Elastic proton-proton scattering at LHC energies in holographic QCD

The cross sections of the high energy proton-proton scattering are studied in a holographic QCD model, focusing on the Regge regime. In our model setup, the involved nonperturbative partonic dynamics is described by the Pomeron exchange, which is realized by applying the Reggeized spin-2 particle propagator together with the proton gravitational form factor obtained from the bottom-up AdS/QCD model. Our model includes three adjustable parameters which are to be fitted by experimental data. We show that both the resulting differential and total cross sections are consistent with data, including the ones recently measured at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV by the TOTEM collaboration at the LHC. Our results imply that the present framework works well in the considered TeV scale, and further applications to other high energy scattering processes, in which the involved strong interaction can be approximated by the Pomeron exchange, are possible.

Magnetism of QCD matter and pion mass from tensor-type spin polarization and anomalous magnetic moment of quarks

We investigate the magnetism of QCD matter and pion mass under magnetic field considering the contribution from the tensor-type spin polarization and the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks. It is found that the tensor-type spin polarization (TSP) induces the magnetic catalysis of chiral condensate and diamagnetism (negative magnetic susceptibility) of quark matter at low temperature, both neutral and charged pion masses increase quickly with magnetic field in the case of TSP. The anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks induces magnetic inhibition and a magnetic dependent AMM causes inverse magnetic catalysis at finite temperature, and the neutral pion mass decreases with magnetic field while the charged pion mass shows nonmonotonic behavior with the magnetic field, which is qualitatively in agreement with lattice result. However, the magnetic susceptibility is positive at low temperature with AMM. In the current framework, our results show the irreconcilable contradiction between the diamagnetism and inverse magnetic catalysis.

Production rate and ellipticity of lepton pairs from a rotating hot and dense QCD medium

Using a current-current correlation function (CF), the photon polarization tensor is calculated for a rotating hot and dense QCD medium. The spectral function (SF) and the dilepton rate (DR) are estimated therefrom. Numerical results show that both SF and DR are enhanced in a rotating medium, especially in a low invariant mass region. SF and DR are also explored in the consequences of the interplay among the angular velocity, temperature and chemical potential. We also estimated the electromagnetic screening by calculating the Debye mass and it shows a suppression for a rotating QCD medium. The most interesting observation is the azimuthal anisotropy of the dilepton production, i.e, the elliptic flow $v_{2}$ of the lepton pair induced by the rotation as an external field. The competition between the centrifugal effect and the spin polarization effect due to rotation results in a convex down behaviour of the elliptic flow as a function of the transverse momentum in a relatively large magnitude of angular velocity. It is noticed that quark spin polarization induces a negative $v_2$ in the case of large angular velocity.

The dynamical holographic QCD method for hadron physics and QCD matter

In this paper we present a short overview on the dynamical holographic QCD method for hadron physics and QCD matter. The 5-dimensional dynamical holographic QCD model is constructed in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework with the dilaton background field $Φ$ and the scalar field $X$ dual to the gluon condensate and the chiral condensate operator thus can represent the gluodynamics (linear confinement) and chiral dynamics (chiral symmetry breaking), respectively. The dilaton background field and the scalar field are a function of the 5th dimension, which plays the role of the energy scale, in this way, the DhQCD model can resemble the renormalization group from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR). By solving the Einstein equation, the metric structure at IR is automatically deformed by the nonperturbative gluon condensation and chiral condensation in the vacuum. We review the results on the hadron spectra including the glueball spectra, the light/heavy meson spectra, as well as on QCD phase transitions, and thermodynamical as well as transport properties in the framework of the dynamical holographic QCD model.

Holographic QCD model for $N_f=4$

We establish a holographic QCD model for four flavors, where a light scalar field $X$ and a heavy scalar field $H$ are introduced, separately. The $H$ field is responsible for the breaking of $SU(N_f=4)$ to $SU(N_f=3)$. The ground state and its Regge excitation of meson spectra in the light flavor sector and heavy flavor sector as well as the ligh-heavy mesons are well in agreement with the Particle data group (PDG). Due to the additional introduction of the $H$ field in the model, different Regge slopes for light and heavy mesons can be achieved.

Magnetic correction to the Anomalous Magnetic Moment of Electron

We investigate the leading order correction of anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) to the electron in weak magnetic field and find that the magnetic correction is negative and magnetic field dependent, indicating a magnetic catalysis effect for the electron gas. In the laboratory to measure the $g-2$, the magnitude of the magnetic field $B$ is several $\mathrm{T}$, correspondingly the magnetic correction to the AMM of electron/muon is around $10^{-34}$/$10^{-42}$, therefore the magnetic correction can be safely neglected in current measurement. However, when the magnitude of the magnetic field strength is comparable with the electron mass, the magnetic correction of electron's AMM will become considerable. This general magnetic correction to charged fermion's AMM can be extended to study QCD matter under strong magnetic field.

Spectra of glueballs and oddballs and the equation of state from holographic QCD

We study the spectra of two-gluon glueballs and three-gluon oddballs and corresponding equation of state in $5$-dimensional deformed holographic QCD models in the graviton-dilaton system, where the metric, the dilaton field and dilaton potential are self-consistently solved from each other through the Einstein field equations and the equation of motion of the dilaton field. We compare the models by inputting the dilaton field, inputting the deformed metric and inputting the dilaton potential, and find that with only 2 parameters, the $5$-dimensional holographic QCD model predictions on glueballs/oddballs spectra in general are in good agreement with lattice results except two oddballs $0^{+-}$ and $2^{+-}$. From the results of glueballs/oddballs spectra at zero temperature and the equation of state at finite temperature, we observe that the model with quadratic dilaton field can simultaneously describe glueballs/oddballs spectra as well as equation of state of pure gluon system. The model with quadratic $A_{E}(z)$ can describe glueballs/oddballs spectra, but its corresponding equation of state behaves more like $N_{f}=2+1$ quark matter. These are consistent with dimension analysis at UV boundary.

