Going beyond ER=EPR in the SYK model

We discuss generalizations of the TFD to a density matrix on the doubled Hilbert space. We suggest that a semiclassical wormhole corresponds to a certain class of such density matrices, and specify how they are constructed. Different semi-classical profiles correspond to different non-overlapping density matrices. We show that this language allows for a finer criteria for when the wormhole is semiclassical, which goes beyond entanglement. Our main tool is the SYK model. We focus on the simplest class of such density matrices, in a scaling limit where the ER bridge is captured by chords going from one space to another, encoding correlations in the microscopic Hamiltonian. The length of the wormhole simply encodes the extent these correlations are eroded when flowing from one side to the other.

Onset of Quantum Chaos in Random Field Theories

We study the quantum Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ in theories with spacetime-independent disorder. We first derive self-consistency equations for the two- and four-point functions for products of $N$ models coupled by disorder at large $N$, generalizing the equations appearing in SYK-like models. We then study families of theories in which the disorder coupling is an exactly marginal deformation, allowing us to follow $λ_L$ from weak to strong coupling. We find interesting behaviors, including a discontinuous transition into chaos, mimicking classical KAM theory.

The onset of quantum chaos in disordered CFTs

We study the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ in quantum field theories with spacetime-independent disorder interactions. Generically $λ_L$ can only be computed at isolated points in parameter space, and little is known about the way in which chaos grows as we deform the theory away from weak coupling. In this paper we describe families of theories in which the disorder coupling is an exactly marginal deformation, allowing us to follow $λ_L$ from weak to strong coupling. We find surprising behaviors in some cases, including a discontinuous transition into chaos. We also derive self-consistency equations for the two- and four-point functions for products of $N$ nontrivial CFTs deformed by disorder at leading order in $1/N$.

Supersymmetric Field Theories on AdS_p x S^q

In this paper we study supersymmetric field theories on an AdS_p x S^q space-time that preserves their full supersymmetry. This is an interesting example of supersymmetry on a non-compact curved space. The supersymmetry algebra on such a space is a (p-1)-dimensional superconformal algebra, and we classify all possible algebras that can arise for p >= 3. In some AdS_3 cases more than one superconformal algebra can arise from the same field theory. We discuss in detail the special case of four dimensional field theories with N=1 and N=2 supersymmetry on AdS_3 x S^1.

Bounds on $\mathcal{N}=1$ Superconformal Theories with Global Symmetries

Recently, the conformal-bootstrap has been successfully used to obtain generic bounds on the spectrum and OPE coefficients of unitary conformal field theories. In practice, these bounds are obtained by assuming the existence of a scalar operator in the theory and analyzing the crossing-symmetry constraints of its 4-point function. In $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal theories with a global symmetry there is always a scalar primary operator, which is the top of the current-multiplet. In this paper we analyze the crossing-symmetry constraints of the 4-point function of this operator for $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories with $SU(N)$ global symmetry. We analyze the current-current OPE, and derive the superconformal blocks, generalizing the work of Fortin, Intrilligator and Stergiou to the non-Abelian case and finding new superconformal blocks which appear in the Abelian case. We then use these results to obtain bounds on the coefficient of the current 2-point function.

Rigid Holography and Six-Dimensional N=(2,0) Theories on AdS_5 times S^1

Field theories on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be studied by realizing them as low-energy limits of AdS vacua of string/M theory. In an appropriate limit, the field theories decouple from the rest of string/M theory. Since these vacua are dual to conformal field theories (CFTs), this relates some of the observables of these field theories on AdS to a subsector of the dual CFTs. We exemplify this `rigid holography' by studying in detail the 6d N=(2,0) A_{K-1} superconformal field theory (SCFT) on AdS_5xS^1, with equal radii for AdS_5 and for S^1. We choose specific boundary conditions preserving sixteen supercharges that arise when this theory is embedded into Type IIB string theory on AdS_5xS^5/Z_K. On R^{4,1}xS^1, this 6d theory has a 5(K-1)-dimensional moduli space, with unbroken 5d SU(K) gauge symmetry at (and only at) the origin. On AdS_5xS^1, the theory has a 2(K-1)-dimensional `moduli space' of supersymmetric configurations. We argue that in this case the SU(K) gauge symmetry is unbroken everywhere in the `moduli space' and that this 5d gauge theory is coupled to a 4d theory on the boundary of AdS_5 whose coupling constants depend on the `moduli'. This involves non-standard boundary conditions for the gauge fields on AdS_5. Near the origin of the `moduli space', the theory on the boundary contains a weakly coupled 4d N=2 supersymmetric SU(K) gauge theory. We show that this implies large corrections to the metric on the `moduli space'. The embedding in string theory implies that the 6d N=(2,0) theory on AdS_5xS^1 with sources on the boundary is a subsector of the large N limit of various 4d N=2 quiver SCFTs that remains non-trivial in the large N limit. The same subsector appears universally in many different 4d N=2 SCFTs. We also discuss a decoupling limit that leads to N=(2,0) `little string theories' on AdS_5xS^1.

