Excluding Hypothetical Light Boson Interpretation of Yb King Plot Nonlinearity with the ${}^1S_0 \leftrightarrow {}^3P_2$ Isotope Shift Measurement

We present precision spectroscopy and isotope shift measurement of the ${}^1S_0 \leftrightarrow {}^3P_2$ clock transition in neutral ytterbium ($\mathrm{Yb}$) atoms. By revealing a magic wavelength at $905.4(2)$ nm, we successfully achieve the atomic spectrum narrower than $100$ Hz. The interleaved clock operation between isotopes allows us to determine isotope shifts of four bosonic isotope pairs at Hz-level uncertainties, which is combined with those of other four ultra-narrow transitions in $\mathrm{Yb}$ and $\mathrm{Yb}^+$ to construct the King plot. Importantly, the new isotope shift data reported in this work is a key to exclude the possibility of attributing the observed nonlinearity of the three-dimensional King plot solely to the new physics, while the previous works rely on the other terrestrial bound set by the neutron scattering and $(g-2)_e$ measurements. This work paves the way for the effective use of precision isotope shift data in the King plot analysis and stimulates further measurements in $\mathrm{Yb}$ and other elements.

Generalized von Mangoldt surfaces of revolution and asymmetric two-spheres of revolution with simple cut locus structure

It was known that if the Gaussian curvature function along each meridian on a surface of revolution $(R^2, dr^2+m(r)^2dθ^2)$ is decreasing, then the cut locus of each point of $θ^{-1}(0)$ is empty or a subarc of the opposite meridian $θ^{-1}(π).$ Such a surface is called a von Mangoldt's surface of revolution. A surface of revolution $(R^2, dr^2+m(r)^2dθ^2)$ is called a generalized von Mangoldt surface of revolution if the cut locus of each point of $θ^{-1}(0)$ is empty or a subarc of the opposite meridian $θ^{-1}(π).$ For example, the surface of revolution $(R^2, dr^2+m_0(r)^2dθ^2),$ where $m_0(x):=x/(1+x^2),$ has the same cut locus structure as above and the cut locus of each point in $r^{-1}( (0, \infty ) )$ is nonempty. Note that the Gaussian curvature function is not decreasing along a meridian for this surface. In this article, we give sufficient conditions for a surface of revolution $(R^2, dr^2+m(r)^2dθ^2)$ to be a generalized von Mangoldt surface of revolution. Moreover, we prove that for any surface of revolution with finite total curvature $c,$ there exists a generalized von Mangoldt surface of revolution with the same total curvature $c$ such that the Gaussian curvature function along a meridian is not monotone on $[a,\infty)$ for any $a>0.$

Observation of non-linearity of generalized King plot in the search for new boson

We measure isotope shifts for neutral Yb isotopes on an ultranarrow optical clock transition $^{1}\text{S}_{0}-^{3}\text{P}_{0}$ with an accuracy of a few Hz. The part-per-billion precise measurement was possible by loading the ultracold atoms into a three-dimensional magic-wavelength optical lattice and alternately interrogating the isotope pairs, thus minimizing the effects due to the optical lattice light-shift and inter-atomic interaction as well as the drifts of a clock laser frequency and a magnetic field. The determined isotope shifts, combined with one of the recently reported isotope-shift measurements of Yb$^+$ on two optical transitions, allow us to construct the King plots. Extremely large nonlinearity with the corresponding $χ^2$ on the order of $10^4$ is revealed, and is not explained by a quadratic field shift. We further carry out the generalized King plot for three optical transitions so that we can eliminate the contribution arising from a higher-order effect within the Standard Model which might explain the observed nonlinearity of King plots for two transitions. Our analysis of the generalized King plot shows a deviation from linearity at the 3$σ$ level, indicating that there exist at least two higher order contributions in the measured isotope shifts. Then, under the reasonable assumption to attribute them to higher-order field shifts within the Standard Model, we obtain the upper bound of the product of the couplings for a new boson mediating a force between electrons, and neutrons $|y_ey_n|/(\hbar c)< 1\times10^{-10}$ for the mass less than 1 keV with the 95% confidence level is derived, providing an important step towards probing new physics via isotope-shift spectroscopy.

