Geometry of the smallest 1-form Laplacian eigenvalue on hyperbolic manifolds

We relate small 1-form Laplacian eigenvalues to relative cycle complexity on closed hyperbolic manifolds: small eigenvalues correspond to closed geodesics no multiple of which bounds a surface of small genus. We describe potential applications of this equivalence principle toward proving optimal torsion homology growth in families of hyperbolic 3-manifolds Benjamini-Schramm converging to $\mathbb{H}^3.$

$C^{\infty}$ Stability, Canonical Maps, and Discrete Dynamics

We study a discrete dynamical system designed to find a 'most holomorphic' connection on a smooth complex vector bundle $E$. We examine the relation between the distance of the chern classes of $E$ from the $(p,p)$ axis of the Hodge diamond and singularity formation. Canonical connections and canonical metrics pulled back from Grassmannians play a major role, and we review their differential geometry. As an exercise in the geometry of canonical connections, we include an expression for the curvature in terms of heat kernels.

Target Spaces from Chiral Gauge Theories

Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions with (0,2) supersymmetry are central in the study of string compactifications. Remarkably little is known about generic (0,2) theories. We consider theories with branches on which multiplets with a net gauge anomaly become massive. The simplest example is a relevant perturbation of the gauge theory that flows to the CP(n) model. To compute the effective action, we derive a useful set of Feynman rules for (0,2) supergraphs. From the effective action, we see that the infra-red geometry reflects the gauge anomaly by the presence of a boundary at finite distance. In generic examples, there are boundaries, fluxes and branes; the resulting spaces are non-Kahler.

Novel Branches of (0,2) Theories

We show that recently proposed linear sigma models with torsion can be obtained from unconventional branches of conventional gauge theories. This observation puts models with log interactions on firm footing. If non-anomalous multiplets are integrated out, the resulting low-energy theory involves log interactions of neutral fields. For these cases, we find a sigma model geometry which is both non-toric and includes brane sources. These are heterotic sigma models with branes. Surprisingly, there are massive models with compact complex non-Kahler target spaces, which include brane/anti-brane sources. The simplest conformal models describe wrapped heterotic NS5-branes. We present examples of both types.

Asymptotic Hodge Theory of Vector Bundles

We introduce several families of filtrations on the space of vector bundles over a smooth projective variety. These filtrations are defined using the large k asymptotics of the kernel of the Dolbeault Dirac operator on a bundle twisted by the kth power of an ample line bundle. The filtrations measure the failure of the bundle to admit a holomorphic structure. We study compatibility under the Chern isomorphism of these filtrations with the Hodge filtration on cohomology.

Supersymmetry and the Yang-Mills Effective Action at Finite N

We study the effective action of quantum mechanical SU(N) Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supersymmetries and N>2. We show that supersymmetry requires that the eight fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the $v^4$ terms be one-loop exact. We also show that the twelve fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the $v^6$ terms are two-loop exact for N=3. For N>3, this no longer seems to be true; we are able to find non-renormalization theorems for only certain twelve fermion structures. We call these structures `generalized F-terms.' We argue that as the rank of the gauge group is increased, there can be more generalized F-terms at higher orders in the derivative expansion.

Supersymmetry and Higher Derivative Terms in the Effective Action of Yang-Mills Theories

Higher derivative terms in the effective action of certain Yang-Mills theories can be severely constrained by supersymmetry. We show that requiring sixteen supersymmetries in quantum mechanical gauge theory determines the $v^6$ term in the effective action. Even the numerical coefficient of the $v^6$ term is fixed in terms of lower derivative terms in the effective action.
