Schatten-von Neumann properties for Hörmander classes on compact Lie groups

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group of dimension $n.$ In this work we characterise the membership of classical pseudo-differential operators on $G$ in the trace class ideal $S_{1}(L^2(G)),$ as well as in the setting of the Schatten ideals $S_{r}(L^2(G)),$ for all $r>0.$ In particular, we deduce Schatten characterisations of elliptic pseudo-differential operators of $(ρ,δ)$-type for the large range $0\leq δ<ρ\leq 1.$ Additional necessary and sufficient conditions are given in terms of the matrix-valued symbols of the operators, which are global functions on the phase space $G\times \widehat{G},$ with the momentum variables belonging to the unitary dual $\widehat{G}$ of $G$. In terms of the parameters $(ρ,δ),$ on the torus $\mathbb{T}^n,$ we demonstrate the sharpness of our results showing the existence of atypical operators in the exotic class $Ψ^{-\varkappa}_{0,0}(\mathbb{T}^n),$ $\varkappa>0,$ belonging to all the Schatten ideals. Additional order criteria are given in the setting of classical pseudo-differential operators. We present also some open problems in this setting.

Symmetry of positive solutions for Lane-Emden systems involving the Logarithmic Laplacian

We study the Lane-Emden system involving the logarithmic Laplacian: $$ \begin{cases} \ \mathcal{L}_Δu(x)=v^{p}(x) ,& x\in\mathbb{R}^{n},\\ \ \mathcal{L}_Δv(x)=u^{q}(x) ,& x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, \end{cases} $$ where $p,q>1$ and $\mathcal{L}_Δ$ denotes the Logarithmic Laplacian arising as a formal derivative $\partial_s|_{s=0}(-Δ)^s$ of fractional Laplacians at $s=0.$ By using a direct method of moving planes for the logarithmic Laplacian, we obtain the symmetry and monotonicity of the positive solutions to the Lane-Emden system. We also establish some key ingredients needed in order to apply the method of moving planes such as the maximum principle for anti-symmetric functions, the narrow region principle, and decay at infinity. Further, we discuss such results for a generalized system of the Lane-Emden type involving the logarithmic Laplacian.

Björk-Sjölin condition for strongly singular convolution operators on graded Lie groups

In this work we extend the $L^1$-Björk-Sjölin theory of strongly singular convolution operators to arbitrary graded Lie groups. Our criteria are presented in terms of the oscillating Hörmander condition due to Björk and Sjölin of the kernel of the operator, and the decay of its group Fourier transform is measured in terms of the infinitesimal representation of an arbitrary Rockland operator. The historical result by Björk and Sjölin is re-obtained in the case of the Euclidean space.

Boundedness of oscillating singular integrals on Lie groups of polynomial growth

We investigate the boundedness of oscillating singular integrals on Lie groups of polynomial growth in order to extend the classical oscillating conditions due to Fefferman and Stein for the boundedness of oscillating convolution operators. Kernel criteria are presented in terms of a fixed sub-Riemannian structure on the group induced by a sub-Laplacian associated to a Hörmander system of vector fields. In the case where the group is graded, kernel criteria are presented in terms of the Fourier analysis associated to an arbitrary Rockland operator.

Discrete Time-Dependent Wave Equations II. Semiclassical Fractional Klein-Gordon Equation

In this paper, we consider a semiclassical version of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation on the lattice, $h{\mathbb{Z}}^n.$ Contrary to the Euclidean case that was considered in [2], the discrete fractional Klein-Gordon equation is well-posed in $\ell^2(h{\mathbb{Z}}^n).$ However, we also recover the well-posedness results in the certain Sobolev spaces in the limit of the semiclassical parameter $h\rightarrow 0.$

Drift diffusion equations with fractional diffusion on compact Lie groups

In this work we investigate the well-posedness for difussion equations associated to subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups. The diffusion by strongly elliptic operators is considered as a special case and in particular the fractional diffusion with respect to the Laplacian. The general case is studied within the Hörmander classes associated to a sub-Riemannian structure on the group (encoded by a Hörmander system of vector fields). Applications to diffusion equations for fractional sub-Laplacians, fractional powers of more general subelliptic operators, and the corresponding quasi-geostrophic model with drift $D$ are investigated. Examples on SU(2) for diffusion problems with fractional diffusion are analysed.

Generalised Hardy type and Rellich type inequalities on the Heisenberg group

This paper is primarily devoted to a class of interpolation inequalities of Hardy and Rellich types on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. Consequently, several weighted Hardy type, Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl uncertainty principle and Hardy-Rellich type inqualities are established on $\mathbb{H}^n$. Moreover, new weighted Sobolev type embeddings are derived. Finally, an integral inequality for vector fields in a domain of the Heisenberg group is obtained, leading to several specific weighted Hardy type inequalities by making careful choices of vector fields.

Titchmarsh theorems on Damek-Ricci spaces via moduli of continuity of higher order

A classical theorem of Titchmarsh relates the $L^2$-Lipschitz functions and decay of the Fourier transform of the functions. In this note, we prove the Titchmarsh theorem for Damek-Ricci space (also known as harmonic $NA$ groups) via moduli of continuity of higher orders. We also prove an analogue of another Titchmarsh theorem which provides integrability properties of the Fourier transform for functions in the Hölder Lipschitz spaces.

Determinants and Plemelj-Smithies formulas

We establish Plemelj-Smithies formulas for determinants in different algebras of operators. In particular we define a Poincaré type determinant for operators on the torus $\Tn$ and deduce formulas for determinants of periodic pseudo-differential operators in terms of the symbol. On the other hand, by applying a recently introduced notion of invariant operators relative to fixed decompositions of Hilbert spaces we also obtain formulae for determinants with respect to the trace class. The analysis makes use of the corresponding notion of full matrix-symbol. We also derive explicit formulas for determinants associated to elliptic operators on compact manifolds, compact Lie groups, and on homogeneous vector bundles over compact homogeneous manifolds.

