Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and bilinear pairings in the presence of roots of unity

Let L/KL/K be a quadratic extension of global fields. We study Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for the ℓ\ell-part of the relative class group GL/K:=Cl(L/K)G_{L/K} := \textrm{Cl}(L/K) when KK contains ℓn\ell^nth roots of unity. While the moments of a conjectural distribution in this case had previously been described, no method to calculate the distribution given the moments was known. We resolve this issue by introducing new invariants associated to the class group, ψL/Kψ_{L/K} and ωL/K,ω_{L/K}, and study the distribution of (GL/K,ψL/K,ωL/K)(G_{L/K}, ψ_{L/K}, ω_{L/K}) using a linear random matrix model. Using this linear model, we calculate the distribution (including our new invariants) in the function field case, and then make local adjustments at the primes lying over ℓ\ell and ∞\infty to make a conjecture in the number field case, which agrees with some numerical experiments.

Monopole Floer homology, eigenform multiplicities and the Seifert-Weber dodecahedral space

We show that the Seifert-Weber dodecahedral space SW\mathsf{SW} is an LL-space. The proof builds on our work relating Floer homology and spectral geometry of hyperbolic three-manifolds. A direct application of our previous techniques runs into difficulties arising from the computational complexity of the problem. We overcome this by exploiting the large symmetry group and the arithmetic and tetrahedral group structure of SW\mathsf{SW} to prove that small eigenvalues on coexact 11-forms must have large multiplicity.

Detecting large simple rational Hecke modules for Γ0(N)Γ_0(N) via congruences

We describe a novel method for bounding the dimension dd of the largest simple Hecke submodule of S2(Γ0(N);Q)S_2(Γ_0(N);\mathbb{Q}) from below. Such bounds are of interest because of their relevance to the structure of J0(N)J_0(N), for instance. In contrast with previous results of this kind, our bound does not rely on the equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues. Instead, it is obtained via a Hecke-compatible congruence between the target space and a space of modular forms whose Hecke eigenvalues are easily controlled. For prime levels N≡7mod  8N\equiv 7\mod 8 our method yields an unconditional bound of d≥log⁡2log⁡2(N/8)d\ge\log_2\log_2(N/8), improving the known bound of d≫log⁡log⁡Nd\gg\sqrt{\log\log N} due to Murty--Sinha and Royer. We also discuss conditional bounds, the strongest of which is d≫εN1/2−εd\gg_εN^{1/2-ε} over a large set of primes NN, contingent on Soundararajan's heuristics for the class number problem and Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We also propose a number of Maeda-style conjectures based on our data, and we outline a possible congruence-based approach toward the conjectural Hecke simplicity of Sk(SL2(Z);Q)S_k(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z});\mathbb{Q}).

Geometry of the smallest 1-form Laplacian eigenvalue on hyperbolic manifolds

We relate small 1-form Laplacian eigenvalues to relative cycle complexity on closed hyperbolic manifolds: small eigenvalues correspond to closed geodesics no multiple of which bounds a surface of small genus. We describe potential applications of this equivalence principle toward proving optimal torsion homology growth in families of hyperbolic 3-manifolds Benjamini-Schramm converging to H3.\mathbb{H}^3.

On Bhargava's heuristics for GL2(Fp)\mathbf{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)-number fields and the number of elliptic curves of bounded conductor

We propose a new model for counting GL2(Fp)\mathbf{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)-number fields having the same local properties as the splitting field of the mod pp-Galois representation associated with an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. We explain how this new model and Bhargava's local-to-global heuristics for counting GL2(Fp)\mathbf{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)-number fields both shed light on the problem of estimating the number of elliptic curves over the rational numbers of squarefree conductor N<X.N < X. The new model predicts the existence of significantly more GL2(Fp)\mathbf{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)-number fields with the desired local properties than does the local-to-global model when NN has a large number of distinct prime factors, owing to degeneracies caused by Atkin-Lehner involutions. We describe computational evidence supporting the new model.

The Equivariant Cheeger-Müller Theorem on Locally Symmetric Spaces

In this paper, we provide a concrete interpretation of equivariant Reidemeister torsion and demonstrate that Bismut-Zhang's equivariant Cheeger-Müller theorem simplifies considerably when applied to locally symmetric spaces. In a companion paper, this allows us to extend recent results on torsion cohomology growth and torsion cohomology comparison for arithmetic locally symmetric spaces an equivariant setting.

Twisted limit formula for torsion and cyclic base change

Let GG be the group of complex points of a real semi-simple Lie group whose fundamental rank is equal to 1, e.g. $G= \SL_2 (\C) \times \SL_2 (\C)$ or $\SL_3 (\C)$. Then the fundamental rank of GG is 2,2, and according to the conjecture made in \cite{BV}, lattices in GG should have 'little' --- in the very weak sense of 'subexponential in the co-volume' --- torsion homology. Using base change, we exhibit sequences of lattices where the torsion homology grows exponentially with the \emph{square root} of the volume. This is deduced from a general theorem that compares twisted and untwisted L2L^2-torsions in the general base-change situation. This also makes uses of a precise equivariant 'Cheeger-Müller Theorem' proved by the second author \cite{Lip1}.
