Grassmannians over rings and subpolygons

We investigate special points on the Grassmannian which correspond to friezes with coefficients in the case of rank two. Using representations of arithmetic matroids we obtain a theorem on subpolygons of specializations of the coordinate ring. As a special case we recover the characterization of subpolygons in classic frieze patterns. Moreover, we observe that specializing clusters of the coordinate ring of the Grassmannian to units yields representations that may be interpreted as arrangements of hyperplanes with notable properties. In particular, we get an interpretation of certain Weyl groups and groupoids as generalized frieze patterns.

A greedy algorithm to compute arrangements of lines in the projective plane

We introduce a greedy algorithm optimizing arrangements of lines with respect to a property. We apply this algorithm to the case of simpliciality: it recovers all known simplicial arrangements of lines in a very short time and also produces a yet unknown simplicial arrangement with 35 lines. We compute a (certainly incomplete) database of combinatorially simplicial complex arrangements of hyperplanes with up to 50 lines. Surprisingly, it contains several examples whose matroids have an infinite space of realizations up to projectivities.

Subpolygons in Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns

Friezes with coefficients are maps assigning numbers to the edges and diagonals of a regular polygon such that all Ptolemy relations for crossing diagonals are satisfied. Among these, the classic Conway-Coxeter friezes are the ones where all values are natural numbers and all edges have value 1. Every subpolygon of a Conway-Coxeter frieze yields a frieze with coefficients over the natural numbers. In this paper we give a complete arithmetic criterion for which friezes with coefficients appear as subpolygons of Conway-Coxeter friezes. This generalizes a result of our earlier paper with Peter Jorgensen from triangles to subpolygons of arbitrary size.

Frieze patterns with coefficients

Frieze patterns, as introduced by Coxeter in the 1970's, are closely related to cluster algebras without coefficients. A suitable generalization of frieze patterns, linked to cluster algebras with coefficients, has only briefly appeared in an unpublished manuscript by Propp. In this paper we study these frieze patterns with coefficients systematically and prove various fundamental results, generalizing classic results for frieze patterns. As a consequence we see how frieze patterns with coefficients can be obtained from classic frieze patterns by cutting out subpolygons from the triangulated polygons associated to classic Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns. We address the question of which frieze patterns with coefficients can be obtained in this way and solve this problem completely for triangles. Finally, we prove a finiteness result for frieze patterns with coefficients by showing that for a given boundary sequence there are only finitely many (non-zero) frieze patterns with coefficients with entries in a discrete subset of the complex numbers.

MAT-free reflection arrangements

We introduce the class of MAT-free hyperplane arrangements which is based on the Multiple Addition Theorem by Abe, Barakat, Cuntz, Hoge, and Terao. We also investigate the closely related class of MAT2-free arrangements based on a recent generalization of the Multiple Addition Theorem by Abe and Terao. We give classifications of the irreducible complex reflection arrangements which are MAT-free respectively MAT2-free. Furthermore, we ask some questions concerning relations to other classes of free arrangements.

Supersolvable simplicial arrangements

Simplicial arrangements are classical objects in discrete geometry. Their classification remains an open problem but there is a list conjectured to be complete at least for rank three. A further important class in the theory of hyperplane arrangements with particularly nice geometric, algebraic, topological, and combinatorial properties are the supersolvable arrangements. In this paper we give a complete classification of supersolvable simplicial arrangements (in all ranks). For each fixed rank, our classification already includes almost all known simplicial arrangements. Surprisingly, for irreducible simplicial arrangements of rank greater than three, our result shows that supersolvability imposes a strong integrality property; such an arrangement is called crystallographic. Furthermore we introduce Coxeter graphs for simplicial arrangements which serve as our main tool of investigation.

A simplicial complex of Nichols algebras

We translate the concept of restriction of an arrangement in terms of Hopf algebras. In consequence, every Nichols algebra gives rise to a simplicial complex decorated by Nichols algebras with restricted root systems. As applications, some of these Nichols algebras provide Weyl groupoids which do not arise for Nichols algebras over finite groups and in fact we realize all root systems of finite Weyl groupoids of rank greater than three. Further, our result explains the root systems of the folded Nichols algebras over nonabelian groups and of generalized Satake diagrams.

