Strongly convergent unitary representations of limit groups

We prove that all finitely generated fully residually free groups (limit groups) have a sequence of finite dimensional unitary representations that `strongly converge' to the regular representation of the group. The corresponding statement for finitely generated free groups was proved by Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen in 2005. In fact, we can take the unitary representations to arise from representations of the group by permutation matrices, as was proved for free groups by Bordenave and Collins. As for Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen, the existence of such representations implies that for any non-abelian limit group, the Ext-invariant of the reduced $C^{*}$-algebra is not a group (has non-invertible elements) An important special case of our main theorem is in application to the fundamental groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus at least two. In this case, our results can be used as an input to the methods previously developed by the authors of the appendix. The output is a variation of our previous proof of Buser's 1984 conjecture that there exist a sequence of closed hyperbolic surfaces with genera tending to infinity and first eigenvalue of the Laplacian tending to $\frac{1}{4}$. In this variation of the proof, the systoles of the surfaces are bounded away from zero and the surfaces can be taken to be arithmetic.

Core Surfaces

Let $Γ_g$ be the fundamental group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g\geq2$. We introduce a combinatorial structure of "core surfaces", that represent subgroups of $Γ_g$. These structures are (usually) 2-dimensional complexes, made up of vertices, labeled oriented edges, and $4g$-gons. They are compact whenever the corresponding subgroup is finitely generated. The theory of core surfaces that we initiate here is analogous to the influential and fruitful theory of Stallings core graphs for subgroups of free groups.

Random Unitary Representations of Surface Groups I: Asymptotic expansions

In this paper we study random representations of fundamental groups of surfaces into special unitary groups. The random model we use is based on a symplectic form on moduli space due to Atiyah, Bott, and Goldman. Let $Σ_{g}$ denote a topological surface of genus $g\geq2$. We establish the existence of a large $n$ asymptotic expansion, to any fixed order, for the expected value of the trace of any fixed element of $π_{1}(Σ_{g})$ under a random representation of $π_{1}(Σ_{g})$ into $\mathsf{SU}(n)$. Each such expected value involves a contribution from all irreducible representations of $\mathsf{SU}(n)$. The main technical contribution of the paper is effective analytic control of the entire contribution from irreducible representations outside finite sets of carefully chosen rational families of representations.

Explicit spectral gaps for random covers of Riemann surfaces

We introduce a permutation model for random degree $n$ covers $X_{n}$ of a non-elementary convex-cocompact hyperbolic surface $X=Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. Let $δ$ be the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ$. We say that a resonance of $X_{n}$ is new if it is not a resonance of $X$, and similarly define new eigenvalues of the Laplacian. We prove that for any $ε>0$ and $H>0$, with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to\infty$, there are no new resonances $s=σ+it$ of $X_{n}$ with $σ\in[\frac{3}{4}δ+ε,δ]$ and $t\in[-H,H]$. This implies in the case of $δ>\frac{1}{2}$ that there is an explicit interval where there are no new eigenvalues of the Laplacian on $X_{n}$. By combining these results with a deterministic `high frequency' resonance-free strip result, we obtain the corollary that there is an $η=η(X)$ such that with probability $\to1$ as $n\to\infty$, there are no new resonances of $X_{n}$ in the region $\{\,s\,:\,\mathrm{Re}(s)>δ-η\,\}$.