Externally triggered coherent two-photon emission from hydrogen molecules

We report coherent enhancement of two-photon emission from the excited vibrational state of molecular hydrogen triggered by irradiating mid-infrared pulses externally. We previously observed the two-photon emission triggered by the internally generated fourth Stokes photons. By injecting independent mid-infrared pulses externally, it is possible to control experimental parameters and investigate the mechanism in more detail. In this article, we describe the two-photon emission using the external trigger pulses. Its spectrum and dependence on the energy and timing of the trigger pulse are presented along with numerical simulations based on the Maxwell-Bloch equations. The measured number of emitted photons is 6 10^11 photons/pulse and the resulting enhancement factor from the spontaneous emission is more than 10^18. This value is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the previous experiment. External control of emission process is expected to be essential for observation of weaker process of radiative emission of neutrino pair.

Lepton flavor violation in the supersymmetric seesaw model after the LHC 8 TeV run

We study the lepton flavor violation in the supersymmetric seesaw model taking into account recent experimental improvements, especially for the Higgs boson mass measurement, direct searches of superpartners and the rare decay of B_s -> mu+ mu- at the LHC, the neutrino mixing angle of theta_{13} at the neutrino experiments, and the search of mu -> e gamma at the MEG experiment. We obtain the latest constraints on the parameters in the supersymmetry breaking terms and study the effect on the lepton flavor violating decays of tau -> mu gamma and mu -> e gamma. In particular, we consider two kinds of assumption on the structures in the Majorana mass matrix and the neutrino Yukawa matrix. In the case of the Majorana mass matrix proportional to the unit matrix, allowing non-vanishing CP violating parameters in the neutrino Yukawa matrix, we find that the branching ratio of tau -> mu gamma can be larger than 10^{-9} within the improved experimental limit of mu -> e gamma. We also consider the neutrino Yukawa matrix that includes the mixing only in the second and third generations, and find that a larger branching ratio of tau -> mu gamma than 10^{-9} is possible with satisfying the recent constraints.

Observation of coherent two-photon emission from the first vibrationally-excited state of hydrogen molecules

In this paper, we describe an experiment which was conducted to explore the macro-coherent amplification mechanism using a two-photon emission process from the first vibrationally-excited state of para-hydrogen molecule. Large coherence in the initial state was prepared by the adiabatic Raman population transfer method, and the lowest Stokes sideband was used as a trigger field. We observed the coherent two-photon emission consistent with the expectation of the paired super-radiance master equation.

Probing New Physics with $q^2$ distributions in $\bar{B} \to D^{(*)} τ\barν$

Recent experimental results for the ratios of the branching fractions of the decays $\bar{B} \to D^{(*)} τ\barν$ and $\bar{B} \to D^{(*)} μ\barν$ came as a surprise and lead to a discussion of possibility of testing New Physics beyond the Standard Model through these modes. We show that these decay channels can provide us with good constraints on New Physics and several New Physics cases are favored by the present experimental data. In order to discriminate various New Physics scenarios, we examine the $q^2$ distributions and estimate the sensitivity of this potential measurement at the SuperKEKB/Belle II experiment.

Right-handed current with $CP$ violation in the $b\to u$ transition

We show that the experimental data on $|V_{ub}|$ in various $B$ meson decay modes suggest a possibility of $CP$-violating right-handed current in the $b\to u$ transition. Its consequences in $B\toππ,\,ρρ,\,DK$ are examined and compared with experimental results in order to clarify possible signals of the $CP$ violation in these decay modes. As a result, we find that the $CP$-violating right-handed current is consistent with current experimental data. Its signal might be discovered by precise $CP$ measurements in future experiments.

A Toponogov type triangle comparison theorem in Finsler geometry

The aim of this article is to establish a Toponogov type triangle comparison theorem for Finsler manifolds, in the manner of radial curvature geometry. We consider the situation that the radial flag curvature is bounded below by the radial curvature function of a non-compact surface of revolution, the edge opposite to the base point is contained in a Berwald-like region, and that the Finsler metric is convex enough in the radial directions in that region.