Black Holes, Entanglement and Random Matrices

We provide evidence that strong quantum entanglement between Hilbert spaces does not generically create semiclassical wormholes between the corresponding geometric regions in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We propose a description of low-energy gravity probes as random operators on the space of black hole states. We use this description to compute correlators between the entangled systems, and argue that a wormhole can only exist if correlations are large. Conversely, we also argue that large correlations can exist in the manifest absence of a Lorentzian wormhole. Thus the strength of the entanglement cannot generically diagnose spacetime connectedness, without information on the spectral properties of the probing operators. Our random matrix picture of probes also provides suggestive insights into the problem of "seeing behind a horizon".

Chiral 2D "Strange Metals" from N = 4 SYM

Familiar field theories may contain closed subsectors made out of only fermions, which can be used to explore new and unusual phases of matter in lower dimensions. We focus on the fermionic su(1,1) sector in N=4 SYM and on its ground states, which are Fermi surface states/operators. By computing their spectrum to order $(g_{YM}^2 N)^2$, we argue that fluctuations around this fermi surface, within the sector and in the limit $k_F\rightarrow\infty$, are governed by a chiral 1+1 dimensional sector of the "strange metal" coset $SU(N)_N \otimes SU(N)_N/SU(N)_{2N}$. On the gravity side, the conjectured dual configuration is an $S=0$ degeneration of a rotating black hole. On general grounds we expect that the near horizon excitations of $(S=0,Ω=1,J\rightarrow\infty)$ degenerations of black holes will be governed by a chiral sector of a 1+1 CFT.

A strongly coupled zig-zag transition

The zig-zag symmetry transition is a phase transition in 1D quantum wires, in which a Wigner lattice of electrons transitions to two staggered lattices. Previous studies model this transition as a Luttinger liquid coupled to a Majorana fermion. The model exhibits interesting RG flows, involving quenching of velocities in subsectors of the theory. We suggest an extension of the model which replaces the Majorana fermion by a more general CFT; this includes an experimentally realizable case with two Majorana fermions. We analyse the RG flow both in field theory and using AdS/CFT techniques in the large central charge limit of the CFT. The model has a rich phase structure with new qualitative features, already in the two Majorana fermion case. The AdS/CFT calculation involves considering back reaction in space-time to capture subleading effects.

Stability of rapidly-rotating charged black holes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We study the stability of charged rotating black holes in a consistent truncation of Type $IIB$ Supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ that degenerate to extremal black holes with zero entropy. These black holes have scaling properties between charge and angular momentum similar to those of Fermi surface-like operators in a subsector of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. By solving the equation of motion for a massless scalar field in this background, using matched asymptotic expansion followed by a numerical solution scheme, we are able to compute its Quasi-Normal modes, and analyze it's regime of (in)stability. We find that the black hole is unstable when its angular velocity with respect to the horizon exceeds 1 (in units of $1/l_{AdS}$). A study of the relevant thermodynamic Hessian reveals a local thermodynamic instability which occurs at the same region of parameter space. We comment on the endpoints of this instability.

4d N=2 superconformal linear quivers with type IIA duals

We discuss the gravity duals of 4d N=2 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) arising from the low-energy limit of brane configurations of D4-branes stretched between and intersecting NS5-branes and D6-branes. This gives rise to a product of SU(N_i) groups, with bi-fundamental matter between adjacent groups, and extra fundamental hypermultiplets. The most general configuration in 11d (or type IIA) supergravity that is dual to a 4d N=2 SCFT (when the dual of this SCFT is a weakly curved background) was written down by Gaiotto and Maldacena, but finding it explicitly involves solving a complicated Toda equation. This equation simplifies only when the solution can be reduced to type IIA supergravity, so we ask for which SCFTs of this type is there a type IIA dual that is weakly coupled and weakly curved (away from NS5-branes and D6-branes). We find that such solutions (a special case of which was analyzed by Reid-Edwards and Stefanski) exist when there is a large number of gauge groups, with large ranks, and with large 't Hooft couplings for all but a finite number of groups. The general solution of this type is given by solving an axially symmetric Laplace equation in three dimensions, with specific boundary conditions. We match the parameters of the 4d SCFTs, including the exactly marginal coupling constants, with the boundary conditions for the Laplace equation.

