Cuprates phase diagram deduced from magnetic susceptibility: what is the `true' pseudogap line?

Two contradictory phase diagrams have dominated the literature of high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. Does the pseudogap line cross the superconducting $T_c$-dome or not? To answer, we have revisited the experimental magnetic susceptibility and knight shift of four different compounds, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_8$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$, and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$, as a function of temperature and doping. The susceptibility can be described by the same function for all materials, having a magnetic and an electronic contributions. The former is the 2D antiferromagnetic (AF) square lattice response, with a characteristic temperature of magnetic correlations $T_{max}$. The latter is the `Pauli' term, revealing the gap opening in the electronic density of states at the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. From precise fits of the data, we find that $T_{max}(p)$ decreases linearly as a function of doping ($p$) over a wide range, but saturates abruptly in the overdoped regime. Concomitantly, $T^*(p)$ is {\it linear and tangent} to the dome, either crossing or approaching $T_{max}(p)$ at the top of the dome, indicating a qualitative change of behavior from underdoped to overdoped regimes. Contrary to the idea that the pseudogap terminates just above optimal doping, our analysis suggests that the gap exists throughout the phase diagram. It is consistent with a pseudogap due to hole pairs, or `pairons', above $T_c$. We conclude that $T_{max}$, reflecting the AF magnetic correlations, has often been misinterpreted as the pseudogap temperature $T^*$.

Coexistence of multiple charge-density waves and superconductivity in SrPt2As2 revealed by 75As-NMR/NQR and 195Pt-NMR

The relationship between charge density wave (CDW) orders and superconductivity in arsenide superconductor SrPt$_2$As$_2$ with $T_c$ = 5.2 K which crystallizes in the CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type structure was studied by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements up to 520 K, and $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and $^{195}$Pt-NMR measurements down to 1.5 K. At high temperature, $^{75}$As-NMR spectrum and nuclear spin relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) have revealed two distinct CDW orders, one realized in the As-Pt-As layer below $T_{\rm CDW}^{\rm As(1)}$ $=$ 410 K and the other in the Pt-As-Pt layer below $T_{\rm CDW}^{\rm As(2)}$ $=$ 255 K. The $1/T_1$ measured by $^{75}$As-NQR shows a clear Hebel-Slichter peak just below $T_c$ and decreases exponentially well below $T_c$. Concomitantly, $^{195}$Pt Knight shift decreases below $T_c$. Our results indicate that superconductivity in SrPt$_2$As$_2$ is in the spin-singlet state with an $s$-wave gap and is robust under the two distinct CDW orders in different layers.

Doping-Enhanced Antiferromagnetism in Ca1-xLaxFeAs2

In iron pnictides, high temperature superconductivity emerges after suppressing antiferromagnetism by doping. Here we show that antiferromagnetism in Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeAs$_2$ is robust against and even enhanced by doping. Using $^{75}$As-nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques, we find that an antiferromagnetic order occurs below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 62 K at a high doping concentration ($x$ = 0.15) where superconductivity sets in at the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 35 K. Unexpectedly, $T_{\rm N}$ is enhanced with increasing doping, rising up to $T_{\rm N}$ = 70 K at $x$ = 0.24. The obtained phase diagram of this new system enriches the physics of iron-based high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors.

Superconductivity in MgPtSi: An orthorhombic variant of MgB2

A ternary compound, MgPtSi, was synthesized by solid-state reaction. An examination of the compound by powder X-ray diffraction revealed that it crystallizes in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure with the Pnma space group. The structure comprises alternately stacked layers of Mg and PtSi honeycomb network, which is reminiscent of MgB2, and the buckling of the honeycomb network causes orthorhombic distortion. Electrical and magnetic studies revealed that MgPtSi exhibited superconductivity with a transition temperature of 2.5 K. However, its isostructural compounds, namely, MgRhSi and MgIrSi, were not found to exhibit superconductivity.

Suppression of Nonmagnetic Insulating State by Application of Pressure in Mineral Tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$

The mineral tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ exhibits a first-order metal--insulator transition (MIT) at $T_{\rm MI}$ = 85 K and ambient pressure. We measured the $^{63}$Cu-NMR at ambient pressure and the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at high pressures. $^{63}$Cu-NMR results indicate a nonmagnetic insulating ground state in this compound. The MIT is monotonically suppressed by pressure and disappears at $\sim1.0$ GPa. Two other anomalies are observed in the resistivity measurements, and the pressure -- temperature phase diagram of Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ is constructed.

