Removable sets and $L^p$-uniqueness on manifolds and metric measure spaces

We study symmetric diffusion operators on metric measure spaces. Our main question is whether or not the restriction of the operator to a suitable core continues to be essentially self-adjoint or $L^p$-unique if a small closed set is removed from the space. The effect depends on how large the removed set is, and we provide characterizations of the critical size in terms of capacities and Hausdorff dimension. As a key tool we prove a truncation result for potentials of nonnegative functions. We apply our results to Laplace operators on Riemannian and sub-Riemannian manifolds and on metric measure spaces satisfying curvature dimension conditions. For non-collapsing Ricci limit spaces with two-sided Ricci curvature bounds we observe that the self-adjoint Laplacian is already fully determined by the classical Laplacian on the regular part.

Self-adjoint Laplacians and symmetric diffusions on hyperbolic attractors

We construct self-adjoint Laplacians and symmetric Markov semigroups on hyperbolic attractors, endowed with Gibbs $u$-measures. If the measure has full support, we can also conclude the existence of an associated symmetric diffusion process. In the special case of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms induced by geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds the Laplacians we consider are self-adjoint extensions of well-known classical leafwise Laplacians. We observe a quasi-invariance property of energy densities in the $u$-conformal case and the existence of nonconstant functions of zero energy.

Non-Lipschitz uniform domain shape optimization in linear acoustics

We introduce new parametrized classes of shape admissible domains in R^n , n $\ge$ 2, and prove that they are compact with respect to the convergence in the sense of characteristic functions, the Hausdorff sense, the sense of compacts and the weak convergence of their boundary volumes. The domains in these classes are bounded ($ε$, $\infty$)-domains with possibly fractal boundaries that can have parts of any non-uniform Hausdorff dimension greater or equal to n -- 1 and less than n. We prove the existence of optimal shapes in such classes for maximum energy dissipation in the framework of linear acous-tics. A by-product of our proof is the result that the class of bounded ($ε$, $\infty$)-domains with fixed $ε$ is stable under Hausdorff convergence. An additional and related result is the Mosco convergence of Robin-type energy functionals on converging domains.

Sobolev regularity of occupation measures and paths, variability and compositions

We prove a result on the fractional Sobolev regularity of composition of paths of low fractional Sobolev regularity with functions of bounded variation. The result relies on the notion of variability, proposed by us in the previous article [43, arXiv:2003.11698]. Here we work under relaxed hypotheses, formulated in terms of Sobolev norms, and we can allow discontinuous paths, which is new. The result applies to typical realizations of certain Gaussian or Lévy processes, and we use it to show the existence of Stieltjes type integrals involving compositions.

Approximation of partial differential equations on compact resistance spaces

We consider linear partial differential equations on resistance spaces that are uniformly elliptic and parabolic in the sense of quadratic forms and involve abstract gradient and divergence terms. Our main interest is to provide graph and metric graph approximations for their unique solutions. For families of equations with different coefficients on a single compact resistance space we prove that solutions have accumulation points with respect to the uniform convergence in space, provided that the coefficients remain bounded. If in a sequence of equations the coefficients converge suitably, the solutions converge uniformly along a subsequence. For the special case of local resistance forms on finitely ramified sets we also consider sequences of resistance spaces approximating the finitely ramified set from within. Under suitable assumptions on the coefficients (extensions of) linearizations of the solutions of equations on the approximating spaces accumulate or even converge uniformly along a subsequence to the solution of the target equation on the finitely ramified set. The results cover discrete and metric graph approximations, and both are discussed.

Credit default prediction and parabolic potential theory

We consider an approach to credit risk in which the information about the time of bankruptcy is modelled using a Brownian bridge that starts at zero and is conditioned to equal zero when the default occurs. This raises the question whether the default can be foreseen by observing the evolution of the bridge process. Unlike in most standard models for credit risk, we allow the distribution of the default time to be singular. Using a well known fact from parabolic potential theory, we provide a sufficient condition for its predictability.

Densely defined non-closable curl on carpet-like metric measure spaces

The paper deals with the possibly degenerate behaviour of the exterior derivative operator defined on $1$-forms on metric measure spaces. The main examples we consider are the non self-similar Sierpinski carpets recently introduced by Mackay, Tyson and Wildrick. Although topologically one-dimensional, they may have positive two-dimensional Lebesgue measure and carry nontrivial $2$-forms. We prove that in this case the curl operator (and therefore also the exterior derivative on $1$-forms) is not closable, and that its adjoint operator has a trivial domain. We also formulate a similar more abstract result. It states that for spaces that are, in a certain way, structurally similar to Sierpinski carpets, the exterior derivative operator taking $1$-forms into $2$-forms cannot be closable if the martingale dimension is larger than one.

Magnetic energies and Feynman-Kac-Itô formulas for symmetric Markov processes

Given a (conservative) symmetric Markov process on a metric space we consider related bilinear forms that generalize the energy form for a particle in an electromagnetic field. We obtain one bilinear form by semigroup approximation and another, closed one, by using a Feynman-Kac-Itô formula. If the given process is Feller, its energy measures have densities and its jump measure has a kernel, then the two forms agree on a core and the second is a closed extension of the first. In this case we provide the explicit form of the associated Hamiltonian.

Sup-norm-closable bilinear forms and Lagrangians

We consider symmetric non-negative definite bilinear forms on algebras of bounded real valued functions and investigate closability with respect to the supremum norm. In particular, any Dirichlet form gives rise to a sup-norm closable bilinear form. Under mild conditions a sup-norm closable bilinear form admits finitely additive energy measures. If, in addition, there exists a (countably additive) energy dominant measure, then a sup-norm closable bilinear form can be turned into a Dirichlet form admitting a carré du champ. Moreover, we can always transfer the bilinear form to an isometrically isomorphic algebra of bounded functions on the Gelfand spectrum, where these measures exist. Our results complement a former closability study of Mokobodzki for the locally compact and separable case.

Elementary pathwise methods for nonlinear parabolic and transport type SPDE with fractal noise

We survey some of our recent results on existence, uniqueness and regularity of function solutions to parabolic and transport type partial differential equations driven by non-differentiable noises. When applied pathwise to random situations, they provide corresponding statements for stochastic partial differential equations driven by fractional noises of sufficiently high regularity order. The approach is based on semigroup theory.

Measures and Dirichlet forms under the Gelfand transform

Using the standard tools of Daniell-Stone integrals, Stone-Čech compactification and Gelfand transform, we discuss how any Dirichlet form defined on a measurable space can be transformed into a regular Dirichlet form on a locally compact space. This implies existence, on the Stone-Čech compactification, of the associated Hunt process. As an application, we show that for any separable resistance form in the sense of Kigami there exists an associated Markov process.