New physics in the weak interaction of $\bar B\to D^{(*)}τ\barν$

Recent experimental results on exclusive semi-tauonic B meson decays, B -> D(*) tau nu, showing sizable deviations from the standard model prediction, suggest a new physics in which the structure of the relevant weak charged interaction may differ from that of the standard model. We study the exclusive semi-tauonic B decays in a model-independent manner using the most general set of four-Fermi interactions in order to clarify possible structures of the charged current in new physics. It turns out that correlations among observables including tau and D* polarizations and q^2 distributions are useful to distinguish possible new physics operators. Further, we investigate some interesting models to exhibit the advantage of our model-independent analysis. As a result, we find that two Higgs doublet models without tree-level FCNC and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with R-parity violation are unlikely to explain the present experimental data, while two Higgs doublet models with FCNC and a leptoquark model are consistent with the data.

Neutrino Spectroscopy with Atoms and Molecules

We give a comprehensive account of our proposed experimental method of using atoms or molecules in order to measure parameters of neutrinos still undetermined; the absolute mass scale, the mass hierarchy pattern (normal or inverted), the neutrino mass type (Majorana or Dirac), and the CP violating phases including Majorana phases. There are advantages of atomic targets, due to the closeness of available atomic energies to anticipated neutrino masses, over nuclear target experiments. Disadvantage of using atomic targets, the smallness of rates, is overcome by the macro-coherent amplification mechanism. The atomic or molecular process we use is a cooperative deexcitation of a collective body of atoms in a metastable level |e> emitting a neutrino pair and a photon; |e> -> |g> + gamma + nu_i nu_j where nu_i's are neutrino mass eigenstates. The macro-coherence is developed by trigger laser irradiation. We discuss aspects of the macro-coherence development by setting up the master equation for the target quantum state and propagating electric field. With a choice of heavy target atom or molecule such as Xe or I_2 that has a large M1 x E1 matrix element between |e> and |g>, we show that one can determine three neutrino masses along with the mass hierarchy pattern by measuring the photon spectral shape. If one uses a target of available energy of a fraction of 1 eV, Majorana CP phases may be determined. Our master equation, when applied to E1 x E1 transition such as pH_2 vibrational transition Xv=1 -> 0, can describe explosive PSR events in which most of the energy stored in |e> is released within a few nanoseconds. The present paper is intended to be self-contained explaining some details related theoretical works in the past, and further reports new simulations and our ongoing experimental efforts of the project to realize the neutrino mass spectroscopy using atoms/molecules.

The cut locus and distance function from a closed subset of a Finsler manifold

We characterize the differentiable points of the distance function from a closed subset $N$ of an arbitrary dimensional Finsler manifold in terms of the number of $N$-segments. In the case of a 2-dimensional Finsler manifold, we prove the structure theorem of the cut locus of a closed subset $N$, namely that it is a local tree, it is made of countably many rectifiable Jordan arcs except for the endpoints of the cut locus and that an intrinsic metric can be introduced in the cut locus and its intrinsic and induced topologies coincide. We should point out that these are new results even for Riemannian manifolds.

The topology of an open manifold with radial curvature bounded from below by a model surface with finite total curvature and examples of model surfaces

We will construct surfaces of revolution with finite total curvature whose Gauss curvatures are not bounded. Such a surface of revolution is employed as a reference surface of comparison theorems in radial curvature geometry. Moreover, we will prove that a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold M is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with boundary, if the manifold M is not less curved than a non-compact model surface of revolution, and if the total curvature of the model surface is finite and less than $2π$. Hence, in the first result mentioned above, we may treat a much wider class of metrics than that of a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded from below by a constant.

Collider signatures of the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification

Collider signatures of the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped space are explored. Gauge couplings of quarks and leptons receive small corrections from the fifth dimension whose effects are tested by the precision data. It is found that the forward-backward asymmetries in $e^+e^-$ collisions on the $Z$ pole are well explained in a wide range of the warp factor $z_L$, but the model is consistent with the branching fractions of $Z$ decay only for large $z_L \simg 10^{15}$. Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectra of gauge bosons, quarks, and leptons as well as gauge and Higgs couplings of low-lying KK excited states are determined. Right-handed quarks and leptons have larger couplings to the KK gauge bosons than left-handed ones. Production rates of Higgs bosons and KK states at Tevatron, LHC and ILC are evaluated. The first KK $Z$ has a mass 1130 GeV with a width 422 GeV for $z_L = 10^{15}$. The current limit on the $Z'$ production at Tevatron and LHC indicates $z_L >10^{15}$. A large effect of parity violation appears in the difference between the rapidity distributions of $e^+$ and $e^-$ in the decay of the first KK $Z$. The first KK gauge bosons decay into light and heavy quarks evenly.

