Observation of magnon torques mediated by orbital hybridization at the light metal/antiferromagnetic insulator interface

Magnon torques, which can operate without involving moving electrons, could circumvent the Joule heating issue. In conventional magnon torque systems, the spin source layer with strong spin-orbit coupling is utilized to inject magnons, and the efficiency is limited by the inherent spin Hall conductivity of the spin source layer. In this work, we observe magnon torques in the Cr/NiO/ferromagnet heterostructure with the effective spin Hall conductivity of 2.45x10^5 hbar/(2eΩm), twice that of the best conventional magnon torque system. We demonstrate the magnon-torque-driven switching of a perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer at room temperature, with a switching power consumption density of 0.136 mW/μm^2. We find that the magnon torque originates from the orbital hybridization and interfacial inversion symmetry breaking at the Cr/NiO interface. Our findings not only significantly enhance the efficiency of magnon torques, but also provide key insights into the fundamental mechanisms of magnon injections.

Theory of the Magnon Parametron

The 'magnon parametron' is a ferromagnetic particle that is parametrically excited by microwaves in a cavity. Above a certain threshold of the microwave power, a bistable steady state emerges that forms an effective Ising spin. We calculate the dynamics of the magnon parametron as a function of microwave power, applied magnetic field and temperature for the interacting magnon system, taking into account thermal and quantum fluctuations. We predict three dynamical phases, viz. a stable Ising spin, telegraph noise of thermally activated switching, and an intermediate regime that at lower temperatures is quantum correlated with significant distillible magnon entanglement. These three regimes of operation are attractive for alternative computing schemes.

Cryogenic spin Seebeck effect

We present a theory of the non-linearities of the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in a ferromagnetic nanowire at cryogenic temperatures. We adopt a microscopic quantum noise model based on a collection of two-level systems. At certain positions of Pt detectors to the wire, the transverse SSE changes sign as a function of temperature and/or temperature gradient. On the other hand, the longitudinal SSE does not show significant non-linearities even far outside the regime of validity of linear response theory.

Resources of nonlinear cavity magnonics for quantum information

We theoretically explore nonlinearities of ferromagnets in microwave cavities in the classical and quantum regimes, and assess the resources for quantum information, i.e. fluctuation squeezing and bipartite entanglement. The (semi-)classical analysis of the anharmonic oscillator (Duffing) model for the Kittel mode when including all other magnon modes, reveals chaotic and limit-cycle phases that do not survive in quantum calculations. However, magnons with nonzero wavenumbers that are driven by the Suhl instability of the Kittel mode, form a genuine limit cycle. We subsequently compute bounds for the distillable entanglement, as well as entanglement of formation for the bipartite configurations of the mixed magnon modes. The distillable entanglement of bipartite states accessible from a covariance matrix vanishes, but can be recovered by injection locking. The predicted magnon entanglement can be experimentally tested with yttrium iron garnet samples under realistic conditions.

Cloaking the magnons

We propose two approaches to cloak the spin waves (magnons) by investigating magnetization dynamics. One approach is based on a spatially inhomogeneous anisotropic magnetic moment tensor. The other mechanism is using a spatially inhomogeneous anisotropic gyromagnetic factor tensor and an inhomogeneous external magnetic field. For both approaches, the damping tensor is also inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The magnetic characteristic functions of the magnetic materials have been theoretically derived for both mechanisms. A non-magnetic core, which prevents magnons from entering and consequently distorts the spin wave propagation, can be cloaked by a structured magnetic shell to redirect the spin wave around the core using the above design mechanisms. We discuss the feasibility of the proposed mechanisms in an ensemble of quantum dot molecules and magnetic semiconductors. The proposed approaches shed light on transformation magnonics, and can be utilized for future spin-wave lenses, concentrators, low back-scattering waveguides, and ultimately quantum computing.

High performance THz emitters based on ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic heterostructures

We report a THz emitter with excellent performances based on nonmagnetic (NM) and ferromagnetic (FM) heterostructures. The spin currents are first excited by the femtosecond laser beam in the NM/FM bilayer, and then transient charge currents are generated by inverse spin Hall effect, leading to THz emission out of the structure. The broadband THz waves emitted from our film stacks have a peak intensity exceeding 500 um thick ZnTe crystals (standard THz emitters). Our device is insensitive to the polarization of an incident laser beam which indicates the noise resistive feature. In contrast, the polarization of THz waves is fully controllable by an external magnetic field. We have also fabricated the devices on flexible substrates with a great performance, and demonstrated that the devices can be driven by low power lasers. Together with the low cost and mass productive sputtering growth method for the film stacks, the proposed THz emitters can be readily applied to a wide range of THz equipment. Our study also points towards an alternative approach to characterize spintronic devices with NM/FM bilayers.

Optically induced spin-dependent diffusive transport in the presence of spin-orbit interaction for all-optical magnetization reversal

We have considered the effect of different spin-orbit interaction mechanisms on the process of demagnetization under the influence of short-pulse lasers. All-optical magnetization reversal of perpendicularly magnetized thin films can occur if there are sufficient strong spin-Hall, skew scattering, and Rashba interactions. In the presence of spin-orbit interactions, the transient charge currents provide the generation of transverse-spin currents and accumulations, which eventually exert spin-transfer torque on the magnetization. By combining the optically excited spin-dependent diffusive transport with the spin and charge currents due to skew scattering, spin-Hall, inverse spin-Hall and Rashba interactions, into a numerical model, we demonstrate a possibility of ultra-fast all-optical magnetization reversal. This understanding provokes intriguing, more in-depth experimental studies on the role of spin-orbit interaction mechanisms in optimizing structures for all-optical magnetization reversal.

Magnetization reversal using excitation of collective modes in nanodot matrices

The large arrays of magnetic dots are the building blocks of magnonic crystals and the emerging bit patterned media for future recording technology. In order to fully utilize the functionalities of high density magnetic nanodots, a method for the selective reversal of a single nanodot in a matrix of dots is desired. We have proposed a method for magnetization reversal of a single nanodot with microwave excitation in a matrix of magneto-statically interacting dots. The method is based on the excitation of collective modes and the spatial anomaly in the microwave power absorption. We perform numerical simulations to demonstrate the possibility of switching a single dot from any initial state of a 3 by 3 matrix of dots, and develop a theoretical model for the phenomena. We discuss the applicability of the proposed method for introducing defect modes in magnonic crystals as well as for future magnetic recording.

Synchronization of spin-transfer torque oscillators by spin pumping, inverse spin Hall, and spin Hall effects

We have proposed a method to synchronize multiple spin-transfer torque oscillators based on spin pumping, inverse spin Hall, and spin Hall effects. The proposed oscillator system consists of a series of nano-magnets in junction with a normal metal with high spin-orbit coupling, and an accumulative feedback loop. We conduct simulations to demonstrate the effect of modulated charge currents in the normal metal due to spin pumping from each nano-magnet. We show that the interplay between the spin Hall effect and inverse spin Hall effect results in synchronization of the nano-magnets.

Electrical detection of microwave assisted magnetization reversal by spin pumping

Microwave assisted magnetization reversal has been investigated in a bilayer system of Pt/ferromagnet by detecting a change in the polarity of the spin pumping signal. The reversal process is studied in two material systems, Pt/CoFeB and Pt/NiFe, for different aspect ratios. The onset of the switching behavior is indicated by a sharp transition in the spin pumping voltage. At a threshold value of the external field, the switching process changes from partial to full reversal with increasing microwave power. The proposed method provides a simple way to detect microwave assisted magnetization reversal.
