Charged Dirac perturbations on Reissner-Nordström black holes in a cavity: quasinormal modes with Robin boundary conditions

We investigate charged Dirac quasinormal spectra on Reissner-Nordström black holes in a mirror-like cavity. For this purpose, we first derive charged Dirac equations, and \textit{two} sets of Robin boundary conditions following the vanishing energy flux principle. The Dirac spectra are then computed both analytically and numerically. Our results reveal a symmetry hidden in the Dirac spectra between two boundary conditions. Moreover, when the cavity is placed close to the event horizon $r_+$, we identify that, in the neutral background the Dirac spectra asymptote to $-(3/8+N/2)i$ [$-(1/8+N/2)i$] for the first [second] boundary condition; while in the charged background the real part of charged Dirac spectra asymptote to $qQ/r_+$ for both boundary conditions; where $N$ is the overtone number, $q$ and $Q$ are charges for the field and for the background. In particular, we uncover a striking anomalous decay pattern, $i.e.$ the excited modes decay \textit{slower} than the fundamental mode, when the charge coupling $qQ$ is large. Our results further illustrate the robustness of vanishing energy flux principle, which are applicable not only to anti-de Sitter black holes but also to black holes in a cavity.

Holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions with excited states

We construct a family of solutions of the holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions with the excited states in the AdS soliton background by using both the numerical and analytical methods. The interesting point is that the improved Sturm-Liouville method can not only analytically investigate the properties of the phase transition with the excited states, but also the distributions of the condensed fields in the vicinity of the critical point. We observe that, regardless of the type of the holographic model, the excited state has a higher critical chemical potential than the corresponding ground state, and the difference of the dimensionless critical chemical potential between the consecutive states is around 2.4, which is different from the finding of the metal/superconductor phase transition in the AdS black hole background. Furthermore, near the critical point, we find that the phase transition of the systems is of the second order and a linear relationship exists between the charge density and chemical potential for all the excited states in both s-wave and p-wave insulator/superconductor models.

Holographic p-wave superfluid in the AdS soliton background with $RF^{2}$ corrections

We investigate the holographic p-wave superfluid in the background metric of the AdS soliton with $RF^{2}$ corrections. Two models, namely, the Maxwell complex vector field model and Yang-Mills theory, are studied in the above context by employing the Sturm-Liouville approach as well as the shooting method. When turning on the spatial components of the gauge field, one observes that, in the probe limit, the inclusion of $RF^{2}$ corrections hinders the superfluid phase transition. On the other hand, however, in the absence of the superfluid velocity, it is found that the $RF^2$ corrections lead to distinct effects for the two models. Regardless of either the $RF^2$ correction or the spatial component of the gauge field, the phase transition of the system is observed to be always of the second order. Moreover, a linear relationship between the charge density and chemical potential is largely established near the critical point in both holographic superfluid models.

Charged Dirac perturbations on Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter spacetimes: quasinormal modes with Robin boundary conditions

We study charged Dirac quasinormal modes (QNMs) on Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes with generic Robin boundary conditions, by extending our earlier work of neutral Dirac QNMs on Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. We first derive the equations of motion for charged Dirac fields on a RN-AdS background. To solve these equations we impose a requirement on the Dirac field: that its energy flux should vanish at asymptotic infinity. A set of two Robin boundary conditions compatible with QNMs is consequently found. By employing both analytic and numeric methods, we then obtain the quasinormal spectrum for charged Dirac fields, and analyse the impact of various parameters, in particular of electric charge. An analytic calculation shows explicitly that the charge coupling between the black hole and the Dirac field does not trigger superradiant instabilities. Numeric calculations, on the other hand, show quantiatively that Dirac QNMs may change substantially due to the electric charge. Our results illustrate how vanishing energy flux boundary conditions, as a generic principle, are applicable not only to neutral but also to electrically charged fields.