Sufficient conditions for open manifolds to be diffeomorphic to Euclidean spaces

Let M be a complete non-compact connected Riemannian n-dimensional manifold. We first prove that, for any fixed point p in M, the radial Ricci curvature of M at p is bounded from below by the radial curvature function of some non-compact n-dimensional model. Moreover, we then prove, without the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff convergence theory, that, if model volume growth is sufficiently close to 1, then M is diffeomorphic to Euclidean n-dimensional space. Hence, our main theorem has various advantages of the Cheeger-Colding diffeomorphism theorem via the Euclidean volume growth. Our main theorem also contains a result of do Carmo and Changyu as a special case.

Toponogov comparison theorem for open triangles

Dedicated to Professor Gromoll: The aim of our article is to generalize the Toponogov comparison theorem to a complete Riemannian manifold with smooth convex boundary. A geodesic triangle will be replaced by an open (geodesic) triangle standing on the boundary of the manifold, and a model surface will be replaced by the universal covering surface of a cylinder of revolution with totally geodesic boundary. Applications of our theorem are found in our article "Applications of Toponogov's comparison theorems for open triangles" (arXiv:1102.4156).

Total curvatures of model surfaces control topology of complete open manifolds with radial curvature bounded below. I

We investigate the finiteness structure of a complete non-compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ whose radial curvature at a base point of $M$ is bounded from below by that of a non-compact von Mangoldt surface of revolution with its total curvature greater than $π$. We show, as our main theorem, that all Busemann functions on $M$ are exhaustions, and that there exists a compact subset of $M$ such that the compact set contains all critical points for any Busemann function on $M$. As corollaries by the main theorem, $M$ has finite topological type, and the isometry group of $M$ is compact.

Total curvatures of model surfaces control topology of complete open manifolds with radial curvature bounded below. III

Dedicated to Professor K. Shiohama on the occasion of his seventieth birthday: This article is the third in a series of our investigation on a complete non-compact connected Riemannian manifold $M$. In the first series [arXiv:0901.4010], we showed that all Busemann functions on an $M$ which is not less curved than a von Mangoldt surface of revolution are exhaustions, if the total curvature of the surface is greater than $π$. A von Mangoldt surface of revolution is, by definition, a complete surface of revolution homeomorphic to Euclidean plane whose Gaussian curvature is non-increasing along each meridian. Our purpose of this series is to generalize the main theorem in [arXiv:0901.4010] to an $M$ which is not less curved than a more general surface of revolution.

H parity and the stable Higgs boson in the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification

In the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped space there results the conservation of the H parity. The H parity is assigned to all 4D fields including excited modes in Kaluza-Klein towers. The neutral Higgs boson is the lightest particle of odd H parity, consequently becoming absolutely stable. Its mass is found to be 70 \sim 135 GeV for the warp factor z_L = 10^5 \sim 10^{15}.

Tau longitudinal polarization in B -> D tau nu and its role in the search for charged Higgs boson

We study the longitudinal polarization of the tau lepton in B -> D tau nu decay. After discussing possible sensitivities of tau decay modes to the tau polarization, we examine the effect of charged Higgs boson on the tau polarization in B -> D tau nu. We find a relation between the decay rate and the tau polarization, and clarify the role of the tau polarization measurement in the search for the charged Higgs boson.

