$m_b$ at $m_H$: the running bottom quark mass and the Higgs boson

We present a new measurement of the bottom quark mass in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme at the renormalization scale of the Higgs boson mass from measurements of Higgs boson decay rates at the LHC: $m_b(m_H)= 2.60^{+0.36}_{-0.31}$ GeV. The measurement has a negligible theory uncertainty and excellent prospects to improve at the HL-LHC and a future Higgs factory. Confronting this result, and $m_b(m_b)$ from low-energy measurements and $m_b(m_Z)$ from $Z-$pole data, with the prediction of the scale evolution of the renormalization group equations, we find strong evidence for the "running" of the bottom quark mass.

Refinements of the Bottom and Strange MSSM Higgs Yukawa Couplings at NNLO

We extend the already existing two-loop calculation of the effective bottom-Yukawa coupling in the MSSM. In addition to the resummation of the dominant corrections for large values of tg$β$, we include the subleading terms related to the trilinear Higgs coupling $A_b$ and contributions induced by the electroweak gauge couplings. This calculation has been extended to the NNLO corrections to the MSSM strange-Yukawa coupling. Our analysis leads to residual theoretical uncertainties of the effective Yukawa couplings at the per-cent level.

Collider constraints on light pseudoscalars

We investigate the bounds on light pseudoscalars that arise from a variety of collider searches. Special attention is thereby devoted to the mass regions $[3, 5] \, {\rm GeV}$ and $[9,11] \, {\rm GeV}$, in which a meaningful theoretical description has to include estimates of non-perturbative effects such as the mixing of the pseudoscalar with QCD bound states. A compendium of formulas that allows to deal with the relevant corrections is provided. It should prove useful for the interpretation of future LHC searches for light CP-odd spin-0 states.

Effective Multi-Higgs Couplings to Gluons

Standard-Model Higgs bosons are dominantly produced via the gluon-fusion mechanism $gg \to H$ at the LHC, i.e. in a loop-mediated process with top loops providing the dominant contribution. For the measured Higgs boson mass of $\sim 125$ GeV the limit of heavy top quarks provides a reliable approximation as long as the relative QCD corrections are scaled with the full mass-dependent LO cross section. In this limit the Higgs coupling to gluons can be described by an effective Lagrangian. The same approach can also be applied to the coupling of more than one Higgs boson to gluons. We will derive the effective Lagrangian for multi-Higgs couplings to gluons up to N$^4$LO thus extending previous results for more than one Higgs boson. Moreover we discuss gluonic Higgs couplings up to NNLO, if several heavy quarks contribute.

Signs of Composite Higgs Pair Production at Next-to-Leading Order

In composite Higgs models the Higgs boson arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson from a strongly-interacting sector. Fermion mass generation is possible through partial compositeness accompanied by the appearance of new heavy fermionic resonances. The Higgs couplings to the Standard Model (SM) particles and between the Higgs bosons themselves are modified with respect to the SM. Higgs pair production is sensitive to the trilinear Higgs self-coupling but also to anomalous couplings like the novel 2-Higgs-2-fermion coupling emerging in composite Higgs models. The QCD corrections to SM Higgs boson pair production are known to be large. In this paper we compute, in the limit of heavy loop particle masses, the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to Higgs pair production in composite Higgs models without and with new heavy fermions. The relative QCD corrections are found to be almost insensitive both to the compositeness of the Higgs boson and to the details of the heavy fermion spectrum, since the leading order cross section dominantly factorizes. With the obtained results we investigate the question if, taking into account Higgs coupling constraints, new physics could first be seen in Higgs pair production. We find this to be the case in the high-luminosity option of the LHC for composite Higgs models with heavy fermions. We also investigate the invariant mass distributions at NLO QCD. While they are sensitive to the Higgs non-linearities and hence anomalous couplings, the influence of the heavy fermions is much less pronounced.

BSM effects on the Higgs transverse-momentum spectrum in an EFT approach

Effective Field Theories offer a consistent bottom-up approach to parametrise small deviations from Standard Model predictions. In this work we report on the application of the Effective Field Theory to shed light on effects from high-scale physics beyond the Standard Model on the Higgs transverse-momentum spectrum. The Standard Model prediction for the transverse-momentum distribution in Higgs boson production through gluon fusion is augmented by three new dimension-six operators, implying the modification of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and the inclusion of a point-like Higgs-gluon coupling. We present resummed transverse-momentum spectra including these operators at NLO+NLL accuracy and study their effects on the shape of the distribution. The proper parametrization of such effects becomes increasingly important for experimental analyses in Run II of the LHC.