Expansion of traces and Dixmier traceability for global pseudo-differential operators on manifolds with boundary

Given a smooth manifold $M$ (with or without boundary), in this paper we study the regularisation of traces for the global pseudo-differential calculus in the context of non-harmonic analysis. Indeed, using the global pseudo-differential calculus on manifolds (with or without boundary) developed in [30], the Calderón-Vaillancourt Theorem and the global functional calculus in [6], we determine the singularity orders in the regularisation of traces and the sharp regularity orders for the Dixmier traceability of the global Hörmander classes. Our analysis (free of coordinate systems) allows us to obtain non-harmonic analogues of several classical results arising from the microlocal analysis of regularised traces for pseudo-differential operators with symbols defined by localisations.

Fourier multipliers for Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on compact Lie groups

We investigate the boundedness of Fourier multipliers on a compact Lie group when acting on Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. Criteria are given in terms of the Hörmander-Mihlin-Marcinkiewicz condition. In our analysis, we use the difference structure of the unitary dual of a compact Lie group. Our results cover the sharp Hörmander-Mihlin theorem on Lebesgue spaces and also other historical results on the subject.

Fractional Klein-Gordon equation with singular mass

We consider a space-fractional wave equation with a singular mass term depending on the position and prove that it is very weak well-posed. The uniqueness is proved in some appropriate sense. Moreover, we prove the consistency of the very weak solution with classical solutions when they exist. In order to study the behaviour of the very weak solution near the singularities of the coefficient, some numerical experiments are conducted where the appearance of a wall effect for the singular masses of the strength of $δ^2$ is observed.

Fractional Schrödinger Equation with singular potentials of higher-order

In this paper, the space-fractional Schrödinger equations with singular potentials are studied. Delta-like or even higher-order singularities are allowed. By using the regularising techniques, we introduce a family of 'weakened' solutions, calling them very weak solutions. The existence, uniqueness and consistency results are proved in an appropriate sense. Numerical simulations are done, and a particle accumulating effect is observed in the singular cases. From the mathematical point of view, a "splitting of the strong singularity" phenomena is also observed.

Global Functional calculus, lower/upper bounds and evolution equations on manifolds with boundary

Given a smooth manifold $M$ (with or without boundary), in this paper we establish a global functional calculus (without the standard assumption that the operators are classical pseudo-differential operators) and the Gårding inequality for global pseudo-differential operators associated with boundary value problems. The analysis that we follow is free of local coordinate systems. Applications of the Gårding inequality to the global solvability for a class of evolution problems are also considered.

Littlewood-Paley theorem, Nikolskii inequality, Besov spaces, Fourier and spectral multipliers on graded Lie groups

In this paper we investigate Besov spaces on graded Lie groups. We prove a Nikolskii type inequality (or the Reverse Hölder inequality) on graded Lie groups and as consequence we obtain embeddings of Besov spaces. We prove a version of the Littlewood-Paley theorem on graded Lie groups. The results are applied to obtain embedding properties of Besov spaces and multiplier theorems for both spectral and Fourier multipliers in Besov spaces on graded Lie groups. In particular, we give a number of sufficient conditions for the boundedness of Fourier multipliers in Besov spaces.

The heat equation with strongly singular potentials

In this paper, we consider the heat equation with strongly singular potentials and prove that it has a "very weak solution". Moreover, we show the uniqueness and consistency results in some appropriate sense. The cases of positive and negative potentials are studied. Numerical simulations are done: one suggests so-called "laser heating and cooling" effects depending on a sign of the potential. The latter is justified by physical observations.

Well-posedness of Tricomi-Gellerstedt-Keldysh-type fractional elliptic problems

In this paper Tricomi-Gellerstedt-Keldysh-type fractional elliptic equations are studied. The results on the well-posedness of fractional elliptic boundary value problems are obtained for general positive operators with discrete spectrum and for Fourier multipliers with positive symbols. As examples, we discuss results in half-cylinder, star-shaped graph, half-space and other domains.

$L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of pseudo-differential operators on smooth manifolds and its applications to nonlinear equations

In this paper we study the boundedness of global pseudo-differential operators on smooth manifolds. By using the notion of global symbol we extend a classical condition of Hörmander type to guarantee the $L^p$-$L^q$-boundedness of global operators. First we investigate $L^p$-boundedness of pseudo-differential operators in view of the Hörmander-Mihlin condition. We also prove $L^\infty$-$BMO$ estimates for pseudo-differential operators. Later, we concentrate our investigation to settle $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of the Fourier multipliers and pseudo-differential operators for the range $1<p \leq 2 \leq q<\infty.$ On the way to achieve our goal of $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness we prove two classical inequalities, namely, Paley inequality and Hausdorff-Young-Paley inequality for smooth manifolds. Finally, we present the applications of our boundedness theorems to the well-posedness properties of different types of the nonlinear partial differential equations.

A comparison principle for higher order nonlinear hypoelliptic heat operators on graded Lie groups

In this paper we present a comparison principle for higher order nonlinear hypoelliptic heat operators on graded Lie groups. Moreover, using the comparison principle we obtain blow-up type results and global in $t$-boundedness of solutions of nonlinear equations for the heat $p$-sub-Laplacian on stratified Lie groups. In particular, this paper generalises and extends previous results obtained by the first author and Suragan in [RS18].

A note on $K$-functional, Modulus of smoothness, Jackson theorem and Nikolskii-Stechkin inequality on Damek-Ricci spaces

In this paper we study approximation theorems for $L^2$-space on Damek-Ricci spaces. We prove direct Jackson theorem of approximations for the modulus of smoothness defined using spherical mean operator on Damek-Ricci spaces. We also prove Nikolskii-Stechkin inequality. To prove these inequalities we use functions of bounded spectrum as a tool of approximation. Finally, as an application, we prove equivalence of the $K$-functional and modulus of smoothness for Damek-Ricci spaces.

