Nodal and nematic superconducting phases in NbSe2 monolayers from competing superconducting channels

Transition metal dichalcogenides like 2H-NbSe2 in their two-dimensional (2D) form exhibit Ising superconductivity with the quasiparticle spins are firmly pinned in the direction perpendicular to the basal plane. This enables them to withstand exceptionally high magnetic fields beyond the Pauli limit for superconductivity. Using field-angle-resolved magnetoresistance experiments for fields rotated in the basal plane we investigate the field-angle dependence of the upper critical field (Hc2), which directly reflects the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. We observe a six-fold nodal symmetry superposed on a two-fold symmetry. This agrees with theoretical predictions of a nodal topological superconducting phase near Hc2, together with a nematic superconducting state. We demonstrate that in NbSe2 such unconventional superconducting states can arise from the presence of several competing superconducting channels.

Strain tunability of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in van der Waals ferromagnets VI3

Layered ferromagnets with high coercivity have special applications in nanoscale memory elements in electronic circuits, such as data storage. Therefore, searching for new hard ferromagnets and effectively tuning or enhancing the coercivity are the hottest topics in layered magnets today. Here, we report a strain tunability of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets VI3 using magnetic circular dichroism measurements. For an unstrained flake, the M-H curve shows a rectangular-shaped hysteresis loop with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a large coercivity (up to 1.775 T at 10 K). Furthermore, the coercivity can be enhanced to a maximum of 2.6 T at 10 K under a 2.9% in-plane tensile strain. Our DFT calculations show that the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) can be dramatically increased after applying an in-plain tensile strain, which contributes to the enhancement of coercivity in the VI3 flake. Meanwhile, the strain tunability on the coercivity of CrI3, with a similar crystal structure, is limited. The main reason is the strong spin-orbital coupling in V3+ in VI6 octahedra in comparison with that in Cr3+. The strain tunability of coercivity in VI3 flakes highlights its potential for integration into vdW heterostructures, paving the way toward nanoscale spintronic devices and applications in the future.

Core-level x-ray photoemission and Raman spectroscopy studies on electronic structures in Mott-Hubbard type nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$

We perform core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and electronic Raman scattering studies of electronic structures and spin fluctuations in the bulk samples of the nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$. According to Nd $3d$ and O $1s$ XPS spectra, we conclude that NdNiO$_2$ has a large transfer energy. From the analysis of the main line of the Ni $2p_{3/2}$ XPS, we confirm the NiO$_2$ planes in NdNiO$_2$ are of Mott-Hubbard type in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. The two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering provides direct evidence for the strong spin-fluctuation in NdNiO$_2$. The peak position determines the antiferromagnetic exchange $J=25$~meV. Our experimental results agree well with our previous theoretical results.

The optical conductivity of few-layer black phosphorus by infrared spectroscopy

The strength of light-matter interaction is of central importance in photonics and optoelectronics. For many widely studied two-dimensional semiconductors, such as MoS2, the optical absorption due to exciton resonances increases with thickness. However, here we will show, few-layer black phosphorus exhibits an opposite trend. We determine the optical conductivity of few-layer black phosphorus with thickness down to bilayer by infrared spectroscopy. On the contrary to our expectations, the frequency-integrated exciton absorption is found to be enhanced in thinner samples. Moreover, the continuum absorption near the band edge is almost a constant, independent of the thickness. We will show such scenario is related to the quanta of the universal optical conductivity of graphene, with a prefactor originating from the band anisotropy.

Magnetic order induced polarization anomaly of Raman scattering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$

The recent discovery of 2D magnets has revealed various intriguing phenomena due to the coupling between spin and other degree of freedoms (such as helical photoluminescence, nonreciprocal SHG). Previous research on the spin-phonon coupling effect mainly focuses on the renormalization of phonon frequency. Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$. For monolayer samples, the dominant A$\rm_{1g}$ peak shows abnormally high intensity in the cross polarization channel at low temperature, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. While for bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Magnetic Raman continuum in single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

Recently H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been reported as a spin-orbital entangled quantum spin liquid (QSL) [K. Kitagawa et al., Nature {\bf 554}, 341 (2018)], albeit its connection to Kitaev QSL has not been yet identified. To unveil the related Kitaev physics, we perform the first Raman spectroscopy studies on single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ samples. We implement a soft chemical replacement of Li$^+$ with H$^+$ from $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ single crystals to synthesize the single crystal samples of the iridate second generation H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. The Raman spectroscopy can be used to diagnose the QSL state since the magnetic Raman continuum arises from a process involving pairs of fractionalized Majorana fermionic excitation in a pure Kitaev model. We observe a broad dome-shaped magnetic continuum in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$, in line with theoretical expectations for the two-spin process in the Kitaev QSL. Our results establish the close connection to the Kitaev QSL physics in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$.

Mechanisms governing phonon scattering by topological defects in graphene nanoribbons

Understanding phonon scattering by topological defects in graphene is of particular interest for thermal management in graphene-based devices. We present a study that quantifies the roles of the different mechanisms governing defect phonon scattering by comparing the effects of ten different defect structures using molecular dynamics. Our results show that phonon scattering is mainly influenced by mass density difference, with general trends governed by the defect formation energy and typical softening behaviors in the phonon density of state. The phonon scattering cross-section is found to be far larger than that geometrically occupied by the defects. We also show that the lattice thermal conductivity can be reduced by a factor of up to ~30 in the presence of the grain boundaries formed by these defects.

Variable Electron-Phonon Coupling in Isolated Metallic Carbon Nanotubes Observed by Raman Scattering

We report the existence of broad and weakly asymmetric features in the high-energy (G) Raman modes of freely suspended metallic carbon nanotubes of defined chiral index. A significant variation in peak width (from 12 cm-1 to 110 cm-1) is observed as a function of the nanotube's chiral structure. When the nanotubes are electrostatically gated, the peak widths decrease. The broadness of the Raman features is understood as the consequence of coupling of the phonon to electron-hole pairs, the strength of which varies with the nanotube chiral index and the position of the Fermi energy.