Higgs Boson Production via Gluon Fusion: Soft-Gluon Resummation including Mass Effects

We analyze soft and collinear gluon resummation effects at the N$^3$LL level for Standard Model Higgs boson production via gluon fusion $gg\to H$ and the neutral scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric extension at the N$^3$LL and NNLL level, respectively. We introduce refinements in the treatment of quark mass effects and subleading collinear gluon effects within the resummation. Soft and collinear gluon resummation effects amount to up to about 5% beyond the fixed-order results for scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs boson production.

Improved cross-section predictions for heavy charged Higgs boson production at the LHC

In most extensions of the Standard Model, heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC are dominantly produced in association with heavy quarks. An up-to-date determination of the next-to-leading order total cross section in a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model is presented, including a thorough estimate of the theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher-order corrections, parton distribution functions and physical input parameters. Predictions in the four- and five-flavour schemes are compared and reconciled through a recently proposed scale-setting prescription. A four- and five-flavour scheme matched prediction is provided for the interpretation of current and future experimental searches for heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC.

NLO QCD Corrections to Higgs Pair Production including Dimension-6 Operators

New Physics that becomes relevant at some high scale $Λ$ beyond the experimental reach, can be described in the effective theory approach by adding higher-dimensional operators to the Standard Model (SM) Lagrangian. In Higgs pair production through gluon fusion, which gives access to the trilinear Higgs self-coupling, this leads not only to modifications of the SM couplings but also induces novel couplings not present in the SM. For a proper prediction of the cross section, higher order QCD corrections that are important for this process, have to be taken into account. The various higher-dimensional contributions are affected differently by the QCD corrections. In this paper, we provide the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to Higgs pair production including dimension-6 operators in the limit of large top quark masses. Depending on the dimension-6 coefficients entering the Lagrangian, the new operators affect the relative NLO QCD corrections by several per cent, while modifying the cross section by up to an order of magnitude.

Testing the Higgs Boson Coupling to Gluons

We study the possibility to separate in gluon fusion loop-induced Higgs boson production from point-like production. The Higgs boson is reconstructed in the Hgg final state at very large transverse momentum. Using the Higgs boson yields (normalized to the overall rate) and the shape of the Higgs boson pt distribution the two hypotheses can be separated with 2 standard deviations with an integrated luminosity of about 500 fb^-1. The largest experimental uncertainty affecting this estimate is the background event yield. The theoretical uncertainties from missing top mass effects are large, but can be decreased with dedicated calculations.

Effective Lagrangian for a light Higgs-like scalar

We reconsider the effective Lagrangian that describes a light Higgs-like boson and better clarify a few issues which were not exhaustively addressed in the previous literature. In particular we highlight the strategy to determine whether the dynamics responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking is weakly or strongly interacting. We also discuss how the effective Lagrangian can be implemented into automatic tools for the calculation of Higgs decay rates and production cross sections.

Matching Squark Pair Production at NLO with Parton Showers

The pair production of squarks is one of the main search channels for supersymmetry at the LHC. We present a fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections to the on-shell production of a pair of squarks in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), supplemented by the leading-order decay of the squarks to the lightest neutralino and a quark. In addition, we use the Powheg method to match our NLO calculation with parton showers. To this end, the process was implemented in the Powheg-Box framework and interfaced with Pythia6 and Herwig++. We study the differential scale dependence and K-factors, and investigate the effects of the parton showers for a benchmark scenario in the constrained MSSM.

Neutral MSSM Higgs-boson production with heavy quarks: NLO supersymmetric QCD corrections

Within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) the associated production of neutral Higgs bosons with top and bottom quarks belongs to the most important Higgs-boson production processes at the LHC. At large values of tan(beta), in particular, bottom--Higgs associated production constitutes the dominant production channel within the MSSM. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to neutral Higgs production through the parton processes q qbar, gg -> t tbar / b bbar + h/H/A and present results for the total cross sections. The genuine SUSY-QCD corrections are of moderate size for small tan(beta), but can be sizable for large tan(beta). In the latter case the bulk of these corrections can be absorbed into effective bottom Yukawa couplings.

