Benchmarking Di-Higgs Production in Various Extended Higgs Sector Models

We present a comprehensive study on Higgs pair production in various archetypical extended Higgs sectors such as the real and the complex 2-Higgs-Doublet Model, the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model augmented by a real singlet field and the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We take into account all relevant theoretical and experimental constraints, in particular the experimental limits on non-resonant and resonant Higgs pair production. We present the allowed cross sections for Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs pair production and the ranges of the SM-like Yukawa and trilinear Higgs self-coupling that are still compatible with the applied constraints. Furthermore, we give results for the pair production of a SM-like with a non-SM-like Higgs boson and for the production of a pair of non-SM-like Higgs bosons. We find that di-Higgs production in the models under investigation can exceed the SM rate substantially, not only in the non-resonance region but also due to resonant enhancement. We give several benchmarks with interesting features such as large cross sections, the possibility to test CP violation, Higgs-to-Higgs cascade decays or di-Higgs production beating single Higgs production. In all of our benchmark points, the next-to-leading order QCD corrections are included in the large top-mass limit. For these points, we found that, depending on the model and the Higgs pair final state, the corrections increase the leading order cross section by a factor of 1.79 to 2.24. We also discuss the relation between the description of Higgs pair production in an effective field theory approach and in the specific models investigated here.

One-loop Corrections to the Two-Body Decays of the Charged Higgs Bosons in the Real and Complex NMSSM

We evaluate the full next-to-leading order supersymmetric (SUSY) electroweak and SUSY-QCD corrections to the on-shell two-body decays of the charged Higgs bosons in the framework of the CP-conserving and CP-violating Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM). Our corrections are implemented in the code NMSSMCALCEW in order to compute the branching ratios of the charged Higgs boson where we also take into account the state-of-the-art QCD corrections already included in the code. We investigate the impact of the NLO corrections for each decay mode in a wide range of the parameter space that is allowed by the theoretical and experimental constraints. The new version of NMSSMCALCEW is made publicly available.

Gauge-independent Renormalization of the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model

The 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) belongs to the simplest extensions of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector that are in accordance with theoretical and experimental constraints. In order to be able to properly investigate the experimental Higgs data and, in the long term to distinguish between possible models beyond the SM, precise predictions for the Higgs boson observables have to be made available on the theory side. This requires the inclusion of the higher order corrections. In this work, we investigate in detail the renormalization of the 2HDM, a pre-requisite for the computation of higher order corrections. We pay particular attention to the renormalization of the mixing angles $α$ and $β$, which diagonalize the Higgs mass matrices and which enter all Higgs observables. The implications of various renormalization schemes in next-to-leading order corrections to the sample processes $H^\pm \to W^\pm h/H$ and $H \to ZZ$ are investigated. Based on our findings, we will present a renormalization scheme that is at the same time process independent, gauge independent and numerically stable.

Higgs mass predictions of public NMSSM spectrum generators

The publicly available spectrum generators for the NMSSM often lead to different predictions for the mass of the standard model-like Higgs boson even if using the same renormalization scheme and two-loop accuracy. Depending on the parameter point, the differences can exceed 5 GeV, and even reach 8 GeV for moderate superparticle masses of up to 2 TeV. It is shown here that these differences can be traced back to the calculation of the running standard model parameters entering all calculations, to the approximations used in the two-loop corrections included in the different codes, and to different choices for the renormalization conditions and scales. In particular, the importance of the calculation of the top Yukawa coupling is pointed out.

Signs of Composite Higgs Pair Production at Next-to-Leading Order

In composite Higgs models the Higgs boson arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson from a strongly-interacting sector. Fermion mass generation is possible through partial compositeness accompanied by the appearance of new heavy fermionic resonances. The Higgs couplings to the Standard Model (SM) particles and between the Higgs bosons themselves are modified with respect to the SM. Higgs pair production is sensitive to the trilinear Higgs self-coupling but also to anomalous couplings like the novel 2-Higgs-2-fermion coupling emerging in composite Higgs models. The QCD corrections to SM Higgs boson pair production are known to be large. In this paper we compute, in the limit of heavy loop particle masses, the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to Higgs pair production in composite Higgs models without and with new heavy fermions. The relative QCD corrections are found to be almost insensitive both to the compositeness of the Higgs boson and to the details of the heavy fermion spectrum, since the leading order cross section dominantly factorizes. With the obtained results we investigate the question if, taking into account Higgs coupling constraints, new physics could first be seen in Higgs pair production. We find this to be the case in the high-luminosity option of the LHC for composite Higgs models with heavy fermions. We also investigate the invariant mass distributions at NLO QCD. While they are sensitive to the Higgs non-linearities and hence anomalous couplings, the influence of the heavy fermions is much less pronounced.

