Epitaxial Growth of Spinel Cobalt Ferrite Films on MgAl2_2O4_4 Substrates by Direct Liquid Injection Chemical Vapor Deposition

The direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition (DLI-CVD) technique has been used for the growth of cobalt ferrite (CFO) films on (100)-oriented MgAl2_2O4_4 (MAO) substrates. Smooth and highly epitaxial cobalt ferrite thin films, with the epitaxial relationship MAO(100) [001]∥CFO(100) [001]\mathrm{MAO} (100)\:[001] \parallel \mathrm{CFO} (100)\:[001], are obtained under optimized deposition conditions. The films exhibit bulk-like structural and magnetic properties with an out-of-plane lattice constant of 8.370  A˚8.370\;\mathrmÅ and a saturation magnetization of 420  kA/m420\;\mathrm{kA/m} at room temperature. The Raman spectra of films on MgAl2_2O4_4 support the fact that the Fe3+^{3+}- and the Co2+^{2+}-ions are distributed in an ordered fashion on the B-site of the inverse spinel structure. The DLI-CVD technique has been extended for the growth of smooth and highly oriented cobalt ferrite thin films on a variety of other substrates, including MgO, and piezoelectric lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate and lead zinc niobate-lead titanate substrates.

Nanoscale switching characteristics of nearly tetragonal BiFeO3 thin films

We have investigated the nanoscale switching properties of strain-engineered BiFeO3 thin films deposited on LaAlO3 substrates using a combination of scanning probe techniques. Polarized Raman spectral analysis indicate that the nearly-tetragonal films have monoclinic (Cc) rather than P4mm tetragonal symmetry. Through local switching-spectroscopy measurements and piezoresponse force microscopy we provide clear evidence of ferroelectric switching of the tetragonal phase but the polarization direction, and therefore its switching, deviates strongly from the expected (001) tetragonal axis. We also demonstrate a large and reversible, electrically-driven structural phase transition from the tetragonal to the rhombohedral polymorph in this material which is promising for a plethora of applications.