Squark Production and Decay matched with Parton Showers at NLO

Extending previous work on the predictions for the production of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles at the LHC, we present the fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections to the production of squark and squark-antisquark pairs of the first two generations. The NLO cross sections are combined with the subsequent decay of the final state (anti)squarks into the lightest neutralino and (anti)quark at NLO SUSY-QCD. No assumptions on the squark masses are made, and the various subchannels are taken into account independently. In order to obtain realistic predictions for differential distributions the fixed-order calculations have to be combined with parton showers. Making use of the Powheg method we have implemented our results in the Powheg-Box framework and interfaced the NLO calculation with the parton shower Monte Carlo programs Pythia6 and Herwig++. The code is publicly available and can be downloaded from the Powheg-Box webpage. The impact of the NLO corrections on the differential distributions is studied and parton shower effects are investigated for different benchmark scenarios.

Constraining the Intrinsic Structure of Top-Quarks

The basic structure of top-quarks as spin-1/2 particles is characterized by the radius $R_t$ and the intrinsic magnetic dipole moment $κ_t$, both individually associated with gauge interactions. They are predicted to be zero in pointlike theories as the Standard Model. We derive upper limits of these parameters in the color sector from cross sections measured at Tevatron and LHC in top-pair production $p{\bar{p}}/pp \to t{\bar{t}}$, and we predict improved limits expected from LHC in the future, especially for analyses exploiting boosted top final states. An additional method for measuring the intrinsic parameters is based on $t \bar{t} + jet$ final states.

MSSM Higgs Self-Couplings: Two-Loop O(alpha_t alpha_s) Corrections

We analyze the minimal supersymmetric Higgs self-couplings at O(alpha_t alpha_s) within the effective potential approach. The two-loop corrections turn out to be of moderate size in the DRbar scheme if the central scale is chosen as half the SUSY scale. The inclusion of the two-loop corrections reduces the renormalization scale dependence to the per-cent level. These results have a significant impact on measurements of the trilinear Higgs self-couplings at the LHC and a future e^+e^- collider.

ZZ+jet production via gluon fusion at the LHC

Pair production of Z bosons in association with a hard jet is an important background for Higgs particle or new physics searches at the LHC. The loop-induced gluon-fusion process gg > ZZg contributes formally only at the next-to-next-to-leading order. Nevertheless, it can get enhanced by the large gluon flux at the LHC, and thus should be taken into account in relevant experimental searches. We provide the details and results of this calculation, which involves the manipulation of rank-5 pentagon integrals. Our results show that the gluon-fusion process can contribute more than 10% to the next-to-leading order QCD result and increases the overall scale uncertainty. Moreover, interference effects between Higgs and non-Higgs contributions can become large in phase-space regions where the Higgs is far off-shell.

Higgs Boson Production via Gluon Fusion in the Standard Model with four Generations

Higgs bosons can be produced copiously at the LHC via gluon fusion induced by top and bottom quark loops, and can be enhanced strongly if extra heavy quarks exist. We present results for Higgs +zero-, one- and two-jet production at the LHC, in both the Standard Model and the 4th generation model, by evaluating the corresponding heavy quark triangle, box and pentagon Feynman diagrams. We compare the results by using the effective Higgs-gluon interactions in the limit of heavy quarks with the cross sections including the full mass dependences. NLO effects with full mass dependence are included in the inclusive Higgs boson production rate. Our results improve the theoretical basis for fourth generation effects on the Higgs boson search at the LHC.

Supersymmetric Higgs Yukawa Couplings to Bottom Quarks at next-to-next-to-leading Order

The effective bottom Yukawa couplings are analyzed for the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model at two-loop accuracy within SUSY-QCD. They include the resummation of the dominant corrections for large values of tg(beta). In particular the two-loop SUSY-QCD corrections to the leading SUSY-QCD and top-induced SUSY-electroweak contributions are addressed. The residual theoretical uncertainties range at the per-cent level.

Charged-Higgs-boson production at the LHC: NLO supersymmetric QCD corrections

The dominant production process for heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC is the associated production with heavy quarks. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to charged-Higgs production through the parton processes $q\bar{q},gg \to tbH^{\pm}$ and present results for total cross sections and differential distributions. The QCD corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence and thus stabilize the theoretical predictions. We present a comparison of the next-to-leading-order results for the inclusive cross section with a calculation based on bottom--gluon fusion $gb \to tH^{\pm}$ and discuss the impact of the next-to-leading-order corrections on charged-Higgs searches at the LHC.