Extracting the magnitude of magnetic field at freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions

A strong magnetic field influences significantly the masses of the charged light mesons. For example, the mass of charged pion increases with the magnetic field increasing. We propose this mechanism as a possible way to extract the magnitude of magnetic field at freeze-out in heavy ion collisions and thus help constrain its lifetime which is currently a major open question to resolve. Specifically we show that the ratio between the yield of charged pions and that of charged rhos is very sensitive to the magnetic field value at freeze-out. By using a viscous-hydrodynamic framework (iEBE-VISHNU) to simulate heavy ion collisions and implementing magnetic-field-dependent meson masses, we compute their yields and predict the dependence of such ratio on the magnetic field. We suggest to use this ratio of charged rho yield over charged pion yield as an experimental observable to extract the possible magnetic field at freeze-out in heavy ion collisions.

Extraction of gluon distributions from structure functions at small x in holographic QCD

We investigate the nucleon and pion gluon distribution functions in the framework of holographic QCD, focusing on the small Bjorken x region. Based on an approximate relation, the gluon distributions are extracted from structure functions of the unpolarized deep inelastic scattering which can be calculated with a holographic QCD model, assuming the Pomeron exchange. All the adjustable parameters of the model are determined with the HERA data of the proton structure functions. We explicitly show that the extracted proton gluon distribution is consistent with results of the recent global QCD analysis. The structure functions of the pion can be computed without any additional parameter, which enables us to predict its gluon distribution also. We find that the resulting pion gluon density is smaller than the proton's, and agrees with the recent global QCD analysis result within the uncertainties.

Quarkyonic phase from quenched dynamical holographic QCD model

Chiral and deconfinement phase transitions at finite temperature $T$ and quark number chemical potential $μ$ are simultaneously studied in the quenched dynamical holographic QCD model within the Einstein-Dilaton-Maxwell framework. By calculating the corresponding order parameters, i.e., the chiral condensate and Polyakov loop, it is shown that the transition lines of these two phase transitions are separated in the $T-μ$ plane. The deconfinement phase transition is shown to be always of crossover type and the transition line depends weakly on the baryon number density. Differently, the chiral transition is of crossover at small baryon number density and it turns to be of first order at sufficient large baryon number density. A critical endpoint (CEP), at which the transition becomes second order type, appears in the chiral transition line. This is the first time to realize the CEP of chiral phase transition in the $(T, μ)$ plane using the holographic EMD(Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton) model for two flavour case. It is observed that between these two phase transition lines, there is a region with chiral symmetry restored and color degrees still confined, which could be considered as the quarkyonic phase. Qualitatively, this behavior is in consistent with the result in the Polyakov-loop improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model.

Total hadronic cross sections at high energies in holographic QCD

We present our analysis on high energy hadron-hadron scattering in the framework of the holographic QCD. Combining the Brower-Polchinski-Strassler-Tan Pomeron exchange kernel and gravitational form factors of the involved hadrons which are obtained by using the bottom-up AdS/QCD models in the five-dimensional AdS space, we calculate the total cross sections at high energies. We show that our calculations for the nucleon-nucleon scattering agree with the experimental data including the recent ones taken by the TOTEM collaboration at the LHC. The present framework is applicable to any high energy process, in which the strong interaction can be approximated by the Pomeron exchange. We present the results for the pion-nucleon and pion-pion scattering as examples, which can be obtained without any additional parameter because all the adjustable parameters are fixed via the analysis on the nucleon-nucleon scattering. The resulting total cross section ratios are $σ_{tot}^{πN} / σ_{tot}^{N N} = 0.63$ and $σ_{tot}^{ππ} / σ_{tot}^{N N} = 0.45$, respectively.

Fluid/gravity correspondence: A nonconformal realization in compactified D4 branes

We develop the framework of boundary derivative expansion (BDE) formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence in compactified D4-brane system, which is a nonconformal background used in top-down holographic QCD models. Such models contain the D4-D6 model and the Sakai-Sugimoto (SS) model, with the background of the compactified black D4 branes under the near horizon limit. By using the dimensional reduction technique, we derive a 5D Einstein gravity minimally coupled with 3 scalar fields from the 10D D4-brane background. Following the BDE formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence in the conformal background, we directly derive all the first order transport coefficients for nonconformal gluonic matter. The results of the ratio of the bulk to shear viscosity and the sound speed agree with those obtained from the Green-Kubo method. This agreement guarantees the validity of the BDE formalism of fluid/gravity duality in the nonconformal D-brane background, which can be used to calculate the second order transport coefficients in nonconformal background.

Photon polarization tensor in a magnetized plasma system

We investigate the photon polarization tensor at finite temperature in the presence of a static and homogeneous external magnetic field. In our scheme, the Matsubara frequency summation is performed after Poisson summation, which will be taken easily and convergent quickly in the frame of proper time representation. Moreover, the dependence of Landau levels is expressed explicitly. It demonstrates the convergence of summing Landau levels as it has to be. Consequently, there is no necessary to truncate the Landau level in a numerical estimation. At zero temperature, the Lowest Landau Level (LLL) approximation is analytically satisfied for the imaginary parts of the vacuum photon polarization tensor. Our results examine that, the LLL approximation is not enough for the thermal photon polarization tensor, it gains the contribution not only from the lowest Landau level but also up to the finite-$n$ levels. Such large imaginary ones only show up at finite temperatures, which is the so called Landau damping. It originates from the absorption of soft fields by hard plasma constituents, which is a universal feature of plasma systems. Finally, it was argued that the summation of Matsubara frequency is not commuted with Landau level ones, such conjecture is excluded in our calculations.

