Fluctuations of Level Curves for Time-Dependent Spherical Random Fields

The investigation of the behaviour for geometric functionals of random fields on manifolds has drawn recently considerable attention. In this paper, we extend this framework by considering fluctuations over time for the level curves of general isotropic Gaussian spherical random fields. We focus on both long and short memory assumptions; in the former case, we show that the fluctuations of $u$-level curves are dominated by a single component, corresponding to a second-order chaos evaluated on a subset of the multipole components for the random field. We prove the existence of cancellation points where the variance is asymptotically of smaller order; these points do not include the nodal case $u = 0$, in marked contrast with recent results on the high-frequency behaviour of nodal lines for random eigenfunctions with no temporal dependence. In the short memory case, we show that all chaoses contribute in the limit, no cancellation occurs and a Central Limit Theorem can be established by Fourth-Moment Theorems and a Breuer-Major argument.

Geometry and topology of spin random fields

Spin (spherical) random fields are very important in many physical applications, in particular they play a key role in Cosmology, especially in connection with the analysis of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. These objects can be viewed as random sections of the s-th complex tensor power of the tangent bundle of the 2-sphere. In this paper, we discuss how to characterize their expected geometry and topology. In particular, we investigate the asymptotic behaviour, under scaling assumptions, of general classes of geometric and topological functionals including Lipschitz-Killing Curvatures and Betti numbers for (properly defined) excursion sets; we cover both the cases of fixed and diverging spin parameters s. In the special case of monochromatic fields (i.e., spin random eigenfunctions) our results are particularly explicit; we show how their asymptotic behaviour is non-universal and we can obtain in particular complex versions of Berry's random waves and of Bargmann-Fock's models as subcases of a new generalized model, depending on the rate of divergence of the spin parameter s.

Non-Universal Fluctuations of the Empirical Measure for Isotropic Stationary Fields on $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$

In this paper, we consider isotropic and stationary real Gaussian random fields defined on $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and we investigate the asymptotic behavior, as $T\rightarrow +\infty$, of the empirical measure (excursion area) in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ at any threshold, covering both cases when the field exhibits short and long memory, i.e. integrable and non-integrable temporal covariance. It turns out that the limiting distribution is not universal, depending both on the memory parameters and the threshold. In particular, in the long memory case a form of Berry's cancellation phenomenon occurs at zero-level, inducing phase transitions for both variance rates and limiting laws.

Small Scale CLTs for the Nodal Length of Monochromatic Waves

We consider the nodal length $L(λ)$ of the restriction to a ball of radius $r_λ$ of a {\it Gaussian pullback monochromatic random wave} of parameter $λ>0$ associated with a Riemann surface $(\mathcal M,g)$ without conjugate points. Our main result is that, if $r_λ$ grows slower than $(\log λ)^{1/25}$, then (as $λ\to \infty$) the length $L(λ)$ verifies a Central Limit Theorem with the same scaling as Berry's random wave model -- as established in Nourdin, Peccati and Rossi (2019). Taking advantage of some powerful extensions of an estimate by Bérard (1986) due to Keeler (2019), our techniques are mainly based on a novel intrinsic bound on the coupling of smooth Gaussian fields, that is of independent interest, and moreover allow us to improve some estimates for the nodal length asymptotic variance of pullback random waves in Canzani and Hanin (2016). In order to demonstrate the flexibility of our approach, we also provide an application to phase transitions for the nodal length of arithmetic random waves on shrinking balls of the $2$-torus.

The Geometry of Spherical Random Fields

In this PhD Thesis we investigate the geometry of random fields on compact Riemannian manifolds, in particular the two-dimensional sphere. In the first part, we characterize isotropic Gaussian fields on homogeneous spaces of a compact group and then we prove the non-existence of P. Lévy's Brownian field on the group SO(3), which moreover allows to extend the same kind of result to SO(n), SU(n) for n bigger than 3. In the second part, we investigate the high-energy behavior of random eigenfunctions on the (hyper)sphere and on the torus proving quantitative CLT results for some geometric functionals of those eiegenfunctions. A nice non-Central and non-Universal result is shown for nodal length distribution in the case of arithmetic random waves. Finally, we extend representation formulas obtained in the first part to the case of spin random fields on the sphere, introducing a new approach i.e., the pullback random field, that easily allows to study random sections of homogeneous vector bundles.

On Sharp Large Deviations for the bridge of a general Diffusion

We provide sharp Large Deviation estimates for the probability of exit from a domain for the bridge of a $d$-dimensional general diffusion process $X$, as the conditioning time tends to $0$. This kind of results is motivated by applications to numerical simulation. In particular we investigate the influence of the drift $b$ of $X$. It turns out that the sharp asymptotics for the exit time probability are independent of the drift, provided $b$ enjoyes a simple condition that is always satisfied in dimension $1$. On the other hand, we show that the drift can be influential if this assumption is not satisfied. }

On the High Energy Behavior of Nonlinear Functionals of Random Eigenfunctions on $\mathbb S^d$

In this short survey we recollect some of the recent results on the high energy behavior (i.e., for diverging sequences of eigenvalues) of nonlinear functionals of Gaussian eigenfunctions on the $d$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb S^d$, $d\ge 2$. We present a quantitative Central Limit Theorem for a class of functionals whose Hermite rank is two, which includes in particular the empirical measure of excursion sets in the non-nodal case. Concerning the nodal case, we recall a CLT result for the defect on $\mathbb S^2$. The key tools are both, the asymptotic analysis of moments of all order for Gegenbauer polynomials, and so-called Fourth-Moment theorems.

Representation of Gaussian Isotropic Spin Random Fields

We develop a technique for the construction of random fields on algebraic structures. We deal with two general situations: random fields on homogeneous spaces of a compact group and in the spin-line bundles of the 2-sphere. In particular, every spin Gaussian isotropic field can be obtained with this construction. Our construction extends P. Lévy's original idea for the spherical Brownian Motion.

Stein-Malliavin Approximations for Nonlinear Functionals of Random Eigenfunctions on ${\mathbb{S}}^{d}$

We investigate Stein-Malliavin approximations for nonlinear functionals of geometric interest of Gaussian random eigenfunctions on the unit $d$ -dimensional sphere ${\mathbb{S}}^{d},$ $d\geq 2.$ All our results are established in the high energy limit, i.e. for eigenfunctions corresponding to growing eigenvalues. More precisely, we provide an asymptotic analysis for the variance of random eigenfunctions, and also establish rates of convergence for various probability metrics for Hermite subordinated processes, arbitrary polynomials of finite order and square integral nonlinear transforms; the latter, for instance, allows to prove a quantitative Central Limit Theorem for the excursion area. Some related issues were already considered in the literature for the $2$-dimensional case ${\mathbb{S}}^{2}$; our results are new or improve the existing bounds even for this special case. Proofs are based on the asymptotic analysis of moments of all order for Gegenbauer polynomials, and make extensive use of the recent literature on so-called fourth-moment theorems by Nourdin and Peccati.