Non-recursive freeness and non-rigidity of plane arrangements

In the category of free arrangements, inductively and recursively free arrangements are important. In particular, in the former, Terao's open problem asking whether freeness depends only on combinatorics is true. A long standing problem whether all free arrangements are recursively free or not was settled by the second author and Hoge very recently, by giving a free but non-recursively free plane arrangement consisting of 27 planes. In this paper, we construct free but non-recursively free plane arrangements consisting of 13 and 15 planes, and show that the example with 13 planes is the smallest in the sense of the cardinality of planes. In other words, all free plane arrangements consisting of at most 12 planes are recursively free. To show this, we completely classify all free plane arrangements in terms of inductive freeness and three exceptions when the number of planes is at most 12. Several properties of the 15 plane arrangement are proved by computer programs. Also, these two examples solve negatively a problem posed by Yoshinaga on the moduli spaces, (inductive) freeness and, rigidity of free arrangements.

The freeness of ideal subarrangements of Weyl arrangements

A Weyl arrangement is the arrangement defined by the root system of a finite Weyl group. When a set of positive roots is an ideal in the root poset, we call the corresponding arrangement an ideal subarrangement. Our main theorem asserts that any ideal subarrangement is a free arrangement and that its exponents are given by the dual partition of the height distribution, which was conjectured by Sommers-Tymoczko. In particular, when an ideal subarrangement is equal to the entire Weyl arrangement, our main theorem yields the celebrated formula by Shapiro, Steinberg, Kostant, and Macdonald. Our proof of the main theorem heavily depends on the theory of free arrangements and thus greatly differs from the earlier proofs of the formula.

Combinatorial simpliciality of arrangements of hyperplanes

We introduce a combinatorial characterization of simpliciality for arrangements of hyperplanes. We then give a sharp upper bound for the number of hyperplanes of such an arrangement in the projective plane over a finite field, and present some series of arrangements related to the known arrangements in characteristic zero. We further enumerate simplicial arrangements with given symmetry groups. Finally, we determine all finite complex reflection groups affording combinatorially simplicial arrangements. It turns out that combinatorial simpliciality coincides with inductive freeness for finite complex reflection groups except for the Shephard-Todd group $G_{31}$.

On root posets for noncrystallographic root systems

We discuss properties of root posets for finite crystallographic root systems, and show that these properties uniquely determine root posets for the noncrystallographic dihedral types and type $H_3$, while proving that there does not exist a poset satisfying all of the properties in type $H_4$. We do this by exhaustive computer searches for posets having these properties. We further give a realization of the poset of type $H_3$ as restricted roots of type $D_6$, and conjecture a Hilbert polynomial for the $q,t$-Catalan numbers for type $H_4$.

Simplicial arrangements with up to 27 lines

We compute all isomorphism classes of simplicial arrangements in the real projective plane with up to 27 lines. It turns out that Grünbaums catalogue is complete up to 27 lines except for four new arrangements with 22, 23, 24, 25 lines, respectively. As a byproduct we classify simplicial arrangements of pseudolines with up to 27 lines. In particular, we disprove Grünbaums conjecture about unstretchable arrangements with at most 16 lines, and prove the conjecture that any simplicial arrangement with at most 14 pseudolines is stretchable.

Coxeter and crystallographic arrangements are inductively free

Using the classification of finite Weyl groupoids we prove that crystallographic arrangements, a large subclass of the class of simplicial arrangements which was recently defined, are hereditarily inductively free. In particular, all crystallographic reflection arrangements are hereditarily inductively free, among them the arrangement of type $E_8$. With little extra work we prove that also all Coxeter arrangements are inductively free.

Crystallographic arrangements: Weyl groupoids and simplicial arrangements

We introduce the simple notion of a "crystallographic arrangement" and prove a one-to-one correspondence between these arrangements and the connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots are a finite root system (up to equivalence on both sides). We thus obtain a more accessible definition for this very large subclass of the class of simplicial arrangements for which a complete classification is known.

Finite Weyl groupoids

Using previous results concerning the rank two and rank three cases, all connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots form a finite irreducible root system of arbitrary rank are determined. As a consequence one obtains the list of all crystallographic arrangements, a large subclass of the class of simplicial hyperplane arrangements. Supposing that the rank is at least three, the classification yields Cartan schemes of type $A$ and $B$, an infinite family of series involving the types $C$ and $D$, and $74$ sporadic examples.
