M-theory/type IIA duality and K3 in the Gibbons-Hawking approximation

We review the geometry of K3 surfaces and then describe this geometry from the point of view of an approximate metric of Gibbons-Hawking form. This metric arises from the M-theory lift of the tree-level supergravity description of type IIA string theory on the T^3/Z_2 orientifold, the D6/O6 orientifold T-dual to type I on T^3. At large base, it provides a good approximation to the exact K3 metric everywhere except in regions that can be made arbitrarily small. The metric is hyperkähler, and we give explicit expressions for the hyperkähler forms as well as harmonic representatives of all cohomology classes. Finally, in the Gibbons-Hawking approximation, we compute the metric on the moduli space of metrics in two ways, first by projecting to transverse traceless deformations (using compensators), and then by computing the naive moduli space metric from dimensional reduction. In either case, we find agreement with the exact coset moduli space of K3 metrics. The T^3/Z_2 orientifold provides a simple example of a warped compactification, and in a separate paper, this work will be applied to study warped Kaluza-Klein reduction on T^3/Z_2.

A class of Calabi-Yau threefolds as manifolds of SU(2) structure

A class of abelian fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds X_{m,n} is shown yield SU(2) structure, in addition to the standard SU(3) holonomy. Compactification of type II string theory on a manifold in this class give a 4D effective supergravity theory in which the topology spontaneously breaks N=4 to N=2 supersymmetry. The breaking occurs at a scale hierarchically lower than the compactification scale when the P^1 base is large compared to the T^4 fiber. We analyze the moduli space of SU(2) structure metrics of the N=4 theory and its restriction to the moduli space of Calabi-Yau metrics of the N=2 theory, showing that the latter agrees with the expectation computed from triple intersection numbers in the classical limit. Finally, we analyze the twisted cohomology ring associated with the SU(2) structure of X_{m,n} and show that the breaking of N=4 to N=2 is conveniently summarized in the lifting cohomology classes as one passes to the standard cohomology ring, with massive modes persisting as torsion classes when the coupling is nonminimal. The analysis is facilitated by the existence of explicit first-order metrics obtained by classical supergravity dualities.

T-folds, doubled geometry, and the SU(2) WZW model

The SU(2) WZW model at large level N can be interpreted semiclassically as string theory on S^3 with N units of Neveu-Schwarz H-flux. While globally geometric, the model nevertheless exhibits an interesting doubled geometry possessing features in common with nongeometric string theory compactifications, for example, nonzero Q-flux. Therefore, it can serve as a fertile testing ground through which to improve our understanding of more exotic compactifications, in a context in which we have a firm understanding of the background from standard techniques. Three frameworks have been used to systematize the study of nongeometric backgrounds: the T-fold construction, Hitchin's generalized geometry, and fully doubled geometry. All of these double the standard description in some way, in order to geometrize the combined metric and Neveu Schwarz B-field data. We present the T-fold and fully doubled descriptions of WZW models, first for SU(2) and then for general group. Applying the formalism of Hull and Reid-Edwards, we indeed recover the physical metric and H-flux of the WZW model from the doubled description. As additional checks, we reproduce the abelian T-duality group and known semiclassical spectrum of D-branes.

Abelian Fibrations, String Junctions, and Flux/Geometry Duality

In previous work, it was argued that the type IIB T^6/Z_2 orientifold with a choice of flux preserving N=2 supersymmetry is dual to a class of purely geometric type IIA compactifications on abelian surface (T^4) fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. We provide two explicit constructions of the resulting Calabi-Yau duals. The first is a monodromy based description, analogous to F-theory encoding of Calabi-Yau geometry via 7-branes and string junctions, except for T^4 rather than T^2 fibers. The second is an explicit algebro-geometric construction in which the T^4 fibers arise as the Jacobian tori of a family of genus-2 curves. This improved description of the duality map will be a useful tool to extend our understanding of warped compactifications. We sketch applications to related work to define warped Kaluza-Klein reduction in toroidal orientifolds, and to check the modified rules for D-brane instanton zero mode counting due to the presence of flux and other D-branes. The nontrivial fundamental groups of the Calabi-Yau manifolds constructed also have potential applications to heterotic model building.
