Bottom of the Length Spectrum of Arithmetic Orbifolds

We prove that cocompact arithmetic lattices in a simple Lie group are uniformly discrete if and only if the Salem numbers are uniformly bounded away from 11. We also prove an analogous result for semisimple Lie groups. Finally, we shed some light on the structure of the bottom of the length spectrum of an arithmetic orbifold Γ\XΓ\backslash X by showing the existence of a positive constant δ(X)>0δ(X)>0 such that squares of lengths of closed geodesics shorter than δδ must be pairwise linearly dependent over Q\mathbb Q.

On the optimal rate of equidistribution in number fields

Let kk be a number field. We study how well can finite sets of Ok\mathcal O_k equidistribute modulo powers of prime ideals, for all prime ideals at the same time. Our main result states that the optimal rate of equidistribution in Ok\mathcal O_k predicted by the local contstraints cannot be achieved unless k=Qk=\mathcal Q. We deduce that Q\mathcal Q is the only number field where the ring of integers Ok\mathcal O_k admits a simultaneous p\frak p-ordering, answering a question of Bhargava. Along the way we establish a non-trivial upper bound on the number of solutions x∈Okx\in \mathcal O_k of the inequality ∣Nk/Q(x(a−x))∣≤X2|N_{k/\mathcal Q}(x(a-x))|\leq X^2 where XX is a positive real parameter and a∈Oka\in\mathcal O_k is of norm at least e−BXe^{-B}X for a fixed real number BB. The latter can be translated as an upper bound on the average number of solutions of certain unit equations in Ok\mathcal O_k.

The covering number of the difference sets in partitions of GG-spaces and groups

We prove that for every finite partition G=A1∪⋯∪AnG=A_1\cup\dots\cup A_n of a group GG either cov(AiAi−1)≤ncov(A_iA_i^{-1})\le n for all cells AiA_i or else cov(AiAi−1Ai)<ncov(A_iA_i^{-1}A_i)<n for some cell AiA_i of the partition. Here cov(A)=min⁡{∣F∣:F⊂G,  G=FA}cov(A)=\min\{|F|:F\subset G,\;G=FA\} is the covering number of AA in GG. A similar result is proved also of partitions of GG-spaces. This gives two partial answers to a problem of Protasov posed in 1995.
