Birational Chow-Künneth decompositions

We study the notion of a birational Chow-Künneth decomposition, which is essentially a decomposition of the integral birational motive of a variety. The existence of a birational Chow-Künneth decomposition is stably birationally invariant and this notion refines the Chow theoretical decomposition of the diagonal. We show that a birational Chow-Künneth decompostion exists for the following varieties: (a) Jacobian variety; (b) Hilbert scheme of points on a $K3$ surface and (c) The variety of lines on a stably rational cubic threefold or a stably rational cubic fourfold.

The Fourier transform for certain hyperKaehler fourfolds

Using a codimension-$1$ algebraic cycle obtained from the Poincaré line bundle, Beauville defined the Fourier transform on the Chow groups of an abelian variety $A$ and showed that the Fourier transform induces a decomposition of the Chow ring $CH^*(A)$. By using a codimension-$2$ algebraic cycle representing the Beauville--Bogomolov class, we give evidence for the existence of a similar decomposition for the Chow ring of hyperKähler varieties deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface. We indeed establish the existence of such a decomposition for the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface and for the variety of lines on a very general cubic fourfold.

Hyperkahler manifolds of Jacobian type

In this paper we define the notion of a hyperkähler manifold (potentially) of Jacobian type. If we view hyperkähler manifolds as "abelian varieties", then those of Jacobian type should be viewed as "Jacobian varieties". Under a minor assumption on the polarization, we show that a very general polarized hyperkähler fourfold $F$ of $K3^{[2]}$-type is not of Jacobian type. As a potential application, we conjecture that if a cubic fourfold is rational then its variety of lines is of Jacobian type. Under some technical assumption, it is proved that the variety of lines on a rational cubic fourfold is potentially of Jacobian type. We also prove the Hodge conjecture in degree 4 for a generic $F$ of $K3^{[2]}$-type.

Prym-Tjurin Constructions on Cubic Hypersurfaces

In this paper, we give a Prym-Tjurin construction for the cohomology and the Chow groups for a cubic hypersurface. On the space of lines meeting a given rational curve, there is the incidence correspondence. This correspondence induces an action on both of the primitive cohomology and the primitive Chow groups. We first show that this action satisfies a quadratic equation. Then the Abel-Jacobi homomorphism induces an isomorphism between the primitive cohomology of the cubic hypersurface and the Prym-Tjurin part of the above action. This also holds for Chow groups with rational coefficients.

On relations among 1-cycles on cubic hypersurfaces

In this paper we give two explicit relations among 1-cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth cubic hypersurfaces $X$. Such a relation is given in terms of a (pair of) curve(s) and its secant lines. As the first application, we reprove Paranjape's theorem that $\mathrm{CH}_1(X)$ is always generated by lines and that it is isomorphic to $\Z$ if the dimension of $X$ is at least 5. Another application is to the intermediate jacobian of a cubic threefold $X$. To be more precise, we show that the intermediate jacobian of $X$ is naturally isomorphic to the Prym-Tjurin variety constructed from the curve parameterizing all lines meeting a given curve on $X$. The incidence correspondences play an important role in this study. We also give a description of the Abel-Jacobi map for 1-cycles in this setting.

Rational curves on Fermat hypersurfaces

In this note we study rational curves on degree $p^r+1$ Fermat hypersurface in $\PP^{p^r+1}_k$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. The key point is that the presence of Frobenius morphism makes the behavior of rational curves to be very different from that of charateristic 0. We show that if there exists $N_0$ such that for all $e\geq N_0$ there is a degree $e$ very free rational curve on $X$, then $N_0> p^r(p^r-1)$.
