is encoded by so-called reach control indices, which are defined and developed in the paper. Based on these indices, we propose a subdivision algorithm and associated piecewise affine feedback. The method is shown to solve the reach control problem in all remaining cases, assuming it is solvable by open-loop controls.