Quantum and classical aspects of scalar and vector fields around black holes

This thesis presents recent studies on test scalar and vector fields around black holes. It is separated in two parts according to the asymptotic properties of the spacetime under study. In the first part, we investigate scalar and Proca fields on an asymptotically flat background. For the Proca field, we obtain a complete set of equations of motion in higher dimensional spherically symmetric backgrounds. These equations are solved numerically, both to compute Hawking radiation spectra and quasi-bound states. In the former case, we carry out a precise study of the longitudinal degrees of freedom induced by the field mass. This can be used to improve the model in the black hole event generators currently used at the Large Hadron Collider. Regarding quasi-bound states, we find arbitrarily long lived modes for a charged Proca field, as well as for a charged scalar field, in a Reissner-Nordström black hole. The second part of this thesis presents research on superradiant instabilities of scalar and Maxwell fields on an asymptotically anti-de Sitter background. For the scalar case, we introduce a charge coupling between the field and the background, and show that superradiant instabilities do exist for all $\ell$ modes, in higher dimensions. For the Maxwell case, we first propose a general prescription to impose boundary conditions on the Kerr-anti-de Sitter spacetime, and obtain two Robin boundary conditions. Then these two conditions are implemented to study superradiant unstable modes and vector clouds. In particular, we find that the new branch of quasinormal modes may be unstable in a larger parameter space. Furthermore, the existence of vector clouds indicates that one may find a vector hairy black hole solution for the Einstein-Maxwell-anti-de Sitter system at the nonlinear level, which implies that, in such system, the Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole is not a unique solution.

Maxwell perturbations on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes: Generic boundary conditions and a new branch of quasinormal modes

Perturbations of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are often considered by imposing field vanishing boundary conditions (BCs) at the AdS boundary. Such BCs, of Dirichlet-type, imply a vanishing energy flux at the boundary, but the converse is, generically, not true. Regarding AdS as a gravitational box, we consider vanishing energy flux (VEF) BCs as a more fundamental physical requirement and we show that these BCs can lead to a new branch of modes. As a concrete example, we consider Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-AdS black holes in the Teukolsky formalism, but our formulation applies also for other spin fields. Imposing VEF BCs, we find a set of two Robin BCs, even for Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. The Robin BCs on the Teukolsky variables can be used to study quasinormal modes, superradiant instabilities and vector clouds. As a first application, we consider here the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. We find that one of the Robin BCs yields the quasinormal spectrum reported in the literature, while the other one unveils a new branch for the quasinormal spectrum.

Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-anti-de Sitter: quasinormal modes, superradiant instabilities and vector clouds

Scalar and gravitational perturbations on Kerr-anti-de Sitter (Kerr-AdS) black holes have been addressed in the literature and have been shown to exhibit a rich phenomenology. In this paper we complete the analysis of bosonic fields on this background by studying Maxwell perturbations, focusing on superradiant instabilities and vector clouds. For this purpose, we solve the Teukolsky equations numerically, imposing the boundary conditions we have proposed in\cite{Wang:2015goa} for the radial Teukolsky equation. As found therein, two Robin boundary conditions can be imposed for Maxwell fields on Kerr-AdS black holes, one of which produces a new set of quasinormal modes even for Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. Here, we show these different boundary conditions produce two different sets of superradiant modes. Interestingly the "new modes" may be unstable in a larger parameter space. We then study stationary Maxwell clouds, that exist at the threshold of the superradiant instability, with the two Robin boundary conditions. These clouds, obtained at the linear level, indicate the existence of a new family of black hole solutions at the nonlinear level, within the Einstein-Maxwell-AdS system, branching off from the Kerr-Newman-AdS family. As a comparison with the Maxwell clouds, scalar clouds on Kerr-AdS black holes are also studied, and it is shown there are Kerr-AdS black holes that are stable against scalar, but not vector modes, with the same "quantum numbers".

Marginal scalar and Proca clouds around Reissner-Nordström black holes

Massive scalar test fields around Kerr black holes can form quasi-bound states with complex frequencies. Some of these states decay in time, but some others -- in the superradiant regime -- grow, causing a superradiant instability. Precisely at the threshold between decaying and growing modes, there exist bound states with real frequency, known as scalar clouds. Fully non-linear counterparts of these clouds have been shown to yield Kerr black holes with scalar hair. Here, we consider massive, (electrically) charged, test scalar and Proca fields on the background of Reissner-Nordström black holes. By computing the quasi-bound state frequencies, we establish that no such states exist in the superradiant regime for the Proca field -- a similar behavior to that known for scalar fields. But decaying quasi-bound states with an arbitrarily small imaginary part of the frequency exist and thus which are arbitrarily long lived. In the limit of vanishing imaginary part of the frequency, the field does not trivialize and we dub the corresponding configurations as marginal (charged) scalar or Proca clouds, since they are only marginally bound. We comment on the possible existence of non-linear counterparts to these marginal clouds.

