Implementing noise reduction techniques into theOpenQ*D package

We present the results of testing a new technique for stochastic noise reduction in the calculation of propagators by implementing it in OpenQ*D for two ensembles with O(a) improved Wilson fermion action, with periodic boundary conditions and pion masses of 437 MeV and 331 MeV, for the connected vector and pseudoscalar correlators. We find that the technique yields no speedup compared to traditional methods, owning to the failure of its underlying assumption that the spectra of the spatial Laplacian and Dirac operators are sufficiently similar for the technique's purposes.

The static energy of a quark-antiquark pair from Laplacian eigenmodes

We test a method for computing the static quark-antiquark potential in lattice QCD, which is not based on Wilson loops, but where the trial states are formed by eigenvector components of the covariant lattice Laplace operator. The runtime of this method is significantly smaller than the standard Wilson loop calculation, when computing the static potential not only for on-axis, but also for many off-axis quark-antiquark separations, i.e., when a fine spatial resolution is required. We further improve the signal by using multiple eigenvector pairs, weighted with Gaussian profile functions of the eigenvalues, providing a basis for a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP), as it was recently introduced to improve distillation in meson spectroscopy. We show results with the new method for the static potential with dynamical fermions and demonstrate its efficiency compared to traditional Wilson loop calculations. The method presented here can also be applied to compute hybrid or tetra-quark potentials and to static-light systems.

Towards string breaking with 2+1 dynamical fermions using the stochastic LapH method

We investigate the use of stochastically estimated light quark propagators in correlation functions involving a static color source. To this end we compute the static-light meson pseudoscalar correlation function in the stochastic LapH framework, using an ensemble of $N_f= 2+1$ gauge configurations generated through the CLS effort. We extract the static-light as well as the static-strange mass with good statistical precision. Together with the static potential, we obtain a preliminary estimate for the expected mixing region.

A comparison of analysis techniques for extracting resonance parameters from lattice Monte Carlo data

Different methods for extracting resonance parameters from Euclidean lattice field theory are tested. Monte Carlo simulations of the O(4) non-linear sigma model are used to generate energy spectra in a range of different volumes both below and above the inelastic threshold. The applicability of the analysis methods in the elastic region is compared. Problems which arise in the inelastic region are also emphasised.

Charmonium spectroscopy from an anisotropic lattice study

We present a progress report on our study of the charmonium spectrum in full QCD on anisotropic lattices generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. We adopt a large basis of interpolating operators to extract the excited charmonium states using the variational method. A detailed spectrum of excited charmonium mesons in many $J^{PC}$ channels is obtained. Hybrid states with exotic and non-exotic quantum numbers are determined and preliminary results from a study of disconnected contributions to the $η_c$ are presented.

Improved stochastic estimation of quark propagation with Laplacian Heaviside smearing in lattice QCD

A new method of stochastically estimating the low-lying effects of quark propagation is proposed which allows accurate determinations of temporal correlations of single-hadron and multi-hadron operators in lattice QCD. The method is well suited for calculations in large volumes. Contributions involving quark propagation connecting hadron sink operators at the same final time can be handled in a straightforward manner, even for a large number of final time slices. The method exploits Laplacian Heaviside (LapH) smearing. ZN noise is introduced in a novel way, and variance reduction is achieved using judiciously-chosen noise dilution projectors. The method is tested using isoscalar mesons in the scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector channels, and using the two-pion system of total isospin I=0,1,2 on large anisotropic 24^3 x 128 lattices with spatial spacing a_s~0.12 fm and temporal spacing a_t~0.034 fm for pion masses mpi~390 and 240 MeV.

Polynomial Filtered HMC -- an algorithm for lattice QCD with dynamical quarks

Polynomial approximations to the inverse of the fermion matrix are used to filter the dynamics of the upper energy scales in HMC simulations. The use of a multiple time-scale integration scheme allows the filtered pseudofermions to be evolved using a coarse step size. We introduce a novel generalisation of the nested leapfrog which allows for far greater flexibility in the choice of time scales. We observe a reduction in the computational expense of the molecular dynamics integration of between 3--5 which improves as the quark mass decreases.

Hadronic decay width from finite-volume energy spectrum in lattice QCD

The standard approach to determine the parameters of a resonance is based on the study of the volume dependence of the energy spectrum. In this work we study a non-linear sigma model coupled to a scalar field in which a resonance emerges. Using an analysis method introduced recently, based on the concept of probability distribution, it is possible to determine the mass and the width of the resonance.

Gauge Theories on a 2+2 Anisotropic Lattice

The implementation of gauge theories on a four-dimensional anisotropic lattice with two distinct lattice spacings is discussed, with special attention to the case where two axes are finely and two axes are coarsely discretized. Feynman rules for the Wilson gauge action are derived and the renormalizability of the theory and the recovery of the continuum limit are analyzed. The calculation of the gluon propagator and the restoration of Lorentz invariance in on-shell states is presented to one-loop order in lattice perturbation theory for $SU(N_c)$ on both 2+2 and 3+1 lattices.

Efficient glueball simulations on anisotropic lattices

Monte Carlo results for the low-lying glueball spectrum using an improved, anisotropic action are presented. Ten simulations at lattice spacings ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 fm and two different anisotropies have been performed in order demonstrate the advantages of using coarse, anisotropic lattices to calculate glueball masses. Our determinations of the tensor (2++) and pseudovector (1+-) glueball masses are more accurate than previous Wilson action calculations.