Possible formation of high temperature superconductor at early stage of heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the effect of the inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) on the charged $ρ$ meson condensation at finite temperature in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where mesons are calculated to the leading order of $1/N_c$ expansion by summing up infinity quark-loops. IMC for chiral condensate has been considered in three different ways, i.e. fitting Lattice data, using the running coupling constant and introducing the chiral chemical potential, respectively. It is observed that, with no IMC effect included, the critical magnetic field $eB_c$ for charged $ρ$ condensation increases monotonically with the temperature. However, including IMC substantially affects the polarized charged $ρ$ condensation around the critical temperature $T_c$ of chiral phase transition, the critical magnetic field $eB_c$ for charged $ρ$ condensation decreases with the temperature firstly, reaches to a minimum value around $T_c$, then increases with the temperature. Our calculation indicates that the charged $ρ$ condensation can exist in the temperature region of $1-1.5 T_c$ with critical magnetic field $eB_c\sim 0.15-0.3 {\rm GeV}^2$, which suggests that high temperature superconductor might be created through non-central heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. We also show that a growing electric conductivity in early stage of non-central heavy-ion collisions substantially delays the decay of strong magnetic field, which is helpful for the formation of the high temperature superconductor.

Chiral Phase Transition in the Soft-Wall Model of AdS/QCD

We investigate the chiral phase transition in the soft-wall model of AdS/QCD at zero chemical potential for two-flavor and three-flavor cases, respectively. We show that there is no spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the original soft-wall model. After detailed analysis, we find that in order to realize chiral symmetry breaking and restoration, both profiles for the scalar potential and the dilaton field are essential. The scalar potential determines the possible solution structure of the chiral condensate, except the mass term, it takes another quartic term for the two-flavor case, and for the three-flavor case, one has to take into account an extra cubic term due to the t'Hooft determinant interaction. The profile of the dilaton field reflects the gluodynamics, which is negative at a certain ultraviolet scale and approaches positive quadratic behavior at far infrared region. With this set-up, the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and its restoration at finite temperature can be realized perfectly. In the two-flavor case, it gives a second order chiral phase transition in the chiral limit, while the transition turns to be a crossover for any finite quark mass. In the case of three-flavor, the phase transition becomes a first order one in the chiral limit, while above sufficient large quark mass it turns to be a crossover again. This scenario agrees exactly with the current understanding on chiral phase transition from lattice QCD and other effective model studies.

preprint2015arXiv

Realization of chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in holographic QCD

With proper profiles of the scalar potential and the dilaton field, for the first time, the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and its restoration at finite temperature are correctly realized in the holographic QCD framework. In the chiral limit, a nonzero chiral condensate develops in the vacuum and decreases with temperature, and the phase transition is of 2nd order for two-flavor case and of 1st order for three-flavor case. In the case of explicit chiral symmetry breaking, in two-flavor case, the 2nd order phase transition turns to crossover with any nonzero current quark mass, and in three-flavor case, the 1st order phase transition turns to crossover at a finite current quark mass. The correct description of chiral symmetry breaking and restoration makes the holographic QCD models more powerful in dealing with non-perturbative QCD phenomena. This framework can be regarded as a general set up in application of AdS/CFT to describe conventional Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson type phase transitions, e.g. in condensed matter and cosmology systems.

Survival of charged rho condensation at high temperature and density

The charged vector $ρ$ mesons in the presence of external magnetic fields at finite temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$ have been investigated in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We compute the masses of charged $ρ$ mesons numerically as a function of the magnetic field for different values of temperature and chemical potential. The self-energy of the $ρ$ meson contains the quark-loop contribution, i.e. the leading order contribution in $1/N_c$ expansion. The charged $ρ$ meson mass decreases with the magnetic field and drops to zero at a critical magnetic field $eB_c$, which means that the charged vector meson condensation, i.e. the electromagnetic superconductor can be induced above the critical magnetic field. Surprisingly, it is found that the charged $ρ$ condensation can even survive at high temperature and density. At zero temperature, the critical magnetic field just increases slightly with the chemical potential, which indicates that the charged $ρ$ condensation might occur inside compact stars. At zero density, in the temperature range $0.2-0.5~ {\rm GeV}$, the critical magnetic field for charged $ρ$ condensation is in the range of $0.2-0.6~ {\rm GeV}^2$, which indicates that the high temperature electromagnetic superconductor could be created at LHC.

The effect of the chiral chemical potential on the chiral phase transition in the NJL model with different regularization schemes

We study the chiral phase transition in the presence of the chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ using the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. In particular, we analyze the reason why one can obtain two opposite behaviors of the chiral critical temperature as a function of $μ_5$ in the framework of different regularization schemes. We compare the modifications of the chiral condensate and the critical temperature due to $μ_5$ in different regularization schemes, analytically and numerically. Finally, we find that, for the conventional hard-cutoff regularization scheme, the increasing dependence of the critical temperature on the chiral chemical potential is an artifact, which is caused by the fact that it does not include complete contribution from the thermal fluctuations. When the thermal contribution is fully taken into account, the chiral critical temperature should decrease with $μ_5$.