A parallel hybrid implementation of the 2D acoustic wave equation

In this paper, we propose a hybrid parallel programming approach for a numerical solution of a two-dimensional acoustic wave equation using an implicit difference scheme for a single computer. The calculations are carried out in an implicit finite difference scheme. First, we transform the differential equation into an implicit finite-difference equation and then using the ADI method, we split the equation into two sub-equations. Using the cyclic reduction algorithm, we calculate an approximate solution. Finally, we change this algorithm to parallelize on GPU, GPU+OpenMP, and Hybrid (GPU+OpenMP+MPI) computing platforms. The special focus is on improving the performance of the parallel algorithms to calculate the acceleration based on the execution time. We show that the code that runs on the hybrid approach gives the expected results by comparing our results to those obtained by running the same simulation on a classical processor core, CUDA, and CUDA+OpenMP implementations.

Fourier multipliers on graded Lie groups

In this paper we study multipliers on graded nilpotent Lie groups defined via group Fourier transform. More precisely, we show that Hörmander type conditions on the Fourier multipliers imply $L^p$-boundedness. We express these conditions using difference operators and positive Rockland operators. We also obtain a more refined condition using Sobolev spaces on the dual of the group which are defined and studied in this paper.

Hardy and Rellich inequalities for anisotropic p-sub-Laplacians

In this paper we establish the subelliptic Picone type identities. As consequences, we obtain Hardy and Rellich type inequalities for anisotropic p-sub- Laplacians which are operators of the form $$ \mathcal{L}_p f := \sum_{i=1}^{N}X_i(|X_if|^{p_i-2}X_i f), \quad 1<p_i< \infty, $$ where $X_i, i=1,\ldots, N,$ are the generators of the first stratum of a stratified (Lie) group. Moreover, analogues of Hardy type inequalities with multiple singularities and many-particle Hardy type inequalities are obtained on stratified groups.

Hardy-Littlewood inequality and $L^p$-$L^q$ Fourier multipliers on compact hypergroups

This paper deals with the inequalities devoted to the comparison between the norm of a function on a compact hypergroup and the norm of its Fourier coefficients. We prove the classical Paley inequality in the setting of compact hypergroups which further gives the Hardy-Littlewood and Hausdorff-Young-Paley (Pitt) inequalities in the noncommutative context. We establish Hörmander's $L^p$-$L^q$ Fourier multiplier theorem on compact hypergroups for $1<p \leq 2 \leq q<\infty$ as an application of Hausdorff-Young-Paley inequality. We examine our results for the hypergroups constructed from the conjugacy classes of compact Lie groups and for a class of countable compact hypergroups.

Initial, inner and inner-boundary problems for a fractional differential equation

While it is known that one can consider the Cauchy problem for evolution equations with Caputo derivatives, the situation for the initial value problems for the Riemann-Liouville derivatives is less understood. In this paper we propose new type initial, inner and inner-boundary value problems for fractional differential equations with the Riemann-Liouville derivatives. The results on the existence and uniqueness are proved, and conditions on the solvability are found. The well-posedness of the new type initial, inner and inner-boundary conditions are also discussed. Moreover, we give explicit formulas for the solutions. As an application fractional partial differential equations for general positive operators are studied.

On a non-local problem for a multi-term fractional diffusion-wave equation

This paper deals with the multi-term generalisation of the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation for general operators with discrete spectrum, as well as for positive hypoelliptic operators, with homogeneous multi-point time-nonlocal conditions. Several examples of the settings where our nonlocal problems are applicable are given. The results for the discrete spectrum are also applied to treat the case of general homogeneous hypoelliptic left-invariant differential operators on general graded Lie groups, by using the representation theory of the group. For all these problems, we show the existence, uniqueness, and the explicit representation formulae for the solutions.

Self-similar solutions of some model degenerate partial differential equations of the second, third and fourth order

When studying boundary value problems for some partial differential equations arising in applied mathematics, we often have to study the solution of a system of partial differential equations satisfied by hypergeometric functions and find explicit linearly independent solutions for the system. In this study, we construct self-similar solutions of some model degenerate partial differential equations of the second, third, and fourth order. These self-similar solutions are expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions.

Subelliptic Gevrey spaces

In this paper, we define and study Gevrey spaces associated with a Hörmander family of (globally defined) vector fields and its corresponding sub-Laplacian. We show some natural relations between the various Gevrey spaces in this setting on general manifolds, and more particular properties on Lie groups with polynomial growth of the volume. In the case of the Heisenberg group and of $SU(2)$, we show that all our descriptions coincide.

Subelliptic Wave Equations with Log-Lipschitz coefficients

In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the wave equations for sums of squares of left invariant vector fields on compact Lie groups and also for hypoelliptic homogeneous left-invariant differential operators on graded Lie groups (the positive Rockland operators), when the time-dependent propagation speed satisfies a Log-Lipschitz condition. We prove the well-posedness in the associated Sobolev spaces exhibiting a finite loss of regularity with respect to the initial data, which is not true when the propagation speed is a ${\rm H\ddot{o}lder}$ function. We also indicate an extension to general Hilbert spaces. In the special case of the Laplacian on $\mathbb R^n$, the results boil down to the celebrated result of Colombini-De Giorgi and Spagnolo.

The Harmonic Oscillator on the Heisenberg Group

In this note we present a notion of harmonic oscillator on the Heisenberg group $\mathbf{H}_n$ which forms the natural analogue of the harmonic oscillator on $\mathbb{R}^n$ under a few reasonable assumptions: the harmonic oscillator on $\mathbf{H}_n$ should be a negative sum of squares of operators related to the sub-Laplacian on $\mathbf{H}_n$, essentially self-adjoint with purely discrete spectrum, and its eigenvectors should be smooth functions and form an orthonormal basis of $L^2(\mathbf{H}_n)$. This approach leads to a differential operator on $\mathbf{H}_n$ which is determined by the (stratified) Dynin-Folland Lie algebra. We provide an explicit expression for the operator as well as an asymptotic estimate for its eigenvalues.

