A Novel Criterion for Unpredictable Motions

We demonstrate the extension of unpredictable motions in coupled autonomous systems with skew product structure in the case that generalized synchronization takes place. Sufficient conditions for the existence of unpredictable motions in the dynamics of the response system are provided. The theoretical results are exemplified for coupled autonomous systems in which the drive is a hybrid dynamical system and the response is a Lorenz system. The auxiliary system approach and conditional Lyapunov exponents are utilized to detect the presence of generalized synchronization.

Generation of Synchronous Unpredictable Oscillations by Coupled Hopfield Neural Networks

A new criterion based on generalized synchronization is provided for the extension of unpredictable oscillations among coupled Hopfield neural networks (HNNs). It is shown that if a drive HNN possesses an unpredictable oscillation, then a response HNN also possesses such an oscillation provided that they are synchronized in the generalized sense. Extension of unpredictability in coupled 4D HNNs are exemplified with simulations. The auxiliary system approach and conditional Lyapunov exponents are utilized to demonstrate the presence of synchronization.

Multiple Chaotic Attractors in Coupled Lorenz Systems

Unidirectionally coupled Lorenz systems in which the drive possesses a chaotic attractor and the response admits two stable equilibria in the absence of the driving is under investigation. It is found that double chaotic attractors coexist in the dynamics. The approach is applicable for chains of coupled Lorenz systems. The existence of four chaotic attractors in three coupled Lorenz systems is also demonstrated.

Existence of Unpredictable Solutions and Chaos

In paper [1] unpredictable points were introduced based on Poisson stability, and this gives rise to the existence of chaos in the quasi-minimal set. This time, an unpredictable function is determined as an unpredictable point in the Bebutov dynamical system. The existence of an unpredictable solution and consequently chaos of a quasi-linear system of ordinary differential equations are verified. This is the first time that the description of chaos is initiated from a single function, but not on a collection of them. The results can be easily extended to different types of differential equations. An application of the main theorem for Duffing equations is provided.

Homoclinic and Heteroclinic Motions in Hybrid Systems with Impacts

In this paper, we present a method to generate homoclinic and heteroclinic motions in impulsive systems. We rigorously prove the presence of such motions in the case that the systems are under the influence of a discrete map that possesses homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. Simulations that support the theoretical results are represented by means of a Duffing equation with impacts.

Homoclinical structure of SICNNs with rectangular input currents

Shunting inhibitory cellular neural networks (SICNNs) with continuous as well as discontinuous external inputs are investigated. The descriptions of homoclinic and heteroclinic motions are provided in the functional sense for the multidimensional dynamics of SICNNs, and it is demonstrated that the networks under investigation exhibit such motions. Homoclinic and heteroclinic outputs that are asymptotic to quasi-periodic outputs are illustrated.

Persistence of Chaos in Coupled Lorenz Systems

The dynamics of unidirectionally coupled chaotic Lorenz systems is investigated. It is revealed that chaos is present in the response system regardless of generalized synchronization. The presence of sensitivity is theoretically proved, and the auxiliary system approach and conditional Lyapunov exponents are utilized to demonstrate the absence of synchronization. Periodic motions embedded in the chaotic attractor of the response system is demonstrated by taking advantage of a period-doubling cascade of the drive. The obtained results may shed light on the global unpredictability of the weather dynamics and can be useful for investigations concerning coupled Lorenz lasers.

Poincaré chaos and unpredictable functions

The results of this study are continuation of the research of Poincaré chaos initiated in papers (Akhmet M, Fen MO. Commun Nonlinear Sci Numer Simulat 2016;40:1-5; Akhmet M, Fen MO. Turk J Math, doi:10.3906/mat-1603-51, accepted). We focus on the construction of an unpredictable function, continuous on the real axis. As auxiliary results, unpredictable orbits for the symbolic dynamics and the logistic map are obtained. By shaping the unpredictable function as well as Poisson function we have performed the first step in the development of the theory of unpredictable solutions for differential and discrete equations. The results are preliminary ones for deep analysis of chaos existence in differential and hybrid systems. Illustrative examples concerning unpredictable solutions of differential equations are provided.

Unpredictable solutions of differential equations

We apply the topology of convergence on compact sets to define unpredictable functions [5, 6]. The topology is metrizable and easy for applications with integral operators. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, the existence and uniqueness of the unpredictable solution for a delay differential equation is proved. As a corollary of the theorem, a similar assertion for a quasilinear ordinary differential equation is formulated. Examples with simulations illustrate the obtained results.