Two-gluon and trigluon glueballs from dynamical holography QCD

We study the scalar, vector and tensor two-gluon and trigluon glueball spectra in the framework of 5-dimension dynamical holographic QCD model, where the metric structure is deformed self-consistently by the dilaton field. For comparison, the glueball spectra are also calculated in the hard-wall and soft-wall holographic QCD models. In order to distinguish glueballs with even and odd parities, we introduce the positive and negative coupling between the dilaton field and glueballs, and for higher spin glueballs, we introduce a deformed 5-dimension mass. With this set-up, there is only one free parameter from the quadratic dilaton profile in the dynamical holographic QCD model, which is fixed by the scalar glueball spectra. It is found that the two-gluon glueball spectra produced in the dynamical holographic QCD model are in good agreement with lattice data. Among six trigluon glueballs, the produced masses for $1^{\pm -}$ and $2^{--}$ are in good agreement with lattice data, and the produced masses for $0^{--}$, $0^{+-}$ and $2^{+-}$ are around 1.5 {\rm GeV} lighter than lattice results. This result might indicate that the three trigluon glueballs of $0^{--}$, $0^{+-}$ and $2^{+-}$ are dominated by three-gluon condensate contribution.

Charged and neutral vector meson under magnetic field

The vector meson $ρ$ in the presence of external magnetic field has been investigated in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where mesons are constructed by infinite sum of quark-loop chains by using random phase approximation. The $ρ$ meson polarization function is calculated to the leading order of $1/N_c$ expansion. It is found that the constituent quark mass increases with magnetic field, the masses of the neutral vector meson $ρ^{0}$ with spin component $s_z=0,\,\pm1$ and the charged vector meson $ρ^{\pm}$ with $s_z=0$ also increases with magnetic field. However, the mass square of the charged vector meson $ρ^{+}$ ($ρ^{-}$) with $s_z=+1$ ($s_z=-1$) decreases linearly with magnetic field and drops to zero at the critical magnetic field $e B_c \simeq 0.2 {\rm GeV}^2$, which indicates the possible condensation of charged vector meson in the vacuum. This critical magnetic field is much lower than the value $eB_c=0.6 {\rm GeV}^2$ predicted by a point-like vector meson. We also show that if we use lowest Landau level approximation, the mass of the charged vector meson $ρ^{\pm}$ for $s_z=\pm1$ cannot drop to zero at high magnetic fields.

Enhancement of jet quenching around phase transition: result from the dynamical holographic model

The phase transition and jet quenching parameter ${\hat q}$ have been investigated in the framework of dynamical holographic QCD model. It is found that both the trace anomaly and the ratio of the jet quenching parameter over cubic temperature ${\hat q}/T^3$ show a peak around the critical temperature $T_c$, and the ratio of jet quenching parameter over entropy density ${\hat q}/s$ sharply rises at $T_c$. This indicates that the jet quenching parameter can characterize the phase transition. The effect of jet quenching parameter enhancement around phase transition on nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and elliptic flow $v_2$ have also been analyzed, and it is found that the temperature dependent jet quenching parameter from dynamical holographic QCD model can considerably improve the description of jet quenching azimuthal anisotropy as compared with the conformal case.

Inverse Magnetic Catalysis in the three-flavor NJL model with axial-vector interaction

In this paper we explore the chiral phase transition in QCD within the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with a negative coupling constant in the isoscalar axial-vector channel, which is associated with a polarized instanton--anti-instanton molecule background. The QCD phase diagram described in this scenario shows a new first order phase transition around the transition temperature $T_c$ toward a phase without chiral condensates, but with nontrivial dynamic chiral chemical potentials for the light quarks, spontaneously giving rise to local $\mathcal {CP}$ violation and local chirality imbalance. The corresponding critical temperature $T_{5c}$ for this phase transition decreases with the magnetic field and it gives a natural explanation to the inverse magnetic catalysis effect for light quarks when incorporating a reasonable value of the coupling constant in the isoscalar axial-vector channel. Furthermore, when the isoscalar axial-vector interaction is dominant in light quark sector and suppressed in strange quark sector, it is found that there is no inverse magnetic catalysis for strange quark condensate, which agrees with lattice results.

Quark magnetar in three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with vector interaction and magnetized gluon potential

We investigate properties of strange quark matter in the framework of SU(3) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model with vector interaction under strong magnetic fields. The effects of vector-isoscalar and vector-isovector interaction on the equation of state of strange quark matter are investigated, and it is found that the equation of state is not sensitive to the vector-isovector interaction, however, a repulsive interaction in the vector-isoscalar channel gives a stiffer equation of state for cold dense quark matter. In the presence of magnetic field, gluons will be magnetized via quark loops, and the contribution from magnetized gluons to the equation of state is also estimated. The sound velocity square is a quantity to measure the hardness or softness of dense quark matter, and in the NJL model without vector interaction at zero magnetic field the sound velocity square is always less than 1/3. It is found that a repulsive vector-isoscalar interaction and a positive pressure contribution from magnetized gluons can enhance the sound velocity square, which can even reach 1. To construct quark magnetars under strong magnetic fields, we consider anisotropic pressures and use a density-dependent magnetic field profile to mimic the magnetic field distribution in a quark star. We also analyze the parameter region for the magnitude of vector-isoscalar interaction and the contribution from magnetized gluons in order to produce 2 solar mass quark magnetars.

