A New Heavy Flavor Program for the Future Electron-Ion Collider

The proposed high-energy and high-luminosity Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide one of the cleanest environments to precisely determine the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) in a wide $x$-$Q^{2}$ range. Heavy flavor production at the EIC provides access to nPDFs in the poorly constrained high Bjorken-$x$ region, allows us to study the quark and gluon fragmentation processes, and constrains parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter. Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory are developing a new physics program to study heavy flavor production, flavor tagged jets, and heavy flavor hadron-jet correlations in the nucleon/nucleus going direction at the future EIC. The proposed measurements will provide a unique way to explore the flavor dependent fragmentation functions and energy loss in a heavy nucleus. They will constrain the initial-state effects that are critical for the interpretation of previous and ongoing heavy ion measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. We show an initial conceptual design of the proposed Forward Silicon Tracking (FST) detector at the EIC, which is essential to carry out the heavy flavor measurements. We further present initial feasibility studies/simulations of heavy flavor hadron reconstruction using the proposed FST.

D Production In p-p and d-Au Collisions

This is an extension of our previous work on $J/Ψ$, $Ψ'(2S)$, $Υ(nS)$ production in p-p and A-A collisions to the production of $D^+(c\bar{d}),D^o(c\bar{u})$, with the main new aspect being the fragmentation probability, $D_{c \rightarrow c\bar{q}}$, which has been calculated almost two decades ago. The rapidity cross sections for $D^+(c\bar{d}),D^o(c\bar{u})$ production from both p-p and d-AU collisions is estimated.

Heavy-quark state production in A-A collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV

We estimate differential rapidity cross sections for $J/Ψ$ and $Υ(1S)$ production via Cu-Cu and Au-Au collisions at RHIC, and the relative probabilities of $Ψ'(2S)$ to $J/Ψ$ production via p-p collisions using our recent theory of mixed heavy quark hybrids, in which the $Ψ'(2S)$ mesons have approximately equal normal $q\bar{q}$ and hybrid $q\bar{q}g$ components. We also estimate the relative probabilities of $Ψ'(2S)$ to $J/Ψ$ production via Cu-Cu and Au-Au collisions, which will be measured in future RHIC experiments. We also review production ratios of $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ to $Υ(1S)$ in comparison to recent experimental results. This is an extension of our recent work on p-p collisions for possible tests of the production of Quark-Gluon Plasma via A-A collisions at BNL-RHIC.

Prospects of polarized fixed target Drell-Yan experiments

It has been proposed that the Siverse transverse single spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan production in transversely polarized p+p collisions would have an opposite sign compared to what has been observed in the polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) experiments. Experimental confirmation or disproval of this prediction would provide a new fundamental test of QCD and shed new light on our theoretical understanding of the transverse spin physics phenomena. We discuss the prospects and physics sensitivities of polarized fixed target Drell-Yan experiments that could utilize the existing proton and other hadron beams at Fermilab, and polarized proton beams at RHIC with a polarized solid proton and/or neutron target option. We show that if realized, the new experiments would provide critical measurements of not only the sign change (or not) of Sivers functions, but also the information of quark and antiquark's Sivers distributions over a wide kinematic range.

J/ΨProduction in pp Collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV at RHIC

We study J/ψproduction in pp collisions at RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range using the color singlet and color octet mechanism which are based on pQCD and NRQCD. Here we show that the color octet mechanism reproduces the RHIC data for J/ψproduction in pp collisions with respect to the p_T distribution, the rapidity distribution and the total cross section at \sqrt s = 200 GeV. The color singlet mechanism leads to a relatively small contribution to the total cross section when compared to the octet contribution.

Color Octet Contribution to High p_T J/ΨProduction in pp Collisions at \sqrt s = 500 and 200 GeV at RHIC

We compute \frac{dσ}{dp_T} of the J/ψproduction in pp collisions at RHIC at \sqrt s = 500 and 200 GeV by using both the color octet and singlet models in the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The J/ψwe compute here includes the direct J/ψfrom the partonic fusion processes and the J/ψcoming from the radiative decays of χ_J's both in the color octet and singlet channel. The high p_T J/ψproduction cross section is computed within the PHENIX detector acceptance ranges: -0.35 < η< 0.35 and 1.2 < \|η| < 2.4, the central electron and forward muon arms. It is found that the color octet contribution to J/ψproduction is dominant at RHIC energy in comparison to the color singlet contributions. We compare our results with the recent preliminary data obtained by PHENIX detector for the high p_T J/ψmeasurements. While the color singlet model fails to explain the data completely the color octet model is in agreement with the single data point above 2 GeV transverse momentum. A measurement of J/ψproduction at RHIC in the next run with better statistics will allow us to determine the validity of the color octet model of J/ψproduction at RHIC energies. This is very important because it is necessary to know the exact mechanism for J/ψproduction in pp collisions at RHIC if one is to make predictions of J/ψsuppression as a signature of quark-gluon plasma. These mechanisms also play an important role in determining the polarized spin structure function of the proton at RHIC.