Exogenous Versus Endogenous for Chaotic Business Cycles

We propose a novel approach to generate chaotic business cycles in a deterministic setting. Rather than producing chaos endogenously, we consider aggregate economic models with limit cycles and equilibriums, subject them to chaotic exogenous shocks and obtain chaotic cyclical motions. Thus, we emphasize that chaotic cycles, which are inevitable in economics, are not only interior properties of economic models, but also can be considered as a result of interaction of several economical systems. This provides a comprehension of chaos (unpredictability, lack of forecasting) and control of chaos as a global economic phenomenon from the deterministic point of view. We suppose that the results of our paper are contribution to the mixed exogenous-endogenous theories of business cycles in classification by P.A. Samuelson [76]. Moreover, they demonstrate that the irregularity of the extended chaos can be structured, and this distinguishes them from the generalized synchronization. The advantage of the knowledge of the structure is that by applying instruments, which already have been developed for deterministic chaos one can control the chaos, emphasizing a parameter or a type of motion. For the globalization of cyclic chaos phenomenon we utilize new mechanisms such that entrainment by chaos, attraction of chaotic cycles by equilibriums and bifurcation of chaotic cycles developed in our earlier papers.

Extension of Lorenz Unpredictability

It is found that Lorenz systems can be unidirectionally coupled such that the chaos expands from the drive system. This is true if the response system is not chaotic, but admits a global attractor, an equilibrium or a cycle. The extension of sensitivity and period-doubling cascade are theoretically proved, and the appearance of cyclic chaos as well as intermittency in interconnected Lorenz systems are demonstrated. A possible connection of our results with the global weather unpredictability is provided.

Li-Yorke chaos in hybrid systems on a time scale

By using the reduction technique to impulsive differential equations [1], we rigorously prove the presence of chaos in dynamic equations on time scales (DETS). The results of the present study are based on the Li-Yorke definition of chaos. This is the first time in the literature that chaos is obtained for DETS. An illustrative example is presented by means of a Duffing equation on a time scale.

SICNNs with Li-Yorke Chaotic Outputs on a Time Scale

In the present study, we investigate the existence of Li-Yorke chaos in the dynamics of shunting inhibitory cellular neural networks (SICNNs) on time scales. It is rigorously proved by taking advantage of external inputs that the outputs of SICNNs exhibit Li-Yorke chaos. The theoretical results are supported by simulations, and the controllability of chaos on the time scale is demonstrated by means of the Pyragas control technique. This is the first time in the literature that the existence as well as the control of chaos are provided for neural networks on time scales.

Entrainment by Spatiotemporal Chaos in Glow Discharge-Semiconductor Systems

Entrainment of limit cycles by chaos [1] is discovered numerically through specially designed unidirectional coupling of two glow discharge-semiconductor systems. By utilizing the auxiliary system approach [2], it is verified that the phenomenon is not a chaos synchronization. Simulations demonstrate various aspects of the chaos appearance in both drive and response systems. Chaotic control is through the external circuit equation and governs the electrical potential on the boundary. The expandability of the theory to collectives of glow discharge systems is discussed, and this increases the potential of applications of the results. Moreover, the research completes the previous discussion of the chaos appearance in a glow discharge-semiconductor system [3].

Entrainment of Chaos

A new phenomenon, entrainment of chaos, which is understood as a seizure of an irregular behavior by limit cycles, is discussed. As a result, chaotic cycles appear if the chaos amplitude is small. Otherwise, the chaos is not necessarily cyclic, if the perturbations are strong and/or diameter of the limit cycle is small. Sensitivity as a main and a unique ingredient is considered and, in addition, period-doubling route to chaos is chosen for extension. The results may be of strong importance for engineering sciences, brainwaves and biomusicology phenomena as well as can be developed for hydrodynamics. Theoretical results are supported by simulations and discussions over Chua's oscillators, entrainment of chaos by toroidal attractors and controlling problems. Moreover, through an example, by means of the Lyapunov functions method, a chaotic attractor is provided.

Morphogenesis of Chaos

Morphogenesis, as it is understood in a wide sense by René Thom, is considered for various types of chaos. That is, those, obtained by period-doubling cascade, Devaney's and Li-Yorke chaos. Moreover, in discussion form we consider inheritance of intermittency, the double-scroll Chua's attractor and quasiperiodical motions as a possible skeleton of a chaotic attractor. To make our introduction of the paper more clear, we have to say that one may consider other various accompanying concepts of chaos such that a structure of the chaotic attractor, its fractal dimension, form of the bifurcation diagram, the spectra of Lyapunov exponents, etc. We make comparison of the main concept of our paper with Turing's morphogenesis and John von Neumann automata, considering that this may be not only formal one, but will give ideas for the chaos development in the morphogenesis of Turing and for self-replicating machines. To provide rigorous study of the subject, we introduce new definitions such as chaotic sets of functions, the generator and replicator of chaos, and precise description of ingredients for Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos in continuous dynamics. Appropriate simulations which illustrate the morphogenesis phenomenon are provided.