Spontaneous generation of local CP violation and inverse magnetic catalysis

In the chiral symmetric phase, the polarized instanton--anti-instanton molecule pairing induces a nontrivial repulsive interaction in the iso-scalar axial-vector channel. As a consequence, one unusual property is observed that in the chiral restoration phase, there is a first order phase transition for the spontaneous generation of local CP violation and chiral imbalance. Furthermore, it is found that external magnetic fields will lower the critical temperature for the local CP-odd phase transition and catalyze the chiral imbalance, which destroys the chiral condensate with pairing quarks between different chiralities. A reasonable strength of the repulsive interaction in the iso-scalar axial-vector channel can naturally explain the inverse magnetic catalysis around the critical temperature under external magnetic fields.

Temperature dependent transport coefficients in a dynamical holographic QCD model

We investigate temperature dependent behavior of various transport coefficients in a dynamical holographical QCD model. We show the nontrivial temperature dependent behavior of the transport coefficients, like bulk viscosity, electric conductivity as well as jet quenching parameter, and it is found that all these quantities reveal information of the phase transition. Furthermore, with introducing higher derivative corrections in 5D gravity, the shear viscosity over entropy density ratio also shows a valley around phase transition, and it is found that the shear viscosity over entropy density ratio times the jet quenching over temperature cubic ratio almost remains as a constant above phase transition, and the value is two times larger than the perturbative result in Phys.Rev.Lett.99.192301(2007).

Zeta Function Regularization of Photon Polarization Tensor for a Magnetized Vacuum

In this paper, we have developed a systematic technique to regularize double summations of Landau levels and analytically evaluated the photon vacuum polarization at an external magnetic field. The final results are described by Lerch transcendent $Φ(z,s,v)$ or its $z$-derivation. We have found that the tensor of vacuum polarization is split into not only longitudinal and transverse parts but also another mixture component. We have obtained a complete expression of the magnetized photon vacuum polarization at any kinematic regime and any strength of magnetic field for the first time. In the weak $B$-fields, after canceling out a logarithmic counter term, all three scalar functions are limited to the usual photon polarization tensor without turning on magnetic field. In the strong $B$-fields, the calculations under Lowest Landau Level approximation are only valid at the region $M^2\gg q_{\shortparallel}^2$, but not correct while $q_{\shortparallel}^2\gg M^2$, where, an imaginary part has been missed. It reminds us, a recalculation of the gap equation under a full consideration of all Landau Levels is necessary in the next future.

Chiral phase transition with mixing between scalar quarkonium and tetraquark

In the framework of two-flavor extended linear sigma model with mixing between scalar quarkonium and tetraquark, we investigate the role of the tetraquark in the chiral phase transition. We explore various scenarios depending on the value of various parameters in our model. The physical mass spectrum of mesons put a tight constraint on the parameter set of our model. We find a sufficiently strong cubic self interaction of the tetraquark field can drive the chiral phase transition to first order even at zero quark chemical potential. Weak or absence of the cubic self interaction term of the tetraquark field make the chiral phase transition crossover at vanishing density.

Dynamical holographic QCD model for glueball and light meson spectra

In this work, we offer a dynamical soft-wall model to describe the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics in one systematical framework. We firstly construct a quenched dynamical holographic QCD (hQCD) model in the graviton-dilaton framework for the pure gluon system, then develop a dynamical hQCD model for the two flavor system in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework by adding light flavors on the gluodynamical background. For two forms of dilaton background field $Φ=μ_G^2z^2$ and $Φ=μ_G^2z^2\tanh(μ_{G^2}^4z^2/μ_G^2)$, the quadratic correction to dilaton background field at infrared encodes important non-perturbative gluodynamics and naturally induces a deformed warp factor of the metric. By self-consistently solving the deformed metric induced by the dilaton background field, we find that the scalar glueball spectra in the quenched dynamical model is in very well agreement with lattice data. For two flavor system in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework, the deformed metric is self-consistently solved by considering both the chiral condensate and nonperturbative gluodynamics in the vacuum, which are responsible for the chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement, respectively. It is found that the mixing between the chiral condensate and gluon condensate is important to produce the correct light flavor meson spectra. The pion form factor and the vector couplings are also investigated in the dynamical hQCD model. Besides, we give the criteria for the existence of linear quark potential from the metric structure, and show a negative quadratic dilaton background field is not favored in the graviton-dilaton framework.

Dynamical holographic QCD model: resembling renormalization group from ultraviolet to infrared

Resembling the renormalization group from ultraviolet to infrared, we construct a dynamical holographic model in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework, where the dilaton background field $Φ$ and scalar field $X$ are responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. At the UV boundary, the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-4 gluon operator, and the scalar field is dual to the dimension-3 quark-antiquark operator. The metric structure at IR is automatically deformed by the nonperturbative gluon condensation and chiral condensation in the vacuum. The produced scalar glueball spectra in the graviton-dilaton framework agree well with lattice data, and the light-flavor meson spectra generated in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework are in well agreement with experimental data. Both the chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement are realized in this dynamical holographic QCD model. The necessary condition for the existence of linear quark potential is discussed, and the pion form factor is also investigated in the dynamical holographic QCD model.

Inverse magnetic catalysis induced by sphalerons

The recently discovered inverse magnetic catalysis around the critical temperature indicates that some important information is missing in our current understanding of conventional chiral dynamics of QCD, which is enhanced by the magnetic field. In this work, we provide a mechanism to explain that the inverse magnetic catalysis around the critical temperature is induced by sphalerons. At high temperatures, sphaleron transitions between distinct classical vacua cause an asymmetry between the number of right- and left-handed quarks due to the axial anomaly of QCD. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, the chiral imbalance is enhanced and destroys the right- and left-handed pairings, which naturally induces a decreasing critical temperature of the chiral phase transition for increasing magnetic field. The inverse magnetic catalysis at finite baryon density, and the critical end point in the presence of a strong magnetic field is also explored in this work.