Enhanced Superconductivity up to 43 K by P/Sb Doping of Ca1-xLaxFeAs2

The effects of isovalent doping on the superconducting transition temperature Tc in novel 112-type iron arsenide Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 were studied by conducting measurements of electrical resistivity rho and magnetization M. P or Sb doping strongly enhances Tc: P-doped Ca0.84La0.16FeAs2 and Sb-doped Ca0.85La0.15FeAs2 exhibited Tc of 41 and 43 K, respectively, while Ca0.85La0.15FeAs2 without P/Sb exhibited Tc = 35 K. These observations will give a hint for further enhancing Tc of rare-earth doped Ca-Fe-As systems.

Iridium Orbital Crossover at the Structural Phase Transition in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2-xIrxAs2)5

We report a structural transition found in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2-xIrxAs2)5, which exhibits superconductivity at 16 K, with a layer of divalent iridium coordinated by arsenic in between Fe2As2 layers. The c-axis parameter is doubled below a structural transition temperature of approximately 100 K, while the tetragonal symmetry with space group P4/n (No.85) is unchanged at all temperatures measured. Our synchrotron x-ray diffraction study clearly shows displacements along the z-direction occur in half of the iridium sites, resulting in a complex orbital ordering pattern. Combining our theoretical calculation of the 5d orbital energies with structural data, we propose the iridium orbital crossover transition between the dxy and dz2 orbitals.

Superconducting Transition Temperatures of up to 47 K from Simultaneous Rare-Earth Element and Antimony Doping of 112-Type CaFeAs2

The effects of simultaneous Sb doping on the superconductivity of 112-type Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) were studied through measurements of the magnetization and electrical resistivity. In Sb-free materials, the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the La-doped sample was 35 K, while those of the Pr- and Nd-doped samples were ~10 K; no superconductivity was observed in the Ce-doped sample. Sb doping increased the Tc of all RE-doped samples: Tc increased to 47, 43, 43, and 43 K for RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, respectively. We also found that the enhanced superconductivity results from the increase in the lattice parameter b, which increases the As-Fe-As bond angle to be closer to the ideal tetrahedron value. These observations provide insight for further increasing the Tc of the 112 phase.

Suppression of superconductivity and structural phase transition against pressure in Ca$_{10}$(Ir$_{4}$As$_{8}$)(Fe$_{2-x}$Ir$_{x}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$

We measured the pressure dependence of in-plane resistivity $ρ_{ab}$ in the recently-discovered iron-based superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Ir$_{4}$As$_{8}$)(Fe$_{2-x}$Ir$_{x}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$, which shows a unique structural phase transition in the absence of magnetic ordering, with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 16 K and structural phase transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ $\simeq$ 100 K at ambient pressure. $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm s}$ are suppressed on applying pressure and disappear at approximately 0.5 GPa, suggesting a relationship between superconductivity and structure. Ca$_{10}$(Ir$_{4}$As$_{8}$)(Fe$_{2-x}$Ir$_{x}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ is a rather rare example in which the superconductivity appears only in a low-temperature ordered phase. The fact that the change in the crystal structure is directly linked with superconductivity suggests that the crystal structure as well as magnetism are important factors governing superconductivity in iron pnictides.

Switching of Conducting Planes by Partial Dimer Formation in IrTe$_2$

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was employed to study the structural-electronic phase transition of IrTe$_2$ at approximately 270 K. The low-temperature structure was found to be a triclinic (space group $P\bar{1}$) characterized by the partial formation of Ir$_2$ dimers in the triangular lattice of IrTe$_2$, resulting in a structural modulation with a wave vector of ${\bf q} = (1/5, 0, -1/5)$. First-principles band calculations demonstrate that tilted two-dimensional Fermi surfaces emerge in the triclinic phase, suggesting that switching of the conducting planes occurs from the basal plane of the trigonal IrTe$_2$ to the tilted plane normal to ${\bf q}$ of the triclinic IrTe$_2$.

Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Study of Structural Phase Transition in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2-xIrxAs2)

We report a structural transition found in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2-xIrxAs2)5, which exhibits superconductivity at 16 K. The c-axis parameter is doubled below a structural transition temperature of approximately 100 K, while the tetragonal symmetry with space group P4/n (No.85) is unchanged at all temperatures measured. Our synchrotron x-ray diffraction study clearly shows iridium ions at a non-coplanar position shift along the z-direction at the structural phase transition. We discuss that the iridium displacements affect superconductivity in Fe2As2 layers.

Emergence of superconductivity at 45 K by lanthanum and phosphorus co-doping of CaFe2As2

Co-doping of lanthanum and phosphorus in CaFe2As2 induces superconductivity at 45 K. This superconducting transition temperature is higher than the 38 K transition in Ba1-xKxFe2As2, which is the maximum found thus far among the 122 phases. Superconductivity with a substantial shielding volume fraction was observed at 0.12 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.18 and y = 0.06 in Ca1-xLaxFe2(As1-yPy)2. The superconducting phase of the present system seems to be not adjacent to an antiferromagnetic phase.