MSSM Higgs Boson Production via Gluon Fusion: The Large Gluino Mass Limit

Scalar MSSM Higgs boson production via gluon fusion gg -> h,H is mediated by heavy quark and squark loops. The higher order QCD corrections to these processes turn out to be large. The full supersymmetric QCD corrections have been calculated recently. In the limit of large SUSY masses a conceptual problem appears, i.e. the proper treatment of the large gluino mass limit. In this work we will describe the consistent decoupling of heavy gluino effects and derive the effective Lagrangian for decoupled gluinos.

Associated Higgs Boson Production with heavy Quarks in e+e- Collisions: SUSY--QCD Corrections

The processes e+e- -> t tbar/b bbar + Higgs allow to measure the Yukawa couplings between Higgs bosons and heavy quarks in supersymmetric theories. The complete set of next-to-leading order SUSY-QCD corrections to the cross sections of these processes have been determined in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. They turn out to be O(10-20%) and thus important for future linear e+e- colliders.

Higgs Radiation off Bottom Quarks at the Tevatron and the LHC

Higgs-boson production in association with bottom quarks, ppbar/pp -> b bbar H + X, is one of the most important discovery channels for supersymmetric Higgs particles at the Tevatron and the LHC. We have calculated the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the parton processes qqbar,gg -> bbbar H and present results for total cross sections and for distributions in the transverse momenta of the bottom quarks. The QCD corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence and thus stabilize the theoretical predictions, especially when the Higgs boson is produced in association with high-pT bottom quarks. The next-to-leading order predictions for the total cross section are in reasonable numerical agreement with calculations based on bottom-quark fusion bbbar ->H.

A Note on Doubly-Charged Higgs Pair Production at Hadron Colliders

We analyze the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of doubly-charged Higgs particles at hadron colliders in extensions of the SM with Higgs isospin triplets. At both the Tevatron and the LHC, these corrections are found to be moderate in size increasing the cross sections by about 20--30%. The residual theoretical uncertainties are of the order of 10--15% which is sufficient for experimental searches for these particles at the Tevatron and LHC.

Photoproduction of W Bosons at HERA: QCD Corrections

W bosons can be produced in the channels e+- p -> W+- + X at HERA thus allowing to probe for anomalous trilinear couplings among the gauge bosons. We discuss the NLO QCD corrections to the photoproduction of W bosons with finite transverse momentum at HERA. The higher-order QCD corrections reduce the factorization scale dependence significantly and modify the leading order cross sections by +-O(10%).

HIGLU and HDECAY: Programs for Higgs Boson Production at the LHC and Higgs Boson Decay Widths

The total cross section for Higgs boson production via the dominant gluon fusion mechanism including NLO [two-loop] QCD corrections can be calculated numerically with the program HIGLU. The QCD corrections are included for arbitrary Higgs and quark masses and increase the cross section at the LHC by up to a factor of 2. The source code HIGLU provides the evaluation of the production of the Standard Model [SM] Higgs boson as well as the neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric extension [MSSM]. The program HDECAY determines the decay widths and branching ratios of the Higgs bosons within the SM and the MSSM, including the dominant higher-order corrections. The latter are dominated by QCD corrections and two-loop corrections to the couplings and Higgs masses of the MSSM. The program includes all decay modes with branching ratios larger than $10^{-4}$. Moreover, below-threshold decays with off-shell top quarks, gauge and Higgs bosons are implemented. In addition the program is able to calculate the branching ratios of the MSSM Higgs bosons into supersymmetric particles, which can be dominant.

Two-Loop ${\cal O}(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ Corrections to Higgs Production at LEP

We evaluate the two-loop ${\cal O}(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ correction to the $ZZH$ coupling in the Standard Model by means of a low-energy theorem, assuming that the top quark is much heavier than the Higgs boson. We then construct a heavy-top-quark effective Lagrangian for the $ZZH$ interaction that accommodates the ${\cal O}(G_Fm_t^2)$ and ${\cal O}(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ corrections and derive from it the corresponding corrections to the $H\to ZZ$ decay as well as those to Higgs-boson production at LEP1, via $Z\to f\bar fH$, and at LEP2, via $e^+e^-\to ZH$. In all cases, the leading ${\cal O}(G_Fm_t^2)$ terms are considerably screened by their QCD corrections, if the on-shell renormalization scheme with $G_F$ as a basic parameter is employed.