Tsunami propagation for singular topographies

We consider a tsunami wave equation with singular coefficients and prove that it has a very weak solution. Moreover, we show the uniqueness results and consistency theorem of the very weak solution with the classical one in some appropriate sense. Numerical experiments are done for the families of regularised problems in one- and two-dimensional cases. In particular, the appearance of a substantial second wave is observed, travelling in the opposite direction from the point/line of singularity. Its structure and strength are analysed numerically. In addition, for the two-dimensional tsunami wave equation, we develop GPU computing algorithms to reduce the computational cost.

Global properties of vector fields on compact Lie groups in Komatsu classes. II. Normal forms

Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be compact Lie groups, $X_1 \in \mathfrak{g}_1$, $X_2 \in \mathfrak{g}_2$ and consider the operator \begin{equation*} L_{aq} = X_1 + a(x_1)X_2 + q(x_1,x_2), \end{equation*} where $a$ and $q$ are ultradifferentiable functions in the sense of Komatsu, and $a$ is real-valued. We characterize completely the global hypoellipticity and the global solvability of $L_{aq}$ in the sense of Komatsu. For this, we present a conjugation between $L_{aq}$ and a constant-coefficient operator that preserves these global properties in Komatsu classes. We also present examples of globally hypoelliptic and globally solvable operators on $\mathbb{T}^1\times \mathbb{S}^3$ and $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{S}^3$ in the sense of Komatsu. In particular, we give examples of differential operators which are not globally $C^\infty$-solvable, but are globally solvable in Gevrey spaces.

Pseudo-differential operators with nonlinear quantizing functions

In this paper we develop the calculus of pseudo-differential operators corresponding to the quantizations of the form $$ Au(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}e^{i(x-y)\cdotξ}σ(x+τ(y-x),ξ)u(y)dydξ, $$ where $τ:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^n$ is a general function. In particular, for the linear choices $τ(x)=0$, $τ(x)=x$, and $τ(x)=\frac{x}{2}$ this covers the well-known Kohn-Nirenberg, anti-Kohn-Nirenberg, and Weyl quantizations, respectively. Quantizations of such type appear naturally in the analysis on nilpotent Lie groups for polynomial functions $τ$ and here we investigate the corresponding calculus in the model case of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also give examples of nonlinear $τ$ appearing on the polarised and non-polarised Heisenberg groups, inspired by the recent joint work with Marius Mantoiu.

Non-local initial problem for second order time-fractional and space-singular equation

In this work, we consider an initial problem for second order partial differential equations with Caputo fractional derivatives in the time-variable and Bessel operator in the space-variable. For non-local boundary conditions, we present a solution of this problem in an explicit form representing it by the Fourier-Bessel series. The obtained solution is written in terms of multinomial Mittag-Leffler functions and first kind Bessel functions.

Anisotropic $L^{2}$-weighted Hardy and $L^{2}$-Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities

We establish sharp remainder terms of the $L^{2}$-Caffarelli-Kohn-Niren\-berg inequalities on homogeneous groups, yielding the inequalities with best constants. Our methods also give new sharp Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type inequalities in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with arbitrary quasi-norms. We also present explicit examples to illustrate our results for different weights and in abelian cases.

Approximation property and nuclearity on mixed-norm $L^p$, modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces

In this paper we first prove the metric approximation property for weighted mixed-norm $L_w^{(p_1,\dots ,p_n)}$ spaces. Using Gabor frame representation this implies that the same property holds in weighted modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces. As a consequence, Grothendieck's theory becomes applicable, and we give criteria for nuclearity and $r$-nuclearity for operators acting on these space as well as derive the corresponding trace formulae. Finally, we apply the notion of nuclearity to functions of the harmonic oscillator on modulation spaces.

Critical Hardy inequalities

We prove a range of critical Hardy inequalities and uncertainty type principles on one of most general subclasses of nilpotent Lie groups, namely the class of homogeneous groups. Moreover, we establish a new type of critical Hardy inequality and prove Hardy-Sobolev type inequalities. Most of the obtained estimates are new already for the case of $\mathbb R^{n}$. For example, for any $f\in C_{0}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{n}\backslash\{0\})$ our results imply the range of critical Hardy inequalities of the form $$\qquad \underset{R>0}{\sup}\left\|\frac{f-f_{R}}{|x|^{\frac{n}{p}}{\log}\frac{R}{|x|}}\right\|_{L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})}\leq \frac{p}{p-1}\left\| \frac{1}{|x|^{\frac{n}{p}-1}} \nabla f\right\|_{L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})},\quad 1<p<\infty,$$ where $f_{R}=f(R\frac{x}{|x|})$, with sharp constant $\frac{p}{p-1}$, recovering the known cases of $p=n$ and $p=2$. Moreover, our results also imply a new type of a critical Hardy inequality of the form $$\left\|\frac{f}{|x|}\right\|_{L^{n}(\mathbb{R}^{n})}\leq n\left\|(\log|x|)\nabla f\right\|_{L^{n}\mathbb{R}^{n})}, $$ for all $f\in C_{0}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{n}\backslash\{0\}),$ where the constant $n$ is sharp. However, homogeneous groups provide a perfect degree of generality to talk about such estimates without using specific properties of $\mathbb R^n$ or of the Euclidean distance.