Stable Higgs Bosons as Cold Dark Matter

In a class of the gauge-Higgs unification models the 4D neutral Higgs boson, which is a part of the extra-dimensional component of the gauge fields, becomes absolutely stable as a consequence of the gauge invariance and dynamically generated new parity, serving as a promising candidate for cold dark matter (CDM). We show that the observed relic abundance of cold dark matter is obtained in the SO(5) x U(1) model in the warped space with the Higgs mass around 70 GeV. The Higgs-nucleon scattering cross section is found to be close to the current CDMS II and XENON10 bounds in the direct detection of dark matter.

preprint2009arXiv

Total curvatures of model surfaces control topology of complete open manifolds with radial curvature bounded below. II

We prove, as our main theorem, the finiteness of topological type of a complete open Riemannian manifold $M$ with a base point $p \in M$ whose radial curvature at $p$ is bounded from below by that of a non-compact model surface of revolution $\tilde{M}$ which admits a finite total curvature and has no pair of cut points in a sector. Here a sector is, by definition, a domain cut off by two meridians emanating from the base point $\tilde{p} \in \tilde{M}$. Notice that our model $\tilde{M}$ does not always satisfy the diameter growth condition introduced by Abresch and Gromoll. In order to prove the main theorem, we need a new type of the Toponogov comparison theorem. As an application of the main theorem, we present a partial answer to Milnor's open conjecture on the fundamental group of complete open manifolds.

Exploring flavor structure of supersymmetry breaking from rare B decays and unitarity triangle

We study effects of supersymmetric particles in various rare B decay processes as well as in the unitarity triangle analysis. We consider three different supersymmetric models, the minimal supergravity, SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrinos, and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with U(2) flavor symmetry. In the SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrinos, we consider two cases of the mass matrix of the right-handed neutrinos. We calculate direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries in the b to s gamma decay and CP asymmetry in B_d to phi K_S as well as the B_s--anti-B_s mixing amplitude for the unitarity triangle analysis in these models. We show that large deviations are possible for the SU(5) SUSY GUT and the U(2) model. The pattern and correlations of deviations from the standard model will be useful to discriminate the different SUSY models in future B experiments.

Exploring Flavor Structure of Supersymmetry Breaking at B factories

We investigate quark flavor signals in three different supersymmetric models, the minimal supergravity, the SU(5) SUSY GUT with right handed neutrinos, and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with U(2) flavor symmetry, in order to study physics potential of the present and future $B$ factories. We evaluate CP asymmetries in various B decay modes, $Δm_{B_s}$, $Δm_{B_d}$, and $ε_K$. The allowed regions of the CP asymmetry in $B\to J/ψK_S$ and $Δm_{B_s}/Δm_{B_d}$ are different for the three models so that precise determinations of these observables in near future experiments are useful to distinguish the three models. We also investigate possible deviations from the standard model predictions of CP asymmetries in other B decay modes. In particular, a large deviation is possible for the U(2) model. The consistency check of the unitarity triangle including $B\to ππ,ρπ,D^{(*)}K^{(*)},D^{(*)}π,D^{*}ρ$, and so on, at future high luminosity $e^+e^-$ $B$ factories and hadronic $B$ experiments is therefore important to distinguish flavor structures of different supersymmetric models.

$b \to s l \bar l $ in the minimal supergravity model

The $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ process is studied in the minimal supergravity model in detail. Taking account of the long distance contributions from the $c\overline{c}$ resonances, we calculate the branching ratio and the lepton forward-backward asymmetry in this model. We find that there is a strong correlation between the branching ratios of $b \rightarrow s γ$ and $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ processes and that the interference effect can change the $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ branching ratio in the off-resonance regions by up to $\pm 15%$ depending on the relative phase between the long and short distance contributions. Using various phenomenological constraints including the branching ratio of $b \rightarrow s γ$, we show that there are regions in the parameter space where the branching ratio of $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ is enhanced by about 50% compared to the SM. We also show that the branching ratio of $b \rightarrow s ν{\overline ν}$ is reduced at most by 10% from the SM prediction.

Neutral Scalar Higgs Masses and Production Cross Sections in an Extended Supersymmetric Standard Model

Upper bounds on the three neutral scalar Higgs masses are considered in the supersymmetric standard model with a gauge singlet Higgs field. When the lightest Higgs is singlet-dominated the second lightest Higgs is shown to lie near or below the theoretical upper bound on the lightest Higgs mass. We also consider detectability of these Higgs bosons at a future $e^+ e^-$ linear collider with $\sqrt{s}\sim 300 $ GeV and show that at least one of the neutral scalar Higgs has a production cross section larger than 0.04~pb.