Confinement in Anti-de Sitter Space

Four dimensional gauge theories in anti-de Sitter space, including pure Yang-Mills theory, exhibit a quantum phase transition between a deconfined phase and a confined phase as the gauge coupling is varied. We explore various mechanisms by which this may occur, both in a fixed background and in the presence of gravity. We also make a number of observations on the dynamics of four dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories in anti-de Sitter space.

Degenerate Rotating Black Holes, Chiral CFTs and Fermi Surfaces I - Analytic Results for Quasinormal Modes

In this work we discuss charged rotating black holes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ that degenerate to extremal black holes with zero entropy. These black holes have scaling properties between charge and angular momentum similar to those of Fermi surface operators in a subsector of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. We add a massless uncharged scalar to the five dimensional supergravity theory, such that it still forms a consistent truncation of the type IIB ten dimensional supergravity and analyze its quasinormal modes. Separating the equation of motion to a radial and angular part, we proceed to solve the radial equation using the asymptotic matching expansion method applied to a Heun equation with two nearby singularities. We use the continued fraction method for the angular Heun equation and obtain numerical results for the quasinormal modes. In the case of the supersymmetric black hole we present some analytic results for the decay rates of the scalar perturbations. The spectrum of quasinormal modes obtained is similar to that of a chiral 1+1 CFT, which is consistent with the conjectured field-theoretic dual. In addition, some of the modes can be found analytically.

Scaling BPS Solutions and pure-Higgs States

Depending on the value of the coupling, BPS states of type II string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold can be described as multicenter supergravity solutions or as states on the Coulomb or the Higgs branch of a quiver gauge theory. While the Coulomb-branch states can be mapped one-to-one to supergravity states, this is not automatically so for Higgs-branch states. In this paper we explicitly compute the BPS spectrum of the Higgs branch of a three-center quiver with a closed loop, and identify the subset of states that are in one-to-one correspondence with Coulomb/supergravity multicenter states. We also show that there exist additional "pure-Higgs" states, that exist if and only if the charges of the centers can form a scaling solution. Using generating function techniques we compute the large charge degeneracy of the "pure-Higgs" sector and show that it is always exponential. We also construct the map between Higgs- and Coulomb-branch states, discuss its relation to the Higgs-Coulomb map of one of the authors and Verlinde, and argue that the pure Higgs states live in the kernel of this map. Given that these states have no obvious description on the Coulomb branch or in supergravity, we discuss whether they can correspond to a single-center black hole or can be related to more complicated horizonless configurations.

Single and multi-particle scattering in Helical liquid with an impurity

We examine the scattering behavior from a single non magnetic impurity in a helical liquid. A helical liquid is a one dimensional system with a pair of counter propagating edge states, which are time reversal partners. In the absence of a magnetic field, time reversal symmetry is conserved and hence single particle scattering is prohibited. However, multi particle processes are possible. We examine the backscattering current and noise, and derive the effective scattering charge. A magnetic field enhances the backscattered current, but reduces the effective scattering charge. We find that the scattering charge can vary between $e$ and $2e$, depending on the strength of electron-electron interactions and the magnetic field.

Transmission phase shifts of Kondo impurities

We study the coherent properties of transmission through Kondo impurities, by considering an open Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot. We develop a novel many-body scattering theory which enables us to calculate the conductance through the dot, the transmission phase shift, and the normalized visibility, in terms of the single-particle T-matrix. For the single-channel Kondo effect, we find at temperatures much below the Kondo temperature $T_K$ that the transmission phase shift is π/2 without any corrections up to order (T/T_K)^2. The visibility has the form 1-(πT/T_K)^2. For the non-Fermi liquid fixed point of the two channel Kondo, we find that transmission phase shift is π/2 despite the fact that a scattering phase shift is not defined. At zero temperature the visibility is 1/2, thus at zero temperature exactly half of the conductance is carried by single-particle processes. We explain that the spin summation masks the inherent scattering phases of the dot, which can be accessed only via a spin-resolved experiment. In addition, we calculate the effect of magnetic field and channel anisotropy, and generalize to the k-channel Kondo case.