A dynamical holographic QCD model for chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement

A self-consistent holographic QCD model is proposed which can realize both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement, two most important phenomena of QCD. It is pointed out that the model can accommodate both Regge spectra of hadrons and the linear potential between quarks. The model is formulated in the framework of graviton-dilaton-scalar system, where the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-2 gluon condensate and can lead to the linear confinement, while the scalar field corresponds to the quark anti-quark condensate and can explain the property of chiral dynamics.

Accommodate chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement in a dynamical holographic QCD model

We construct a self-consistent holographic QCD model which can realize two most important phenomena of QCD, i.e. chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. The model is formulated in the framework of graviton-dilaton-scalar system, where the dilaton field is of dimension-2 which might be dual to the dimension-2 gluon condensate and can lead to the linear confinement, while the scalar field corresponds to the quark anti-quark condensate and can explain the property of chiral dynamics. Within this framework, both Regge spectra of hadrons and the linear potential between quarks can be accommodated. It is also found that the negative dilaton background can be safely excluded in this framework.

Low-lying Scalars in an extended Linear $σ$ Model

We formulate an extended linear $σ$ model of a quarkonia nonet and a tetraquark nonet as well as a complex iso-singlet (glueball) by virtue of chiral symmetry $SU_L(3) \times SU_R(3)$ and $U_A(1)$ symmetry. In the linear realization formalism, we study the mass spectra and components of the low-lying scalars and pseudo scalars in this model. The mass matrices for physical staes are obtained and the glueball candidates are examined. We find that the model can accommodate the mass spectra of low-lying states quite well. Our fits indicate that the most glueball like scalar should be 2 GeV or higher while the glueball pseudoscalar is $η(1756)$. We also examine the parameter region where the lightest iso-scalar $f_0(600)$ can be the glueball and quarkonia dominant but find such a parameter region may be confronted with the problem of the unbounded vacuum from below.

Sigma meson and lowest possible glueball candidate in an extended linear $σ$ model

We formulate an extended linear $σ$ model of a quarkonia nonet and a tetraquark nonet as well as a complex iso-singlet (glueball) field to study the low-lying scalar meson. Chiral symmetry and $U_A(1)$ symmetry and their breaking play important role to shape the scalar meson spectrum in our work. Based on our study we will comment on what may be the mass of the lowest possible scalar and pseudoscalar glueball states. We will also discuss on what may be the nature of the sigma or $f_0(600)$ meson.

Dressed Polyakov loop and flavor dependent phase transitions

The chiral condensate and dressed Polyakov loop at finite temperature and density have been investigated in the framework of Nf = 2+1 Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with two degenerate u, d quarks and one strange quark. In the case of explicit chiral symmetry breaking with physical quark masses, it is found that the phase transitions for light u, d quarks and s quark are sequentially happened, and the separation between the transition lines for different flavors becomes wider and wider with the increase of baryon density. For each flavor, the pseudo-critical temperatures for chiral condensate and dressed Polyakov loop differ in a narrow transition range in the lower baryon density region, and the two transitions coincide in the higher baryon density region.

Electric and magnetic screenings of gluons in a model with dimension-2 gluon condensate

Electric and magnetic screenings of the thermal gluons are studied by using the background expansion method in a gluodynamic model with dimension-2 gluon condensate. At low temperature, the electric and magnetic gluons are degenerate. With the increasing of temperature, it is found that the electric and magnetic gluons start to split at certain temperature $T_0$. The electric screening mass changes rapidly with temperature when $T>T_0$, and the Polyakov loop expectation value rises sharply around $T_0$ from zero in the vacuum to a value around 0.8 at high temperature. This suggests that the color electric deconfinement phase transition is driven by electric gluons. It is also observed that the magnetic screening mass keeps almost the same as its vacuum value, which manifests that the magnetic gluons remains confined. Both the screening masses and the Polyakov loop results are qualitatively in agreement with the Lattice calculations.

Thermodynamics of deformed AdS$_5$ model with a positive/negative quadratic correction in graviton-dilaton system

By solving the Einstein equations of the graviton coupling with a real scalar dilaton field, we establish a general framework to self-consistently solve the geometric background with black-hole for any given phenomenological holographic models. In this framwork, we solve the black-hole background, the corresponding dilaon field and the dilaton potential for the deformed AdS$_5$ model with a positive/negative quadratic correction. We systematically investigate the thermodynamical properties of the deformed AdS$_5$ model with a positive and negative quadratic correction, respectively, and compare with lattice QCD on the results of the equation of state, the heavy quark potential, the Polyakov loop and the spatial Wilson loop. We find that the bulk thermodynamical properties are not sensitive to the sign of the quadratic correction, and the results of both deformed holographic QCD models agree well with lattice QCD result for pure SU(3) gauge theory. However, the results from loop operators favor a positive quadratic correction, which agree well with lattice QCD result. Especially, the result from the Polyakov loop excludes the model with a negative quadratic correction in the warp factor of ${\rm AdS}_5$.