Enhancing high-temperature thermoelectric properties of PtAs2 by Rh doping

The effects of Rh doping on the thermoelectric properties of Pt1-xRhxAs2 (x = 0, 0.005, and 0.01) with pyrite structure were studied by conducting measurements of electrical resistivity rho, Seebeck coefficient S, and thermal conductivity kappa. The sample with x = 0.005 exhibited large S and low rho, resulting in a maximum power factor (S^2/rho) of 65 muW/cmK^2 at 440 K. The peculiarly shaped "corrugated flat band" predicted for PtSb2 might explain the enhanced thermoelectric properties of doped PtAs2.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in Mineral Calaverite AuTe2

The pressure dependences of resistivity and ac susceptibility have been measured in the mineral calaverite AuTe$_2$. Resistivity clearly shows a first-order phase transition into a high-pressure phase, consistent with the results of a previous structural analysis. We found zero resistivity and a diamagnetic shielding signal at low temperatures in the high-pressure phase, which clearly indicates the appearance of superconductivity. Our experimental results suggest that bulk superconductivity appears only in the high-pressure phase. For AuTe$_2$, the highest superconducting transition temperature under pressure is $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.3 K at 2.34 GPa; it was $T_{\rm c}$ = 4.0 K for Pt-doped (Au$_{0.65}$Pt$_{0.35}$)Te$_2$. The difference in $T_{\rm c}$ between the two systems is discussed on the basis of the results obtained using the band calculations and McMillan's formula.

Superconductivity in Ca1-xLaxFeAs2: A Novel 112-Type Iron Pnictide with Arsenic Zigzag Bonds

We report superconductivity in the novel 112-type iron-based compound Ca1-xLaxFeAs2. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the compound crystallizes in a monoclinic structure (space group P21), in which Fe2As2 layers alternate with Ca2As2 spacer layers such that monovalent arsenic forms zigzag chains. Superconductivity with a transition temperature (Tc) of 34 K was observed for the x = 0.1 sample, while the x = 0.21 sample exhibited trace superconductivity at 45 K. First-principles band calculations demonstrated the presence of almost cylindrical Fermi surfaces, favorable for the high Tc in La-doped CaFeAs2.

Superconductivity in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2As2)5 with Square-Planar Coordination of Iridium

We report the unprecedented square-planar coordination of iridium in the iron iridium arsenide Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2As2)5. This material experiences superconductivity at 16 K. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and first- principles band calculation suggest Ir(II) oxidation state, which yields electrically conductive Ir4As8 layers. Such metallic spacer layers are thought to enhance the interlayer coupling of Fe2As2, in which superconductivity emerges, thus offering a way to control the superconducting transition temperature.

Suppression of Structural Phase Transition in IrTe2 by Isovalent Rh Doping

We report that the isovalent Rh doping of IrTe2 suppresses the structural/electronic phase transition and induces superconductivity at 2.6 K. The doping level of Rh that is necessary for suppressing the transition is three times higher than those of Pt and Pd. Ir1-xRhxTe2 might provide us with a unique opportunity to study the origin of the structural/electronic phase transition in IrTe2.

Breakdown of Chemical Scaling for Pt-Doped CaFe2As2

We report a breakdown of the scaling of the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N on chemical doping for Pt-doped CaFe2As2. The substitution of Pt is ineffective in the reduction of antiferromagnetic ordering as well as in inducing superconductivity in Ca(Fe1-xPtx)2As2. The Pt-doped CaFe2As2 that does not exhibit superconductivity will, however, provide us an ideal opportunity to elucidate the role of chemical doping in the occurrence of superconductivity in iron-based materials.

Iron-platinum-arsenide superconductors Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5

An overview of the crystal structures and physical properties of the recently discovered iron-platinum-arsenide superconductors, Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 (n = 3 and 4), which have a superconducting transition temperature up to 38 K, is provided. The crystal structure consists of superconducting Fe2As2 layers alternating with platinum-arsenic layers, PtnAs8. The upper critical field Hc2, hydrostatic pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature Tc, and normal-state magnetic susceptibility are reported.

Large Seebeck effect in the electron-doped FeAs$_2$ driven by quasi one dimensional pudding-mold type band

We investigate the thermoelectric propeties of the electron-doped FeAs$_2$ both experimentally and theoretically. Electrons are doped by partially substituting Se for As, which leads to a metallic behavior in the resistivity. A Seebeck coefficient of about $-$200 $μ$V/K is reached at 300 K for 1% doping, and about $-$120 $μ$V/K even at 5% doping. The origin of this large Seebeck coefficient despite the metallic conductivity is analyzed from a band structure point of view. The first-principles band calculation reveals the presence of a pudding-mold type band just above the band gap, somewhat similar to Na$_x$CoO$_2$, but with a quasi-one-dimensional nature. We calculate the Seebeck coefficient using a tightbinding model that correctly reproduces this band structure, and this gives results close to the experimental observations. The origin of this peculiar band shape is also discussed.

