Large Vision-Language Models Get Lost in Attention

Despite the rapid evolution of training paradigms, the decoder backbone of large vision--language models (LVLMs) remains fundamentally rooted in the residual-connection Transformer architecture. Therefore, deciphering the distinct roles of internal modules is critical for understanding model mechanics and guiding architectural optimization. While prior statistical approaches have provided valuable attribution-based insights, they often lack a unified theoretical basis. To bridge this gap, we propose a unified framework grounded in information theory and geometry to quantify the geometric and entropic nature of residual updates. Applying this unified framework reveals a fundamental functional decoupling: Attention acts as a subspace-preserving operator focused on reconfiguration, whereas FFNs serve as subspace-expanding operators driving semantic innovation. Strikingly, further experiments demonstrate that replacing learned attention weights with predefined values (e.g., Gaussian noise) yields comparable or even superior performance across a majority of datasets relative to vanilla models. These results expose severe misallocation and redundancy in current mechanisms, suggesting that state-of-the-art LVLMs effectively ``get lost in attention'' rather than efficiently leveraging visual context.

Memorize Theorems, Not Instances: Probing SFT Generalization through Mathematical Reasoning

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) is widely used for task-specific adaptation, yet recent work shows it systematically undermines reasoning generalization. We argue the root cause is not memorization itself, but its target: vanilla SFT drives models to exploit and memorize spurious surface correlations in problem-solution pairs, leaving them brittle to superficial input variations. To address this, we propose Theorem-SFT, which reorients supervision toward explicit theorem application by teaching models how rules are invoked rather than what answers look like. Theorem-SFT yields consistent gains across benchmarks and model families: +8.8% on MATH (LLaMA3.2-3B-Instruct) and +20.27% on GeoQA (Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct) without modality-specific re-training. Fine-tuning MLP layers alone matches full-layers performance, implicating feed-forward components as the primary locus of reasoning rules. Our findings reframe the debate: Generalization failures stem not from memorization as a mechanism, but from memorizing the wrong inductive targets.

Soloist: Generating Mixed-Initiative Tutorials from Existing Guitar Instructional Videos Through Audio Processing

Learning musical instruments using online instructional videos has become increasingly prevalent. However, pre-recorded videos lack the instantaneous feedback and personal tailoring that human tutors provide. In addition, existing video navigations are not optimized for instrument learning, making the learning experience encumbered. Guided by our formative interviews with guitar players and prior literature, we designed Soloist, a mixed-initiative learning framework that automatically generates customizable curriculums from off-the-shelf guitar video lessons. Soloist takes raw videos as input and leverages deep-learning based audio processing to extract musical information. This back-end processing is used to provide an interactive visualization to support effective video navigation and real-time feedback on the user's performance, creating a guided learning experience. We demonstrate the capabilities and specific use-cases of Soloist within the domain of learning electric guitar solos using instructional YouTube videos. A remote user study, conducted to gather feedback from guitar players, shows encouraging results as the users unanimously preferred learning with Soloist over unconverted instructional videos.
