Frame set for Gabor systems with Haar window

We show the full structure of the frame set for the Gabor system $\mathcal{G}(g;α,β):=\{e^{-2πi mβ\cdot}g(\cdot-nα):m,n\in\Bbb Z\}$ with the window being the Haar function $g=-χ_{[-1/2,0)}+χ_{[0,1/2)}$. The strategy of this paper is to introduce the piecewise linear transformation $\mathcal{M}$ on the unit circle, and to provide a complete characterization of structures for its (symmetric) maximal invariant sets. This transformation is related to the famous three gap theorem of Steinhaus which may be of independent interest. Furthermore, a classical criterion on Gabor frames is improved, which allows us to establish {a} necessary and sufficient condition for the Gabor system $\mathcal{G}(g;α,β)$ to be a frame, i.e., the symmetric invariant set of the transformation $\mathcal{M}$ is empty. Compared with the previous studies, the present paper provides a self-contained environment to study Gabor frames by a new perspective, which includes that the techniques developed here are new and all the proofs could be understood thoroughly by the readers without reference to the known results in the previous literature.

Tunneling Magnetoresistance in Noncollinear Antiferromagnetic Tunnel Junctions

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics has emerged as a subfield of spintronics driven by the advantages of antiferromagnets producing no stray fields and exhibiting ultrafast magnetization dynamics. The efficient method to detect an AFM order parameter, known as the Néel vector, by electric means is critical to realize concepts of AFM spintronics. Here, we demonstrate that non-collinear AFM metals, such as Mn3Sn, exhibit a momentum dependent spin polarization which can be exploited in AFM tunnel junctions to detect the Néel vector. Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we predict a tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect as high as 300% in AFM tunnel junctions with Mn3Sn electrodes, where the junction resistance depends on the relative orientation of their Néel vectors and exhibits four non-volatile resistance states. We argue that the spin-split band structure and the related TMR effect can also be realized in other non-collinear AFM metals like Mn3Ge, Mn3Ga, Mn3Pt, and Mn3GaN. Our work provides a robust method for detecting the Néel vector in non-collinear antiferromagnets via the TMR effect, which may be useful for their application in AFM spintronic devices.

Gradient and Eigenvalue Estimates on the canonical bundle of Kähler manifolds

We prove certain gradient and eigenvalue estimates, as well as the heat kernel estimates, for the Hodge Laplacian on $(m,0)$ forms, i.e., sections of the canonical bundle of Kähler manifolds, where $m$ is the complex dimension of the manifold. Instead of the usual dependence on curvature tensor, our condition depends only on the Ricci curvature bound. The proof is based on a new Bochner type formula for the gradient of $(m, 0)$ forms, which involves only the Ricci curvature and the gradient of the scalar curvature.

Aronson-Bénilan estimates for the fast diffusion equation under the Ricci flow

We study the fast diffusion equation (FDE) with a linear forcing term under the Ricci flow on complete manifolds with bounded curvature and nonnegative curvature operator. We prove Aronson-Bénilan and Li-Yau-Hamilton type differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions of the FDE. In addition, we use similar method to prove certain Li-Yau-Hamilton estimates for the heat equation and conjugate heat equation which extend those obtained by X. Cao and R. Hamilton, X. Cao, and S. Kuang and Q. Zhang to noncompact setting.

Li-Yau gradient bound for collapsing manifolds under integral curvature condition

Let $(\M^n, g_{ij})$ be a complete Riemammnian manifold. For some constants $p,\ r>0$, define $\displaystyle k(p,r)=\sup_{x\in M}r^2\left(\oint_{B(x,r)}|Ric^-|^p dV\right)^{1/p}$, where $Ric^-$ denotes the negative part of the Ricci curvature tensor. We prove that for any $p>\frac{n}{2}$, when $k(p,1)$ is small enough, certain Li-Yau type gradient bound holds for the positive solutions of the heat equation on geodesic balls $B(O,r)$ in $\M$ with $0<r\leq 1$. Here the assumption that $k(p,1)$ being small allows the situation where the manifolds is collapsing. Recall that in \cite{ZZ}, certain Li-Yau gradient bounds was also obtained by the authors, assuming that $|Ric^-|\in L^p(\M)$ and the manifold is noncollaped. Therefore, to some extent, the results in this paper and in \cite{ZZ} complete the picture of Li-Yau gradient bound for the heat equation on manifolds with $|Ric^-|$ being $L^p$ integrable, modulo sharpness of constants.