Superconductivity in Pseudo-Binary Silicide SrNixSi2-x with AlB2-Type Structure

We demonstrate the emergence of superconductivity in pseudo-binary silicide SrNixSi2-x. The compound exhibits a structural phase transition from the cubic SrSi2-type structure (P4132) to the hexagonal AlB2-type structure (P6/mmm) upon substituting Ni for Si at approximately x = 0.1. The hexagonal structure is stabilized in the range of 0.1 < x < 0.7. The superconducting phase appears in the vicinity of the structural phase boundary. Ni acts as a nonmagnetic dopant, as confirmed by the Pauli paramagnetic behavior.

Superconductivity Induced by Bond Breaking in the Triangular Lattice of IrTe2

IrTe2, a layered compound with a triangular iridium lattice, exhibits a structural phase transition at approximately 250 K. This transition is characterized by the formation of Ir-Ir bonds along the b-axis. We found that the breaking of Ir-Ir bonds that occurs in Ir1-xPtxTe2 results in the appearance of a structural critical point in the T = 0 limit at xc = 0.035. Although both IrTe2 and PtTe2 are paramagnetic metals, superconductivity at Tc = 3.1 K is induced by the bond breaking in a narrow range of x > xc in Ir1-xPtxTe2. This result indicates that structural fluctuations can be involved in the emergence of superconductivity.

Interplay of Superconductivity and Fermi-Liquid Transport in Rh-Doped CaFe2As2 with Lattice-Collapse Transition

Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ undergoes successive phase transitions with increasing Rh doping in the $T$ $=$ 0 limit. The antiferromagnetic-metal phase with orthorhombic structure at 0.00 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.020 is driven to a superconducting phase with uncollapsed-tetragonal (ucT) structure at 0.020 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.024; a non-superconducting collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phase takes over at $x$ $\geq$ 0.024. The breakdown of Fermi-liquid transport is observed in the ucT phase above $T_{\rm c}$. In the adjacent cT phase, Fermi-liquid transport is restored along with a disappearance of superconductivity. This interplay of superconductivity and Fermi-liquid transport suggests the essential role of magnetic fluctuations in the emergence of superconductivity in doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$.

Superconductivity at 38 K in Iron-Based Compound with Platinum-Arsenide Layers Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5

We report superconductivity in novel iron-based compounds Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 with n = 3 and 4. Both compounds crystallize in triclinic structures (space group P-1), in which Fe2As2 layers alternate with PtnAs8 spacer layers. Superconductivity with a transition temperature of 38 K is observed in the n = 4 compound with a Pt content of x ~ 0.36 in the Fe2As2 layers. The compound with n = 3 exhibits superconductivity at 13 K.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave in SrPt2As2

SrPt2As2 is a novel arsenide superconductor, which crystallizes in the CaBe2Ge2-type structure as a different polymorphic form of the ThCr2Si2-type structure. SrPt2As2 exhibits a charge-density-wave (CDW) ordering at about 470 K and enters into a superconducting state at Tc = 5.2 K. The coexistence of superconductivity and CDW refers to Peierls instability with a moderately strong electron-phonon interaction. Thus SrPt2As2 can be viewed as a nonmagnetic analog of iron-based superconductors, such as doped BaFe2As2, in which superconductivity emerges in close proximity to spin-density-wave ordering.

Evidence for dominant Pauli paramagnetic effect in the upper critical fields of a FeTe0.6Se0.4 superconductor

We investigate temperature-dependence of the upper critical fields Hc2(T) of a superconducting FeTe0.6Se0.4 single crystal by measuring resistivity in static magnetic fields up to 45 T. The observations of strong bending in the Hc2ab(T) curves and nearly isotropic Hc2ab(0) ~ Hc2c(0) ~ 48 T support the presence of strong Pauli paramagnetic effect. We show that the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula considering the Pauli limiting and the spin-orbit scattering together can effectively describe both Hc2ab(T) and Hc2c(T) curves. The enhancement in quasi-particle density of states or increased scattering resulting from Te(Se) vacancy or excess Fe is discussed as a possible origin for the manifesting Pauli paramagnetic effect.

Superconductivity in SrFe2As2 with Pt Doping

We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of Pt-substituted SrFe2As2 and measured the temperature dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. We have observed the superconducting transition at Tc = 17 K with the maximum shielding volume fraction at x = 0.125 in Sr(Fe1-xPtx)2As2. It is found that the maximum Tc depends on the substituted element, so it is important to substitute various elements to explore new iron-based superconductors with higher Tc.