Anisotropic Hydrodynamics, Bulk Viscosities and R-Modes of Strange Quark Stars with Strong Magnetic Fields

In strong magnetic fields the transport coefficients of strange quark matter become anisotropic. We determine the general form of the complete set of transport coefficients in the presence of a strong magnetic field. By using a local linear response method, we calculate explicitly the bulk viscosities $\zperp$ and $\zpara$ transverse and parallel to the $B$-field respectively, which arise due to the non-leptonic weak processes $u+s\leftrightarrow u+d$. We find that for magnetic fields $B<10^{17}$ G, the dependence of $\zperp$ and $\zpara$ on the field is weak, and they can be approximated by the bulk viscosity for zero magnetic field. For fields $B>10^{18}$ G, the dependence of both $\zperp$ and $\zpara$ on the field is strong, and they exhibit de Haas-van Alphen-type oscillations. With increasing magnetic field, the amplitude of these oscillations increases, which eventually leads to negative $\zperp$ in some regions of parameter space. We show that the change of sign of $\zperp$ signals a hydrodynamic instability. As an application, we discuss the effects of the new bulk viscosities on the r-mode instability in rotating strange quark stars. We find that the instability region in strange quark stars is affected when the magnetic fields exceeds the value $B= 10^{17}$ G. For fields which are larger by an order of magnitude, the instability region is significantly enlarged, making magnetized strange stars more susceptible to $r$-mode instability than their unmagnetized counterparts.

Chiral condensate and dressed Polyakov loop in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We investigate the chiral condensate and the dressed Polyakov loop or dual chiral condensate at finite temperature and density in two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The dressed Polyakov loop is regarded as an equivalent order parameter of deconfinement phase transition in a confining theory. We find the behavior of dressed Polyakov loop in absence of any confinement mechanism is quite interesting, with only quark degrees of freedom present, it still shows an order parameter like behavior. It is found that in the chiral limit, the critical temperature for chiral phase transition coincides with that of the dressed Polyakov loop in the whole $(T,μ)$ plane. In the case of explicit chiral symmetry breaking, it is found that the transition temperature for chiral restoration $T_c^χ$ is smaller than that of the dressed Polyakov loop $T_c^{\cal D}$ in the low baryon density region where the transition is a crossover. With the increase of current quark mass the difference between the two transition temperatures is found to be increasing. However, the two critical temperatures coincide in the high baryon density region where the phase transition is of first order. We give an explanation on the feature of $T_c^χ=T_c^{\cal D}$ in the case of 1st and 2nd order phase transitions, and $T_c^χ<T_c^{\cal D}$ in the case of crossover, and expect this feature is general and can be extended to full QCD theory. Our result might indicate that in the case of crossover, there exists a small region where chiral symmetry is restored but the color degrees of freedom are still confined.

Heavy quark potential and QCD beta function from a deformed $AdS_5$ model

We show that in a deformed ${\rm AdS}_5$ model with an explicit infrared cutoff included in the logarithmic correction $-c_0\log[(z_{IR}-z)/z_{IR}]$, the heavy quark Cornell potential can be fitted very well, the corresponding beta-function agrees with the QCD beta-function at 2-loop level reasonably well, and its dual dilaton potential is bounded from below in infrared. The results are compared with those in the Andreev-Zakharov model and the Pirner-Galow model.

Logarithmic correction in the deformed ${\rm AdS}_5$ model to produce the heavy quark potential and QCD beta function

We stude the \textit{holographic} QCD model which contains a quadratic term $ -σz^2$ and a logarithmic term $-c_0\log[(z_{IR}-z)/z_{IR}]$ with an explicit infrared cut-off $z_{IR}$ in the deformed ${\rm AdS}_5$ warp factor. We investigate the heavy quark potential for three cases, i.e, with only quadratic correction, with both quadratic and logarithmic corrections and with only logarithmic correction. We solve the dilaton field and dilation potential from the Einstein equation, and investigate the corresponding beta function in the G{ü}rsoy -Kiritsis-Nitti (GKN) framework. Our studies show that in the case with only quadratic correction, a negative $σ$ or the Andreev-Zakharov model is favored to fit the heavy quark potential and to produce the QCD beta-function at 2-loop level, however, the dilaton potential is unbounded in infrared regime. One interesting observing for the case of positive $σ$, or the soft-wall ${\rm AdS}_5$ model is that the corresponding beta-function exists an infrared fixed point. In the case with only logarithmic correction, the heavy quark Cornell potential can be fitted very well, the corresponding beta-function agrees with the QCD beta-function at 2-loop level reasonably well, and the dilaton potential is bounded from below in infrared. At the end, we propose a more compact model which has only logarithmic correction in the deformed warp factor and has less free parameters.

QCD phase diagram at high temperature and density

This article reviews recent progress of QCD phase structure, including color superconductor at high baryon density and strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) at high temperature created through relativistic heavy ion collision. A brief overview is given on the discovery of sQGP at RHIC. The possibility of locating the critical end point (CEP) from the property of bulk viscosity over entropy density is discussed. For the phase structure at high baryon density, the status of the unconventional color superconducting phase with mismatched pairing is reviewed. The chromomagnetic instability, Sarma instability and Higgs instability in the gapless color superconducting phase are clarified.

Shear Viscosity in Weakly Coupled N-Component Scalar Field Theories

The rich phenomena of the shear viscosity (eta) to entropy density (s) ratio, eta/s, in weakly coupled N-component scalar field theories are studied. eta/s can have a "double dip" behavior due to resonances and the phase transition. If an explicit goldstone mass term is added, then eta/s can either decrease monotonically in temperature or, as seen in many other systems, reach a minimum at the phase transition. We also show how to go beyond the original variational approach to make the Boltzmann equation computation of eta systematic.

Phase diagram and thermodynamics of the Polyakov linear sigma model with three quark flavors

The phase diagram at finite temperature and density is investigated in the framework of the Polyakov linear sigma model (PLSM) with three light quark flavors in the mean field approximation. It is found that in the PLSM, the three phase transitions, i.e, the chiral restoration of $u,d$ quarks, the chiral restoration of $s$ quark, and the deconfinement phase transition are independent. There exists two-flavor quarkyonic phase at low density and three-flavor quarkyonic phase at high density. The critical end point (CEP) which separating the crossover from the first-order line in the PLSM model is located at$(T_E, μ_E)=(188 \mathrm{MeV},139.5 \mathrm{MeV})$. In the transition region the thermodynamic properties and bulk viscosity over entropy density ratio $ζ/s$ are also discussed in the PLSM.