New Volume Comparison results and Applications to degeneration of Riemannian metrics

We consider a condition on the Ricci curvature involving vector fields, which is broader than the Bakry-Émery Ricci condition. Under this condition volume comparison, Laplacian comparison, isoperimetric inequality and gradient bounds are proven on the manifold. Specializing to the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature condition, we initiate an approach to work on the original manifold, which yields, under a weaker than usual assumption, the results mentioned above for the {\it original manifold}. These results are different from most well known ones in the literature where the conclusions are made on the weighted manifold instead. Applications on convergence and degeneration of Riemannian metrics under this curvature condition are given. To this effect, in particular for the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature condition, the gradient of the potential function is allowed to have singularity of order close to $1$ while the traditional method of weighted manifolds allows bounded gradient. This approach enables us to extend some of the results in the papers \cite{Co}, \cite{ChCo2}, \cite{zZh}, \cite{TZ} and \cite{WZ}. The condition also covers general Ricci solitons instead of just gradient Ricci solitons.

On rigidity of gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor

In this paper, we prove that complete gradient steady Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor are necessarily Kähler-Ricci flat, i.e., Calabi-Yau, and that complete gradient shrinking (or expanding) Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor must be isometric to a quotient of $N^k\times \mathbb{C}^{n-k}$, where $N$ is a Kähler-Einstein manifold with positive (or negative) scalar curvature.

Resonant activation: a strategy against bacterial persistence

A bacterial colony may develop a small number of cells genetically identical to, but phenotypically different from other normally growing bacteria. These so-called persister cells keep themselves in a dormant state and thus are insensitive to antibiotic treatment, resulting in serious problems of drug resistance. In this paper, we proposed a novel strategy to "kill" persister cells by triggering them to switch, in a fast and synchronized way, into normally growing cells that are susceptible to antibiotics. The strategy is based on resonant activation (RA), a well-studied phenomenon in physics where the internal noise of a system can constructively facilitate fast and synchronized barrier crossings. Through stochastic Gilliespie simulation with a generic toggle switch model, we demonstrated that RA exists in the phenotypic switching of a single bacterium. Further, by coupling single cell level and population level simulations, we showed that with RA, one can greatly reduce the time and total amount of antibiotics needed to sterilize a bacterial population. We suggest that resonant activation is a general phenomenon in phenotypic transition, and can find other applications such as cancer therapy.

A note on compact Kähler-Ricci flow with positive bisectional curvature

We show that for any solution to the Kähler-Ricci flow with positive bisectional curvature on a compact Kähler manifold $M^n$, the bisectional curvature has a uniform positive lower bound. As a consequence, the solution converges exponentially fast to an Kähler-Einstein metric with positive bisectional curvature as t tends to the infinity, provided we assume the Futaki-invariant of $M^n$ is zero. This improves a result of D. Phong, J. Song, J. Sturm and B. Weinkove in which they assumed the stronger condition that Mabuchi K-energy is bounded from below.

MgB2 thick film grown on Stainless steel substrate with ductility

MgB2 thick film was synthesized on the stainless steel substrate by the technique of hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD), using Mg ingot and B2H6 as the raw materials. The film thickness is about 10 microns. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images reveal that it is consisting of highly dense MgB2 crystals with the size ranging from 0.2 to 3 microns. The superconducting transition occurs at 38 K (Tc, onset) and ends at 27 K (Tc, zero), giving the transition width of 11 K. The fabricated film exhibits high ductility and remains attached to the substrate after it was bent to a curvature of about 200 microns.