Superradiant instabilities in a $D$-dimensional small Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter black hole

We investigate the superradiant instability for a charged scalar field in a $D$-dimensional small Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole. Firstly, we solve the charged Klein-Gordon equation analytically by a matching method. We show that the general $D$-dimensional quasinormal frequencies depend on the relation between the angular momentum quantum number, $\ell$, and $D$. When $\ell$ is a (non-negative) integer multiple of $D-3$, i.e $\ell=p(D-3)$, we find an analytical quasinormal frequency formula adding a purely imaginary correction to the AdS normal frequencies. This is the case for all $\ell$ modes in $D=4$. For general $D$ there are two more cases: i) when $\ell$ obeys $\ell=(p+\frac{1}{2})(D-3)$, which can occur for odd $D$, we observe that the matching method fails, since the near and far region solutions have different functional dependences; ii) for all other cases, the analytical quasinormal frequency formula gives a complex correction to the AdS normal frequencies. Secondly, we perform a numerical calculation which confirms the analytical formulas obtained with the matching method and allows us to explore the case where that method failed. In the latter case, as in the former, we verify that all $\ell$ modes for all $D$ may become superradiant, which contradicts a previous claim in the literature.

Hawking radiation for a Proca field in D dimensions II: charged field in a brane charged black hole

We generalise our first analysis of the wave equation for a massive vector boson in the background of a D-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, by adding charge both to the field and the black hole, on the 3+1 dimensional Standard Model brane. A detailed numerical study is performed to obtain the transmission factor for the coupled (as well as decoupled) system of equations describing the Proca field modes, varying the angular momentum number, mass, charge and space-time dimensions. A qualitatively new feature arising from the introduction of charge is the appearance of superradiant modes, which we investigate. We then compute the Hawking fluxes, and analyse the effect of the charge. In particular we observe an inverted charge splitting effect for small energies and for two or more extra dimensions. For neutral fields, we compare the emission of massive particles with spins up to one and also compare the Proca bulk-to-brane ratio of energy emission, showing that, as for a scalar field, most of the energy is emitted on the brane.

n-DBI gravity, maximal slicing and the Kerr geometry

Recently, in arXiv:1110.0832, we have established that solutions of Einstein's gravity admitting foliations with a certain geometric condition are also solutions of n-DBI gravity, arXiv:1109.1468. Here we observe that, in vacuum, the required geometric condition is fulfilled by the well known maximal slicing, often used in numerical relativity. As a corollary, we establish that the Kerr geometry is a solution of n-DBI gravity in the foliation adapted to Boyer-Lindquist coordinates.

Hawking radiation for a Proca field in D-dimensions

We study the wave equation of a massive vector boson in the background of a D-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. The mass term introduces a coupling between two physical degrees of freedom of the field, and we solve the resulting system of ODEs numerically, without decoupling. We show how to define decoupled transmission factors from an S-matrix and compute them for various modes, masses and space-time dimensions. The mass term lifts the degeneracy between transverse modes, in D=4, and excites the longitudinal modes, in particular the s-wave. Moreover, it increases the contribution of waves with larger angular momentum, which can be dominant at intermediate energies. The transmission factors are then used to obtain the Hawking fluxes in this channel. Our results alert for the importance of modelling the longitudinal modes correctly, instead of treating them as decoupled scalars as in current black hole event generators; thus they can be used to improve such generators for phenomenological studies of TeV gravity scenarios.

First laws of thermodynamics in IR Modified Hǒrava-Lifshitz gravity

We study the first law of thermodynamics in IR modified Hǒrava-Lifshitz spacetime. Based on the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, we obtain the integral formula and the differential formula of the first law of thermodynamics for the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole by treating $ω$ as a new state parameter and redefining a mass that is just equal to $M_{ADM}$ obtained by Myung\cite{YSM2} if we take $α=3π/8$.

Second-order phase transition of Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in deformed Hǒrava-Lifshitz gravity

We study the second-order phase transition (SOPT) for the spherically symmetric Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS) black hole in the deformed Hǒrava-Lifshitz gravity by applying the methods of equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuations. We find that, although the KS black hole has only one mass parameter as the usual Schwarzschild ones, the SOPT will take place if the mass of the KS black hole changes across the critical point $\frac{\sqrt{5+\sqrt{33}}(\sqrt{33}-1)} {16\sqrtω} $. The result show us that there is difference between the Hǒrava-Lifshitz gravity and the Einstein's gravity theory.

Particle energy and Hawking temperature

Some authors have recently found that the tunneling approach gives a different Hawking temperature for a Schwarzschild black hole in a different coordinate system. In this paper, we find that to work out the Hawking temperature in a different coordinate system by the tunneling approach, we must use the correct definition of the energy of the radiating particles. By using a new definition of the particle energy, we obtain the correct Hawking temperature for a Schwarzschild black hole in two dynamic coordinate systems, the Kruskal-Szekers and dynamic Lemaitre coordinate systems.