Eigenfunction expansions of ultradifferentiable functions and ultradistributions

In this paper we give a global characterisation of classes of ultradifferentiable functions and corresponding ultradistributions on a compact manifold $X$. The characterisation is given in terms of the eigenfunction expansion of an elliptic operator on $X$. This extends the result for analytic functions on compact manifold by Seeley, and the characterisation of Gevrey functions and Gevrey ultradistributions on compact Lie groups and homogeneous spaces by the authors.

Grothendieck-Lidskii trace formula for mixed-norm and variable Lebesgue spaces

In this note we present the metric approximation property for weighted mixed-norm $L_w^{(p_1,\dots ,p_n)}$ and variable exponent Lebesgue type spaces. As a consequence, this also implies the same property for modulation and Wiener-Amalgam spaces. We then characterise nuclear operators on such spaces and state the corresponding Grothendieck-Lidskii trace formulae. We apply the obtained results to derive criteria for nuclearity and trace formulae for periodic operators on $\mathbb R^n$ and functions of the harmonic oscillator in terms of the global symbol.

Hardy-Littlewood inequalities and Fourier multipliers on SU(2)

In this paper we prove a noncommutative version of Hardy-Littlewood inequalities relating a function and its Fourier coefficients on the group $SU(2)$. As a consequence, we use it to obtain lower bounds for the $L^p-L^q$ norms of Fourier multipliers on the group $SU(2)$, for $1 < p \leq 2 \leq q < 1$. In addition, we give upper bounds of a similar form, analogous to the known results on the torus, but now in the noncommutative setting of $SU(2)$.

Layer potentials, Green's formulae, Kac's problem, and refined Hardy inequality on homogeneous Carnot groups

We propose the analogues of boundary layer potentials for the sub-Laplacian on homogeneous Carnot groups/stratified Lie groups and prove continuity results for them. In particular, we show continuity of the single layer potential and establish the Plemelj type jump relations for the double layer potential. We prove sub-Laplacian adapted versions of the Stokes theorem as well as of Green's first and second formulae on homogeneous Carnot groups. Several applications to boundary value problems are given. As another consequence, we derive formulae for traces of the Newton potential for the sub-Laplacian to piecewise smooth surfaces. Using this we construct and study a nonlocal boundary value problem for the sub-Laplacian extending to the setting of the homogeneous Carnot groups M. Kac's "principle of not feeling the boundary". We also obtain similar results for higher powers of the sub-Laplacian. Finally, as another application, we prove refined versions of Hardy's inequality and of the uncertainty principle.

Local Hardy and Rellich inequalities for sums of squares of vector fields

We prove local refined versions of Hardy's and Rellich's inequalities as well as of uncertainty principles for sums of squares of vector fields on bounded sets of smooth manifolds under certain assumptions on the vector fields. We also give some explicit examples, in particular, for sums of squares of vector fields on Euclidean spaces and for sub-Laplacians on stratified Lie groups.

Nonharmonic analysis of boundary value problems without WZ condition

In this work we continue our research on nonharmonic analysis of boundary value problems as initiated in our recent paper (IMRN 2016). There, we assumed that the eigenfunctions of the model operator on which the construction is based do not have zeros. In this paper we have weakened this condition extending the applicability of the developed pseudo-differential analysis. Also, we do not assume that the underlying set is bounded.

On $C^\infty$ well-posedness of hyperbolic systems with multiplicities

In this paper we study first order hyperbolic systems with multiple characteristics (weakly hyperbolic) and time-dependent analytic coefficients. The main question is when the Cauchy problem for such systems is well-posed in $C^{\infty}$ and in $\mathcal{D}'$. We prove that the analyticity of the coefficients combined with suitable hypotheses on the eigenvalues guarantee the $C^\infty$ well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem. This result is an extension to systems of the analogous results for scalar equations recently obtained by Jannelli and Taglialatela in \cite{JT} and by the authors in \cite{GR:13}.

On first and second eigenvalues of Riesz transforms in spherical and hyperbolic geometries

In this note we prove an analogue of the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequality, that is, that the geodesic ball is a maximiser of the first eigenvalue of some convolution type integral operators, on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ and on the real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n}$. It completes the study of such question for complete, connected, simply connected Riemannian manifolds of constant sectional curvature. We also discuss an extremum problem for the second eigenvalue on $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ and prove the Hong-Krahn-Szegö type inequality. The main examples of the considered convolution type operators are the Riesz transforms with respect to the geodesic distance of the space.

Schatten classes and traces on compact groups

In this paper we present symbolic criteria for invariant operators on compact topological groups $G$ characterising the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_{r}(L^{2}(G))$ for all $0<r\leq\infty$. Since it is known that for pseudo-differential operators criteria in terms of kernels may be less effective (Carleman's example), our criteria are given in terms of the operators' symbols defined on the noncommutative analogue of the phase space $G\times\hat{G}$, where $G$ is a compact topological (or Lie) group and $\hat{G}$ is its unitary dual. We also show results concerning general non-invariant operators as well as Schatten properties on Sobolev spaces. A trace formula is derived for operators in the Schatten class $S_{1}(L^{2}(G))$. Examples are given for Bessel potentials associated to sub-Laplacians (sums of squares) on compact Lie groups, as well as for powers of the sub-Laplacian and for other non-elliptic operators on SU(2)$\simeq\mathbb S^3$ and on SO(3).

Fourier multipliers, symbols and nuclearity on compact manifolds

The notion of invariant operators, or Fourier multipliers, is discussed for densely defined operators on Hilbert spaces, with respect to a fixed partition of the space into a direct sum of finite dimensional subspaces. As a consequence, given a compact manifold endowed with a positive measure, we introduce a notion of the operator's full symbol adapted to the Fourier analysis relative to a fixed elliptic operator. We give a description of Fourier multipliers, or of operators invariant relative to the elliptic operator. We apply these concepts to study Schatten classes of operators and to obtain a formula for the trace of trace class operators. We also apply it to provide conditions for operators between Lp-spaces to be r-nuclear in the sense of Grothendieck.