Scalar Mesons and glueballs in $Dp-Dq$ hard-wall models

We investigate light scalar mesons and glueballs in the $Dp-Dq$ hard-wall models, including $D3-Dq$, $D4-Dq$, and $D6-Dq$ systems. It is found that only in the $D4-D6$ and $D4-D8$ hard wall models, the predicted masses of the ${\bar q} q$ scalar meson $f_0$, scalar glueball are consistent with their experimental or lattice results. This indicates that $D4-D6$ and $D4-D8$ hard-wall models are favorite candidates of the realistic holographic QCD model.

The pseudoscalar glueball in a chiral Lagrangian model with instanton effect

We study the pseudoscalar glueball candidates in a chiral effective Lagrangian model proposed by 't hooft, motived by taking into account the instanton effects, which can describe not only the chiral symmetry breaking, but also the solution of $U_A(1)$. We study the parameter space allowed by constraints from vacuum conditions and unitary bounds. By considering two scenarios in $0^{++}$ sector, we find that parameter space which can accommodate the $0^{-+}$ sector is sensitive to the conditions in $0^{++}$ sector. From our analysis, it is found that three $η$ states, i.e. $η(1295)$, $η(1405)$, $η(1475)$, can be glueball candidates if we assume that the lightest $0^{++}$ glueball has a mass 1710 MeV. While there is no $0^{-+}$ glueball candidate found in experiments if we assume that the lightest $0^{++}$ glueball has a mass 660 MeV.

Confront Holographic QCD with Regge Trajectories of vectors and axial-vectors

We derive the general 5-dimension metric structure of the $Dp-Dq$ system in type II superstring theory, and demonstrate the physical meaning of the parameters characterizing the 5-dimension metric structure of the \textit{holographic} QCD model by relating them to the parameters describing Regge trajectories. By matching the spectra of vector mesons $ρ_1$ with deformed $Dp-Dq$ soft-wall model, we find that the spectra of vector mesons $ρ_1$ can be described very well in the soft-wall $D3-Dq$ model, i.e, $AdS_5$ soft-wall model. We then investigate how well the $AdS_5$ soft-wall model can describe the Regge trajectory of axial-vector mesons $a_1$. We find that the constant component of the 5-dimension mass square of axial-vector mesons plays an efficient role to realize the chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum, and a small negative $z^4$ correction in the 5-dimension mass square is helpful to realize the chiral symmetry restoration in high excitation states.

Strongly coupled matter near phase transition

In the Hartree approximation of Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) formalism of the real scalar field theory, we show that for the strongly coupled scalar system near phase transition, the shear viscosity over entropy density is small, however, the bulk viscosity over entropy density is large. The large bulk viscosity is related to the highly nonconformal equation of state. It is found that the square of the sound velocity near phase transition is much smaller than the conformal value 1/3, and the trace anomaly at phase transition deviates far away from 0. These results agree well with the lattice results of the complex QCD system near phase transition.

Spontaneous Nambu-Goldstone Currents Generation Driven by Mismatch

We review recent progress of understanding and resolving instabilities driven by mismatch between the Fermi surfaces of the pairing quarks in 2-flavor color superconductor. With the increase of mismatch, the 2SC phase exhibits chromomagnetic instability as well as color neutral baryon current instability. We describe the 2SC phase in the nonlinear realization framework, and show that each instability indicates the spontaneous generation of the corresponding pseudo Nambu-Golstone current. The Nambu-Goldstone currents generation state covers the gluon phase as well as the one-plane wave LOFF state. We further point out that, when charge neutrality condition is required, there exists a narrow unstable LOFF (Us-LOFF) window, where not only off-diagonal gluons but the diagonal 8-th gluon cannot avoid the magnetic instability. In this Us-LOFF window, the diagonal magnetic instability cannot be cured by off-diagonal gluon condensate in the color superconducting phase.

Gapless color superconductivity at zero and at finite temperature

We present a detailed study of the recently proposed gapless color superconductivity in neutral two-flavor quark matter in beta-equilibrium at zero as well as at finite temperature. We clarify the nature of the fermionic quasiparticles, and discuss the physical properties of this gapless phase of quark matter. The appearance of two "secondary" spin-1 condensates in the gapless ground state is pointed out. The gluon screening properties are also discussed. It is found that finite temperature properties of the gapless color superconductor are rather unusual. One of the most striking results is that the ratio of the critical temperature to the gap at zero temperature is not a universal number. Moreover, this ratio could become arbitrarily large at some values of the coupling constant. In addition, the value of the gap parameter is not a monotonic function of temperature, although the phase transition is a second order phase transition. In an extreme case, in fact, a nonzero finite temperature gap can appear even if its zero temperature value is vanishing.

Charge Neutrality Effects on 2-flavor Color Superconductivity

The effect of electric and color neutrality on 2-flavor color superconductivity has been investigated. It has been found that the effect of the charge neutrality on a 2-flavor quark system is very different from that on a 3-flavor system. The BCS diquark pair in 2-flavor color superconducting phase has been largely reduced by the large Fermi momentum of electron, the diquark condensate first increases with the increasing of quark's chemical potential $μ$,then decreases rapidly and finally disappears at about $μ=535MeV$, at which the thermodynamic potential equals to that in the neutral normal 2-flavor quark matter.