Matrix Group Integrals, Surfaces, and Mapping Class Groups I: $U(n)$

Since the 1970's, physicists and mathematicians who study random matrices in the GUE or GOE models are aware of intriguing connections between integrals of such random matrices and enumeration of graphs on surfaces. We establish a new aspect of this theory: for random matrices sampled from the group $\mathcal{U}\left(n\right)$ of unitary matrices. More concretely, we study measures induced by free words on $\mathcal{U}\left(n\right)$. Let $F_{r}$ be the free group on $r$ generators. To sample a random element from $\mathcal{U}\left(n\right)$ according to the measure induced by $w\in F_{r}$, one substitutes the $r$ letters in $w$ by $r$ independent, Haar-random elements from $\mathcal{U}\left(n\right)$. The main theme of this paper is that every moment of this measure is determined by families of pairs $\left(Σ,f\right)$, where $Σ$ is an orientable surface with boundary, and $f$ is a map from $Σ$ to the bouquet of $r$ circles, which sends the boundary components of $Σ$ to powers of $w$. A crucial role is then played by Euler characteristics of subgroups of the mapping class group of $Σ$. As corollaries, we obtain asymptotic bounds on the moments, we show that the measure on $\mathcal{U}\left(n\right)$ bears information about the number of solutions to the equation $\left[u_{1},v_{1}\right]\cdots\left[u_{g},v_{g}\right]=w$ in the free group, and deduce that one can ``hear'' the stable commutator length of a word through its unitary word measures.

Word Measures on Unitary Groups

We combine concepts from random matrix theory and free probability together with ideas from the theory of commutator length in groups and maps from surfaces, and establish new connections between the two. More particularly, we study measures induced by free words on the unitary groups $U(n)$. Every word $w$ in the free group $F_r$ on $r$ generators determines a word map from $U(n)^r$ to $U(n)$, defined by substitutions. The $w$-measure on $U(n)$ is defined as the pushforward via this word map of the Haar measure on $U(n)^r$. Let $Tr_w(n)$ denote the expected trace of a random unitary matrix sampled from $U(n)$ according to the $w$-measure. It was shown by Voiculescu [Voic 91'] that for $w \ne 1$ this expected trace is $o(n)$ asymptotically in $n$. We relate the numbers $Tr_w(n)$ to the theory of commutator length of words and obtain a much stronger statement: $Tr_w(n)=O(n^{1-2g})$, where $g$ is the commutator length of $w$. Moreover, we analyze the number $\lim_{n\to\infty}n^{2g-1} \cdot Tr_w(n)$ and show it is an integer which, roughly, counts the number of (equivalence classes of) solutions to the equation $[u_1,v_1]...[u_g,v_g]=w$ with $u_i,v_i \in F_r$. Similar results are obtained for finite sets of words and their commutator length, and we deduce that one can 'hear' the stable commutator length of a word by 'listening' to its unitary measures.

Arithmetic, zeros, and nodal domains on the sphere

We obtain lower bounds for the number of nodal domains of Hecke eigenfunctions on the sphere. Assuming the generalized Lindelof hypothesis we prove that the number of nodal domains of any Hecke eigenfunction grows with the eigenvalue of the Laplacian. By a very different method, we show unconditionally that the average number of nodal domains of degree l Hecke eigenfunctions grows significantly faster than the uniform growth obtained under Lindelof.

Expanding maps and continued fractions

We obtain a power saving in the error term for a semigroup congruence lattice point count related to continued fractions. This is done by adapting arguments from recent work of Oh and Winter (2014) that give uniform bounds for certain transfer operators in the congruence aspect. Our arguments also build crucially on work of Naud (2005) and Bourgain, Gamburd and Sarnak (2011). The result we obtain, together with a certain conjecture about the multiplicative combinatorics of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{Z})$ that we highlight in the sequel, can be used to obtain an improvement on the size of the exceptional set in Bourgain and Kontorovich's work (2014) on Zaremba's conjecture.

Quantitative spectral gap for thin groups of hyperbolic isometries

Let $Λ$ be a subgroup of an arithmetic lattice in SO(n+1,1). The quotient $\mathbb{H}^{n+1} / Λ$ has a natural family of congruence covers corresponding to primes in some ring of integers. We establish a super-strong approximation result for Zariski-dense $Λ$ with some additional regularity and thickness properties. Concretely, this asserts a quantitative spectral gap for the Laplacian operators on the congruence covers. This generalizes results of Sarnak and Xue (1991) and Gamburd (2002).