Global regularity properties for a class of Fourier integral operators

While the local $L^p$-boundedness of nondegeneral Fourier integral operators is known from the work of Seeger, Sogge and Stein, not so many results are available for the global boundedness on $L^p(\mathbb R^n)$. In this paper we give a sufficient condition for the global $L^p$-boundedness for a class of Fourier integral operators which includes many natural examples. We also describe a construction that can be used to deduce global results from the local ones. Hardy-Littlewood, Hausdorff-Young-Paley inequalities, and Lp-Lq Fourier multipliers on compact homogeneous manifolds

In this paper we prove new inequalities describing the relationship between the "size" of a function on a compact homogeneous manifold and the "size" of its Fourier coefficients. These inequalities can be viewed as noncommutative versions of the Hardy-Littlewood inequalities obtained by Hardy and Littlewood on the circle. For the example case of the group SU(2) we show that the obtained Hardy-Littlewood inequalities are sharp, yielding a criterion for a function to be in $L^p$ on SU(2) in terms of its Fourier coefficients. We also establish Paley and Hausdorff-Young-Paley inequalities on general compact homogeneous manifolds. The latter is applied to obtain conditions for the $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of Fourier multipliers for $1<p\leq 2\leq q<\infty$ on compact homogeneous manifolds as well as the $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of general (non-invariant) operators on compact Lie groups. We also record an abstract version of the Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem on totally ordered discrete sets, to be used in the proofs with different Plancherel measures on the unitary duals.

Isoperimetric inequalities for Schatten norms of Riesz potentials

In this note we prove that the ball is a maximiser of some Schatten $p$-norms of the Riesz potential operators among all domains of a given measure in $\mathbb R^{d}$. In particular, the result is valid for the polyharmonic Newton potential operator, which is related to a nonlocal boundary value problem for the poly-Laplacian extending the one considered by M. Kac in the case of the Laplacian, so we obtain and isoperimetric inequalities for its eigenvalues as well, namely, analogues of Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn and Hong-Krahn-Szegö inequalities.

Isoperimetric inequalities for the logarithmic potential operator

In this paper we prove that the disc is a maximiser of the Schatten $p$-norm of the logarithmic potential operator among all domains of a given measure in $\mathbb R^{2}$, for all even integers $2\leq p<\infty$. We also show that the equilateral triangle has the largest Schatten $p$-norm among all triangles of a given area. For the logarithmic potential operator on bounded open or triangular domains, we also obtain analogies of the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn or P{ó}lya inequalities, respectively. The logarithmic potential operator can be related to a nonlocal boundary value problem for the Laplacian, so we obtain isoperimetric inequalities for its eigenvalues as well.

Nonharmonic analysis of boundary value problems

In this paper we develop the global symbolic calculus of pseudo-differential operators generated by a boundary value problem for a given (not necessarily self-adjoint or elliptic) differential operator. For this, we also establish elements of a non-self-adjoint distribution theory and the corresponding biorthogonal Fourier analysis. We give applications of the developed analysis to obtain a-priori estimates for solutions of operators that are elliptic within the constructed calculus.

On hyperbolic systems with time dependent Hölder characteristics

In this paper we study the well-posedness of weakly hyperbolic systems with time dependent coefficients. We assume that the eigenvalues are low regular, in the sense that they are Hölder with respect to $t$. In the past these kind of systems have been investigated by Yuzawa \cite{Yu:05} and Kajitani \cite{KY:06} by employing semigroup techniques (Tanabe-Sobolevski method). Here, under a certain uniform property of the eigenvalues, we improve the Gevrey well-posedness result of \cite{Yu:05} and we obtain well-posedness in spaces of ultradistributions as well. Our main idea is a reduction of the system to block Sylvester form and then the formulation of suitable energy estimates inspired by the treatment of scalar equations in \cite{GR:11}

In this note we construct an integral boundary condition for the Kohn Laplacian in a given domain on the Heisenberg group extending to the setting of the Heisenberg group M. Kac's "principle of not feeling the boundary". This also amounts to finding the trace on smooth surfaces of the Newton potential associated to the Kohn Laplacian. We also obtain similar results for higher powers of the Kohn Laplacian.

Pseudo-differential operators, Wigner transform and Weyl systems on type I locally compact groups

Let $G$ be a unimodular type I second countable locally compact group and $\hat G$ its unitary dual. We introduce and study a global pseudo-differential calculus for operator-valued symbols defined on $G\times\hat G$, and its relations to suitably defined Wigner transforms and Weyl systems. We also unveil its connections with crossed products $C^*$-algebras associated to certain $C^*$-dynamical systems, and apply it to the spectral analysis of covariant families of operators. Applications are given to nilpotent Lie groups, in which case we relate quantizations with operator-valued and scalar-valued symbols.

Schatten classes, nuclearity and nonharmonic analysis on compact manifolds with boundary

Given a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$, in this paper we introduce a global symbolic calculus of pseudo-differential operators associated to $(M,\partial M)$. The symbols of operators with boundary conditions on $\partial M$ are defined in terms of the biorthogonal expansions in eigenfunctions of a fixed operator $L$ with the same boundary conditions on $\partial M$. The boundary $\partial M$ is allowed to have (arbitrary) singularities. As an application, several criteria for the membership in Schatten classes on $L^2(M)$ and $r$-nuclearity on $L^p(M)$ are obtained. We also describe a new addition to the Grothendieck-Lidskii formula in this setting. Examples and applications are given to operators on $M=[0,1]^n$ with non-periodic boundary conditions, and of operators with non-local boundary conditions.