Near-horizon solutions for D3-branes ending on 5-branes

We construct the type IIB supergravity solutions describing D3-branes ending on 5-branes, in the near-horizon limit of the D3-branes. Our solutions are holographically dual to the 4d N=4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on a half-line, at large N and large 't Hooft coupling, with various boundary conditions that preserve half of the supersymmetry. The solutions are limiting cases of the general solutions with the same symmetries constructed in 2007 by D'Hoker, Estes and Gutperle. The classification of our solutions matches exactly with the general classification of boundary conditions for D3-branes ending on 5-branes by Gaiotto and Witten. We use the gravity duals to compute the one-point functions of some chiral operators in the N=4 SYM theory on a half-line at strong coupling, and find that they do not match with the expectation values of the same operators with the same boundary conditions at small 't Hooft coupling. Our solutions may also be interpreted as the gravity duals of 4d N=4 SYM on AdS_4, with various boundary conditions.

Realization of SU(N) Kondo effect in strong magnetic field

In this paper we suggest a realization for the SU(N) Kondo effect, using quantum dots at strong magnetic field. We purpose using edge states of the quantum Hall effect as pseudo spin that interact with multiple quantum dots structures. In the suggested realization one can access each pseudo spin separately and hence may perform a set of experiments that were impossible until now. We focus on the realization of SU(2) and SU(3) Kondo and find a conductivity of 3/4 quantum conductance in the SU(3) case.

Inverted Sparticle Hierarchies from Natural Particle Hierarchies

A possible resolution of the flavor puzzle is that the fermion mass hierarchy can be dynamically generated through the coupling of the first two generation fields to a strongly coupled sector, which is approximately conformally invariant and leads to large anomalous dimensions for the first two generation fields over a large range of energies. We investigate the possibility of using the same sector to also break supersymmetry. We show that this automatically gives an "inverted hierarchy" in which the first two generation squarks and sleptons are much heavier than the other superpartners. Implementing this construction generically requires some fine-tuning in order to satisfy the constraints on flavor-changing neutral currents at the same time as solving the hierarchy problem. We show that this fine-tuning can be reduced to be milder than the percent level by making some technically natural assumptions about the form of the strongly coupled sector and its couplings to the standard model.

Weakly Renormalized Near 1/16 SUSY Fermi Liquid Operators in N = 4 SYM

We discuss a class of Fermi Liquid Operators in N = 4 SYM. We show that these operators are eigenstates of the full quantum dilatation operator. We compute their 1 and 2 loop anomalous dimensions, and show that, similar to Fermi liquids in condensed matter systems, these corrections are suppressed by an arbitrarily small parameter, which is the equivalent of one over the Fermi energy. These operators are, at the classical level, descendants of 1/16 BPS operators, with some scaling properties similar to those of the 1/16 Black Holes in AdS_5.

Anomalies, Dualities, and Topology of D=6 N=1 Superstring Vacua

We consider various aspects of compactifications of the Type I/heterotic $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ theory on K3. One family of such compactifications includes the standard embedding of the spin connection in the gauge group, and is on the same moduli space as the compactification of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory on K3 with instanton numbers (8,16). Another class, which includes an orbifold of the Type I theory recently constructed by Gimon and Polchinski and whose field theory limit involves some topological novelties, is on the moduli space of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory on K3 with instanton numbers (12,12). These connections between $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ and $E_8\times E_8$ models can be demonstrated by T duality, and permit a better understanding of non-perturbative gauge fields in the (12,12) model. In the transformation between $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ and $E_8\times E_8$ models, the strong/weak coupling duality of the (12,12) $E_8\times E_8$ model is mapped to T duality in the Type I theory. The gauge and gravitational anomalies in the Type I theory are canceled by an extension of the Green-Schwarz mechanism.

Branes Intersecting at Angles

We show that configurations of multiple D-branes related by SU(N) rotations will preserve unbroken supersymmetry. This includes cases in which two D-branes are related by a rotation of arbitrarily small angle, and we discuss some of the physics of this. In particular, we discuss a way of obtaining 4D chiral fermions on the intersection of D-branes. We also rephrase the condition for unbroken supersymmety as the condition that a `generalized holonomy group' associated with the brane configuration and manifold is reduced, and relate this condition (in Type IIA string theory) to a condition in eleven dimensions.