Light stop decays into $W b \tildeχ_1^0$ near the kinematic threshold

We investigate the decays of the light stop in scenarios with the lightest neutralino $\tildeχ_1^0$ being the lightest supersymmetric particle, including flavour-violating (FV) effects. We analyse the region where the three-body decay $\tilde{t}_1\to W b \tildeχ_1^0$ is kinematically allowed and provide a proper description of the transition region between the three-body decay and the four-body decay $\tilde{t}_1 \to\tildeχ_1^0 b f \bar{f}'$. The improved treatment has been implemented in the Fortran package {\tt SUSY-HIT} and is used for the analysis of this region. A scan over the parameter range including all relevant experimental constraints reveals that the FV two-body decay into charm and $\tildeχ_1^0$ can be as important as the three-, respectively, four-body decays if not dominant and therefore should be taken into account in order to complete the experimental searches for the light stop.

NLO QCD Corrections to Higgs Pair Production including Dimension-6 Operators

New Physics that becomes relevant at some high scale $Λ$ beyond the experimental reach, can be described in the effective theory approach by adding higher-dimensional operators to the Standard Model (SM) Lagrangian. In Higgs pair production through gluon fusion, which gives access to the trilinear Higgs self-coupling, this leads not only to modifications of the SM couplings but also induces novel couplings not present in the SM. For a proper prediction of the cross section, higher order QCD corrections that are important for this process, have to be taken into account. The various higher-dimensional contributions are affected differently by the QCD corrections. In this paper, we provide the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to Higgs pair production including dimension-6 operators in the limit of large top quark masses. Depending on the dimension-6 coefficients entering the Lagrangian, the new operators affect the relative NLO QCD corrections by several per cent, while modifying the cross section by up to an order of magnitude.

Effective Lagrangian for a light Higgs-like scalar

We reconsider the effective Lagrangian that describes a light Higgs-like boson and better clarify a few issues which were not exhaustively addressed in the previous literature. In particular we highlight the strategy to determine whether the dynamics responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking is weakly or strongly interacting. We also discuss how the effective Lagrangian can be implemented into automatic tools for the calculation of Higgs decay rates and production cross sections.

Two-Loop Contributions of the Order $\mathcal{O}(α_tα_s)$ to the Masses of the Higgs Bosons in the CP-Violating NMSSM

We provide the two-loop corrections to the Higgs boson masses of the CP-violating NMSSM in the Feynman diagrammatic approach with vanishing external momentum at ${\cal O} (α_t α_s)$. The adopted renormalization scheme is a mixture between $\overline{\text{DR}}$ and on-shell conditions. Additionally, the renormalization of the top/stop sector is provided both for the $\overline{\text{DR}}$ and the on-shell scheme. The calculation is performed in the gaugeless limit. We find that the two-loop corrections compared to the one-loop corrections are of the order of 5-10\%, depending on the top/stop renormalization scheme. The theoretical error on the Higgs boson masses is reduced due to the inclusion of these higher order corrections.

Vector-like Bottom Quarks in Composite Higgs Models

Like many other models, Composite Higgs Models feature the existence of heavy vector-like quarks. Mixing effects between the Standard Model fields and the heavy states, which can be quite large in case of the top quark, imply deviations from the SM. In this work we investigate the possibility of heavy bottom partners. We show that they can have a significant impact on electroweak precision observables and the current Higgs results if there is a sizeable mixing with the bottom quark. We explicitly check that the constraints from the measurement of the CKM matrix element $V_{tb}$ are fulfilled, and we test the compatibility with the electroweak precision observables. In particular we evaluate the constraint from the $Z$ coupling to left-handed bottom quarks. General formulae have been derived which include the effects of new bottom partners in the loop corrections to this coupling and which can be applied to other models with similar particle content. Furthermore, the constraints from direct searches for heavy states at the LHC and from the Higgs search results have been included in our analysis. The best agreement with all the considered constraints is achieved for medium to large compositeness of the left-handed top and bottom quarks.