Smoothing estimates for non-dispersive equations

This paper describes an approach to global smoothing problems for non-dispersive equations based on ideas of comparison principle and canonical transformation established in authors' previous paper, where dispersive equations were treated. For operators $a(D_x)$ of order $m$ satisfying the dispersiveness condition $\nabla a(ξ)\neq0$ for $ξ\not=0$, the global smoothing estimate $$ \|\langle x\rangle^{-s}|D_x|^{(m-1)/2}e^{ita(D_x)} φ(x)\|_{L^2(\mathbb R_t\times\mathbb R^n_x)} \leq C\|φ\|_{L^2(\mathbb R^n_x)} \quad {\rm(}s>1/2{\rm)} $$ is well-known, while it is also known to fail for non-dispersive operators. For the case when the dispersiveness breaks, we suggest the estimate in the form $$ \|{\langle{x}\rangle^{-s}|\nabla a(D_x)|^{1/2} e^{it a(D_x)}φ(x)}\|_{L^2({\mathbb R_t\times\mathbb R^n_x})} \leq C\|φ\|_{L^2({\mathbb R^n_x})}\quad{\rm(}s>1/2{\rm)} $$ which is equivalent to the usual estimate in the dispersive case and is also invariant under canonical transformations for the operator $a(D_x)$. We show that this estimate and its variants do continue to hold for a variety of non-dispersive operators $a(D_x)$, where $\nabla a(ξ)$ may become zero on some set. Moreover, other types of such estimates, and the case of time-dependent equations are also discussed.

A pseudo-differential calculus on the Heisenberg group

In this note we present a symbolic pseudo-differential calculus on the Heisenberg group. We particularise to this group our general construction [4,3,2] of pseudo-differential calculi on graded groups. The relation between the Weyl quantization and the representations of the Heisenberg group enables us to consider here scalar-valued symbols. We find that the conditions defining the symbol classes are similar but different to the ones in [1]. Applications are given to Schwartz hypoellipticity and to subelliptic estimates on the Heisenberg group.

Kernel and symbol criteria for Schatten classes and $r$-nuclearity on compact manifolds

In this note we present criteria on both symbols and integral kernels ensuring that the corresponding operators on compact manifolds belong to Schatten classes. A specific test for nuclearity is established as well as the corresponding trace formulae. In the special case of compact Lie groups, kernel criteria in terms of (locally and globally) hypoelliptic operators are also given. A notion of an invariant operator and its full symbol associated to an elliptic operator are introduced. Some applications to the study of $r$-nuclearity on $L^{p}$ spaces are also obtained.

Consequently, we establish embedding theorems between Besov spaces on compact homogeneous spaces, as well as embeddings between Besov spaces and Wiener and Beurling spaces. We also analyse Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and $β$-versions of Wiener and Beurling spaces and their embeddings, and interpolation properties of all these spaces.

Recent progress in smoothing estimates for evolution equations

This paper is a survey article of results and arguments from several of authors' papers, and it describes a new approach to global smoothing problems for dispersive and non-dispersive evolution equations based on ideas of comparison principle and canonical transforms. For operators $a(D_x)$ of order $m$ satisfying the dispersiveness condition $\nabla a(ξ)\neq0$, a range of smoothing estimates is established. Especially, time-global smoothing estimates for the operator $a(D_x)$ with lower order terms are the benefit of our new method. These estimates are known to fail for general non-dispersive operators. For the case when the dispersiveness breaks, we suggest a modification of the smoothing estimate. It is equivalent to the usual estimate in the dispersive case and is also invariant under canonical transformations for the operator $a(D_x)$. Moreover, it does continue to hold for a variety of non-dispersive operators $a(D_x)$, where $\nabla a(ξ)$ may become zero on some set. It is interesting that this method allows us to carry out a global microlocal reduction of equations to the translation invariance property of the Lebesgue measure.

Wave equation for sums of squares on compact Lie groups

In this paper we investigate the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the wave equation for sums of squares of vector fields on compact Lie groups. We obtain the loss of regularity for solutions to the Cauchy problem in local Sobolev spaces depending on the order to which the Hörmander condition is satisfied, but no loss in globally defined spaces. We also establish Gevrey well-posedness for equations with irregular coefficients and/or multiple characteristics. As in the Sobolev spaces, if formulated in local coordinates, we observe well-posedness with the loss of local Gevrey order depending on the order to which the Hörmander condition is satisfied.

They form an algebra of operators which shares many properties with the usual Hormander calculus.

Hyperbolic second order equations with non-regular time dependent coefficients

In this paper we study weakly hyperbolic second order equations with time dependent irregular coefficients. This means to assume that the coefficients are less regular than Hölder. The characteristic roots are also allowed to have multiplicities. For such equations, we describe the notion of a `very weak solution' adapted to the type of solutions that exist for regular coefficients. The construction is based on considering Friedrichs-type mollifiers of coefficients and corresponding classical solutions, and their quantitative behaviour in the regularising parameter. We show that even for distributional coefficients, the Cauchy problem does have a very weak solution, and that this notion leads to classical or ultradistributional solutions under conditions when such solutions also exist. In concrete applications, the dependence on the regularising parameter can be traced explicitly.

Lp-Nuclearity, traces, and Grothendieck-Lidskii formula on compact Lie groups

Given a compact Lie group $G$, in this paper we give symbolic criteria for operators to be nuclear and r-nuclear on Lp-spaces, with applications to distribution of eigenvalues and trace formulae. Since criteria in terms of kernels are often not effective in view of Carleman's example, in this paper we adopt the symbolic point of view. The criteria here are given in terms of the concept of matrix symbols defined on the non-commutative analogue of the phase space $G\times\hat{G}$, where $\hat{G}$ is the unitary dual of $G$.

Smoothing properties of inhomogeneous equations via canonical transforms

The paper describes a new approach to global smoothing problems for inhomogeneous dispersive evolution equations based on an idea of canonical transformation. In our previous papers, we introduced such a method to show global smoothing estimates for homogeneous dispersive equations. It is remarkable that this method allows us to carry out a global microlocal reduction of equations to some low dimensional model cases. The purpose of this paper is to pursue the same treatment for inhomogeneous equations. Especially, time-global smoothing estimates for the operator $a(D_x)$ with lower order terms are the benefit of our new method.

Furthermore, we show that they are interpolation spaces and establish duality and Sobolev embedding theorems in this context.

Weakly hyperbolic equations with non-analytic coefficients and lower order terms

In this paper we consider weakly hyperbolic equations of higher orders in arbitrary dimensions with time-dependent coefficients and lower order terms. We prove the Gevrey well-posedness of the Cauchy problem under $C^k$-regularity of coefficients of the principal part and natural Levi conditions on lower order terms which may be only continuous. In the case of analytic coefficients in the principal part we establish the $C^\infty$ well-posedness. The proofs are based on using the quasi-symmetriser for the corresponding system. The main novelty compared to the existing literature is the possibility to include lower order terms to the equation as well as considering any space dimensions. We also give results on the ultradistributional and distributional well-posedness of the problem, and we look at new effects for equations with discontinuous lower order terms.

A necessary and sufficient condition on scattering for the regularly hyperbolic systems

The present paper is devoted to finding a necessary and sufficient condition on the occurence of scattering for the regularly hyperbolic systems with time-dependent coefficients whose time-derivatives are integrable over the real line. More precisely, it will be shown that the solutions are asymptotically free if the coefficients are stable in the sense of the Riemann integrability as time goes to infinity, while each nontrivial solution is never asymptotically free provided that the coefficients are not R-stable as times goes to infinity. As a by-product, the scattering operator can be constructed. It is expected that the results obtained in the present paper would be brought into the study of the asymptotic behaviour of Kirchhoff systems.

Asymptotic integration and dispersion for hyperbolic equations

The aim of this paper is to establish time decay properties and dispersive estimates for strictly hyperbolic equations with homogeneous symbols and with time-dependent coefficients whose derivatives are integrable. For this purpose, the method of asymptotic integration is developed for such equations and representation formulae for solutions are obtained. These formulae are analysed further to obtain time decay of Lp-Lq norms of propagators for the corresponding Cauchy problems. It turns out that the decay rates can be expressed in terms of certain geometric indices of the limiting equation and we carry out the thorough analysis of this relation. This provides a comprehensive view on asymptotic properties of solutions to time-perturbations of hyperbolic equations with constant coefficients. Moreover, we also obtain the time decay rate of the Lp-Lq estimates for equations of these kinds, so the time well-posedness of the corresponding nonlinear equations with additional semilinearity can be treated by standard Strichartz estimates.

Dispersive and Strichartz estimates for hyperbolic equations with constant coefficients

Dispersive and Strichartz estimates for solutions to general strictly hyperbolic partial differential equations with constant coefficients are considered. The global time decay estimates of $L^p-L^q$ norms of propagators are obtained, and it is shown how the time decay rates depend on the geometry of the problem. The frequency space is separated in several zones each giving a certain decay rate. Geometric conditions on characteristics responsible for the particular decay are identified and investigated. Thus, a comprehensive analysis is carried out for strictly hyperbolic equations of high orders with lower order terms of a general form. Results are applied to establish time decay estimates for the Fokker-Planck equation and for semilinear hyperbolic equations.

Global Lp continuity of Fourier integral operators

In this paper we establish global Lp regularity properties of Fourier integral operators. The orders of decay of the amplitude are determined for operators to be bounded on $L^p(\Rn)$, $1<p<\infty$, as well as to be bounded from Hardy space $H^1(\Rn)$ to $L^1(\Rn)$. The obtained results extend local $L^p$ regularity properties of Fourier integral operators established by Seeger, Sogge and Stein (1991) as well as global $L^2(\Rn)$ results of Asada and Fujiwara (1978) and Ruzhansky and Sugimoto (2006), to the global setting of $L^p(\Rn)$. Global boundedness in weighted Sobolev spaces $W^{σ,p}_s(\Rn)$ is also established. The techniques used in the proofs are the space dependent dyadic decomposition and the global calculi developed by Ruzhansky and Sugimoto (2006) and Coriasco (1999).

Criteria for Bochner's extension problem

A necessary and sufficient condition for the resolution of the weak extension problem is given. This criterion is applied to also give a criterion for the solvability of the classical Bochner's extension problem in the $L^p$-category. The solution of the $L^p$-extension problem by Bochner giving the relation between the order of the operator, the dimension, and index $p$, for which the $L^p$-extension property holds, can be viewed as a subcritical case of the general $L^p$-extension problem. In general, this property fails in some critical and in all supercritical cases. In this paper, the $L^p$-extension problem is investigated for operators of all orders and for all $1\leq p\leq\infty$. Necessary and sufficient conditions on the subset of $L^p$ are given for which the $L^p$-extension property still holds, in the critical and supercritical cases.

Global quantization of pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups, SU(2) and 3-sphere

Global quantization of pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups is introduced relying on the representation theory of the group rather than on expressions in local coordinates. Operators on the 3-dimensional sphere and on group SU(2) are analysed in detail. A new class of globally defined symbols is introduced giving rise to the usual Hormander's classes of operators $Ψ^m(G)$, $Ψ^m(S^3)$ and $Ψ^m(SU(2))$. Quantization of pseudo-differential operators on the torus

Pseudo-differential and Fourier series operators on the n-torus are analyzed by using global representations by Fourier series instead of local representations in coordinate charts. Toroidal symbols are investigated and the correspondence between toroidal and Euclidean symbols of pseudo-differential operators is established. Periodization of operators and hyperbolic partial differential equations is discussed. Fourier series operators, which are analogues of Fourier integral operators on the torus, are introduced, and formulae for their compositions with pseudo-differential operators are derived. It is shown that pseudo-differential and Fourier series operators are bounded on $L^2$ under certain conditions on their phases and amplitudes.