Higher Order Corrections to the Trilinear Higgs Self-Couplings in the Real NMSSM

After the discovery of a Higgs-like boson by the LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS, it is of crucial importance to determine its properties in order to not only identify it as the boson responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking but also to clarify the question if it is a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson or the Higgs particle of some extension beyond the SM as {\it e.g.} supersymmetry. In this context, the precise prediction of the Higgs parameters as masses and couplings play a crucial role for the proper distinction between different models. In extension of previous works on the loop-corrected Higgs boson masses of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the SM (NMSSM), we present here the calculation of the loop-corrected trilinear NMSSM Higgs self-couplings. The loop corrections turn out to have a substantial impact on the decay widths of Higgs-to-Higgs decays and on the production cross section of Higgs pairs via gluon fusion. They are therefore indispensable for the correct interpretation of the experimental Higgs results.

Natural NMSSM Higgs Bosons

We study the phenomenology of Higgs bosons close to 126 GeV within the scale invariant unconstrained next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM), focusing on the regions of parameter space favoured by low fine-tuning considerations, namely stop masses of order 400 GeV to 1 TeV and an effective $μ$ parameter between 100-200 GeV, with large (but perturbative) $λ$ and low $\tan β=$2-4. We perform scans over the above parameter space, focusing on the observable Higgs cross sections into $γγ$, $WW$, $ZZ$, $bb$, $ττ$ final states, and study the correlations between these observables. We show that the $γγ$ signal strength may be enhanced up to a factor of about two not only due to the effect of singlet-doublet mixing, which occurs more often when the 126 GeV Higgs boson is the next-to-lightest CP-even one, but also due to light stops (and to a lesser extent light chargino and charged Higgs loops). There may be also smaller enhancements in the Higgs decay channels into $WW$, $ZZ$, correlated with the $γγ$ enhancement. However there is no such correlation observed involving the Higgs decay channels into $bb$, $ττ$. The requirement of having perturbative couplings up to the GUT scale favours the interpretation of the 126 GeV Higgs boson as being the second lightest NMSSM CP-even state, which can decay into pairs of lighter neutralinos, CP-even or CP-odd Higgs bosons, leading to characteristic signatures of the NMSSM. In a non-negligible part of the parameter range the increase in the $γγ$ rate is due to the superposition of rates from nearly degenerate Higgs bosons. Resolving these Higgs bosons would rule out the Standard Model, and provide evidence for the NMSSM.

Probing for Invisible Higgs Decays with Global Fits

We demonstrate by performing a global fit on Higgs signal strength data that large invisible branching ratios Br_{inv} for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs particle are currently consistent with the experimental hints of a scalar resonance at the mass scale m_h ~ 124 GeV. For this mass scale, we find Br_{inv} < 0.64 (95 % CL) from a global fit to individual channel signal strengths supplied by ATLAS, CMS and the Tevatron collaborations. Novel tests that can be used to improve the prospects of experimentally discovering the existence of a Br_{inv} with future data are proposed. These tests are based on the combination of all visible channel Higgs signal strengths, and allow us to examine the required reduction in experimental and theoretical errors in this data that would allow a more significantly bounded invisible branching ratio to be experimentally supported. We examine in some detail how our conclusions and method are affected when a scalar resonance at this mass scale has couplings deviating from the SM ones.

Composite Higgs Boson Pair Production at the LHC

The measurement of the trilinear and quartic Higgs self-couplings is necessary for the reconstruction of the Higgs potential. This way the Higgs mechanism as the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking can be tested. The couplings are accessible in multi-Higgs production processes at the LHC. In this paper we investigate the prospects of measuring the trilinear Higgs coupling in composite Higgs models. In these models, the Higgs boson emerges as a pseudo-Goldstone boson of a strongly interacting sector, and the Higgs potential is generated by loops of the Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons and fermions. The Higgs self-couplings are modified compared to the SM and controlled by the compositeness parameter $ξ$ in addition to the Higgs boson mass. We construct areas of sensitivity to the trilinear Higgs coupling in the relevant parameter space for various final states.
